There is no universal winner. Start with GPT-6 Astra when broad reasoning, difficult coding, and tool use matter most. Choose Claude Opus 5.5 when clear prose, long interactive sessions, dense documents, and agentic software work are central. Choose Gemini 3.8 Flash when low token cost, high throughput, and multimodal or production-scale workloads dominate. Those recommendations come from vendor-published evaluations that use different benchmark versions and test harnesses, so a small trial with your own prompts should decide a close call.

The practical choice is less about which model has the highest headline score and more about the shape of your work: how much context you send, whether the model must operate tools, how costly errors are, how much editing you tolerate, and whether latency or price limits your volume.

Quick comparison

The table uses the current flagship examples documented by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in 2026. Prices are API token prices, not a promise about a consumer subscription bill.

Model Best fit Published price Context and tools Important qualification
GPT-6 Astra Complex reasoning, coding, tool-using workflows $10 per million input tokens; $50 per million output tokens 1.05 million-token context; function, web, file, and computer-use tools OpenAI says API evaluations can differ from production ChatGPT because system prompts and available tools differ.
Claude Opus 5.5 Clear writing, long knowledge-work sessions, dense documents, agentic coding Anthropic says token-billed work is about 40% less than Opus 5; a comparable per-token figure is not stated on the cited product page. Vision and computer-use capabilities are emphasized; a directly comparable context-window number is not stated on that page. Anthropic reports standard errors for benchmark results and says safeguards and fallback handling affect scores.
Gemini 3.8 Flash High-volume agents, multimodal files, charts, video, and cost-sensitive production Introductory $0.75 input and $3.75 output per million tokens through December 31, 2026; regular prices shown are $1.50 and $7.50. Long-context and multimodal evaluations; the model card covers software engineering and agent tasks. Google warns about hallucinations, occasional slowness or timeouts, and extra token use at higher effort.
GPT-6.1 Sol OpenAI workflows where cost matters more than the flagship tier $2 per million input tokens; $10 per million output tokens OpenAI lists the same 1.05 million-token context and tool categories as Astra. It is positioned by OpenAI as the intelligence-cost balance rather than its top model.

What the published evidence actually tells you

These numbers are directional, not a single league table. OpenAI reports GPT-6 Astra on Terminal-Bench 4.0, DeepSWE v1.1, FrontierCode 1.1 Extended, the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, GPQA Diamond, and ARC-AGI-2. Google reports Gemini 3.8 Flash on Terminal-Bench 2.1, DeepSWE v1.1, GDPVal-AA v2, GDP.PDF, CharXiv, and LVBench. A different benchmark version can change task difficulty, scoring, available tools, and the mix of problems. Claude’s published material adds uncertainty ranges and explains that safety interventions and fallback behavior can change an agent score. A percentage from one row therefore cannot be treated as a controlled head-to-head result against a percentage from another row.

OpenAI’s catalog says, “If you’re not sure where to start, use GPT-6 Astra, our flagship model for complex reasoning and coding.” Anthropic describes Opus 5.5 as its most capable Opus model for coding, agents, and knowledge work, while also emphasizing clearer communication and adherence to writing rules. Google positions Gemini 3.8 Flash as a cost-effective, production-ready model for general-purpose agents. Those statements describe intended positioning; they do not guarantee that every prompt will favor the named model.

Which model is best for coding?

GPT-6 Astra: strongest general starting point for difficult engineering

OpenAI reports 57.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 and 74.1% on DeepSWE v1.1 for Astra. Its table also lists 64.5% on FrontierCode 1.1 Extended and 67.0 on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index. The model has a 1.05 million-token context window and can use function, web, file, and computer-use tools, which suits repository-scale tasks that require inspecting files, running steps, and revising a plan.

Use Astra when the task combines several kinds of difficulty: understanding an unfamiliar codebase, reasoning about a subtle bug, changing multiple files, and verifying the result with tools. Its higher output price makes it harder to justify for routine transformations or very large volumes of simple completions. OpenAI’s benchmark footnote matters operationally: an API test with your own system prompt and tools may behave differently from a production ChatGPT session.

Claude Opus 5.5: a strong choice for extended coding and agent loops

Anthropic explicitly targets Opus 5.5 at serious coding and agent work. Its product description emphasizes completing real software tasks, following instructions, communicating clearly, and working across dense documents and applications. That combination is useful when an engineer wants to keep an interactive session alive while the model explores a codebase, explains trade-offs, applies edits, and responds to review feedback.

The public material does not provide a directly comparable context-window figure or a single cross-vendor coding score. Treat Opus 5.5 as a workflow candidate rather than assuming that its positioning proves superiority on your repository. If prose quality and the ability to maintain a coherent conversation are as important as raw patch throughput, it deserves an early trial.

Gemini 3.8 Flash: high coding scores at a scale-oriented price

Google reports 73.7% on DeepSWE v1.1 and 89.4% on Terminal-Bench 2.1 for Gemini 3.8 Flash. Those are impressive figures, but the Terminal-Bench version differs from OpenAI’s 4.0 result, so the percentages are not directly rankable. Gemini is designed for production-ready agents and software engineering, and its much lower listed token price can make repeated code review, test generation, and parallel agent jobs economically practical.

Flash is especially attractive when you need many independent coding calls, multimodal inputs, or an agent that must process large numbers of tickets. Google cautions that higher effort can consume extra tokens and that requests may occasionally be slow or time out; build retries and observability into unattended jobs.

Coding decision rules

  • Pick Astra for the hardest mixed reasoning-and-tool task when cost is secondary.
  • Pick Opus 5.5 when a long, conversational coding session and clear explanations reduce human supervision.
  • Pick Gemini 3.8 Flash when throughput, parallel agents, multimodal inputs, or per-token economics dominate.
  • Use a cheaper tier for deterministic edits only after measuring whether the extra correction work cancels the token savings.

Which model is best for writing?

There is no controlled writing benchmark in the cited material, so a numerical winner cannot be claimed. Anthropic makes the clearest explicit prose claims: Opus 5.5 is described as communicating more clearly, avoiding unnecessary jargon, and following writing rules. That makes it a sensible first test for reports, policy drafts, editorial rewrites, and documents where voice and instruction-following matter.

GPT-6 Astra and Gemini 3.8 Flash are documented primarily around reasoning, coding, agents, and knowledge workflows rather than a prose-quality score. They may still be excellent writers, particularly when the assignment requires research synthesis, structured reasoning, citations supplied by the user, or tool-assisted fact gathering. The right test is an identical packet of representative work: give each model the same brief, source material, audience, style constraints, and revision request.

Evaluate writing by edit burden, not first-draft polish

  1. Prepare three real assignments: a short explanation, a long document, and a piece that must follow a strict house style.
  2. Use the same source text, word range, headings, and forbidden claims for every model.
  3. Have a reviewer mark factual corrections, structural changes, tone edits, and unsupported assertions separately.
  4. Record the time from prompt to publishable copy, including the cost of follow-up turns and model-generated rewrites.
  5. Keep the model that produces the lowest total edit burden, even if another produces a more impressive first paragraph.

Which model is best for analysis and knowledge work?

GPT-6 Astra for broad, reasoning-heavy analysis

OpenAI reports 96.0% on GPQA Diamond and 95.0% on ARC-AGI-2, alongside professional, academic, long-context, and data-science evaluations. Those figures indicate a strong fit for problems that require chaining evidence, making a plan, and using tools to inspect files or external information. Astra is a good default for an analyst who cannot predict whether the next task will be quantitative, technical, or research-oriented.

Claude Opus 5.5 for dense documents and collaborative interpretation

Anthropic highlights dense-document vision, computer use, and multi-application tasks. Choose Opus when the analyst must read a large set of reports, maintain a nuanced discussion, and produce clear explanations for non-specialists. Ask for page or cell references in every conclusion and verify important figures independently; fluent prose is not evidence that an extraction is correct.

Gemini 3.8 Flash for multimodal and repeatable analysis

Google reports a 1545 Elo score on GDPVal-AA v2, 35.0% on GDP.PDF, 86.2% on CharXiv without tools, and 87.8% agentic on LVBench. The set covers finance-style professional work, PDF comprehension, chart reasoning, and video understanding. Flash is therefore a natural candidate for pipelines that repeatedly classify documents, inspect charts, or process video at scale. The GDP.PDF result is a benchmark score, not a guarantee that every PDF layout will parse cleanly.

Context windows, modalities, and tools

Astra and Sol are listed with a 1.05 million-token context window. That capacity can reduce manual chunking for a large repository or document set, but it does not make every detail equally retrievable: clear instructions, staged summaries, and targeted questions still improve accuracy. Anthropic’s cited page emphasizes vision and computer use but does not state a directly comparable context number. Google documents long-context and multimodal evaluations for Flash rather than presenting one equivalent capacity figure in the supplied material.

Tool access changes the nature of an answer. A model that can call functions, inspect files, browse approved sources, or operate a computer can verify intermediate results instead of merely predicting text. It can also make costly mistakes: limit permissions, log every call, require confirmation before destructive actions, and set timeouts. Compare models with the same tools and system instructions or you will be measuring the surrounding harness as much as the model.

Cost, pricing, and total spend

Gemini 3.8 Flash has the lowest listed token prices in this comparison. Google’s introductory rate is $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens through December 31, 2026; the regular prices shown are $1.50 and $7.50. The introductory date is a one-time pricing condition, so a production budget should model the regular rate as well.

Token price is only one part of total cost. Long prompts, repeated context, cached input rules, effort settings, tool calls, retries, concurrency limits, and human review can dominate the bill. Measure cost per accepted result, not cost per request. A cheap model that needs three corrective turns may cost more than a costly model that succeeds in one.

Reliability, safety, and failure modes

  • Hallucination: Google explicitly warns that Flash may exhibit foundation-model limitations such as hallucinations. Require source-grounded answers, schema validation, and human review for consequential outputs.
  • Timeouts and slowness: Flash can occasionally be slow or time out. Use bounded retries with exponential backoff, idempotent job design, and a dead-letter queue for failures.
  • Evaluation variance: Anthropic reports standard error of plus or minus 2.6 points for Opus 5.5 on its Terminal-Bench result and plus or minus 1.6 to 2 points for other Claude models. Small score differences may not be meaningful.
  • Safeguards and fallbacks: Anthropic notes that safety interventions and fallback handling affect agent scores. Test refusal and escalation behavior on the edge cases your application will actually receive.
  • Environment mismatch: OpenAI notes that API evaluations can differ from production ChatGPT because of system prompts and available tools. Reproduce your deployment configuration during acceptance testing.

Choose by workflow

Your priority First model to test Why What to verify
One general-purpose model for difficult work GPT-6 Astra OpenAI positions it as the starting point for complex reasoning and coding, with broad tool access. Whether the premium output price is offset by fewer corrections and better tool execution.
Editorial quality and sustained collaboration Claude Opus 5.5 Clear communication, instruction-following, dense-document work, and agentic sessions are explicit strengths. Consistency of voice, factual extraction, and behavior on long conversations.
High-volume API or agent workloads Gemini 3.8 Flash Lowest listed token prices and strong vendor-reported software, document, chart, and video results. Timeout rate, retry cost, output quality at higher volume, and the end of introductory pricing.
OpenAI-compatible work with a tighter budget GPT-6.1 Sol Lower listed prices than Astra while retaining the documented context and tool categories. Whether its quality is sufficient for your hardest prompts before routing work away from Astra.

Run a fair bake-off before committing

A short, controlled trial is more reliable than a generic leaderboard. Use real but sanitized tasks from the workload you are buying for.

  1. Define the task mix. Include at least five coding tasks, three writing tasks, and three analysis tasks. Add one failure-prone case, such as ambiguous requirements or a badly formatted document.
  2. Freeze the inputs. Give every model the same prompt, files, context, tool permissions, temperature or effort policy, and output schema where the service allows it.
  3. Score outcomes. For code, measure tests passed, security issues, and review changes. For writing, measure factual corrections, style edits, and time to approval. For analysis, measure extraction accuracy, reasoning errors, and unsupported conclusions.
  4. Measure operations. Record latency, timeout and refusal rates, input and output tokens, tool-call count, retries, and total spend.
  5. Repeat representative prompts. Run each task more than once when nondeterminism matters. A single spectacular or failed response is not a stable estimate.
  6. Set acceptance thresholds. Reject a model that misses a safety, accuracy, or latency threshold even if its average score is attractive.
  7. Route by difficulty. If results split by task type, reserve the strongest model for high-risk work and send routine volume to the cheaper tier.

A practical routing pattern

Many teams do not need one model for every request. A lightweight classifier can identify task type, document size, tool requirements, and risk. Route complex, ambiguous, or high-consequence jobs to Astra; route writing-heavy collaborative work to Opus 5.5; route repetitive multimodal or high-volume jobs to Flash; and route straightforward OpenAI tasks to Sol when its measured quality clears your threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the routing rule observable. Store the model name, version, prompt template, token counts, tool calls, latency, retries, and reviewer outcome with each job. Re-run the bake-off when a model version, price, context policy, or tool integration changes. This prevents a temporary introductory price or a benchmark improvement from silently changing your quality or margin assumptions.

Bottom line

For a single default, GPT-6 Astra is the safest starting point for broad reasoning, coding, and tool use. Opus 5.5 is the better first experiment when polished writing and long, interactive knowledge work define success. Gemini 3.8 Flash is the value and scale leader on the listed prices, with unusually broad multimodal and agent benchmarks. None of those labels replaces testing: benchmark versions differ, writing lacks a controlled cross-vendor score, and real total cost includes corrections, retries, tools, and review.
