Short answer: Choose CESM for coupled atmosphere–ocean–land–ice studies, WRF for regional atmospheric modeling and downscaling, MITgcm for configurable ocean or atmosphere circulation experiments, and climt for readable Python-based teaching and rapid prototyping. None is universally best; the right choice follows your scientific domain, coupling needs, data, resolution, and available computing.
What an open-source climate model actually provides
Climate software is more than a numerical solver. A usable model combines governing equations, physical parameterizations, numerical grids, forcing data, configuration files, diagnostics, build tools, documentation, and a way to reproduce a run. “Open source” also describes different practical experiences: one project may provide a complete coupled Earth-system framework, while another gives modular components intended for notebooks or custom experiments.
Start with the question you need to answer. A global question about feedbacks among atmosphere, ocean, land, and ice requires a different architecture from a regional precipitation study or a classroom demonstration of radiative balance. The four projects below cover those distinct roles rather than competing as interchangeable packages.
At-a-glance comparison
| Tool | Scientific scope | Typical domain | Extensibility and learning path | Computing and operations | Teaching fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CESM | Coupled atmosphere, ocean, land, land-ice, and sea-ice Earth system | Past, present, and future climate states at multiple resolutions and component configurations | Component selection and configuration within a central coupler; official tutorial and reference documentation | Plan for a steeper setup and greater compute burden than a small Python model | Advanced graduate courses using a bounded tutorial experiment |
| WRF | Regional atmospheric dynamics and numerical weather prediction | Limited-area, regional weather and climate studies, including downscaling | Powerful but configuration-heavy; official downloads, documentation, publications, and support references | Requires careful domain, physics, forcing, and namelist preparation | Prepared case, domain, and namelist are preferable to an open-ended installation exercise |
| MITgcm | Atmosphere, ocean, and climate circulation | Realistic or idealized, component or coupled experiments | Configurable domain, algorithms, equations, forcing, and controls; tutorial experiments and source modification | Runs on a PC, workstation, or parallel computer | Reproducible tutorial first, followed by controlled changes to physics or forcing |
| climt | Composable Earth-system components and diagnostics | Python notebooks, radiation studies, column models, and rapid prototypes | Readable, modifiable Python interface aimed at researchers and educators | Lightweight entry point compared with full coupled systems; project initially focused on atmospheric components | Accessible demonstrations and experimentation within a course period |
CESM: the broad coupled Earth-system option
What it simulates
The Community Earth System Model (CESM) is a coupled climate model for simulating Earth’s climate system. Its architecture can run atmosphere, ocean, land, land-ice, and sea-ice components simultaneously through a central coupler. That arrangement lets a researcher study interactions rather than prescribing every component independently.

CESM supports multiple resolutions and component configurations. Consequently, it can be configured for questions about past climates, present conditions, or future states. The scientifically important choice is not simply “run CESM,” but select a component set, grid, forcing, and experiment design that match the question and the available resources.
When CESM is the right choice
- Earth-system feedbacks require atmosphere, ocean, land, and ice to exchange information during one simulation.
- The project examines paleoclimate, present-day variability, or future climate states.
- You need an established coupled framework rather than assembling separate components yourself.
Teaching with CESM
The CESM tutorial repository is the appropriate entry path for students. Use its introductory material and reference documentation to define one reproducible experiment before asking learners to alter settings. A class should focus on interpreting output, comparing a controlled configuration, or changing one scientifically motivated parameter. Expect a steeper setup and heavier compute burden than a small Python model; an advanced graduate course or a managed institutional environment is a more realistic setting than a first programming lesson.
WRF: practical regional atmospheric modeling
Scope and licensing
WRF, the Weather Research and Forecasting model, is designed for regional atmospheric dynamics, numerical weather prediction, downscaling, and limited-area climate studies. Its official repository describes the code as open source in the public domain and states that its use is unrestricted. The project also directs users to official downloads, documentation, publications, and support references.

A regional model can resolve atmospheric structure over a selected area without simulating the entire globe at the same level of detail. That makes WRF useful when the research question concerns local or regional weather, terrain effects, or translating coarser climate information into a regional analysis. The trade-off is that the model needs carefully prepared boundary and initial conditions, a defined domain, and configuration choices for physics and numerics.

Teaching WRF without overwhelming students
WRF is powerful but configuration-heavy. Do not make a class spend its limited contact time discovering compiler settings, domain definitions, and namelist syntax from scratch. Supply a prepared case, domain, and namelist, then ask students to inspect a baseline run and change one element at a time. A useful assignment might compare two physics choices, examine sensitivity to forcing, or diagnose why a regional result differs from its boundary data. Keep the experiment bounded so that students can complete a run, check logs, and interpret output within the course schedule.
MITgcm: configurable circulation experiments
Capabilities
The MIT General Circulation Model (MITgcm) is a numerical model designed for study of the atmosphere, ocean, and climate. Its documentation covers atmospheric and oceanic circulation, non-hydrostatic capability, and physical parameterizations. It can run on a personal computer, workstation, or parallel computer, allowing the same conceptual experiment to scale from a local tutorial to a larger research calculation.
Configuration and research uses
MITgcm exposes parameters for the computational domain, algorithms, equations, forcing, and simulation controls. That makes it suitable for idealized dynamics, ocean circulation, coupled or component experiments, research-methods courses, and work involving adjoints or data assimilation. Because the source and configuration are accessible, researchers can test a numerical method or physical process without treating the model as a sealed application.
A reliable learning sequence
- Obtain the current code through Git, following the project’s getting-started guidance.
- Build and run one documented tutorial experiment without changing its physics or forcing.
- Record the configuration and verify that your output reproduces the tutorial’s expected behavior.
- Change one parameter, equation option, or forcing field and compare diagnostics with the baseline.
- Only after that controlled exercise, design an independent experiment or move to parallel execution.
This sequence matters because MITgcm’s flexibility can hide mistakes: a run may complete while a sign, grid, boundary condition, or forcing choice makes the result scientifically meaningless.

climt: an accessible Python toolkit
What it is designed to do
climt is a Python toolkit for building Earth-system models and diagnostics. Its project description emphasizes two audiences: researchers who want to analyze or modify existing components, and educators who need an accessible entry point while retaining state-of-the-art components. A Python interface makes it natural to demonstrate a radiation calculation, build a column model, inspect state variables, or connect components in a notebook-driven workflow.
Where climt fits—and where it does not
Use climt when readability, rapid experimentation, and direct inspection of code are more important than operating a complete global coupled model. It is especially appropriate for notebooks, radiation demonstrations, column-model exercises, and prototyping a component before integrating it into a larger workflow.
The project description notes that climt initially contained atmospheric components and did not yet include a coupler. Therefore, it should not be presented as a full replacement for CESM or as a ready-made coupled Earth-system simulator. In a course, that boundary is useful: students can understand one process deeply before confronting the operational complexity of a coupled system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose by scientific question
If interactions among atmosphere, ocean, land, and ice are essential
Select CESM. Its central coupler and simultaneous component structure are intended for integrated Earth-system experiments. Budget time for configuration, documentation study, and substantial computing and storage planning.

If the problem is regional weather or climate
Select WRF. Define the limited-area domain, obtain appropriate initial and boundary forcing, and prepare a known-good namelist before experimenting with physics or resolution.
If circulation or numerical methods are the research subject
Select MITgcm. Its configurable equations, algorithms, forcing, and controls support idealized and realistic experiments, while tutorial cases provide a reproducible starting point.
If students need understandable code or you need a fast prototype
Select climt. A Python notebook can expose the relationship between state, forcing, diagnostics, and parameterization without requiring a full coupled-model build.

If you are unsure which model to start with
Write down four constraints before installing anything: the physical domain, whether components must be coupled, the observations or forcing data available, and the computer or cluster you can use. Add a fifth constraint for teaching: how long a student should wait for a run and how much setup you can support. A tool that is scientifically appropriate but operationally impossible for the assignment is not an appropriate teaching choice.

Can you run one on a workstation?
Yes, but “a climate model” is not one workload. MITgcm explicitly supports a PC, workstation, or parallel computer. climt is intended as an accessible Python toolkit. CESM’s coupled architecture and WRF’s regional workflows can demand considerably more preparation and compute than a small demonstration. The required resources depend on component selection, grid, simulation length, output frequency, and whether the run is serial or parallel.
Do not infer speed, memory consumption, or installation time from another project’s results. The available project material does not provide a fair cross-tool benchmark. Measure the exact configuration you intend to use, beginning with a short test run and reduced output. Monitor wall-clock time, peak memory, storage growth, and whether the model scales when you add parallel processes.
Installation and reproducibility workflow
- Start at the official project source. Use the project repository and documentation for the version you intend to run. For MITgcm, the getting-started guide recommends obtaining current code through Git; CESM provides a tutorial repository; WRF provides official downloads and support references.
- Pin the software state. Record a release, tag, or commit rather than relying on an unspecified “latest” checkout. This prevents a later code change from silently altering a study.
- Record the build environment. Save compiler versions, Python and package versions where applicable, operating-system details, and build options. These details are part of the experiment, not administrative notes.
- Preserve configuration. Keep CESM component settings, WRF namelists and domain definitions, MITgcm parameter files, or climt notebooks alongside the analysis code. Store forcing-data identifiers and preprocessing scripts as well.
- Run a smoke test. Use a short, inexpensive case to confirm that the executable starts, reads input, writes diagnostics, and stops cleanly before committing to a long simulation.
- Validate a known result. Reproduce an official tutorial or prepared case where one exists. Compare basic diagnostics, not just the fact that the program exited without an error.
- Archive outputs deliberately. Keep logs, configuration, provenance, and selected diagnostics. Large raw output may need separate storage, but the information required to reconstruct the run should remain available.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
- Choosing by reputation instead of domain: A coupled global model does not automatically answer a regional-atmosphere question. Map the research question to the model’s scope first.
- Starting with an unbounded classroom installation: WRF and CESM can consume an entire course period in setup. Distribute a tested environment and prepared case, then teach interpretation and controlled modification.
- Changing several settings at once: With MITgcm, WRF, or CESM, simultaneous changes make it impossible to identify the cause of a different result. Keep a baseline and vary one scientifically meaningful choice.
- Confusing completion with correctness: A successful process can still use an incorrect grid, forcing field, boundary condition, or unit. Check logs, dimensions, ranges, conservation or balance diagnostics where available, and physical plausibility.
- Ignoring reproducibility until publication: Unpinned code and undocumented compiler settings make a result difficult to repeat. Capture versions and configuration before the first production run.
- Expecting a benchmark that does not exist: Performance varies with configuration, compiler, hardware, and output volume. Run a small representative benchmark on the target system instead of quoting a generic speed claim.
A sensible progression for educators
- Begin with a process: Use climt for a notebook that exposes radiation, a column atmosphere, or a diagnostic calculation.
- Introduce circulation: Move to a documented MITgcm tutorial so students encounter grids, forcing, time stepping, and reproducible configuration.
- Add regional complexity: Use a prepared WRF case to teach domains, boundary conditions, parameterizations, and diagnostics.
- Teach system coupling: Use CESM tutorial material in an advanced course where students can reason about component exchanges and experiment design.
This is a pedagogical progression, not a ranking. An oceanography class may begin with MITgcm, while a regional-climate course may go directly to WRF. The useful sequence is the one that keeps the scientific concept visible while introducing operational complexity in manageable steps.
Bottom line
CESM is the strongest fit for integrated Earth-system research; WRF is the practical regional-atmosphere choice; MITgcm offers unusually configurable circulation experiments across local and parallel systems; and climt provides the most approachable Python entry point for teaching and prototyping. Select by domain and coupling requirements, then make the run reproducible with pinned code, recorded environments, preserved configuration, and a validated test case.
