Choose self-install only when your broadband provider has confirmed that your address, existing Openreach equipment and order are eligible. You normally connect the supplied router to an existing Optical Network Terminal (ONT), follow activation instructions and avoid an appointment. Choose an engineer when fibre must be brought to the property, an ONT or internal fibre lead is missing or faulty, drilling or cable routing is required, or telecare and alarm services need a managed change.

Openreach says most engineer installations take one to four hours, depending on the property and fibre route. There is no single Openreach consumer price: the retail provider sets any setup or visit fee. Examples in published provider information include an EE £50 setup fee on specified plans (September 2025), a £50 EE engineer charge where a working Openreach ONT is not present, and an optional £30 engineer-install charge advertised by BT. Those figures are provider- and order-specific, not a market-wide tariff.

Self-install and engineer installation at a glance

Both routes deliver the same FTTP (fibre-to-the-premises) service. The difference is who completes the physical connection and initial checks. An engineer can route the external fibre, drill the wall entry, fit the ONT and test the optical link. A self-install customer works with equipment that Openreach has already installed and completes the indoor connection and activation.

Decision point Self-install Engineer installation
When it is offered Only after the provider’s address and line checks mark the order eligible Required or selected when property work, equipment work or a managed migration is needed
Customer cost Provider’s stated setup charge, which may be zero or a plan-specific fee Provider’s stated installation or visit charge; no universal Openreach retail price
Appointment Usually none; you activate the service when equipment arrives Appointment required, with an adult aged 18 or over present
Physical work No outside fibre construction, drilling or ONT relocation by the customer Fibre routing, wall entry, ONT fitting and testing are handled during the visit
Typical time to use the service Can be quicker if the ONT and fibre lead are already working Includes scheduling time plus a visit; the visit itself is usually one to four hours
Best fit A working ONT and internal fibre connection are present, and you are comfortable with Ethernet and router setup First-time FTTP, missing or faulty equipment, new cable routes, uncertain equipment placement, telecare or alarm dependencies

“Self-install” does not mean that you are authorised to alter the outside fibre network or remove fixed Openreach equipment. It is a provider-managed setup option for an address that has already passed the relevant checks.

What Openreach self-install actually involves

Eligibility is decided on the order

Your provider checks the address, the service record and the equipment associated with the line. An order may initially appear to qualify and later be changed to an engineer visit. EE warns that further checks can identify property work, a problem with existing Openreach equipment or a telecare requirement. Treat the provider’s final order confirmation—not an early sales-screen message—as the authoritative decision.

The equipment you use

The ONT is the small powered unit that converts the incoming optical signal into an Ethernet connection. Openreach describes it as the device that converts the fibre signal; your router plugs into it and distributes the internet around the home. In a self-install journey, Openreach’s technical guidance says it supplies the ONT, battery backup and connectorised internal fibre cable where those items are needed. The ONT remains Openreach property.

The normal customer task is to connect the router’s Internet or WAN port to the ONT’s Ethernet port, power both devices, wait for the indicated lights and complete the provider’s activation steps. You should not unplug the optical fibre, open the ONT or move fixed fibre fittings.

Why a self-install can become an engineer order

A provider can switch the route after a records check, a remote line test or information supplied about the property. Common triggers are an ONT that does not respond, an absent or damaged fibre lead, a need to run cable to a different room, construction required outside the home, or phone-dependent services that need coordinated migration. If this happens, ask the provider whether the revised visit fee replaces or is added to the original setup fee and whether the activation date changes.

What happens during an engineer installation

External route and wall entry

For a standard installation, Openreach describes the engineer’s work as running fibre from the nearest underground duct or overhead pole to the property, bringing it through a small hole in an external wall, and securing the route. The precise path depends on the property, existing ducts, pole position and safe working requirements.

ONT fitting and service test

The engineer installs the ONT at an agreed indoor location, connects the incoming fibre and tests the optical service. Your broadband provider may then complete router configuration or activation. The engineer is expected to leave the work safe and tidy. If the router must be positioned away from the ONT, ask who will provide and install the longer Ethernet run; the standard visit does not automatically include every internal network cable you may want.

What you must provide

  • An adult aged 18 or over must be present to provide access and agree where equipment is placed.
  • Clear access to the proposed wall entry, the internal equipment location and any relevant cupboards or communal areas is essential.
  • Tell the provider in advance about alarms, telecare, monitored medical devices, lift lines or other services that currently use the telephone connection.
  • Decide where the ONT and router should go before the appointment, taking power sockets, ventilation and the route to your main devices into account.

Openreach quotes “one to four hours” for most installations, with the property type and fibre route affecting the duration. A straightforward house may be nearer the short end; difficult access, a longer route or coordination with building management can extend the visit.

How much does each option cost?

Openreach operates the access network, but the price displayed to a consumer is set by the broadband retailer and depends on the plan and order circumstances. Ask for the exact charge, when it is payable and what happens if the order changes from self-install to an engineer visit.

Published example What it covers Qualification
EE: £50 FTTP broadband setup fee Setup on specified plans Listed in EE’s September 2025 price guide; plan and order conditions apply
EE: £50 Full Fibre engineer-visit charge Visit where a working Openreach ONT is not already present Provider-specific charge; not an Openreach-wide tariff
BT: optional £30 engineer-install charge Engineer installation option shown in BT broadband listing Offer, plan and date conditions apply

These examples should not be used as a quotation for another provider or a future order. A provider can bundle installation into a plan, waive it as a promotion, charge for a non-standard visit or apply a different amount after a survey.

Apartment and shared-building work

Openreach says connecting fibre to an apartment building is usually free to the building once the required permissions are in place, although specialist or non-standard charges can arise. That statement concerns the building connection; it does not guarantee that your broadband provider will show no consumer setup fee. Confirm both the building’s permission status and your individual order price.

Self-install: a safe step-by-step process

  1. Verify the final order status. Check that the provider explicitly says self-install is confirmed, not merely that the address is “available.” Confirm the activation date and any setup charge.
  2. Locate the ONT. Find the Openreach ONT and its power supply. Check that it is securely mounted, dry, ventilated and has no visible damage. Do not remove it from the wall.
  3. Check the fibre lead. Make sure the connectorised internal fibre cable is seated as instructed and is not sharply bent, crushed or pulled. Do not disconnect the optical connector to inspect it.
  4. Prepare the Ethernet connection. Use the cable supplied by the provider, or a suitable Cat6 Ethernet cable if a longer or replacement lead is required. Connect one end to the ONT’s Ethernet port and the other to the router’s labelled Internet or WAN port.
  5. Power the devices in the instructed order. Turn on the ONT and router. Allow the startup period specified by the provider; optical and Ethernet lights can take several minutes to settle.
  6. Complete activation. Use the provider’s app, web activation page or supplied instructions. Enter only the credentials supplied for your order; do not alter optical settings.
  7. Test with a wired device. Connect a computer by Ethernet to distinguish a broadband connection problem from Wi-Fi coverage. Check that the router reports an internet connection and that a normal website loads.
  8. Record the result. Note the ONT and router light states, activation time and any error message. This information makes a support call faster if the service does not come up.

Engineer installation: how to prepare and what to check

  1. Confirm the appointment window and access requirements. Ensure an adult will be home and arrange access to external walls, driveways, communal risers, lofts or service cupboards where relevant.
  2. Choose the equipment location. The ONT needs a nearby power socket and a practical route to the router. Avoid enclosed spaces with heat, damp or no ventilation. The final position must also be acceptable for the fibre route.
  3. Discuss the route before drilling. Ask the engineer to explain the entry point, cable path and any visible external hardware. Raise concerns about protected surfaces, rented-property permissions or conservation requirements before work starts.
  4. Identify dependent services. Tell the engineer and provider about telecare pendants, monitored alarms, fax machines, lift emergency phones and any analogue phone service. Do not assume that plugging a telephone into the new router preserves every service automatically.
  5. Observe the installation check. The engineer should fit the ONT, connect the fibre, test the optical signal and leave the work safe and tidy. Ask which ONT port the router should use and whether the provider or engineer completes activation.
  6. Test before the appointment ends. Check the router’s WAN status, make a wired connection if possible and test a normal website. Photograph equipment labels and keep the appointment paperwork without exposing account passwords.

When an engineer is the safer choice

First-time FTTP or no working ONT

If the property has never had Openreach FTTP, or the provider cannot confirm a working ONT and fibre lead, an engineer is normally required. The visit establishes the physical optical path that a self-install customer cannot create.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

New route, drilling or internal cabling

Choose the managed visit when the fibre must cross a wall, follow a new route, pass through a communal area or reach a different internal position. Customers should not drill for an external fibre or attempt to splice or extend the optical cable.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.

Faulty equipment or uncertain lights

An ONT with no power, persistent optical alarm or physical damage needs provider support. Do not substitute another ONT or buy an unapproved optical module. The ONT is Openreach property, and replacement or repair must be coordinated through the provider.

Telecare and alarm migration

Telecare and alarm systems can depend on the old telephone network and may need a planned changeover, battery provision or an alternative connection. An engineer appointment gives the provider an opportunity to coordinate the migration instead of leaving a critical service disconnected after a self-install.

When you cannot assess the location

If you are unsure where the ONT should sit, cannot identify a safe cable route or are uncomfortable checking Ethernet links, paying for a managed installation can reduce avoidable setup errors even when self-install is technically available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When self-install is a reasonable choice

  • The provider explicitly confirms self-install after its checks.
  • A working Openreach ONT is already mounted and has a suitable power supply.
  • The internal fibre connection is present and undamaged.
  • No outside construction, wall drilling or new internal fibre route is required.
  • You can connect a router by Ethernet, follow activation instructions and perform a basic wired test.
  • No telecare, alarm or other phone-dependent service needs a coordinated migration.

Self-install is most attractive when these conditions are all true. The appointment is avoided, the service can be activated as soon as the equipment and order allow, and you retain control over the router setup. It is not a way to bypass an address check or a physical installation requirement.

Reliability: what can and cannot be claimed

There is no authoritative controlled failure-rate comparison showing that self-install is a fixed percentage less reliable than an engineer visit. Reliability depends on the condition of the existing ONT and fibre lead, the provider’s activation process, the quality of the Ethernet connection and the complexity of the property. A self-install can be dependable when the physical link is already tested; an engineer visit adds professional installation and an on-site service test when the property is uncertain.

Potential failure point More likely concern Control that reduces risk
No optical signal Existing or newly installed fibre path Have the provider test the line; use an engineer when the ONT or fibre route is unconfirmed
Router connected to the wrong port Self-install setup Use the labelled ONT Ethernet and router WAN/Internet ports; test with a wired device
Damaged or sharply bent fibre Customer handling or poor routing Leave the optical connector alone and request provider support
Wi-Fi appears slow despite a live line Either route after activation Check a wired connection before diagnosing wireless coverage
Alarm or telecare stops working Unmanaged migration Declare the service before the order and arrange a coordinated changeover

An engineer’s test confirms the physical service at the appointment, but it does not guarantee Wi-Fi performance in every room or prevent later router, power or in-home network faults. Self-install avoids physical-work errors only when the equipment already meets the eligibility assumptions.

Equipment, cabling and home layout

ONT and router roles

The ONT terminates the Openreach fibre. The router supplies the home network, Wi-Fi, firewall and usually the provider’s voice service. They are separate devices, so replacing or relocating the router does not mean relocating the ONT. Keep the ONT powered and accessible for diagnostics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ethernet length and Cat6

A short Ethernet cable is often supplied. If the router must sit farther away, Cat6 is a practical choice for the indoor run, provided the cable is routed safely and does not put strain on the ONT. Ask the provider who is responsible for any longer run in a new-build or developer-installed property; internal wiring beyond the ONT may not be part of the Openreach installation.

Switching providers

Leave the ONT and fixed fibre fittings in place when changing broadband provider. The next provider normally uses the existing optical termination. Removing or moving it can create a fault, delay activation and leave you responsible for restoring an installation that remains Openreach property.

Special property situations

New builds

A new-build may have an ONT position but incomplete internal network wiring. Confirm whether the developer, Openreach or the broadband provider supplies the cable from the ONT to the preferred router location. Do not assume that a visible wall plate means the service is ready for self-install.

Rented homes and protected buildings

Obtain any landlord, freeholder or building-manager permission required for external fixings, wall entry or communal routes before the appointment. Tell the provider about restrictions so the engineer can assess an alternative route rather than arriving without permission to work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Flats and apartment blocks

Building-level fibre deployment may require wayleave or landlord approval. Even when the building connection is complete, an individual flat can need an engineer to connect the final route, install an ONT or address a non-standard riser. Building-level installation terms do not determine your retail setup fee.

Troubleshooting after self-install

No lights or no power

Check the ONT and router power switches, adapters and sockets without unplugging the optical connector. If the ONT remains unpowered, contact the provider with the model and light status. Do not use a random replacement power supply.

ONT is powered but the router reports no internet

Check that the Ethernet cable is firmly seated in the ONT Ethernet port and router WAN/Internet port. Try the supplied cable, reboot in the order shown by the provider and complete any activation page. A wired test prevents Wi-Fi configuration from masking a line problem.

Persistent optical warning or an activation failure

Stop changing cables at the optical side and report the warning. The provider may arrange an engineer to inspect the fibre, ONT or account provisioning. Tell support whether the service was ever live and provide the recorded light pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wi-Fi works poorly but wired access is normal

The FTTP line is probably active; investigate router placement, channel congestion, walls and the in-home network separately. A provider or Openreach engineer visit for the access line does not automatically redesign Wi-Fi coverage.

Practical verdict

Use self-install when the provider has confirmed eligibility, a working ONT and fibre lead are already in place, and the remaining task is a straightforward router-and-activation setup. Select an engineer when any physical connection, equipment fault, uncertain route or critical telephone-dependent service is involved. Compare the exact retail charge and appointment terms on your order: the examples of £50 from EE and £30 from BT show why the provider’s current checkout information matters more than a generic “Openreach price.”
