Not yet as a nationwide service. ISPreview reported on 14 October 2026 that Openreach is tentatively proposing a proof-of-concept (PoC) that could let customers install their own Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and connect its power supply in certain situations. Openreach’s current published process remains engineer-led for new fibre installations.
What the reported trial would change
The reported PoC concerns the ONT, the small unit that terminates an Openreach fibre line and presents an Ethernet connection for a broadband router. In selected cases, a customer could potentially fit the ONT and connect its power supply instead of waiting for an engineer to complete that part of the work.
That is a proposal, not proof that a public self-install product has launched. The 14 October 2026 ISPreview report describes Openreach as “tentatively proposing” the trial. It does not establish a nationwide policy, a launch date or participation by any named internet service provider.

What an ONT is—and what it is not
The fibre termination point
An ONT converts the optical signal arriving over the fibre into an electrical Ethernet connection. The normal signal path is:

It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.
- Openreach fibre enters the property.
- The fibre terminates at the ONT.
- An Ethernet cable runs from the ONT’s LAN or data port to the router’s WAN or internet port.
- The router supplies Wi‑Fi and wired networking throughout the home.
Openreach says the ONT is not a Wi‑Fi router and “it’s not a traditional modem.” Calling it a fibre modem is understandable shorthand, but it can cause confusion: the ONT does not distribute wireless internet, and replacing the router does not replace the ONT.
The equipment involved
The ONT, its power-supply unit (PSU) and the internal fibre cabling are Openreach equipment or fixed property infrastructure. Customers should not buy a replacement ONT, PSU or internal fibre kit for a normal installation. The customer-supplied accessory normally needed between the existing ONT and router is a standard Ethernet cable.

How a new Openreach FTTP installation works today
Engineer-led installation
Openreach’s standard installation guidance says an engineer runs fibre from a nearby connection point to the property, usually through a small drilled hole in an external wall. The engineer installs the ONT inside the premises and tests the line. Openreach says most installations take between one and four hours, with the exact time depending on the property and the route the fibre must take.
This remains the process to expect unless your broadband provider gives you specific instructions that an approved alternative applies to your order.

The limited self-setup that is already available
Openreach already describes a narrower form of self-install, but it assumes the ONT is present and connected. It does not let a customer install the outside fibre, terminate a new fibre line or choose an arbitrary ONT.
- Locate the small white ONT installed at the property.
- Check that its power light is on and that the PSU is connected.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the ONT’s LAN/data port to the WAN/internet port on the router supplied by your broadband provider.
- Power up the router and use the provider’s activation or setup instructions.
- Use the ONT and router light guidance to identify a connection or fibre fault. If the ONT is missing, has no power or shows fault indications, contact the provider; Openreach says an engineer may need to visit.

- trial start or end dates;
- participating internet service providers;
- which property types or customers would qualify;
- approved ONT or PSU models;
- installation, electrical-safety or fibre-handling instructions;
- who would be responsible for a failed self-install;
- how replacement equipment, damage or no-light faults would be handled.
Until Openreach or a participating provider publishes those details, “self-install” should be read as a possible limited PoC rather than a service you can request on any FTTP order.

If you are ordering a new FTTP connection
- Ask your broadband provider whether your order includes an engineer appointment. Do not cancel it because of the reported PoC.
- Confirm where the ONT can be installed and that there is a suitable mains socket and route for the router’s Ethernet connection.
- Expect the engineer to install and test the fibre and ONT unless the provider gives written, product-specific instructions saying otherwise.
If an ONT is already installed
- Leave the ONT, PSU and internal fibre in their existing positions.
- Use an Ethernet cable between the ONT’s data port and the router’s WAN port.
- Follow the provider’s activation steps and check the indicator lights.
- Report missing power, fault lights or an absent ONT to the provider rather than opening the unit or replacing it.
If you move home or change provider
Openreach says the ONT and associated cabling should stay with the property. Do not remove the box, take the PSU with you or alter the fibre when changing provider or moving out. The next occupant or provider may need the same installed equipment.

How the wider rollout fits in
Openreach’s 2026 availability page says its full-fibre network reaches 19 million homes and gives a target of 25 million homes by December 2026. Those figures describe network rollout, not the status of the self-install PoC. A larger footprint may make a limited installation experiment useful, but it does not itself confirm that customers can install ONTs.
Bottom line for prospective customers
Openreach is reportedly considering a controlled self-install experiment for the ONT and its power connection, but there is no published evidence yet of a generally available customer-install option. For now, treat a new FTTP installation as engineer-led, use only the existing ONT and PSU, connect your router with standard Ethernet, and wait for your provider to identify any trial-specific eligibility and instructions.
