Run OpenClaw if you want a flexible, self-hosted assistant that you can install across major operating systems, connect to many messaging channels, and pair with local or hosted models. Run NemoClaw when security governance is the deciding requirement: it packages OpenClaw (or another supported agent) inside NVIDIA OpenShell sandboxes with enforced network, filesystem, process, authentication, and inference controls. NemoClaw governs the agent runtime; it does not replace it.

OpenClaw and NemoClaw in one sentence

OpenClaw is the assistant and runtime. NemoClaw is a governed deployment stack that installs and operates a supported agent, with OpenClaw selected by default, inside NVIDIA OpenShell. That distinction determines nearly every practical difference: OpenClaw gives you direct control and broad flexibility, while NemoClaw adds a policy and lifecycle layer intended for safer, repeatable operation.

Question OpenClaw NemoClaw
What is it? An open-source AI assistant with a local Gateway, channel connectors, tools, memory and provider configuration. An open-source reference stack for running supported agent runtimes in NVIDIA OpenShell sandboxes.
Default deployment Runs on your computer; host tools are available to the main session unless you configure sandboxing. Runs the selected agent inside a policy-enforced OpenShell sandbox while the operator retains host control.
Primary strength Control, portability and extensibility. Isolation, policy enforcement and repeatable operations.
Models Hosted or local providers can be selected and changed by the operator. Uses managed inference routes and approved integrations defined by its OpenShell blueprint.
Installation Shell installers, Windows PowerShell, or npm, followed by OpenClaw onboarding. NVIDIA installer followed by the nemoclaw onboard wizard.
Price information The project states that it has no paid tier or hosted service; model and infrastructure charges depend on what you connect. No price or independent cost comparison is established in the published material.

What OpenClaw actually runs

The local Gateway is the center of the system

OpenClaw uses a local Gateway as the control point for its command-line interface, dashboard, terminal user interface and channel connections. The Gateway coordinates the assistant’s state, memory, credentials, tools and model-provider requests on the machine where you install it. You can then expose the assistant through channels such as Discord, iMessage, Slack, Teams, Telegram and WhatsApp, subject to each channel’s configuration and permissions.

State and credentials remain on your hardware under the project’s self-hosted operating model. You choose whether model requests go to a hosted provider or a model running locally. This makes OpenClaw useful when you need to change providers, keep an installation on a workstation or server, or build custom tools and extensions without adopting a managed hosted service.

Host access is powerful, not automatically safe

In a basic installation, tools for the main session run on the host. That means an assistant with access to files, shells, browsers or other integrations can have meaningful authority over the computer. OpenClaw documents pairing unknown senders and configuring exposure carefully before allowing remote access. Sandboxing is available as a deployment choice, but the operator must enable and manage it.

The security boundary therefore depends on your choices: which channels can reach the Gateway, which senders are paired, what tools are enabled, where credentials are stored, and whether tool execution is isolated. OpenClaw’s flexibility is an advantage for an experienced operator, but it is also the reason an always-on or remotely reachable installation needs a deliberate threat model.

What NemoClaw adds around the agent

It is a stack, not a replacement assistant

NVIDIA describes NemoClaw as an open-source reference stack for running supported and qualified agent runtimes more safely inside OpenShell. Its package combines guided onboarding, a versioned blueprint, managed inference, network policy, managed integrations and lifecycle operations. OpenClaw is the default agent selected by the onboarding flow, but the CLI can list and select other supported agents.

The practical model is: NemoClaw prepares and governs the environment; OpenShell enforces the sandbox boundary; the selected agent performs the work. NemoClaw therefore does not replace OpenClaw, and it does not turn OpenClaw into a different conversational product. It changes how the runtime is installed, connected and constrained.

Host, gateway and sandbox responsibilities are separated

NemoClaw’s architecture separates the host CLI, the OpenShell gateway, the sandbox, the agent integration layer, inference providers, approved integrations and managed state. The operator keeps control on the host, while OpenShell applies the policies that govern what the sandbox can do.

OpenShell stores inference-provider credentials and managed MCP bearer values outside the sandbox. It injects those values only at approved request boundaries, reducing the need to place long-lived secrets inside the agent’s filesystem. This is a different operational pattern from simply running an assistant on a host and asking the assistant itself to protect its credentials.

Security: which one is safer?

For a default, remotely reachable installation, NemoClaw provides the stronger and more explicit security boundary. NVIDIA documents deny-by-default controls across five layers: network, filesystem, process, gateway authentication and inference. OpenShell is described as enforcing network-namespace isolation, seccomp filters, SSRF protection, TLS termination and gateway authentication.

Security concern OpenClaw baseline NemoClaw approach
Network access Configured by the operator; exposure and outbound access depend on deployment settings. OpenShell policy provides deny-by-default network controls, namespace isolation and SSRF protection.
Filesystem access Host tools can reach whatever the operator permits; sandboxing is optional configuration. Sandbox policy limits filesystem visibility and access.
Processes and system calls Host execution remains the operator’s responsibility. OpenShell applies process controls and seccomp filters.
Gateway authentication Requires careful pairing and exposure configuration. Gateway authentication and TLS termination are part of the governed stack.
Provider credentials Stored and managed according to the OpenClaw deployment. Provider credentials and managed MCP bearer values stay outside the sandbox and are injected at approved boundaries.

“Safer” does not mean risk-free. NemoClaw adds policy machinery, readiness checks, gateways and lifecycle components that must themselves be configured and maintained. A badly administered governed stack can still be unavailable or misconfigured. Its advantage is that security decisions are represented as enforceable policy instead of being left entirely to the assistant operator.

Installation and first-run workflows

Installing OpenClaw

OpenClaw provides shell installers for macOS and Linux, a WSL2 path, Windows PowerShell installation and npm installation. The exact command can change with the project’s current release, so use the installer command shown in the current OpenClaw documentation rather than copying an old command from a forum post.

  1. Install the runtime. Choose the installer that matches macOS, Linux, WSL2, Windows PowerShell or npm.
  2. Complete onboarding. Set the local Gateway, initial identity and model-provider configuration.
  3. Check the Gateway. Run openclaw gateway status and confirm that the local service is running.
  4. Open the dashboard. Run openclaw dashboard to inspect status and configuration through the web interface.
  5. Pair channels deliberately. Add only the messaging channels and senders you need. Unknown-sender pairing is an important protection before remote exposure.
  6. Limit tools. Review shell, file, browser, network and integration permissions before allowing unattended work.
  7. Choose isolation. If the assistant must handle untrusted prompts or remain reachable continuously, configure OpenClaw’s available sandboxing and host-firewall controls instead of assuming the base install is isolated.

After the Gateway is working, channels, tools, skills, plugins and model providers extend the assistant. Treat each extension as a new trust boundary: verify what credentials it receives, what network destinations it can reach and whether it runs in the host session or an isolated environment.

Installing NemoClaw

NemoClaw is installed with NVIDIA’s installer and operated through the nemoclaw CLI. Its onboarding flow is more involved because it creates the governed environment rather than only starting an assistant.

  1. Install NemoClaw. Use NVIDIA’s current installer for the supported host environment.
  2. Start the wizard. Run nemoclaw onboard.
  3. Create or connect OpenShell. The wizard creates a new OpenShell gateway or connects to one that already exists.
  4. Register inference providers. Supply the provider configuration that the managed inference layer will use. Credentials are handled outside the sandbox and made available at approved request boundaries.
  5. Select the image. Choose a managed image or specify a custom Dockerfile, depending on the software and integrations your agent requires.
  6. Select the agent. OpenClaw is the default selection; use the CLI’s supported-agent list when you need another qualified runtime.
  7. Create the sandbox. The wizard provisions the sandbox and applies the versioned blueprint and policy configuration.
  8. Run readiness checks. Confirm that the gateway, inference route, image, integrations and sandbox lifecycle are healthy before connecting users or unattended jobs.

The additional steps are the point: NemoClaw makes deployment repeatable and policy-aware, but it is not as lightweight as installing one local Gateway.

Model and infrastructure flexibility

When OpenClaw is the better fit

  • You need to switch freely between local and hosted model providers.
  • You want the assistant to run on a personal computer, a conventional server or a WSL2 environment.
  • You are building custom skills, plugins or channel integrations and want direct access to the runtime configuration.
  • You accept responsibility for host hardening, credential storage, sender pairing and network exposure.

When NemoClaw’s constraints help

  • You need a repeatable image and policy blueprint across multiple deployments.
  • Security teams require explicit controls for network, filesystem, process, authentication and inference access.
  • You want provider credentials and managed MCP values kept outside the agent sandbox.
  • You prefer a lifecycle CLI and readiness checks over individually maintaining every host-level control.

NemoClaw’s supported blueprint shapes your choices. Managed inference routes and approved integrations can reduce configuration drift, but they also mean that an arbitrary OpenClaw extension may need adaptation before it fits the sandbox policy. OpenClaw exposes more of the underlying environment; NemoClaw trades some of that freedom for governance.

Operational overhead and maintenance

An OpenClaw deployment normally has one primary operational object: the local Gateway. You update the runtime, inspect Gateway status, rotate provider credentials, manage channel pairings and maintain any host sandboxing you enabled. This is straightforward for a single operator who understands the machine and its network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NemoClaw introduces more objects to monitor: the host CLI, OpenShell gateway, versioned blueprint, sandbox image, agent integration, inference provider registration, approved integrations, readiness state and lifecycle operations. That structure is valuable when several people or environments must be kept consistent. It also creates more failure points. A model route can be healthy while the sandbox image is not, or the sandbox can be ready while a network policy blocks an integration the agent expects.

Plan ownership before deployment. Decide who updates the blueprint, approves new integrations, rotates credentials, reviews policy changes and responds when a readiness check fails. Governance works best when those responsibilities are explicit rather than assumed to belong to the person who ran the installer.

Always-on and remote use

Choose OpenClaw for a trusted, controlled environment

OpenClaw can be appropriate for an always-on assistant when it runs on a machine you control, channels are limited to paired senders and host tools are restricted to the minimum necessary. Put the Gateway behind your existing host firewall and access controls, keep credentials off shared filesystems and review every channel that can submit instructions.

Choose NemoClaw for policy-driven continuous operation

NemoClaw is the stronger choice when the assistant must stay online while processing inputs from multiple users, external services or automation. Its deny-by-default network and process controls, gateway authentication and externalized credentials address classes of mistakes that are easy to make in a hand-configured host deployment. You still need to approve integrations and monitor the stack, but the sandbox boundary is part of the deployment rather than an optional afterthought.

Can NemoClaw run OpenClaw locally?

Yes, in the sense that NemoClaw is designed to run OpenClaw as the selected agent inside an OpenShell sandbox on infrastructure you operate. The default NemoClaw onboarding selection is OpenClaw, and the stack keeps operator control on the host. “Locally” does not mean that OpenClaw bypasses the sandbox or that every model executes on the same machine: inference follows the providers and managed routes registered through NemoClaw.

If your requirement is a completely standalone OpenClaw installation with direct control over local model files, channels and host tools, install OpenClaw directly. If your requirement is OpenClaw with a governed execution boundary and managed provider access, use the NemoClaw onboarding path and verify that the desired model and integration are supported by its blueprint.

Always-on agent receiving less-trusted inputs NemoClaw The sandbox and gateway controls provide a clearer boundary than an unmodified host session.
Lowest operational complexity OpenClaw A direct Gateway deployment has fewer components to install and monitor.

A practical migration path

You do not have to decide the entire architecture before learning whether OpenClaw meets your needs. A staged approach limits risk:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prototype with OpenClaw locally. Keep channels private, pair only your own accounts and use non-sensitive test data.
  2. Inventory capabilities. Record every tool, skill, plugin, channel and provider the assistant needs; note which ones require host files, outbound network access or secrets.
  3. Classify trust. Separate personal automation from workflows that process customer data, untrusted messages or production credentials.
  4. Move governed workloads to NemoClaw. Use nemoclaw onboard, select OpenClaw, choose the managed image or a reviewed Dockerfile and register only the required providers and integrations.
  5. Test policy failures intentionally. Confirm that blocked filesystem, network and process requests fail safely and that approved requests still work.
  6. Operate with version control. Treat blueprint, image, policy and integration changes as reviewed deployment changes rather than ad hoc edits on a running host.

This approach preserves OpenClaw’s rapid experimentation while reserving NemoClaw’s heavier governance for workloads that need it.

What is not established

There is no dated independent benchmark establishing that either option is faster, cheaper, more reliable or more productive than the other. The published material does not provide a direct incident-rate comparison, a performance test, a total-cost figure or a hardware requirement that can be applied to every deployment. Do not treat live repository popularity counts as a year-specific statistic.

NVIDIA announced NemoClaw on March 16, 2026. Because the stack and its supported blueprints can evolve, verify the current installer, supported agents, image versions, provider routes and policy syntax at deployment time. The architectural distinction remains the useful decision point: direct OpenClaw control versus OpenClaw governed by NemoClaw and OpenShell.

Bottom line

Choose OpenClaw when you are comfortable operating the machine yourself and value broad platform, channel, tool and model-provider freedom. Choose NemoClaw when the assistant will be continuously available, exposed to less-trusted inputs or subject to organizational security controls that must be enforced consistently. NemoClaw is best understood as a security and operations layer around OpenClaw—not as a competing replacement for the assistant.
