OpenClaw problems become much easier to fix when you identify the failing layer before changing settings. Start with the Gateway and channel diagnostics, then check browser authentication, node permissions, or provider responses as the evidence dictates. The command ladder below distinguishes an unreachable control plane from a working Gateway, a blocked channel, an unavailable sensor, and a model-provider rejection.

OpenClaw is self-hosted software. Its Gateway is the control plane for sessions, tools, events, and channel connections; companion nodes add camera, screen, voice, and device-local actions; and it can use hosted or local model providers. You therefore do not need a particular physical accessory to resolve most failures: the remedy is usually a command, configuration correction, operating-system permission, approval, credential, or provider-side change.

Run the official diagnostic ladder first

Save the output before editing configuration or restarting services. Running the commands in order narrows the fault without destroying useful evidence.

  1. openclaw triage — collect a broad first-pass diagnosis.
  2. openclaw status — check the local runtime and basic connectivity.
  3. openclaw status --all — include the wider set of components and connections.
  4. openclaw gateway probe — test whether the Gateway endpoint answers.
  5. openclaw gateway status — inspect Gateway runtime state and capability level.
  6. openclaw doctor — look for configuration and environment problems.
  7. openclaw channels status --probe — test channel transports rather than merely reading saved configuration.
  8. openclaw logs --follow — watch the failure while reproducing it.

A healthy Gateway reports a running runtime, successful connectivity, and a capability level. A healthy channel probe reports live transport state such as works or audit ok. If one layer is healthy, do not keep changing that layer while the symptom is elsewhere.

Evidence What it establishes Next place to investigate
Gateway runtime and probe succeed The control plane is running and reachable Browser origin/device auth, channel policy, node state, or model provider
Gateway status fails The core service is stopped, blocked, or misconfigured Gateway mode, bind authentication, port ownership, and logs
Channel probe says works or audit ok Transport authentication and reachability are functioning Pairing, allowlists, mention gating, scopes, or message routing
Node is online but a tool fails The connection exists but execution is blocked Foreground state, OS permissions, approvals, and command allowlists
Several models return the same upstream error The rejection may be outside OpenClaw Provider, CDN, WAF, bot-management, or reverse-proxy events

When the Control UI or Gateway will not connect

Separate browser reachability from Gateway startup

A Control UI message such as gateway connect failed usually means the browser is targeting the wrong URL or port, or that the Gateway is not reachable at that address. Confirm the exact endpoint exposed by the running Gateway and compare it with the URL configured in the UI. A successful local process does not prove that a browser on another machine can reach its bind address.

If the UI says unauthorized, check the configured authentication mode, token or password, and the paired-device state. If it reports origin not allowed, correct the browser origin policy. device identity required means the browser must use an approved device identity and a secure, authenticated context; repeatedly refreshing the page will not create that identity.

Fix startup mode and bind errors

Read the exact startup line in openclaw logs --follow or the service output. Each common signature points to a different action:

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Gateway start blocked: set gateway.mode=local: the selected startup mode and configuration disagree. Set gateway.mode to local when this instance is intended to run the Gateway locally, then restart it.
  • refusing to bind gateway ... without auth: the Gateway is being exposed on a non-loopback address without a valid authentication path. Configure token or password authentication before binding beyond the local host.
  • another gateway instance is already listening or EADDRINUSE: another process owns the port. Identify and stop the conflicting Gateway or process, or assign this instance a different port. Do not launch repeated copies until port ownership is clear.

After a change, rerun openclaw gateway probe and openclaw gateway status. The troubleshooting documentation notes that a missing operator.read scope limits read diagnostics; it does not mean the connection itself failed. Treat that warning as a permissions issue in diagnostics, not proof that the Gateway is down.

When a channel is connected but delivers no messages

Transport connectivity and message delivery are separate checks. Run openclaw channels status --probe, then inspect pending senders with openclaw pairing list --channel <channel>, broaden the runtime view with openclaw status --deep, and keep openclaw logs --follow running while sending a test message.

Interpret the message-routing symptoms

  • mention required: group mention gating blocked the message. Mention the bot or change the group policy if that behavior is intended.
  • pairing or pending approval: the sender has not been approved. Complete the channel’s pairing approval rather than repeatedly sending messages.
  • Allowlist rejection: the sender, room, or group is outside the configured allowlist. Add the intended identity or destination using the channel’s configuration.
  • missing_scope: the channel credential lacks a required API scope. Grant the scope and refresh or replace the credential as required by that channel.
  • not_in_channel: the bot account is not a member of the destination. Invite it or choose a channel where it is present.
  • Forbidden, 401, or 403: verify channel authentication, token validity, account permissions, and any workspace or server restrictions.

Inspect channel configuration for direct-message policy, group allowlists, mention requirements, and API scopes. A probe that reports a working transport does not override those delivery policies; it only shows that the channel connection itself is alive.

When a paired node camera, microphone, location, or screen tool fails

Confirm the node and its capabilities

Start with openclaw nodes status to verify that the node is online. Use openclaw nodes describe --node <idOrNameOrIp> to see the advertised capabilities, then openclaw approvals get --node <idOrNameOrIp> to inspect execution approvals. Keep openclaw logs --follow open and reproduce the tool call so the error is tied to a current attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A paired node can still be unusable. The companion app may be backgrounded, an operating-system permission may be missing, or an action may be waiting for approval. Check the host operating system’s privacy controls for camera, microphone, location, and screen recording or capture, and grant only the permissions the requested capability needs.

Use node error text literally

  • NODE_BACKGROUND_UNAVAILABLE: bring the node app to the foreground. The requested capability is unavailable while the app is backgrounded.
  • *_PERMISSION_REQUIRED: grant the corresponding operating-system permission, then retry.
  • LOCATION_PERMISSION_REQUIRED: enable location access for the node app; location services may also need to be enabled at the system level.
  • SYSTEM_RUN_DENIED: approval required: approve the requested command for that node.
  • SYSTEM_RUN_DENIED: allowlist miss: the command is outside the node’s execution allowlist. Adjust the allowlist deliberately or use an allowed command.

Do not unpair and re-pair a node merely because a sensor failed. Pairing proves identity and connectivity; it does not grant camera, microphone, location, screen, or command-execution permission.

When model requests return 401, 403, or 429

Establish whether OpenClaw or the provider rejected the request

Run openclaw models status, openclaw status, and openclaw gateway status, then inspect live logs. A valid Gateway and model configuration can coexist with a provider rejection, so the HTTP status must be read with the response body and timing.

A 401 generally requires checking the selected provider credential, API key, token expiry, and the account or project associated with that credential. A 403 can be an authorization problem, but a generic upstream response such as “Your request was blocked” may come from a CDN, web application firewall, bot-management system, or reverse proxy rather than from the model service itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle Anthropic long-context 429 responses

An Anthropic HTTP 429 may indicate that the request asks for a native one-million-token context window or carries the legacy context1m: true setting and the credential is not eligible for that usage. This is different from ordinary short-window rate limiting.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  1. Check the selected model and request settings for a native 1M context request or legacy context1m: true.
  2. Retry with a standard-context-window model.
  3. If long context is required, use a credential or API key that is eligible for it.
  4. Configure fallback models so a temporary eligibility or quota rejection does not halt the session.

Keep the context-window qualification attached to the diagnosis: changing models may solve this specific eligibility response, but it does not establish that every 429 is a quota problem.

Investigate generic upstream 403 responses

Test more than one model. If several models fail in the same way, inspect the response for HTML or security text and compare provider-side security events with the timestamp in OpenClaw’s logs. A tiny direct curl request can succeed while an SDK-shaped request is blocked because headers, body size, or request patterns differ. That result points toward an intermediary security layer, not proof that OpenClaw’s model configuration is correct or incorrect.

Choose the least disruptive fix

Use the failing layer, evidence type, required action, and reversibility to decide what to change. Diagnostic commands and log collection are reversible; configuration edits, permission grants, allowlist changes, credential replacement, and provider-side policy changes have broader effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Failing layer Strongest evidence Typical action Reversibility
Browser or Control UI Connect error, origin or device-identity message Correct URL, origin, secure context, or paired credentials Mostly reversible
Gateway Startup log, failed probe, EADDRINUSE Repair mode, add bind authentication, stop conflict, or change port Configuration or deployment change
Channel Probe result, pairing state, scope or allowlist error Approve sender, adjust policy, add scope, join channel, or refresh credential Policy or credential change
Node Node status, capability description, literal permission or approval error Foreground app, grant OS permission, approve command, or edit allowlist OS or policy change
Model provider HTTP response, response body, cross-model comparison, provider event Use eligible credential, standard context, fallback model, or provider-side remediation Credential, configuration, or external change

A safe recovery sequence

  1. Capture openclaw triage, status output, the exact failing command, and a timestamp.
  2. Run the Gateway and channel probes before restarting anything.
  3. Read the literal error and map it to browser, Gateway, channel, node, or provider layer.
  4. Make one targeted change—such as granting one permission, approving one sender, correcting one port, or selecting one fallback model.
  5. Re-run the relevant probe and reproduce the original action.
  6. Only then make broader changes, such as replacing credentials, changing bind exposure, or altering allowlists.

Keep the Gateway state directory owned by the user who runs OpenClaw. The project documentation specifically advises not to remove plugin configuration to solve an ownership problem; fix file ownership or run OpenClaw as the user that owns the state directory. Deleting state can discard pairing, approvals, and other evidence without addressing the underlying failure.
