These five open-source Windows apps—PowerToys, ShareX, Notepad++, AutoHotkey, and Rufus—do not have supported native Linux editions that reproduce their Windows workflows. That does not mean every Windows build is impossible to run on Linux: Wine, wrappers, and virtual machines may help with some apps, but compatibility is not the same as native support or feature parity.
Open source describes how software is licensed and developed; it does not guarantee support for every operating system. Here is what each app does, where the Linux gap matters, and what Linux users can consider instead.
Do these Windows apps work on Linux?
Not as supported native Linux applications with equivalent features. PowerToys, ShareX, and Notepad++ document Windows-focused projects; Rufus’s maintainer explicitly says there are no plans for a Linux port. For AutoHotkey, the available account describes its portability problem as tied to Windows input behavior, though that explanation is not independently confirmed by an official source here.
Some Windows apps can be attempted through Wine, a wrapper, or a virtual machine. Those routes can introduce interface quirks, plugin incompatibilities, or extra setup, and none guarantees the same integrations or behavior as a native Linux app. The compatibility options mentioned in coverage are not a tested compatibility matrix across distributions or versions.

Which app does what—and what is the Linux gap?
| App | Windows-focused role | Linux situation | Possible task-specific option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft PowerToys | A collection of Windows utilities, including FancyZones, Keyboard Manager, PowerToys Run, Text Extractor, PowerRename, and Color Picker. | Microsoft’s project repository lists Windows installation methods, including an executable, Microsoft Store, and WinGet; it does not establish a native Linux edition. | Linux desktop extensions or separate packages may cover individual jobs. Albert is one possible launcher alternative, not a PowerToys replacement. |
| ShareX | Screen capture and recording, plus uploading images, text, and other files to multiple destinations. | The official repository lists Windows-oriented download channels, including GitHub releases, Microsoft Store, and Steam. No native Linux edition is established here. | Flameshot can handle ordinary screen capture and markup, but that does not automatically reproduce ShareX’s destination-upload automation. |
| Notepad++ | A source-code editor and Notepad replacement that runs in the Windows environment. | The project describes Windows as its supported environment; no official native Linux port is established. | Kate is a Linux editor to consider. Its plugin ecosystem and behavior may not match a familiar Notepad++ setup. |
| AutoHotkey | Windows automation and macros for tasks such as remapping keys, text expansion, mouse actions, and custom interfaces. | The cited account says existing scripts cannot simply be moved to Linux because the tool depends on Windows input behavior. Official documentation confirming this explanation was not surfaced. | No direct Linux replacement is established here; choose a Linux automation tool only after checking that it supports the specific actions your scripts perform. |
| Rufus | Creating bootable drives from ISO and other disk images, including Windows and Linux images. | Maintainer Pete Batard’s FAQ answers “No” to plans for a Linux or macOS port and says Rufus was designed to work closely with Windows APIs. | Ventoy or Linux command-line disk utilities can serve related boot-media workflows, but they are alternatives, not Rufus ports. |
What to expect from each app on Linux
PowerToys: replace individual utilities, not the whole suite
PowerToys combines many small Windows conveniences. Its repository lists more than 30 utilities, so a Linux user looking for one feature—such as window tiling or a launcher—may find a desktop extension or separate application for that job. Those pieces should not be presented as a single, feature-matched PowerToys suite. Albert is a possible launcher to investigate if PowerToys Run is the feature you need.
Microsoft’s project repository is the clearest reference for the supported project and its Windows installation methods: Microsoft PowerToys on GitHub.

ShareX: capture is only part of its workflow

If those destination rules and upload steps are central to your routine, check an alternative’s integrations before treating basic screenshot support as equivalent.

Notepad++: Wine is not official Linux support
Notepad++ describes itself as a Windows application. Coverage of the app notes that some Linux users try Wine or snap wrappers, but compatibility layers and wrappers do not turn it into an officially supported Linux edition. Plugin behavior and interface details may differ. Kate is an option to consider if you need a Linux-native editor, but check whether it supports the extensions and habits your work depends on.
The project’s supported-systems information is in the Notepad++ repository.

AutoHotkey: plan to rebuild scripts, not just copy them
AutoHotkey scripts automate Windows tasks such as key remapping and text expansion. The available account attributes the portability challenge to operating-system input behavior and warns that scripts cannot simply be transferred to Linux. Because that technical explanation is not confirmed here by official AutoHotkey documentation, treat it as a reason to test your specific workflow rather than as a detailed compatibility specification. A Linux alternative must support the actual input events and actions your scripts use.

Rufus: Linux can create boot media without a Rufus port
Rufus supports creating bootable drives from images, including Linux images, but its maintainer says there are no plans to port it to Linux or macOS. In the Rufus FAQ, Pete Batard estimates that a Linux version with at least 75% of Rufus’s capabilities would take him at least four months of full-time work. That is the maintainer’s estimate, not a measured study or general project forecast.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a workaround or Linux alternative
- Identify the feature you actually use. For example, distinguish a basic screenshot from ShareX’s automated uploads, or a text editor from a specific Notepad++ plugin workflow.
- Look for a native Linux option for that task. Check whether it supports the integrations, file formats, plugins, or automation steps you rely on; a similar name or broad category is not proof of parity.
- Try a Windows compatibility route only if the native option falls short. Wine or a wrapper may be worth investigating for some applications, but availability does not promise reliable operation or support.
- Consider a virtual machine for a Windows-only workflow. A Linux guide updated September 24, 2026, describes VM approaches and WinBoat as a beta project requiring Docker or Podman. Its status and requirements can change, so consult the guide for its current details.
- Test before depending on the setup. Verify the exact app feature, device, plugin, or script you need; success with one function does not establish full compatibility.
Why “open source” does not mean “works on every OS”
Open-source licensing makes source code available under the project’s terms; it does not require maintainers to build, test, or support every operating system. These projects can rely on Windows-specific APIs, system integrations, or input behavior. A Linux alternative may solve the same problem in a different way, while a compatibility layer may run some Windows software without delivering a native Linux experience.
