In some open-world games, returning home is not just a trip back to a familiar map marker. A place can feel different because the world has changed, because the story has given it new meaning, because new information makes it unsettling, or because a hub fills out as you progress. These games show five distinct ways a return can reshape what “home” means.

How a familiar map can make a return feel new: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Tears of the Kingdom brings players back to Hyrule after Breath of the Wild, relying on remembered geography rather than replacing it with an entirely unfamiliar world. Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma said the team wanted players to be able to keep exploring after reaching the previous game’s ending. Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi explained that knowing Hyrule made new gameplay possible: players could orient themselves on familiar ground while discovering new ways to move through it.

That familiarity changes the feeling of exploration. Recognizing the land below can make a descent from the sky feel legible even as the route and possibilities are new. The shift comes chiefly from the game’s design and the player’s accumulated knowledge—not from a claim that every familiar location has undergone a major settlement or relationship change. Nintendo’s developer interview explains the intention behind returning to Hyrule.

When a base becomes a story about belonging: Red Dead Redemption 2

A home base can matter even when it is not a permanent house. A DiGRA scholarly paper reads the camp in Red Dead Redemption 2 as both a central place in the journey and a metaphorical storytelling device for a futile search for home in the Wild West. In this interpretation, the camp offers a pause and a possibility of safety or belonging, while the story’s movement through the wider world complicates that promise.

This is a scholarly reading of the game, not a developer’s stated intent or a claim that every player experiences the camp the same way. Its distinctive effect is interpretive: returning to a familiar base can feel different because the journey changes what that place represents. The DiGRA paper on home bases in games sets out that framework.

When a familiar house turns uncanny: Watch Dogs: Legion

Watch Dogs: Legion uses a different kind of return in its “Coming Home” mission. Ubisoft developer Omar Woodley describes a house that first seems plausible, then gives way to a recreation of a childhood home beneath it. The shift in setting, custom assets, lighting, and tone turns the idea of home from something recognizable into something strange.

Here, the place does not become a more useful or welcoming hub. Its familiarity is part of the setup for unease: the player’s understanding of the space changes as the mission reveals what is underneath. Woodley said the team wanted players to feel they had entered “a totally different world” and to pause and wonder what was happening. Ubisoft’s interview about the “Coming Home” mission describes how that reveal was designed.

When repeated hub visits accumulate new activities: High On Life 2

In an Xbox Wire report published September 10, 2025, developers described High On Life 2 as expanding the first game’s single hub into three larger hubs with side activities, NPCs, collectibles, and unlocks. Creative and Art Director Mikey Spano described a home base that players return to, with a hub leading into more linear missions. Completed missions bring new power-ups back into the hub, so returning can add activities or options rather than simply repeat a familiar route.

The developers also described trying to avoid making players sit through the same conversations after every mission, while leaving room for those who want to explore at their own pace. That is a reported design description, not independent hands-on verification of how the released game plays. Xbox Wire’s developer interview covers the hub structure and the team’s stated goals.

When player choices alter a settlement: Fable

Fable offers a more systemic version of home changing over time: a settlement can reflect the people who live there and the player’s actions toward them. In a June 10, 2026 Xbox Wire developer account, lead designer Dan Greer described a “Living Population” in which NPCs have traits, homes, jobs, and schedules. The account says player actions and reputation affect how people respond, and choices can change a settlement’s description and condition.

Greer’s examples include a settlement left empty for a time after its NPCs are killed, followed by gradual repopulation. In another example, a settlement’s trait changes to reflect a giant corpse and the tourists it attracts. These are descriptions of the announced game system from its developer, not independently verified gameplay. The change is both social and visible: the community, its reputation, and even its defining character can reflect what the player has done. See the Xbox Wire account of Fable’s population and settlement systems.

What kind of change makes “home” feel different?

Game What changes between visits What drives the change What the return can feel like
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom New gameplay possibilities on a familiar map Design built around geography players already know Recognition paired with renewed curiosity
Red Dead Redemption 2 The meaning of the camp as the journey progresses Narrative context and the player’s interpretation A temporary promise of safety or belonging, complicated by the search for home
Watch Dogs: Legion A plausible house is recontextualized as a strange recreation Story revelation and a shift in tone Estrangement and unease
High On Life 2 Hubs gain side activities, collectibles, unlocks, and power-ups Mission progression and accumulated content, as described by developers A home base that supports exploration between missions
Fable NPC responses, settlement population, and settlement traits Player choices and reputation, as described by the developer A community that can reflect the consequences of the player’s actions

These examples answer different versions of the same feeling. A map can be familiar but open up new play; a camp can gather emotional weight; a house can become disturbing; a hub can grow more rewarding to revisit; or a settlement can visibly bear the effects of player choice. The key distinction is whether the change is in the place itself, the people in it, the story attached to it, or the player’s understanding.
