Yes, open-source Android launchers can host widgets. They use Android’s standard AppWidget system, but the quality of the experience depends on the launcher, Android release, phone manufacturer, permissions, and user profile. Lawnchair follows Android’s Launcher3/Pixel-style model, while Kvaesitso is a search-focused launcher built from scratch.
For a reliable migration, test the launcher on your exact phone, install updates through the same channel that supplied the app, back up before development builds or restores, and select another Home app before uninstalling the current default launcher.
How widgets work in an open-source launcher
Android defines a standard AppWidget component and lifecycle. A launcher that implements the host side of that contract can display widgets from installed apps, regardless of whether the launcher itself is open source. Android’s normal workflow is to touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen, tap Widgets, choose an app, and drag a widget onto a Home screen. If the widget supports resizing, Android shows an outline with drag handles.
The standard does not make every launcher behave identically. The launcher controls grid dimensions, folders, page placement, resizing rules, permission prompts, profile visibility, and how it restores a widget after a backup. Phone vendors can also change Home-app behavior and background restrictions.

Lawnchair widget support
Lawnchair is an open-source Launcher3-based home app. Its current project description identifies Lawnchair 16 as based on Android 16 and lists support for the At a Glance widget, including Smartspacer integration, alongside other home-screen customization features. Standard widgets are added through Android’s usual Widgets picker.
Kvaesitso widget workflow
Kvaesitso uses a different, search-focused design rather than reproducing the Pixel-style Launcher3 layout. Its documentation describes a built-in Favorites widget. To add it, scroll to the end of the widget list, select Edit widgets, choose Add widget, and then select Favorites. This is an example of why a launcher may expose both Android’s app widgets and launcher-specific widgets.
Why a widget can disappear or change after switching launchers
A widget may be installed correctly yet look different, lose its configuration, or fail to appear after a launcher switch. Common causes are:

- The new launcher uses a different grid or does not support the same resize behavior.
- The widget belongs to a work or private profile that the launcher handles differently.
- The widget provider’s app has been disabled, removed, or restricted from running.
- A backup restored the position but not the provider’s stored data.
- The phone manufacturer applies different permissions or background limits to the new Home app.
Lawnchair’s backup documentation makes an important distinction: widget placement is saved, but widget data and internal settings are not. A restored layout can therefore contain an empty or reset widget that must be configured again. Third-party integrations also require their related apps to remain installed, and work-profile apps may not restore reliably because Android handles those profiles inconsistently.
Android-version compatibility: what is and is not guaranteed
There is no single Android version that every open-source launcher supports. Compatibility is a matrix involving the Android release, the phone maker’s Home-app implementation, the launcher build, required permissions, navigation features, and whether an item belongs to a personal, work, or private profile.

For Lawnchair, “Android 15–16 QuickSwitch support requires root” is a specific requirement, not a statement that every Lawnchair feature requires root. If you do not use QuickSwitch or do not have root, evaluate the launcher’s other features separately.

A practical compatibility check
- Record the phone model, Android version, security-update level, navigation mode, and whether the phone is rooted.
- Check the launcher’s current release notes or project page for that Android range and for known device or profile limitations.
- Install the stable build first when one is available. Treat development, nightly, or preview builds as testing software.
- Set up one or two representative widgets, a folder, and any work-profile shortcuts before migrating your complete layout.
- Test lock-and-unlock, rotation if you use it, gesture navigation, notification dots, search, and returning to the stock launcher.
- Only then recreate a heavily customized Home screen.
This process matters because a launcher can appear compatible while a particular vendor’s profile handling, gesture implementation, or widget host is not.

Lawnchair and Kvaesitso: choosing by workflow
Neither launcher is universally “more compatible.” They make different assumptions about how you use Android.

Choose based on interaction model first. A launcher that technically displays your widgets may still be a poor fit if its search, app-list, gesture, or profile behavior conflicts with how you work.

How to update an open-source launcher safely
Use the same trusted distribution channel that supplied the installed app. Mixing channels can create signature or version conflicts and makes it harder to know where a failure originated.
F-Droid installations
- Open F-Droid and refresh its repositories so it can see current metadata.
- Open the launcher’s package page and install the offered update.
- For Kvaesitso Nightly, enable the project’s Third Party F-Droid Repos source when its documentation directs you to do so, then refresh F-Droid again.
- After updating, check the Home app, widgets, profile categories, and any launcher permissions before deleting the previous backup.
F-Droid warns that an APK downloaded manually does not provide repository update notifications and is less secure than installing through the repository. If you originally installed from F-Droid, continuing through F-Droid gives you the expected update path.
Manually downloaded APKs
Manual installation can be appropriate when a project publishes a release before a repository catches up, but you must monitor the project yourself. Confirm that the APK is from the project’s genuine release channel, keep a copy of the currently working build, and do not assume Android will notify you about later versions.

Lawnchair development builds
Lawnchair documents development builds through Obtainium, GitHub, and nightly.link. These builds contain the latest features and bug fixes “at a cost of performance and additional issues,” so the project advises making a backup before installing. A development build is a testing choice, not automatically a safer or more stable update.

Back up before changing launchers, installing a development build, or resetting a phone. A backup is useful for recovering layout, but it is not a complete copy of every widget’s state.
What a Lawnchair backup can and cannot preserve
- Saved: widget placement and the launcher layout covered by its backup system.
- Not saved: widget data and internal widget settings.
- May be unreliable: work-profile apps, because Android’s handling of those apps varies.
- Still required: the related app for any third-party widget or integration.
After restoring, open each widget and complete its setup again. Re-authentication, account selection, calendar choice, or other provider-specific settings belong to the widget app, not to the launcher’s placement record.

- Capture screenshots of every Home-screen page, folder, and widget configuration.
- Export the launcher backup and keep it off the phone you are about to modify.
- List widgets that depend on work, private, or other managed profiles.
- Install and test the new launcher without removing the old one.
- Set the new launcher as Home, then verify personal and profile-specific apps.
- Re-add and configure widgets one at a time.
- Keep the old launcher and backup until the new setup survives a restart and a normal day of use.
How to uninstall a launcher set as the default Home app
Android normally requires another launcher to be selected before it will let you remove the current default. Lawnchair’s FAQ states: “Android doesn’t allow you to uninstall your default launcher. Head into your settings and set a different launcher as default first, after that you should be able to uninstall Lawnchair.”
- Open Android Settings.
- Go to the default-apps area. Depending on the manufacturer, it may be labeled Apps > Default apps, Choose default apps, or Home app.
- Select another installed launcher as the Home app and confirm.
- Return to the app-management screen, select the launcher you no longer want, and choose Uninstall.
- Press the Home button or gesture to confirm that the replacement launcher opens normally.
If the uninstall control remains unavailable, verify that the other launcher is actually selected as Home, that the app is not managed by a work administrator, and that you are looking at the app’s management page rather than merely removing its icon.
Remove is not the same as uninstall
Android Help distinguishes the two actions. Remove takes an app icon, shortcut, widget, or group off the Home screen. Uninstall removes the app from the device. If you only want to clear a widget or icon, use Remove; changing the default Home app and uninstalling is necessary only when you want to delete the launcher itself.

- No Widgets option: confirm you are editing the Home screen, not the app drawer, and check whether the launcher supports the standard AppWidget host.
- Widget is listed but blank: open the provider app, grant its requested permissions, and configure the widget again.
- Widgets vanished after restore: restore placement, then re-add or reconfigure each widget; widget data is not guaranteed to be included.
- Work apps missing: unlock or enable the work profile and test the profile separately; restoration is not guaranteed.
- No update appears: refresh the repository that supplied the app. A manually installed APK will not produce F-Droid update notifications.
- Cannot uninstall: select a different Home app first, then retry from Settings’ app-management screen.
