The right open-source Android launcher depends on how you reach apps. Choose Lawnchair if you want a familiar home-screen grid with Pixel-style behavior and extensive theming. Choose Kvaesitso if you would rather type or search than organize icons. Choose Fossify if you want a conventional grid, widgets, folders, and a clearly stated launcher privacy policy.
There is no universal winner. These projects make different trade-offs in interaction design, integrations, distribution channels, Android support, and release maturity. The version and policy details below reflect listings and project pages reviewed on October 13, 2026; check the current build before installing.
Start with the interaction model
A launcher replaces the app that manages your home screen, app drawer, widgets, folders, and often gestures. That makes its interaction model more important than a long feature checklist.
- Grid-first: You open an app by tapping an icon, swiping through pages, or opening an app drawer. Lawnchair and Fossify follow this familiar pattern.
- Search-first: You invoke a global search and select a result, often without maintaining a carefully arranged grid. Kvaesitso is designed around this approach.
- Customization-led: You may care most about icon packs, gestures, labels, folders, widgets, colors, and wallpaper-derived themes. Lawnchair is the strongest fit when that breadth matters.
- Privacy-scoped: A launcher can limit its own network access, but it cannot change the data practices of apps you launch. Evaluate the launcher’s permissions and policy separately from the apps on your phone.
Decide which of these behaviors you want first. A launcher that has every setting you need can still feel wrong if its basic navigation conflicts with your habits.

The feature descriptions in the community comparison are secondary evidence rather than guarantees for every release. Treat release notes and the listing for your chosen build as authoritative for installation decisions.
Lawnchair: a familiar grid with deep theming
What it is
Lawnchair is a free, open-source Android home app based on Launcher3, the open-source foundation used by the Android launcher. Its project describes ports of Pixel Launcher features alongside additional customization. This gives it a conventional grid-and-drawer experience while leaving room to alter the visual system extensively.
Customization strengths
The repository highlights Material 3 Expressive theming that follows wallpaper and system colors. In practice, that makes Lawnchair a candidate for users who want the home screen to coordinate with the rest of the system rather than remain a fixed icon grid. A community-maintained comparison attributes search history, gestures, folders, widgets, icon packs, and Material You support to Lawnchair. Because those details can change between releases, verify each setting in the build you intend to use.

Who should choose it
- People moving from a stock or Pixel-style launcher who do not want to relearn app access.
- Users who consider icon packs, gestures, folders, widgets, and wallpaper-based color important.
- Anyone prepared to check the project’s release channel instead of assuming that a feature shown in a development build is in the stable package.
Trade-offs
Lawnchair’s breadth means more choices to configure and more reason to distinguish a stable release from a development branch. The project description does not establish a single minimum Android version or guarantee identical behavior across devices, so check the current release notes and package details before switching your default launcher.

Kvaesitso: a search-first workflow
How navigation works
Kvaesitso is built from scratch and intentionally follows its own concepts instead of recreating the AOSP launcher. Its defining behavior is global search. Rather than maintaining several pages of icons, you can search across on-device apps, contacts, and calendar events. Depending on the enabled integration, results can also come from services such as Wikipedia or a Nextcloud instance.
Why search can be faster
Search-first navigation reduces the amount of home-screen maintenance required when you install, remove, or rarely use apps. It can also make a large app collection easier to address by name. The trade-off is muscle memory: if you routinely reach for a fixed icon position, a text-based workflow may feel slower until search becomes habitual.
F-Droid versus feature-complete builds
F-Droid’s listing reports version 1.41.0-fdroid and recent changes including private-space setting support and exclusions for selected search results. The project states that its official F-Droid build removes features relying on non-free external APIs. Other project-described channels provide builds with those integrations. This is a distribution and integration choice, not proof that one channel is categorically more secure.

- People who prefer typing a name over arranging icons.
- Users who want one search surface for apps and selected personal or web information.
- Anyone willing to compare the exact build’s integrations before installing, especially when a feature depends on an external service.
Fossify Launcher: a simple grid with a specific privacy policy
Core features

Release and Android requirement
F-Droid lists version 1.10.0, added February 18, 2026, and requires Android 8.0 or newer. The listing marks the app as beta. Beta status does not by itself indicate a security problem, but it does mean you should test the launcher on your device before relying on it as your only home app.
Privacy claims and their scope
Fossify’s launcher privacy policy, effective July 12, 2026, states: “Fossify Launcher does not request Android’s Internet permission.” The policy also says the launcher contains no ads or tracking and does not send app data, usage records, or identifiers to Fossify or third parties for advertising, analytics, or tracking.
The launcher still processes information locally to display installed apps and apply home-screen settings. Android access is also needed for functions such as app visibility and widget binding. These statements describe the publisher’s policy; they are not an independent audit of the code. When you open another app from Fossify, that app’s own permissions and terms apply.
Who should choose it
- Users who want a conventional grid, folders, widgets, themes, and app hiding.
- People who value a plainly scoped, no-Internet-permission policy for the launcher itself.
- Those running Android 8.0 or later who are comfortable evaluating a beta release on their particular phone.
Privacy: compare permissions, not slogans
“Open source” describes how source code is licensed and made available; it does not automatically mean that two launchers have the same permissions, network behavior, or integrations. Evaluate privacy in three layers:

1. The launcher’s declared behavior
Read the current store listing and privacy policy for the exact package you will install. Fossify makes unusually specific statements about Internet permission, advertising, analytics, identifiers, and local processing. Those are useful boundaries, but they remain publisher claims rather than independent certification.
2. The distribution build
A build distributed through F-Droid can differ from one supplied through a project repository. Kvaesitso explicitly removes non-FOSS external-API features from its official F-Droid build. Fewer integrations may reduce external data flows, but you should judge the result against the functionality you need rather than treating the channel label as a universal privacy score.
3. The apps reached through the launcher
A launcher controls the home-screen experience; it does not sanitize the applications it opens. A calendar, social, cloud, or browser app can still communicate with its own services. Review those apps independently and do not describe a launcher as “the most private” without defining which behavior you measured.

- Android support: Fossify’s stated minimum for version 1.10.0 is Android 8.0. Requirements for the other launchers can change, so use their current release information.
- Release channel: Determine whether you are installing a stable, beta, preview, or development build. Lawnchair’s repository description of Lawnchair 16 is not, by itself, a promise that every feature is stable.
- Feature parity: Compare the F-Droid package with any project-described alternative when you need search integrations or other external-API features.
- Widget and gesture behavior: Test the widgets, swipe actions, notification dots, app hiding, and shortcuts you use daily. Android manufacturers can impose their own restrictions.
- Rollback plan: Keep your previous launcher installed until the new one works, and note the system path for changing the default home app.
A practical selection and setup process
- Write down your non-negotiable actions. Examples include opening apps from fixed icon positions, searching contacts, using calendar results, applying icon packs, hiding apps, or binding resizable widgets.
- Choose the interaction model. Pick Lawnchair or Fossify for a grid-centered routine; pick Kvaesitso if global search is the central action.
- Check the exact package and version. Confirm the distribution channel, Android minimum, beta or development status, and whether integrations are present in that build.
- Back up your existing arrangement. Record important folders, widgets, and shortcuts before changing the default launcher. A new launcher may not import every element from the old one.
- Install without removing the old launcher. Set the new app as default only after confirming that it opens and that the system can return to the previous choice.
- Recreate critical surfaces first. Add the clock, calendar, communication shortcuts, folders, and widgets you use most. Then test gestures, app hiding, search exclusions, and notification indicators.
- Audit permissions and integrations. Compare the installed package with its policy and listing. Disable optional services you do not need, especially external search integrations.
- Use it through a normal day. Check lock-screen return behavior, rotation, work or private spaces, widget updates, and battery-related restrictions on your device before committing to the switch.
Which launcher fits common priorities?
Most customization in a familiar layout
Lawnchair is the logical starting point. Its Launcher3 foundation, Pixel-oriented features, and Material 3 Expressive theming target users who want a conventional grid without giving up visual and gesture controls. Confirm that the particular release contains the customization features you expect.
Fastest path to an app or piece of information by typing
Kvaesitso is designed for this job. Its global search can span apps, contacts, calendar events, and selected services. Select the distribution build based on which integrations you actually need.
Simple grid plus an explicit launcher privacy policy
Fossify is the relevant candidate when folders, widgets, themes, and app hiding matter more than a novel navigation model. Its policy gives a clear scope for the launcher itself, while its beta label and Android 8.0 minimum call for device-specific testing.

Strongest evidence for a privacy conclusion
No source establishes a universal privacy ranking among these projects. Fossify provides the most detailed dated policy statement in the material available here, but that statement should be read as a declared practice, not an independent audit or a claim about every app launched from the home screen.

Available project and listing information does not provide controlled measurements of battery life, responsiveness, accessibility, crash frequency, setup difficulty, or compatibility with every device.
