OpenAI opened applications on October 15, 2026, for the Rosalind Academic Plan, a program that can give approved research labs at U.S. universities up to 30 complimentary ChatGPT Business Standard seats for 12 months, plus access to the GPT-Rosalind life-sciences model after a separate trusted-access review. The plan is for university labs—not individual researchers, commercial organizations, or unrestricted collaborators—and it does not include API credits.
What the Rosalind Academic Plan includes
The offer places an approved lab in a managed ChatGPT Business workspace. Each eligible workspace can receive up to 30 Standard seats at no charge for 12 months. A payment card is required during setup, and the usual ChatGPT usage limits still apply even while the seats are complimentary.

Labs that need more than 30 seats are directed to contact OpenAI Support rather than adding seats automatically.

The primary applicant must be a principal investigator (PI) or a designated lab lead at a U.S. university. The applicant verifies an institutional email address and supplies information used for eligibility and safety review.

Information required in the application
- University, department, lab name and lab website
- The PI or lab lead’s institutional profile and research focus
- How the lab intends to use GPT-Rosalind
- Requested members and their institutional affiliations
- Workspace and data-handling information
- The name and contact details of a trained institutional biosafety contact
OpenAI uses Persona to verify the university and the identity of the PI or lab lead. Passing Persona verification by itself does not mean the application has been approved. A university email address or an existing subscription also does not guarantee acceptance.
Applying with or without a university Enterprise agreement
Labs at universities without an OpenAI Enterprise agreement use the academic-lab application. If the university already has an Enterprise agreement, the lab requests GPT-Rosalind through that agreement’s access process instead of submitting the standalone academic-lab route. The two paths therefore depend on the university’s existing relationship with OpenAI, not simply on whether an individual researcher already pays for ChatGPT.

How membership and workspace governance work
The verified PI or lab lead is the sole owner of the workspace. That person manages member access and cannot appoint additional owners or administrators. The owner must remove a member when that person leaves the lab or no longer needs access.

Every member must use a verified institutional email address on the same domain as the approved PI or lab lead. Visiting researchers and collaborators whose addresses belong to another institution’s domain cannot be added to the workspace. Access remains subject to safety monitoring and responsible-use requirements, and OpenAI can revoke access.

Data retention and privacy limits
The workspace uses standard ChatGPT Business data-retention terms by default. Depending on the workspace settings and applicable law, administrators may be able to access, export, retain, or delete workspace data. Zero Data Retention is not available under this offer, so labs should review their institutional data policies before uploading regulated, confidential, or otherwise restricted material.
What GPT-Rosalind is designed to do
OpenAI describes GPT-Rosalind as a life-sciences model covering medicinal chemistry, genomics, quantitative biology, wet-lab troubleshooting, and tool-assisted research workflows. Its plugins are intended to connect sourced-evidence retrieval, biological interpretation, and bioinformatics execution while preserving artifacts and provenance for later review.

Those capabilities are separate from receiving the 30 Business seats: GPT-Rosalind access is conditional on trusted-access approval, activation of the lab workspace, and enablement for individual members by the PI or lab lead.

OpenAI published the following 2026 evaluation figures, comparing GPT-Rosalind with GPT-5.5. They are vendor-reported results, not independent replication, so they should be treated as claims about OpenAI’s evaluation rather than a guarantee of performance in a particular laboratory.

OpenAI’s update quotes Mishal Patel, Group Vice President, AI & Digital Innovation, R&D, Novo Nordisk: “Life sciences research is complex, data-rich, and interdisciplinary. To deliver meaningful value for researchers, advanced AI models must be grounded in trusted scientific data, connected to validated tools, and integrated into the real-world workflows researchers use every day.”
What a lab should check before applying
- Confirm that the lab is part of a U.S. university and identify the PI or designated lab lead who will own the workspace.
- Determine whether the university already has an OpenAI Enterprise agreement; use that agreement’s access process if it does.
- Prepare the institutional profile, research description, intended GPT-Rosalind use, member list, workspace data-handling details, and trained biosafety contact.
- Make sure every proposed member can use a verified address on the same institutional domain as the applicant.
- Plan for standard data retention, administrator access to workspace data, and the absence of Zero Data Retention.
- Have a payment card available for setup, even though the Standard seats are complimentary for 12 months.
- After approval, enable GPT-Rosalind only for members who need it and remove access promptly when roles change.
Bottom line for university researchers
The Rosalind Academic Plan is a limited, governed access program: approved U.S. university labs can receive 30 or fewer free Business Standard seats for one year, while GPT-Rosalind requires additional trusted-access approval. It is not an API-credit program, it does not support cross-university collaborators in the same workspace, and it does not provide Zero Data Retention. Labs should apply through the correct academic or Enterprise route and involve their institutional biosafety contact before bringing research data into the workspace.
