OpenAI is moving ChatGPT advertising from a limited launch to a major growth business. It is expanding the ad team, recruiting heavily from Meta and other companies, cutting acquisition costs for some campaigns, and adding self-serve tools, agency support and new ad formats.
The expansion is happening quickly, but ChatGPT Ads is still a young platform. Advertiser totals, pricing and performance figures should be read as dated estimates or individual examples rather than a permanent rate card.
What changed in OpenAI’s advertising business
A rapidly expanded advertising team
The Information reported on October 15, 2026, that OpenAI had nearly 140 employees on its advertising team. Crustdata data cited in that report indicated that almost half of those employees joined between July and September 2026. Meta was the largest single source of new hires, although OpenAI said it was recruiting from a broad range of companies rather than pursuing one employer exclusively.

That structure is consistent with a company trying to sell campaigns to both individual businesses and large marketing organizations.

Advertiser numbers are rising sharply
Dan Salmon of New Street Research estimated, in figures reported by The Information, that about 60,000 advertisers were using ChatGPT Ads in early October 2026. The estimate was approximately 20,000 in late August, so the reported advertiser base tripled in roughly six weeks. These are third-party estimates, not a continuously audited public count.
OpenAI says revenue has reached a significant run rate
In an August 31, 2026 announcement, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days after launch and was being used by tens of thousands of advertisers. An annualized run rate extrapolates current revenue; it is not the same as $1 billion already collected during a full year.
Why ChatGPT is attractive to advertisers
OpenAI’s pitch is based on intent rather than only audience size. Dave Dugan, OpenAI’s vice president of global ad solutions, told The Information that about 20% of ChatGPT queries signal a desire to purchase a product or service. A user asking for software, travel options or a product recommendation can be closer to a buying decision than someone passively scrolling through a social feed.

That intent signal does not guarantee a sale. It indicates the type of query OpenAI says it can serve, while conversion rates depend on the offer, targeting, landing page and measurement setup.

How ChatGPT Ads are being built
Sponsored placements below answers
The initial format places sponsored content below relevant ChatGPT answers. OpenAI is supplementing those placements with visual formats as the platform develops, creating more inventory than a single text placement can provide.
Sponsored Agents and prompt-based creation
OpenAI’s September 16 announcement introduced Sponsored Agents, along with prompt-based ad creation and expanded creative tools in Ads Manager. The aim is to let marketers describe a campaign or creative concept in natural language and use AI-assisted workflows to produce and manage assets.
Sponsored Agents are a distinct format from a conventional banner or search result. Their availability, presentation and eligibility can change as OpenAI rolls out the product.
Connections to marketing systems
The same September announcement identified HubSpot as OpenAI’s first CRM partner and Shopify as its first ecommerce partner. These integrations are intended to connect campaign activity with customer data or online-store workflows. OpenAI’s May 5 announcement also described partner support for budgeting, bidding and creative, and confirmed CPC bidding as part of the platform’s development.
What ChatGPT advertising costs
One reported software-advertising campaign illustrates how OpenAI is trying to win customers on price. Cole Furrh of InterTeam Marketing told The Information that the campaign paid about $5 per click on ChatGPT, compared with $30 to $50 per click on Google. This is an agency’s example for one client and period, not a universal ChatGPT rate or a promise that every advertiser will see the same result.
Rank #4
| Platform | Pricing or cost evidence | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Ads | About $5 per click in one software-campaign example reported by InterTeam Marketing | Anecdotal, client-specific figure; CPC bidding is supported, but no universal public rate card is established here |
| $30–$50 per click in the same software-campaign comparison | The comparison supplied by the agency for that campaign, not a market-wide Google average | |
| Meta | Meta reported a 12% year-over-year increase in average price per ad in the second quarter of 2026 | An investor-reported platform-wide trend; it is not a directly comparable CPC quote |
OpenAI’s lower early prices appear designed to reduce the barrier to trial while the company builds supply and demand. Prices can change with query relevance, competition, format, geography and bidding conditions, so advertisers should treat any quoted number as time- and campaign-specific.
How OpenAI compares with Meta and Google
Scale and maturity
Meta operates an established global advertising business with mature delivery, measurement and sales systems. Google likewise has long-running search and display marketplaces. OpenAI is scaling a 2026 launch, so its reported growth rate is higher from a much smaller base and should not be read as equivalent business scale.

Access and campaign management
OpenAI is adding self-serve Ads Manager capabilities, agency assistance and integrations with Shopify and HubSpot. The Information named TP, Concentrix and Accenture among firms helping sell ads or set up campaigns, although their current referral or partner-program terms require separate confirmation.
Measurement and performance evidence
OpenAI is adding effectiveness tools, but the public performance examples available so far are largely agency anecdotes or company announcements. They can show why advertisers are testing ChatGPT, but they do not establish a benchmark return on ad spend across industries.

- Confirm access. OpenAI directs businesses to ads.openai.com. Check whether signup is available in your country, which ad formats your account can use and whether an agency or partner is required.
- Define the buying event. Decide whether success means a click, lead, completed checkout or another action before setting a CPC budget.
- Separate the test from the headline numbers. Use a controlled budget and compare ChatGPT traffic with the channels you already buy; do not assume the reported $5 example will apply to your category.
- Connect the right systems. Ecommerce companies should verify Shopify functionality, while teams using CRM-based lead management should confirm what the HubSpot integration supports for their account and region.
- Review creative and disclosure requirements. Prompt-generated assets and Sponsored Agents may have different approval, labeling or eligibility rules from standard placements.
What the hiring and price cuts signal
The combination of Meta recruiting, industry and agency teams, rapidly rising advertiser counts and lower reported CPCs points to an aggressive customer-acquisition phase. OpenAI is prioritizing enough sales capacity, tooling and inventory to make ChatGPT a repeatable advertising channel rather than a small experiment.
That strategy also creates uncertainty. The platform is changing quickly, the largest usage figures come from different measurement sources, and OpenAI has not published a complete public rate card covering every format and market. Advertisers evaluating it should therefore judge current account terms and measured conversions, not extrapolate from the company’s annualized revenue claim or a single agency case.
