There is no single open-source replacement for an enterprise AI-agent security platform. The practical approach is to combine controls at the layer where an agent can cause harm: a runtime sandbox and egress policy, model and tool guardrails, build-time integrity for prompts and MCP components, and independent audit and human approval.

The strongest starting points in this shortlist are NVIDIA OpenShell for runtime containment, Meta LlamaFirewall for model-facing guardrails, the OWASP Agent Control Standard (ACS) as a portable control foundation, and Microsoft Agent Package Manager (APM) for build-time context supply-chain integrity. Microsoft’s Agent Framework safety guidance and FIDES provide additional application-level patterns. They cover different enforcement boundaries, so selecting one requires mapping every action path—shell, file tools, MCP servers and network requests—not simply counting features.

What an open-source alternative must actually secure

“Agent security platform” can describe several different jobs. A system that detects a jailbreak in text does not automatically stop a process from writing files. A package manager that verifies a prompt’s commit does not monitor what the agent does after it reads that prompt. Treating these as interchangeable creates a false sense of coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Three enforcement layers

  • Build-time integrity: verifies prompts, instructions, skills, hooks and MCP declarations before they enter an agent project. It addresses tampering, provenance and version drift.
  • Model and tool middleware: inspects prompts, model outputs, reasoning traces or generated code and can block or flag suspicious content. It operates around inference or tool dispatch.
  • Operating-system and runtime boundary: limits filesystem, process, credential and network access regardless of what the model says. It is the layer that contains a manipulated agent.

A defensible design can use all three. Runtime isolation is still required when an agent can execute code or reach sensitive data; a detector alone is not a containment boundary.

NVIDIA OpenShell OS/runtime Per-agent isolated sandbox, reduced privileges, limited filesystem reach, no direct network access, supervisor policy decisions, credential brokering, logging, policy-as-code and described formal policy verification. It is a runtime layer, not an agent framework. Surrounding identity, secret-management, observability and governance systems remain necessary. Capabilities are vendor-described and require validation. Containment and policy enforcement for agents and multi-agent workflows.
Meta LlamaFirewall Model and tool middleware PromptGuard 2 for jailbreak detection, AlignmentCheck for goal-hijacking or prompt-injection-induced misalignment auditing, and CodeShield for insecure or dangerous generated code. AlignmentCheck is described as experimental. The framework does not by itself prove OS isolation, filesystem restrictions or network-egress control. Detection and blocking signals around model behavior and generated code.
OWASP Agent Control Standard Portable middleware and runtime-control foundation Hooks for inspectability, traceability, instrumentation and portable safety-policy enforcement across agent frameworks. It is a standard/foundation, not an out-of-the-box platform. Framework adoption and implementation depth vary. Designing interoperable controls and avoiding framework lock-in.
Microsoft Agent Package Manager Build time Lockfiles, pinned commit SHAs, provenance and pre-deployment content-safety checks for agent dependencies. No runtime footprint; it does not sandbox MCP servers, perform malware analysis on dependency code or inspect behavior after context ingestion. Reproducible, reviewable agent-context supply chains.
Microsoft Agent Framework safety guidance and FIDES reference Application and tool-dispatch design Untrusted-content handling, indirect-prompt-injection defenses, output validation, sensitive-session-data protection, resource limits and deterministic label-based information-flow controls before sensitive tools. Guidance for applications using that framework, not evidence of a general enterprise security platform. Implementing authorization and data-flow checks inside an agent application.

No apples-to-apples independent benchmark establishes that one option is universally more effective. Treat published capabilities as claims to verify in a proof of concept, and check repository activity, license, supported runtimes and current implementation status before adoption.

NVIDIA OpenShell: the closest match for runtime containment

NVIDIA describes OpenShell as an open-source runtime below agent frameworks and harnesses. Its stated design gives each agent an isolated sandbox with reduced privileges, limited filesystem reach and no direct network access. A supervisor outside the sandbox evaluates network requests against policy, supplies credentials only when allowed and records allow or deny decisions. NVIDIA also describes policy-as-code and formal verification of policies against access boundaries.

This boundary matters because an agent can be manipulated after it has started. If a retrieved web page tells the model to run a destructive command or upload a secret, a detector may miss it; a correctly configured sandbox and egress policy can still prevent the action. OpenShell’s scope also includes credential brokering, inference routing, audit/state and controls for multi-agent workflows. NVIDIA’s FAQ states: “OpenShell is not another agent framework.” It is therefore best evaluated as infrastructure beneath the framework you already use.

How its control path is intended to work

  1. Start the agent inside the OpenShell sandbox rather than launching it with the host’s normal privileges.
  2. Declare the files, processes and destinations the task requires. Keep the default policy restrictive.
  3. Route outbound requests through the supervisor. The supervisor evaluates each request against policy instead of allowing direct socket access.
  4. Provide credentials through the broker only for approved destinations and operations; do not copy long-lived secrets into the agent’s environment.
  5. Send decision and activity records to your observability or security system and review denials as policy-tuning signals.

Verify which interfaces are actually mediated in your deployment. A sandbox that covers shell execution but leaves a file tool or MCP server outside the boundary does not contain the complete agent. Also confirm integration behavior with your identity provider, secret store and governance tooling; OpenShell is described as integrating with those systems, not replacing them.

Meta LlamaFirewall: guardrails around model behavior

Meta’s April 29, 2025 paper presents LlamaFirewall as an open-source, system-level security framework for LLM-powered applications. It describes three components:

  • PromptGuard 2: detects jailbreak attempts.
  • AlignmentCheck: audits reasoning for goal hijacking or misalignment induced by prompt injection. The paper explicitly labels this component experimental.
  • CodeShield: identifies insecure or dangerous code generated by the model.

These checks are useful before a tool call or code execution step, particularly when an application needs a risk signal to trigger blocking or human review. They do not, on their own, isolate the process, restrict operating-system permissions, broker credentials or constrain network egress. Pair LlamaFirewall with a runtime boundary when the agent can execute code, access files or communicate externally.

Questions to answer in a proof of concept

  • Which model families and agent frameworks are supported by the current repository, rather than only by the paper’s design?
  • Does a detected event block the action, return a score, or merely create a log entry?
  • What latency and failure behavior occur when the guardrail service is unavailable?
  • How are false positives handled for legitimate code, long prompts and tool-generated content?

OWASP Agent Control Standard: a portable control contract

The OWASP Agent Control Standard (ACS), dated September 1, 2026, frames agent trust around inspectability, traceability, instrumentation and runtime control. Its stated goal is to define middleware hooks through which platforms expose controls and safety policies can be enforced portably across agent frameworks. OWASP summarizes the requirement this way: “Agents must be inspectable, traceable and instrumentable—providing visibility into what they are, what they can access, what they did and why, and the ability to control their behavior at runtime.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ACS should be treated as a design and interoperability foundation, not as a turnkey service. Use it to specify the events and control points your application must expose: identity and session context, tool requests, policy decisions, resource access, outcomes and reasons for denials. Then determine which framework adapters or middleware actually implement those hooks. A claimed ACS-compatible component is not evidence that every framework or tool path is covered.

Microsoft Agent Package Manager: securing the context supply chain

Microsoft Agent Package Manager (APM) treats prompts, instructions, skills, hooks and MCP declarations as dependencies installed from version control into agent project directories. Its documented controls include lockfiles, pinned commit SHAs, provenance and pre-deployment content-safety checks. This makes the agent’s starting context reproducible and reviewable, much like a software dependency graph.

Where APM stops

APM has no runtime footprint. Microsoft explicitly states that it does not sandbox MCP servers at runtime, perform malware analysis on dependency code or inspect agent behavior after the agent has read its context. A pinned malicious package is still malicious; a trusted package can still receive a hostile tool response. Use APM alongside runtime isolation, egress controls and runtime auditing rather than as a platform replacement.

A practical APM release gate

  1. Require every prompt, skill, hook and MCP declaration to come from an approved source and commit SHA.
  2. Review the generated lockfile in code review, including provenance and requested permissions.
  3. Run pre-deployment content-safety checks and require an owner to approve changes.
  4. Deploy the resulting artifact into a sandbox with restricted credentials and network destinations.
  5. Re-run review whenever a declaration, startup command, version or reachable data source changes.

Agent Framework safety guidance and FIDES

Microsoft’s Agent Framework safety documentation assigns security responsibilities to both the framework and application developers. It treats user, assistant and tool content as untrusted; discusses indirect prompt injection, output validation, protection of sensitive session data and resource limits; and points to FIDES for deterministic, label-based information-flow control before sensitive tools run.

These practices are most useful at the authorization boundary. For example, a tool that exports customer records can require a data-flow label proving that the input is permitted for that destination, independent of the model’s explanation. Resource limits can cap time, tokens, file size or tool-call count so a runaway loop becomes a bounded incident. None of these application checks removes the need to isolate the process and control its network path.

Controls every deployment should implement

OWASP guidance provides a practical baseline. Apply it even when a project advertises a stronger feature set.

1. Start with deny-by-default policy

Put permissions in managed, reviewable configuration. Explicitly allow only the files, commands, tools, MCP servers and destinations required for the task. A permission prompt shown to a user is not a boundary: “Permission prompts are not a security boundary against a manipulated agent; isolation is.”

2. Isolate the execution environment

Use an OS sandbox, disposable virtual machine, development container or equivalent cloud isolation. Test the actual coverage. Confirm whether shell commands, language runtimes, file tools, browser automation and MCP servers all execute inside the boundary. Do not assume that restricting one interface restricts the others.

3. Restrict outbound egress

Allow only required domains, methods and ports. Route traffic through a policy enforcement point when possible, and block direct access to internal metadata services and unrelated private networks. Egress restriction limits exfiltration after a successful prompt injection.

4. Treat context and tools as untrusted

Web pages, issue trackers, logs, retrieved documents, MCP metadata and tool responses can contain instructions designed to hijack the agent. Re-review tool definitions when they change, not only when the code changes. Vet each MCP server’s maintainer, source, license, startup command, permissions and reachable data; pin versions and commits.

5. Broker credentials

Give the agent short-lived, least-privilege credentials through a broker where possible. Scope tokens to a destination and operation, and keep secrets out of prompts, logs and filesystem snapshots. Test revocation and expiry during an active run.

6. Keep humans in the loop for irreversible actions

Require an explicit decision before deploying, deleting, sending, spending or granting access. Show the exact command, arguments, target and expected effect—not just a generic “the agent wants permission” message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Log outside the agent’s control

Record tool calls, file writes, commands, network requests, policy decisions, identity and session context in a central system the agent cannot alter. Avoid recording secrets. Make sure denied actions are logged as well as successful ones so an investigation can reconstruct attempted behavior.

How to assemble a layered open-source design

  1. Inventory action paths. List every shell, file, browser, code-execution, MCP and network capability. For each, identify the process that executes it and the data it can reach.
  2. Choose the runtime boundary first. Put code execution and network access behind a sandbox and egress policy. If no suitable runtime project covers a path, remove or redesign that capability.
  3. Add model-facing checks. Insert jailbreak, prompt-injection, alignment and generated-code checks before high-impact tool calls. Define whether failures block, pause for review or produce an alert.
  4. Lock the context supply chain. Pin prompts, skills, hooks and MCP declarations, record provenance and review content before deployment.
  5. Define portable events and policies. Use ACS concepts to specify consistent hooks for identity, tool requests, decisions and outcomes across frameworks.
  6. Apply data-flow and output validation. Reject malformed or overbroad tool arguments, enforce labels before sensitive operations and cap resource consumption.
  7. Move audit records off-box. Stream immutable-enough records to a central service and test that a compromised agent cannot disable or rewrite them.
  8. Exercise recovery. Revoke credentials, terminate a run, rotate affected secrets, quarantine artifacts and restore a clean sandbox image. Document who can perform each action.

Evaluation checklist for a proof of concept

Question Evidence to request
What is enforced? A diagram and test showing build-time, middleware and runtime boundaries separately.
Is isolation complete? Observed behavior for shell, file tools, MCP servers, subprocesses and mounted volumes.
How is egress controlled? Allow/deny tests for approved domains, private addresses, redirects and DNS paths.
How are credentials handled? Brokered, short-lived tokens; no secrets in prompts, images or logs; revocation test.
Are policies portable? The same deny and approval rules exercised on each supported agent framework.
What is audited? Tool calls, arguments, file and network activity, identity, session, policy result and failure reason.
How are MCP and dependencies governed? Maintainer review, license, pinned versions, startup commands, permissions and reachable data.
What is explicitly excluded? Written limitations for malware scanning, runtime monitoring, unsupported frameworks and experimental components.
Can the team operate it? Installation requirements, upgrade path, incident response, ownership and current repository activity.

Common mistakes and recovery actions

Relying on approval dialogs

Symptom: users approve actions they cannot fully inspect, or an injected agent generates a plausible explanation. Fix: enforce the decision in an isolated runtime and display exact commands, arguments and destinations for consequential actions.

Assuming a shell sandbox covers MCP

Symptom: shell tests pass, but an MCP server can still read files or make network requests. Fix: trace the server’s process, mounts and sockets; place it inside the same boundary or deny the capability.

Pinning versions without reviewing content

Symptom: a dependency is reproducible but contains an unsafe instruction or permission. Fix: combine commit pinning and provenance with human review, content-safety checks and least privilege.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Logging only successful calls

Symptom: investigators cannot tell whether the agent attempted exfiltration or was blocked. Fix: centralize allow, deny, error and approval events with session and identity context.

Calling a detector a containment system

Symptom: jailbreak or code scanning is enabled, but the process still has broad filesystem or network access. Fix: add a runtime boundary and test behavior under manipulated prompts, malicious tool descriptions and hostile tool responses.

Deployment, maintenance and maturity checks

Open-source availability does not guarantee production readiness. Before standardizing a component, verify its license, supported operating systems and runtimes, installation method, release cadence, issue response, upgrade compatibility and integration requirements. For experimental features—such as the AlignmentCheck component described in Meta’s paper—define a fallback when the feature is unavailable or produces an uncertain result.

Re-test controls after every framework, model, MCP server, policy or base-image change. Maintain a catalog of approved tools and destinations, with owners and review dates. A previously safe tool can become risky when its description, startup command, transitive dependency or reachable data changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing the right combination

  • Need hard containment first? Start with a runtime layer such as OpenShell, then add central logging, identity integration and egress policy tests.
  • Need detection around prompts and generated code? Evaluate LlamaFirewall components as middleware, while retaining OS and network controls.
  • Need framework portability? Use ACS concepts to define common hooks and policy semantics, then verify actual adapters.
  • Need trustworthy agent packages? Use APM-style lockfiles, commit pinning and provenance, but deploy the result inside a sandbox.
  • Need sensitive-data authorization? Add deterministic labels, output validation and resource limits at tool dispatch, as described in Agent Framework safety guidance and the FIDES reference.

The right architecture is the one that covers every path by which the agent can act and leaves an independently verifiable record of what happened. No option in this shortlist should be treated as a universal substitute without that coverage analysis.
