An OpenClaw update that appears frozen is usually waiting on a recorded failure, a competing database writer, a package-manager problem, or a service restart that never completed. Work on the machine running the Gateway, inspect its durable update result, correct that specific cause, preview the retry, and only then run the update again. Preserve the existing state and configuration throughout recovery.

Start on the Gateway host, not the computer showing the UI

The Control UI can be open on one machine while the Gateway, updater, database, and installation files are on another. Run diagnostic commands on the Gateway host—the system that actually executes OpenClaw updates. Running them on a laptop that only displays the UI can produce irrelevant paths, permissions, and service information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Log in to the Gateway host as the account that normally owns and runs the Gateway service.
  2. Run openclaw update status --json. This reads the durable update record, including the last phase, reason code, and prior result.
  3. Run openclaw gateway status --deep --json to inspect service health, installation details, and the Gateway’s ability to answer a deep status check.
  4. If the UI is connected, select Check status, then View details. That action reads the recorded result; it does not launch another update.

Do not begin a second updater merely because the interface still shows a spinner. The JSON result is the authoritative starting point for deciding whether the process is waiting, failed, or already completed but has not been reflected in the UI.

Understand the durable update record before changing anything

OpenClaw records progress so a failed run can be diagnosed after the process exits. Read the phase and reason together rather than treating the word “stuck” as a single error. A run may have stopped during staging, validation, activation, restart, or post-restart verification. The previous result also tells you whether rollback was attempted and whether another process was writing at the same time.

How to interpret the fields

  • Phase: identifies where the updater stopped. A staging problem is different from an activation or service-health problem.
  • Reason code: gives the actionable category, such as a busy ledger, failed Doctor check, package installation error, or unavailable restart.
  • Prior result: shows what the last run actually did, including whether an installation was partially applied or rolled back.
  • Gateway health: the deep status command indicates whether the service is running, reachable, and using the installation root you expect.

Save the JSON output before attempting a repair. It provides a baseline if a manual installation changes the visible error and helps you distinguish a new failure from the original one.

Preview the retry, then run it once

After addressing the recorded cause, preview the updater:

openclaw update --dry-run

The dry run reports the selected channel, target, restart flow, and planned actions without installing packages, writing configuration, synchronizing plugins, or restarting the Gateway. Use it to catch an unexpected channel, target version, installation root, or restart path before making changes.

When the preview matches your intention, start one normal retry:

openclaw update

Keep the terminal attached long enough to see the final result. If the run fails again, stop retrying and inspect the new status record; repeated attempts can create another writer conflict or obscure the original package error.

Fix the recorded reason code

The following codes map to distinct recovery paths. Apply the action for the code actually reported by the Gateway rather than trying every remedy in sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Recorded reason What it indicates Action
update-ledger-busy Another process holds the update database write lock. Wait for competing Gateway writes to settle, inspect the previous run, and retry once. Do not start a second updater while the lock is held.
doctor-failed The pre- or post-update Doctor checks found an unresolved issue. Run openclaw doctor on the Gateway host, fix each finding it reports, then retry the update.
global-install-failed The global package installation did not complete cleanly. Read the rollback outcome and decide whether the existing installation is safe to restart. For an incomplete install or an older updater defect, use the manual package procedure, then run Doctor and restart the service.
ETARGET, E404, or EINTEGRITY The package manager cannot resolve the requested version, registry artifact, or integrity check. Verify the npm cache and configured registry or mirror. Check the requested specification with npm view <spec> version, correct the dependency or registry problem, and retry.
restart-disabled The installation does not permit the updater to restart the Gateway. Restore a supported supervisor or enable Gateway restarts, then inspect service health and the installation root.
restart-unavailable The expected restart mechanism is missing or unreachable. Repair or restore the configured supervisor, verify that the service owner can invoke it, and check deep Gateway status before another update.
Other unhealthy restart reasons The update reached activation but the service did not return healthy. Inspect supervisor logs, service health, and the installation root. Resolve the service problem before rerunning the updater.
EACCES or EPERM The account performing the update cannot write to the installation or package prefix. Correct ownership and write permissions for the actual installation owner. Do not run the whole updater under a different home with blanket sudo, and do not recursively change ownership of a shared system prefix.

When the ledger is busy

A busy ledger is a concurrency problem, not evidence that a second update is needed. Gateway writes, plugin synchronization, or another updater may still be committing data. Allow those writes to finish, review the prior result, and make a single retry after the lock clears. Killing processes or deleting the ledger can damage state and removes the evidence needed for diagnosis.

When Doctor fails

Doctor is a prerequisite check, not a generic “repair everything” switch. Run it on the same host and under the same service-owner account used by the Gateway. Resolve the concrete configuration, path, migration, or permission finding it prints. A clean Doctor run is the point at which an update retry becomes meaningful.

When package resolution fails

For ETARGET, E404, and EINTEGRITY, first determine whether the requested package specification exists in the configured registry. The command npm view <spec> version shows what that registry can currently resolve. Check cache health and any organization mirror, then correct the version or registry setting identified by the error. Do not substitute an unrelated version simply to make the command finish.

When restart or verification fails

If activation succeeded but the Gateway could not be restarted or verified, the code may already be present. Check which supervisor is responsible—systemd, launchd, Windows Task Scheduler, or a container orchestrator—and whether the service owner is allowed to use it. Confirm the installation root and service health before making a second code change. A restart failure should be repaired as an operations problem, not treated as proof that the package itself is corrupt.

Repair a failed global npm installation manually

Use the manual path when the updater reports global-install-failed, an older updater defect is suspected, or the automatic installation is incomplete. This procedure assumes a global npm installation and must be run by the account that owns the Gateway installation:

  1. Choose the target version from the failed update record or your approved release plan.
  2. Install that target explicitly: npm i -g openclaw@<target> --allow-scripts=openclaw.
  3. Apply documented repairs and migrations with openclaw doctor --fix.
  4. Restart the Gateway with openclaw gateway restart.
  5. Confirm health and the active installation with openclaw gateway status --deep.

The --allow-scripts=openclaw option permits the package’s required installation script while keeping the target explicit. If npm reports a permission error, stop and correct the installation owner or prefix rather than repeating the command with blanket privilege escalation.

After the restart, run openclaw update status --json again and retain the earlier output. If the manual installation changed the failure phase, that difference identifies whether package installation or service activation was the original blocker.

Account for the installation method and supervisor

Recovery depends on how OpenClaw was installed and what starts it. Compare the method, failure phase, supervisor, and state-preservation requirement before selecting commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Installation or deployment Typical recovery focus State-preservation rule
Global npm, pnpm, or Bun package Use the package manager and installation prefix owned by the Gateway account; run Doctor and restart through the supported service path. Keep the existing configuration and data directories; do not change a shared prefix recursively.
Git checkout Inspect the checkout’s target revision, working-tree state, dependencies, and the supervisor that launches that checkout. Back up configuration and data before changing revisions; keep runtime state separate from source changes.
systemd service Check the unit’s user, executable path, environment, and restart permissions, then inspect service health. Repair the unit or installation owner without replacing the state directory.
launchd service Verify the launch agent or daemon points to the intended installation and runs under the expected account. Preserve the user’s configuration and data while correcting the service definition.
Windows Task Scheduler Check the task’s run-as account, executable path, working directory, and whether it can restart the Gateway. Keep the profile and state locations unchanged while repairing the task.
Container orchestrator Replace the image and redeploy rather than modifying packages inside a running container. Reuse the same state and configuration mounts during replacement.

For Git installations, a package-manager command is not a substitute for correcting the checkout and its dependency environment. For service-managed installations, an apparently successful package operation is incomplete until the supervisor starts the intended executable and the deep status check is healthy.

Container deployments require an image replacement

In Docker, Podman, and Kubernetes-style deployments, package changes made inside a running container are not durable. The next replacement starts from the image, so an in-container install can disappear without warning.

  1. Pull or build an image containing the target OpenClaw version.
  2. Review the deployment manifest, entrypoint, environment, and health check.
  3. Replace or roll out the container through the orchestrator.
  4. Mount the same state and configuration locations used by the previous deployment.
  5. After the new container starts, run openclaw gateway status --deep --json and inspect openclaw update status --json.

Do not copy a temporary package tree from a running container into the host as a substitute for rebuilding the image. The durable fix is the image plus the persistent mounts, not an ad hoc mutation of an ephemeral filesystem.

Prepare older installations before a significant update

Installations older than June 2026 should not jump directly to the latest release. First move them to 2026.9.5, run that version’s Doctor migrations, and then proceed to the latest version. This intermediate step gives older configuration and database formats a supported migration path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Supported Node runtimes are Node 24.16 or newer on the 24.x line, or Node 26.1 or newer. Check the runtime used by the Gateway service—not only the version shown in an interactive shell—because supervisors can use a different executable path.

Before a significant update, create and verify a backup of configuration and state. Automatic configuration copies made during an update are not a full-state backup. Keep the verified backup until the Gateway is ready after the update.

Use restoration only as a last resort

Do not restore a snapshot as the first response to an update failure. First reinstall known-good code while preserving the current state and configuration. Restoring too early can erase useful failure evidence and roll back valid data along with the broken code.

A snapshot becomes appropriate only when older code cannot read the current configuration or database, or when the documented recovery path cannot produce a readable, healthy installation. Restore a verified pre-update snapshot, reinstall compatible code, and then validate Gateway readiness. Keep the recovery backup until that validation is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify that recovery is complete

An updater returning to the shell is not sufficient proof of success. Verification should cover the recorded result, service health, and the intended installation.

  1. Run openclaw update status --json and confirm the latest result is successful rather than an old failure.
  2. Run openclaw gateway status --deep --json and confirm the Gateway is healthy and reachable.
  3. Check that the service supervisor is running the expected installation root and account.
  4. Exercise the Control UI or an ordinary Gateway operation to confirm that configuration, plugins, and state are readable.
  5. Retain the backup and the pre-repair JSON output until the service has remained ready through the normal restart cycle.

A practical decision sequence

Use this sequence when you need a compact choice framework:

  1. Record: capture update status and deep Gateway status on the Gateway host.
  2. Classify: identify the phase—staging, validation, activation, restart, or verification—and read its reason code.
  3. Stabilize: if the ledger is busy, let writes settle; if permissions are wrong, correct the actual owner; if Doctor failed, resolve its findings.
  4. Preview: run the dry-run command and verify channel, target, restart flow, and planned actions.
  5. Retry once: run the normal updater while watching for a final result.
  6. Escalate appropriately: use the manual npm path for a damaged global install, or replace the image for a container.
  7. Validate: confirm deep service health and the durable update result before deleting backups or temporary logs.

This approach separates code problems from concurrency, package resolution, supervisor, and state-format problems. It also keeps the current configuration and data available while you repair the component that actually failed.
