Most OpenCode Go failures come from one of seven layers: the credential is missing or invalid, OpenCode’s provider state is damaged, the model identifier is wrong or unavailable, a model is being sent to an incompatible API endpoint, cached provider packages are stale, the network blocks the provider, or the account has reached a usage limit. Start with /connect, select OpenCode Go, paste a current Go key, and run /models. If that does not resolve the error, use the failing layer to choose the repair below rather than repeatedly rotating keys.
OpenCode stores credentials entered through the TUI in ~/.local/share/opencode/auth.json. The CLI can authenticate with opencode auth login, and opencode auth list shows whether a provider credential is present. Model names must use the providerId/modelId form, such as opencode-go/kimi-k3.
Use this recovery order first
- Confirm that you have an active OpenCode Go subscription and a newly copied API key from the OpenCode Console.
- In the OpenCode terminal user interface (TUI), run
/connect, choose OpenCode Go, and paste the key. - Run
opencode auth listoutside the TUI, or reconnect with/connect, to verify that the credential is attached to the Go provider. - Run
/modelsand select a model that the authenticated account currently lists. - If the error is
ProviderInitError, validate the provider configuration and then reset OpenCode’s local data directory if necessary. - If the error is
AI_APICallError, clear the OpenCode package cache so provider packages are downloaded again. - Check Console usage before changing credentials when authentication and model selection both succeed.
This order separates identity, configuration, catalog, package, network, and quota problems. Each layer has a different fix.

| What you see | Likely layer | First check | Typical repair |
|---|---|---|---|
authentication failed, no provider credential |
Credential presence or validity | opencode auth list |
Reconnect with /connect or opencode auth login and paste a valid Go key. |
ProviderInitError |
Provider configuration or corrupted local state | Compare the provider entry with the providers guide | Reset ~/.local/share/opencode (or the Windows equivalent), restart, and authenticate again. |
| Model not found or unavailable | Model ID or current catalog | Run /models and copy the listed identifier |
Use opencode-go/model-id; check whether the provider or model is disabled. |
AI_APICallError after a package or app update |
Stale provider package cache | Review the error and recent package changes | Remove ~/.cache/opencode, restart OpenCode, and allow packages to reinstall. |
| Requests fail only on a custom integration | Endpoint or SDK mismatch | Check the model’s documented protocol | Use the endpoint and AI SDK package mapped to that model. |
| Authentication works but requests stop after sustained use | Plan allowance or account usage | Inspect usage in the Console | Wait for the allowance to renew, change usage, or select an eligible model; do not rotate a working key blindly. |
| Timeouts, connection refused, or provider unreachable | Network access | Check whether the network permits the provider API | Remove the network block or retry from an allowed connection. |
Connect OpenCode Go correctly
Before you start
- OpenCode Go is an optional provider; it is not enabled merely by installing OpenCode.
- Subscribe to Go in the OpenCode Console and copy the API key shown for that account.
- Use the account and workspace that should own the usage. A key from another account can authenticate successfully but expose a different model catalog or limits.
- Make sure the machine running OpenCode can reach the provider API. A valid key cannot overcome a firewall, proxy, DNS, or other network block.
Authenticate in the TUI
- Open OpenCode’s TUI.
- Enter
/connect. - Select OpenCode Go from the provider list. Selecting a similarly named or unrelated provider attaches the key to the wrong provider.
- Paste the Go API key and complete the prompt.
- Run
/models. The list is the authoritative set of models that this authenticated account can currently select.
The TUI flow writes the credential to ~/.local/share/opencode/auth.json. Treat that file as secret material: do not paste its contents into an issue, terminal transcript, or chat message.

Authenticate from the CLI
Run opencode auth login when you prefer a command-line flow. The command accepts --provider and --method flags, so you can select the provider or login method directly. For Go, begin with:
opencode auth login --provider opencode-go
Complete the prompts, then verify the saved credential with:
opencode auth list
If the list does not show an OpenCode Go credential, the login did not complete for that provider. Run the command again with the intended provider or return to /connect.
Select a model with the complete identifier
OpenCode expects a model in providerId/modelId form. For Go, the provider prefix is opencode-go; an example is opencode-go/kimi-k3. Copy the exact spelling and punctuation shown by /models rather than entering a shortened name. Keeping the prefix matters when more than one provider exposes similarly named models.

Fix authentication failures
Credential missing, stale, or attached to the wrong provider
Run opencode auth list. If OpenCode Go is absent, the key was not saved, was removed, or was entered under another provider. Re-authenticate with /connect, select OpenCode Go, and paste the current key. The official troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends re-authenticating with /connect for authentication failures.
If a credential is listed but requests still report authentication failure, copy the key again from the Console and reconnect. A revoked, expired, mistyped, or account-mismatched key can remain present in the local file while no longer being accepted by the service. Do not edit the key by hand in auth.json; replace it through the supported login flow.
Network access is blocking a valid key
Authentication requires a connection to the provider API. Test from the same machine and network where OpenCode runs. Corporate firewalls, restrictive DNS, proxy rules, or an offline environment can make a valid key appear invalid because the request never reaches the provider. If the same key works from an allowed network but not the original one, fix the network path rather than generating another key.

Do not confuse authentication with authorization or quota
A successful login proves that OpenCode can associate a credential with the provider; it does not guarantee that every model is enabled or that the account has remaining allowance. Once opencode auth list and /models work, investigate model availability and Console usage instead of repeatedly reconnecting.

Fix model-not-found and unavailable-model errors
Use the current catalog
Run /models after authenticating. The command reflects what the account can select at that moment. If a model is not listed, do not assume that its old identifier still works. A catalog can change, a model can be disabled, or the provider can be inactive even while the API key remains valid.
Check the provider prefix
Every Go model must be addressed as opencode-go/model-id. A bare model name or a prefix belonging to another provider produces a not-found or unavailable response. Copy the complete value from the model picker into your configuration or command.
Check account and provider state
- The Go subscription may not be active for the account whose key is saved.
- The provider may be temporarily inactive.
- The model may be disabled or removed from the current catalog.
- The account may not be eligible for that model or may have reached a plan allowance.
These cases are not repaired by clearing credentials. Confirm the account and plan in the OpenCode Console, refresh the model list, and choose one that is currently offered.

Understand endpoint and SDK compatibility
Not every Go model uses the same API protocol. The current Go model table maps individual models to one of three endpoint families: OpenAI Responses, OpenAI-compatible /chat/completions, or Anthropic /messages. It also identifies the matching AI SDK package. A custom integration that sends a model to the wrong endpoint or loads the wrong SDK package can raise a provider or API error even when the Go key is valid.

When this matters
- OpenCode’s built-in provider path normally selects the mapping for you.
- Custom provider definitions, wrappers, scripts, and direct SDK calls must preserve the model’s documented protocol.
- Changing only the model string while leaving an endpoint hard-coded can create a false impression that the model or key is broken.
How to correct a custom integration
- Take the exact model ID from
/models. - Look up that model’s protocol in the current Go model table.
- Configure the corresponding endpoint family: Responses,
/chat/completions, or/messages. - Use the AI SDK package listed for that model rather than assuming all Go models share one client.
- Retry with a minimal request before adding tools, streaming, or other optional features.
If the built-in OpenCode client works with the same model and your custom client fails, the endpoint or SDK mapping is the first place to look.
Fix ProviderInitError
ProviderInitError points to provider configuration or damaged local application state, not automatically to an invalid API key. Follow the documented reset sequence.
- Compare the provider configuration with OpenCode’s providers guide. Check the provider ID, model references, and any custom fields for spelling or syntax errors.
- Close OpenCode and preserve any configuration you may need to recreate.
- On macOS or Linux, remove
~/.local/share/opencode. On Windows, remove%USERPROFILE%.localshareopencode. - Restart OpenCode.
- Run
/connect, choose OpenCode Go, and authenticate again. - Run
/modelsand retry with a currently listed model.
Removing the data directory also removes locally stored authentication and application data. You should expect to sign in again and recreate any local settings that were stored there. Use this reset only after checking the provider configuration, because it is broader than reconnecting.
Fix AI_APICallError caused by stale provider packages
OpenCode dynamically installs provider packages and caches them locally. The troubleshooting guidance notes that outdated packages can cause API-call errors. If authentication and model selection are correct but calls fail with AI_APICallError, refresh the cache.

- Exit OpenCode.
- On macOS or Linux, remove
~/.cache/opencode. On Windows, remove%USERPROFILE%.cacheopencode. - Start OpenCode again.
- Wait for the current provider packages to download.
- Reconnect only if OpenCode asks for credentials, then retry the same model.
Clearing the cache targets downloaded provider packages; it is different from deleting ~/.local/share/opencode, which removes authentication and application data. If the error persists after a clean package download, continue with endpoint compatibility, network access, and usage checks rather than deleting the data directory repeatedly.
Check Go plan limits before rotating keys
The current OpenCode Go documentation lists Go at $10 per month and Go Plus at $40 per month. It defines each model’s allowance as 20% of the monthly limit for a five-hour window, 50% for a weekly window, and 100% for the monthly window. These figures are published for 2026 and may change as OpenCode adjusts plans and model limits.
| Window | Published allowance | What it means operationally |
|---|---|---|
| Five hours | 20% of the monthly limit | A burst of usage can exhaust the short window even when the monthly allowance remains. |
| One week | 50% of the monthly limit | Heavy weekly use can block requests before the month ends. |
| One month | 100% of the monthly limit | The account’s full plan allowance for the billing period. |
When login succeeds, /models lists a model, and requests fail only after sustained use, inspect usage in the OpenCode Console. Limits and model tables are time-sensitive and may change as OpenCode learns from early usage and feedback. A quota response is not fixed by generating another API key for the same account.
Use logs to distinguish a local failure from a provider failure
OpenCode stores logs in ~/.local/share/opencode/log/ on macOS and Linux. On Windows, look under %USERPROFILE%.localshareopencodelog. OpenCode keeps the most recent 10 timestamped log files.
Increase diagnostic detail
- Start OpenCode with
--log-level DEBUGfor more detailed logging. - Use
--print-logsto surface startup output in the terminal.
Capture the timestamp that matches the failed request. Remove or redact API keys, authorization headers, and prompt content that should not be shared. The useful diagnostic portion normally includes the provider name, model ID, error class, HTTP status if present, and the relevant DEBUG lines.
When to reset, reconnect, or wait
| Action | Use it when | Do not use it as a substitute for |
|---|---|---|
Reconnect with /connect |
The key is missing, stale, invalid, or attached to the wrong provider. | Fixing a blocked network or an exhausted allowance. |
Run /models |
You need the account’s current model IDs or a model disappeared. | Repairing corrupted provider state. |
Delete ~/.local/share/opencode |
ProviderInitError remains after configuration is checked. |
Refreshing stale provider packages; that uses the cache directory instead. |
Delete ~/.cache/opencode |
AI_APICallError indicates stale or outdated provider packages. |
Correcting a wrong model ID or endpoint mapping. |
| Inspect Console usage | Authentication and model selection work but requests hit a limit. | Replacing a valid key without evidence of credential failure. |
| Check network access | Requests time out, are refused, or cannot reach the provider. | Changing model identifiers that are already listed by /models. |
Prepare an effective escalation
If the sequence above does not identify the cause, preserve the exact error text and gather:
- the OpenCode version;
- the provider name, written exactly as OpenCode reports it;
- the complete model ID, including the
opencode-go/prefix; - the time and date of the failure;
- relevant DEBUG log lines from the matching timestamped file;
- whether
opencode auth listshows the credential; - whether
/modelslists the model; and - whether the Console shows an active plan or exhausted allowance.
Search existing GitHub issues before opening a new report, as the official troubleshooting guidance recommends. Never include the API key or the complete contents of auth.json in an issue. A report that identifies the provider, model, version, error class, and sanitized DEBUG output lets maintainers distinguish a catalog change from a local configuration, package, network, or quota problem.
