Installing open-source applications and switching to a Linux desktop are different decisions. Open-source software can run on Windows or macOS. Linux is the operating-system platform itself, combining the Linux kernel with system libraries, hardware support, repositories, applications and a desktop environment. Moving to Linux therefore changes software installation, updates, driver and firmware handling, application compatibility, desktop workflow and the support path—not merely the names of the programs you use.

Open-source software and Linux answer different questions

Open-source describes how software is licensed and developed. In the GNU free-software framework, users should have access to source code and the legal freedom to run, study, modify and share the program. You can install such applications on a proprietary operating system without changing that operating system. A browser, office suite, media player or developer tool may be open source while running on Windows or macOS.

Linux describes an operating-system platform. A usable Linux desktop includes the Linux kernel, system libraries, device support, package repositories, applications and a desktop environment. Ubuntu describes its desktop as free to download, use, modify and share, but other distributions make different choices about defaults, release schedules and which proprietary components they provide. Switching to Linux changes the foundation underneath your applications.

That distinction prevents two common mistakes:

  • Installing open-source apps is a low-risk software change. Your existing drivers, file paths, system settings and commercial applications remain in place.
  • Replacing Windows or macOS with Linux is a platform migration. Every essential workflow must be checked against Linux hardware support, application availability and your preferred distribution.

Linux is a family of desktops, not one uniform product

A distribution selects a kernel version, system components, repositories, security policy, installer, release cadence and desktop environment. GNOME and KDE Plasma can present very different menus, settings panels and window behavior even when they run on the same underlying distribution.

Fully free GNU/Linux distributions exclude proprietary software, drivers and firmware. Mainstream Ubuntu, by contrast, may include or offer proprietary components when they improve practical compatibility. Neither approach is automatically right for every computer. A newer Wi-Fi adapter, graphics card or printer may work immediately with a distribution that permits proprietary firmware and fail on a strictly free distribution.

When evaluating a distribution, record the exact edition and release rather than saying simply “Linux.” Support instructions, package versions and hardware results can differ between releases. Your choice affects how often major upgrades arrive, which applications are packaged, how much configuration is graphical and where community or commercial support is available.

What changes after a Linux installation

Software installation and updates

Windows users commonly download an installer from each vendor; macOS users often use vendor downloads or the App Store. Linux applications may come from distribution repositories through a graphical software center or a package manager. You may also encounter Flatpak, Snap, AppImage and vendor-provided packages.

Central repositories can make security updates and application updates more consistent because the distribution tracks them together. The trade-off is distribution-specific packaging: a program may have a different version, plug-in location or permission model than the same program downloaded directly from a vendor. Sandboxed formats such as Flatpak and Snap can isolate applications, but they also introduce portals and permissions that you may need to approve.

Keep a record of how each important application was installed. Mixing repository packages, third-party repositories and vendor installers can complicate upgrades and troubleshooting. For routine maintenance, install updates through the distribution’s documented graphical tool or package manager and read any release notes for major version changes.

Drivers, firmware and device settings

Linux support is device-specific. A laptop may have working Wi-Fi but a nonfunctional fingerprint reader; a desktop may render graphics correctly but lack a vendor control panel for fan curves or RGB lighting. Test each device rather than assuming that a specification means compatibility.

Canonical says devices on its certified-hardware list are tested in dedicated hardware laboratories for reliability and performance. Certification is useful evidence, not a guarantee that every peripheral connected to the system will work. The Linux kernel FAQ gives the practical warning: “It is possible to use Linux without any non-free firmware binaries, but usually at the cost of rendering a lot of hardware inoperable.”

Pay particular attention to newer wireless chipsets, discrete graphics, webcams, docking stations and specialty peripherals. Firmware may be loaded by the operating system even though it is not part of the kernel itself. A distribution that offers the required firmware can be the difference between a working installation and a machine with no network connection.

Filesystem, permissions and system services

Linux uses a different filesystem layout and permission model from Windows. System files normally live outside your personal home directory, and administrative actions require elevated privileges. Applications may ask for access to removable media, cameras, microphones or specific directories. These controls can reduce accidental system changes, but they can also make a Windows-style “download and run” habit less appropriate.

Many fixes involve a graphical settings panel; others require a terminal command copied from distribution documentation. You do not need to become a command-line expert for ordinary browsing, writing or media playback, but learning how to identify your distribution, inspect network status and read a service error will shorten troubleshooting.

Applications are usually the decisive migration constraint

Create a list of must-have applications before choosing a distribution. For each one, verify not only whether it launches but whether it supports the files, plug-ins, fonts, macros, color management, hardware acceleration and collaboration features your work requires. A similarly named Linux application may open a document while changing layout, formulas or embedded media.

Application situation What to check Typical implication
Native Linux build Supported distribution and release, plug-ins, file compatibility and update channel Usually the simplest path; test the exact workflow rather than only launching the program
Web application Browser support, offline behavior, file upload limits, extensions, camera and microphone permissions Often works without a local install, but depends on connectivity and the service’s feature set
Open-source replacement Import/export fidelity, fonts, macros, color profiles and collaboration with existing users Can remove licensing dependence, but migration may require retraining and file conversion tests
Windows application through Wine Exact version, installers, copy protection, fonts, plug-ins, hardware integration and update behavior Results vary by application; a successful launch does not prove full functionality
Virtual machine Host RAM and CPU capacity, graphics acceleration, USB pass-through and Windows licensing Preserves a Windows environment for a bounded task while adding resource and maintenance overhead
No practical Linux path Whether the application is tied to a proprietary driver, kernel component, dongle or unsupported service Keep another computer or operating system, or postpone the switch

Do not overwrite your old installation until you have opened representative files, run exports, printed results and completed a real collaboration cycle. A design suite that appears compatible may fail only when a particular plug-in or color profile is used.

Games: Proton expands the catalog, but not universally

Valve’s Proton is a compatibility tool integrated with Steam Play that allows many Windows games to run on Linux. Ubuntu’s documentation distinguishes native Linux games from Windows games run through Proton and warns that unsupported titles vary in functionality.

Check every important game individually. Anti-cheat systems, digital-rights management, third-party launchers, virtual-reality runtimes and proprietary controller or keyboard software can prevent a title from working even when another game runs perfectly. Online games may change their compatibility after an update. Test multiplayer, saves, voice chat, controller mappings and required launchers—not just whether the main menu opens.

For a gaming-focused migration, keep a short list of games that are non-negotiable and decide in advance whether a second operating system is acceptable. Proton can reduce the number of exceptions, but it is not a promise of identical behavior or support from the game’s publisher.

Use a live USB before changing the disk

Ubuntu documents a live session that runs from removable media without making permanent changes. An 8GB-or-larger USB flash drive is recommended for creating the installer and live environment. The session is slower than an installed system, but it is the safest way to discover basic incompatibilities.

  1. Inventory the machine. Write down the exact laptop or motherboard model, graphics hardware, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chipsets, printer and scanner models, docks, displays, audio interfaces, cameras, fingerprint readers and specialty controls.
  2. List essential workflows. Include applications, games, file formats, browser profiles, password managers, encryption keys, VPN access, cloud drives and account-based services.
  3. Back up before experimenting. Copy documents and media to a separate destination. Export browser data where needed, preserve recovery keys and license records, and create recovery media for the existing operating system.
  4. Download the intended distribution. Verify that you selected the correct release and desktop edition. Create a bootable USB using the distribution’s documented method and an 8GB-or-larger drive.
  5. Boot the live environment. Select the option to try the system rather than install it. Avoid formatting or partitioning prompts during this evaluation.
  6. Test networking. Connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, reconnect after a reboot if possible, and confirm that VPN or enterprise authentication works when relevant.
  7. Test graphics and displays. Try hardware acceleration, the intended resolution and refresh rate, an external monitor, docking and suspend/resume. Check brightness and multi-monitor arrangement on a laptop.
  8. Test sound and cameras. Play audio through built-in speakers, headphones and a dock; record from the microphone; test the webcam in the applications you actually use.
  9. Test peripherals. Print and scan a real document, mount external storage, pair controllers and try fingerprint readers, smart-card devices or other specialist hardware.
  10. Test critical software. Use native builds or web applications in the live session where practical. For Windows-only programs, research the exact version’s Wine, virtual-machine or dual-boot path before installation.
  11. Record failures. Note the device model, error message, distribution release and whether a reboot changes the result. A reproducible problem is easier to solve than a vague “Linux does not work.”

Choose between replacement, dual boot and a virtual machine

Option Best when Costs and risks
Full replacement Your essential applications and hardware work in the live test, and you are ready to learn Linux administration Highest migration impact; a failed application or driver can require restoring a backup or another computer
Dual boot You need near-native performance for a Windows-only application or game while learning Linux gradually Requires partition planning, rebooting between systems, duplicate updates and a reliable shared-data strategy
Linux in a virtual machine You want to explore Linux while keeping the current system as the host Uses host memory and storage; 3D graphics, USB devices, battery life and suspend behavior may be limited
Separate Linux computer Your main machine has critical incompatibilities or you want a low-risk trial Adds hardware and maintenance cost but keeps the existing installation untouched

Dual boot is not automatically safer than a virtual machine. Partitioning errors can damage data, while a virtual machine may not expose the graphics or USB performance you need. Base the choice on the specific application or peripheral that remains unresolved and on how comfortable you are maintaining two environments.

Privacy and control: real advantages without automatic privacy

Open licensing gives users legal and technical freedoms to inspect and modify code. It does not make every component transparent or prevent data collection by an installed application or online service. A distribution can include proprietary firmware, a browser can connect to telemetry-enabled services, and a cloud application can process data remotely regardless of the host operating system.

Assess privacy at several layers:

  • Distribution policy: identify which repositories are enabled, whether proprietary drivers and firmware are offered, and how telemetry is configured.
  • Installed applications: review permissions, network access, background services and update sources for each program.
  • Online accounts: check what data a web service stores and whether its privacy settings are independent of Linux.
  • Firmware and hardware: recognize that closed firmware can remain part of an otherwise open system.
  • Your configuration: use full-disk encryption where appropriate, strong account authentication, timely updates and backups.

Linux can provide more inspectability and control than a tightly integrated proprietary platform, but “Linux is private” is too broad to be a useful guarantee. The exact distribution, applications and services determine the result.

Support, learning curve and ongoing maintenance

On a proprietary operating system, a device vendor or software publisher may provide one support path. On Linux, responsibility is divided among the distribution, kernel, desktop environment, package maintainer, hardware vendor and application developer. This can be empowering because problems are visible and configurable, but it can also make support less direct.

Before installing, identify the distribution’s documentation and community channels. Save the release number and hardware model with your notes. Learn the graphical locations for updates, users, storage, displays, printers and network settings. Also learn how to collect basic diagnostic information so that a support request includes the relevant logs rather than only a symptom.

Long-term maintenance includes applying security updates, checking that third-party repositories remain compatible after upgrades, reviewing backup jobs and periodically testing recovery. A rolling-release distribution may deliver newer components continuously; a fixed-release distribution may emphasize a more predictable support window. Choose the maintenance style that matches your tolerance for change.

A practical migration checklist

  • Confirm the exact distribution, desktop edition and release you intend to install.
  • Check certified hardware where available and investigate every uncertified device separately.
  • Classify each essential application as native, web, replaceable, Wine/Proton-compatible, virtual-machine-only or unavailable.
  • Open real documents and test plug-ins, fonts, macros, exports, printing and collaboration—not merely application startup.
  • Test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, graphics acceleration, suspend, external displays, audio, webcams, printers, scanners and docks in the live session.
  • Back up documents, browser profiles, encryption keys, recovery media and license information before changing partitions.
  • Decide how Windows-only games and applications will run and what happens if that method fails after an update.
  • Choose replacement, dual boot, a virtual machine or a separate computer based on unresolved requirements.
  • Keep a rollback plan until files, backups and essential workflows have been verified after installation.

What the available figures do—and do not—tell you

The Linux Foundation reported in 2025 that 83% of respondents considered open source valuable to their organization’s future and 46% reported increased business value from open source compared with 2024. Perforce OpenLogic reported that 56.73% of respondents selected Ubuntu in its 2025 open-source Linux distribution question. These are organizational or survey-population figures, not the percentage of consumer desktop computers running Linux.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No authoritative measurement establishes a single definitive global Linux desktop installed-base percentage in the evidence available here. Avoid using an unsupported market-share number to predict whether your own applications or peripherals will work. Your must-have software and hardware are more useful decision criteria than a generalized popularity claim.

Bottom line

Install open-source applications first if you want the benefits of open licensing without changing your operating system. Consider Linux when you also want control over the operating-system stack, package management and desktop environment and are willing to validate hardware and application compatibility. A live USB, a complete application and peripheral inventory, and a tested rollback plan turn the decision from a slogan into a measurable migration. The right outcome may be a full replacement, dual boot, a virtual machine or simply using open-source software on the system you already have.
