If you want something to play before Crazy Taxi: World Tour arrives, start with Sonic Frontiers on PS5. It offers fast movement, large areas to explore, puzzles, battles and side quests, although it is an action-adventure platformer rather than a taxi-driving game. Sega has announced Crazy Taxi: World Tour for 2027, describing it as high-speed action and open-city driving—not officially as an open-world game—so the best substitute depends on whether you want speed, free exploration or arcade-style pressure.
What Sega has actually announced
Sega announced Crazy Taxi: World Tour on June 8, 2026, for release in 2027. The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Sega calls it a “brand-new entry” in the Crazy Taxi series, so it should not be described as a confirmed remake or reboot of the original.
The announcement’s wording matters when you are choosing a temporary replacement. Sega says the game is built around “high-speed action and open-city driving” and describes the new installment as delivering enhanced gameplay. It does not call the game “open world” in the announcement. That may ultimately describe how the finished game feels, but it is not an official classification yet.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe original arcade concept creates a particular expectation: driving quickly, navigating a city and dealing with time pressure. A game can resemble one part of that experience without reproducing the whole loop. The recommendations below therefore separate four questions: are you driving or travelling on foot, is the game time-critical or exploratory, how freely can you move through its spaces, and is speed or discovery the main attraction?

The best game to play now: Sonic Frontiers on PS5
Why it is the closest supported match
Sonic Frontiers is the strongest currently available PS5 choice supported by Sega’s own product description. Sega labels its environments an “Open-Zone” map and highlights high-speed gameplay, battles, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space levels. Those features give you a large-space exploration game with a strong emphasis on movement, rather than a linear stage-only experience.
That makes it a sensible wait-time purchase if what attracts you to Crazy Taxi: World Tour is the feeling of moving quickly through a broad environment and choosing where to go next. You can spend time covering open areas, looking for activities or switching between exploration and more structured challenges. The combination of speed and roaming is the meaningful overlap—not a shared vehicle system.
Where Sonic Frontiers is different
Sonic Frontiers is an action-adventure platforming game. You control Sonic on foot, and the core activities are movement, combat, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space stages. Sega’s description does not present it as a driving game, and it does not promise the taxi fares, passenger routes or arcade countdown structure associated with Crazy Taxi.
Choose it when you want open-area movement and discovery. Do not choose it expecting a direct substitute for weaving through traffic while racing a clock. The difference is important: Crazy Taxi: World Tour is officially framed around open-city driving, while Sonic Frontiers is framed around an Open-Zone action-adventure loop.

PS5 edition and physical-copy option
Sega’s product overview lists a physical version of Sonic Frontiers. If you prefer a disc rather than a digital download, search for the exact phrase “Sonic Frontiers PS5 game” and verify that the listing identifies the PlayStation 5 edition. Availability, packaging and retailer pricing can change, so check the current product page before ordering.
How the available and upcoming games compare
The table distinguishes games you can play now from projects that are only announced. “Open-world” is used only where the cited official description uses that term; Sega’s wording for Crazy Taxi: World Tour is “open-city driving,” and for Sonic Frontiers it is “Open-Zone.”
| Game | Status | Movement focus | Space description | Main appeal | How it relates to Crazy Taxi: World Tour |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crazy Taxi: World Tour | Announced for 2027 | Driving | Open-city driving | High-speed action | The target experience; not yet available |
| Sonic Frontiers | Available on PS5 | High-speed on-foot movement | Open-Zone map | Exploration, battles, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space levels | Best current match for speed plus roaming, but not taxi driving |
| Fable | Planned for PS5 in Autumn 2026 | Not established in the cited announcement | Fully open world in Albion | A new beginning for the series | Relevant as a future open-world watchlist game, not a game to play now |
| Project Windless | Upcoming for PS5 | Not established in the cited announcement | Open-world action RPG | A setting more than a thousand years before The Bird That Drinks Tears | Relevant as a future open-world project, not a current substitute |
What to expect from Crazy Taxi: World Tour while you wait
Release timing and platforms
The announced release window is 2027, with no more precise date established in the cited Sega announcement. The platform list includes PS5 alongside Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. If PS5 is your main system, you can plan around that confirmed platform rather than assuming an older-console version.
It is a new entry, not a confirmed remake
Sega’s wording is “brand-new entry.” That signals a new game in the series, but it does not establish whether particular characters, maps, missions or systems from earlier games will return. Treat comparisons with the arcade original as expectations about the series’ identity, not as confirmed details about this 2027 release.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Why “open-city” is the safer description
“Open world” can imply a seamless map, unrestricted travel, optional activities and a specific progression structure. Sega has not confirmed those details in the announcement used here. “Open-city driving” tells you what is known: the game emphasizes driving at speed in a city-like environment. Until Sega publishes more systems or map information, avoid assuming a particular map size, traffic model, mission format or online mode.
Upcoming PS5 open-world games to add to your watchlist
Fable
PlayStation Blog reported on January 22, 2026, that the Fable reboot is planned for PS5 in Autumn 2026. The article describes Albion as fully open world and calls the project a new beginning rather than a remake or sequel.
Fable belongs on a future-release list, not in a list of games you can start today while waiting for Crazy Taxi: World Tour. Its confirmed value for this comparison is the open-world setting and PS5 release plan. The cited announcement does not establish a driving system or a speed-focused loop, so it should not be presented as a mechanical substitute for a city-driving game.

That information is enough to identify it as a substantial future open-world project, but not as an immediately playable recommendation. The cited description does not establish its release date, movement mechanics or whether driving is part of the game. Add it to a follow list if you want another PS5 open-world title to monitor, while keeping it separate from games available during the wait.

If speed is the priority
Pick Sonic Frontiers. Sega explicitly emphasizes high-speed gameplay, so it is the only currently available title in the supplied information with a confirmed speed-oriented focus. Its movement is on foot, but the emphasis on covering space quickly can satisfy the desire for momentum.
If free exploration is the priority
Pick Sonic Frontiers for an available option, or track Fable and Project Windless for later. Sonic Frontiers uses an Open-Zone map; Fable is described as fully open world; and Project Windless is described as an open-world action RPG. These labels indicate different projects and should not be treated as interchangeable map designs.
If arcade time pressure is the priority
None of the currently supported alternatives is confirmed to reproduce Crazy Taxi’s driving-and-deadline structure. Sonic Frontiers offers battles, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space levels instead. The most accurate expectation is that you can approximate the speed and movement feeling, not the exact arcade task.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
If driving is non-negotiable
Wait for more information about Crazy Taxi: World Tour. Sega has confirmed open-city driving, but the cited material does not name another currently available PS5 game that matches that loop closely enough to recommend as a direct stand-in. Buying Sonic Frontiers for driving would lead to the wrong expectation.
A practical plan for the wait
- Decide which element you want first. Write down whether it is driving, speed, open exploration or arcade pressure. This prevents the phrase “open-world” from hiding the actual reason you are interested.
- Use Sonic Frontiers as the immediate PS5 option. Select it when high-speed movement and open-area exploration matter more than vehicle control. Confirm the PS5 format if you are buying a physical copy.
- Keep the announced games in separate categories. Put Fable in an Autumn 2026 PS5 watchlist, keep Project Windless under upcoming open-world projects, and keep Crazy Taxi: World Tour under 2027 releases.
- Recheck official details before pre-ordering. Release timing, editions and gameplay descriptions can change. Look for a new Sega or platform-holder announcement rather than relying on a retailer headline that calls the game a remake or open world.
- Match your purchase format to your setup. For Sonic Frontiers, Sega lists a physical PS5 version. If you use a digital-only console, verify that a digital PS5 edition is offered before choosing a disc listing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling Crazy Taxi: World Tour an open-world game as a confirmed fact. The official announcement says “open-city driving.” Use that wording until Sega confirms a broader open-world structure.
- Calling it a remake. Sega says “brand-new entry.” That does not confirm a remake, remaster or sequel classification.
- Listing future projects as playable now. Fable is planned for Autumn 2026 and Project Windless is upcoming, so neither answers the immediate “what can I play today?” question.
- Expecting Sonic Frontiers to include taxi gameplay. Its documented features are high-speed movement, battles, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space levels.
- Assuming every open-world label means the same thing. “Open-Zone,” “fully open world” and “open-world action RPG” describe different official framings. They do not establish identical map layouts, mission structures or travel systems.
The short answer
Play Sonic Frontiers on PS5 if you want something available now that combines speed with large-area exploration. Track Fable for its planned Autumn 2026 PS5 launch and Project Windless as another upcoming open-world PS5 project, but do not count either as a current substitute. When Crazy Taxi: World Tour arrives in 2027, its confirmed identity will be high-speed, open-city driving in a brand-new series entry—not a formally confirmed open-world remake.
SEGA’s June 8, 2026 announcement summarizes the intended direction as: “Building on its signature high-speed action and open-city driving, this new installment delivers enhanced gameplay for an even more exhilarating experience.” That is the clearest guide for what to wait for and the standard against which temporary alternatives should be judged.
