For most teams, the strongest open-source choices are a self-hosted policy gateway, a Kubernetes control plane, or a local firewall and audit proxy. EdgeF-4 mcp-gateway is the clearest fit for a small centralized service with per-tool controls; Microsoft MCP Gateway suits Kubernetes estates that need lifecycle management and RBAC; Niraven mcp-gateway is aimed at local-first inspection, approvals and run evidence. The other projects are useful candidates, but their maintenance, transport coverage and security assurance require direct verification before high-risk production use.

Why an MCP protection layer matters

Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers can expose tools that read data, call APIs, execute workflows or change systems. The protocol does not make those actions safe by itself. A gateway or proxy can place identity, authorization, inspection, consent and evidence between an agent and one or more servers without requiring every server implementation to be rewritten.

The Cloud Security Alliance reported an estimated 200,000 vulnerable instances across a supply chain with more than 150 million package downloads in a 2026 note. The same note says an internet scan in July 2025 found at least 1,862 publicly accessible MCP instances responding to unauthenticated requests. These are dated estimates and scan results, not a measurement of every MCP deployment, but they show why an exposed server should be treated as an untrusted third party.

OWASP’s practical guidance says: “Prohibit Token Passthrough: Do not forward client tokens to downstream APIs; instead, use tokens explicitly issued to the MCP server or validated via ‘On-Behalf-Of’ flows.” It also recommends short-lived, narrowly scoped tokens and a dedicated policy or gateway layer for authentication, authorization, consent, tool filtering and audit logging.

What to compare before choosing a project

Feature lists are not equivalent to a tested security boundary. Evaluate each candidate against the controls your agents actually need.

Decision area Questions to answer Evidence to request
Identity and authorization Can the proxy identify a user or agent, validate OAuth/OIDC or JWT credentials, apply RBAC, and authorize individual tools and arguments? Documented flows, negative authorization tests, token validation behavior and examples of denied calls.
Inspection and safety Does it detect poisoned descriptions, schema changes, unsafe arguments, tainted data or attempted exfiltration? Are outputs redacted? Rules, baseline behavior, fail-closed tests and a record of what is inspected before and after a call.
Human control Are destructive operations held for approval? Can policies require consent for specific tools, users or argument patterns? Approval workflow, timeout behavior, queue ownership and tests showing what happens when an approver is unavailable.
Evidence and operations Are logs redacted, tamper-evident or signed? Are metrics, dashboards, SIEM or OTLP exports available? Log schema, retention controls, export examples and an incident-replay exercise.
Deployment fit Does it support local stdio, HTTP or SSE, standalone containers, Docker or Kubernetes, and your identity provider? Transport matrix, manifests, upgrade procedure and a tested rollback.
Maturity and compatibility Is the license clear, are releases active, are protocol versions supported, and do maintainers respond to security issues? Recent commits and releases, issue history, test results, security policy and protocol compatibility notes.

Best open-source alternatives

EdgeF-4 mcp-gateway: a compact centralized policy gateway

EdgeF-4 mcp-gateway is designed as a self-hosted control plane that understands MCP methods such as tools/list and tools/call. It is the most natural starting point for a team that wants one small service in front of several servers rather than a broad Kubernetes management platform.

  • Identity: API keys and OAuth2 bearer tokens are supported. The gateway can verify HS256 or RS256 JWTs locally.
  • Authorization: Per-client and per-role allow and deny patterns can be applied to tools, which is more precise than allowing an entire downstream server.
  • Abuse controls: Token-bucket rate limits and daily quotas constrain both bursts and aggregate usage.
  • Evidence: SQLite audit logs record calls with redacted arguments, giving an operator a local trail without storing every sensitive parameter in plain text.
  • Routing and operations: A single gateway can route to multiple MCP servers. The runtime uses only the Python standard library, reducing dependency and packaging overhead.

Its trade-off is scope. The documented feature set emphasizes identity, routing, per-tool policy, quotas and auditability; it does not establish that the gateway performs the deeper poisoning, taint or exfiltration analysis offered by some specialist projects. Run adversarial tests for malformed schemas, changed tool descriptions, unsafe arguments and sensitive outputs before treating it as a complete inspection layer.

MacBook screen cleaner, monitor cleaner or screen cleaner spray for electronic devices with microfiber cleaning cloth
  • Platform functions: Request routing, server lifecycle operations, telemetry, access control, RBAC and a tool-gateway router are part of the project description.
  • Identity integration: The repository documents bearer-token and RBAC controls. In cloud mode it documents Entra ID and MSAL integration.
  • Management: Management-portal integration is intended for teams already operating a Kubernetes control plane and centralized observability.

Compatibility needs special attention. The current repository notes a breaking requirement for clients and adapters using MCP version 2026-07-28. Before rollout, confirm the protocol version used by every agent, adapter and server, then test discovery, tool invocation, authentication failures and upgrades in a staging cluster. A Kubernetes gateway can simplify fleet operations, but it also introduces cluster-level dependencies, identity configuration and a larger upgrade surface than a local proxy.

Niraven mcp-gateway: local-first firewall and run reporter

Niraven mcp-gateway is positioned as an MIT-licensed, local-first firewall and reporting tool. Its documented workflow scans configuration and then starts a live proxy, making it suitable for developer workstations, controlled agent runners and teams that want security checks close to the process using MCP.

  • Inspection: Tool-poisoning checks, shell, path and XSS input validation, descriptor hash baselines and drift detection are documented.
  • Policy enforcement: Per-tool and global rate limits can be combined with approval gates for destructive patterns.
  • Evidence: Redacted JSONL audit logs, dashboards and Markdown or JSON run reports support investigation and sharing with an operations team.

The project labels SSE and HTTP transport support, CVE integration and some other capabilities as roadmap items. Do not infer that a roadmap item is available in the version you deploy. Confirm the exact release, transport behavior and test coverage, and decide how the proxy behaves when a check cannot parse a request. For high-risk actions, require fail-closed behavior rather than silently forwarding an unknown call.

Because the available public description is an announcement rather than a complete operational record, treat current maintenance, repository activity, licensing, protocol support and deployment instructions as verification items. A proof of concept should include authentication failure tests, tool-level denial tests, logging redaction checks and an upgrade exercise before the gateway becomes a primary control.

Other projects worth investigating

The MCP Security Project catalog lists several narrower or earlier-stage projects. They can be valuable building blocks, but the catalog itself should not be treated as proof of production readiness.

Project Documented focus Questions to verify
mcpproxy Tool filtering, held-call approvals, session budgets, rug-pull detection, multi-plane authentication, audit, Prometheus and OTLP. Which transports and identity providers are supported in the release you will run, and how are held calls resumed after a restart?
mcp-audit Signed JSONL or SQLite evidence, redaction, policy, rate limits, dashboards, Prometheus and OTLP. How are signing keys protected, rotated and recovered, and can an incident responder verify records offline?
MCP Hangar Schema pinning, RBAC, approvals and SIEM or OTLP export. How are schema updates approved, and what happens when a server’s descriptor changes unexpectedly?
MCP Visor Fail-closed argument rules, redaction, taint tracking and exfiltration-chain detection. What argument language is supported, what are the false-positive controls, and are outputs inspected as well as inputs?
Deconvolute CEL policies and descriptor hashes. Can policies express the exact identity, tool and argument combinations required by your workflows?
MCP Zero Trust Layer A project listed for zero-trust enforcement around MCP. Confirm release activity, transport coverage, policy semantics and independent security review.
PortcullisMCP OIDC and mTLS identity with argument-bound approval tokens. Test token binding, replay resistance, approval expiry and behavior during identity-provider outages.

Several catalog entries are marked early-stage. For any of them, inspect the source, run the test suite, review open security issues and perform a controlled deployment before placing sensitive credentials or write-capable tools behind the project.

That positioning can be useful when the immediate requirement is to put an identity boundary around existing servers. Validate implementation depth directly: supported transports, per-tool and argument authorization, log redaction, approval behavior, outage handling, container hardening and maintenance. A container example demonstrates deployment shape, not the completeness of the security model.

How the alternatives differ in practice

Use case Most relevant candidate Why Main qualification
Small self-hosted service with centralized per-tool policy EdgeF-4 mcp-gateway API-key and OAuth2 identity, local JWT validation, role and client patterns, quotas, multi-server routing and SQLite audit. Deeper poisoning, taint and exfiltration analysis is not established by the documented feature list.
Kubernetes fleet with lifecycle and platform integration Microsoft MCP Gateway Reverse proxy, server operations, telemetry, RBAC, routing and management integration. Check the MCP 2026-07-28 client and adapter requirement before adoption.
Developer workstation or local agent runner Niraven mcp-gateway Local firewall model, descriptor baselines, poisoning checks, approval gates and run reports. SSE/HTTP, CVE integration and other items are identified as roadmap work.
Researching specialized controls Catalog projects such as mcpproxy, MCP Visor or PortcullisMCP Potentially focused controls for approvals, taint, exfiltration, signed evidence or argument-bound consent. Several are early-stage; verify maintenance, tests and operational behavior.
Adding a basic identity boundary without server changes MCP Zero-Trust Proxy Authentication, access control and audit are the stated purpose, with a container deployment pattern. Implementation depth and transport support must be checked directly.

A safe evaluation and rollout procedure

  1. Inventory every MCP endpoint. Record server owners, transports, protocol versions, tools, data accessed, write or destructive effects, credentials and network exposure. Include development machines and temporary tunnels.
  2. Classify tools by impact. Separate read-only retrieval from actions that send messages, change records, execute code, move money or alter infrastructure. Start with the smallest set of tools required by each agent.
  3. Place the gateway in a non-production path. Route a test agent through the proxy while retaining a direct path for recovery. Use synthetic accounts and data; do not begin with production secrets.
  4. Configure identity without token passthrough. Issue credentials for the MCP server or use a validated On-Behalf-Of flow. Make tokens short-lived and narrowly scoped. Verify that a downstream API never receives an unrelated client token.
  5. Write default-deny policies. Allow specific client or agent identities to call named tools. Add argument constraints for destinations, paths, record identifiers and quantities where the gateway supports them.
  6. Add human approval to high-impact calls. Hold destructive patterns, require an identified approver, expire requests and record the policy decision. Test what happens when the queue is unavailable; fail closed for sensitive operations.
  7. Baseline descriptors and schemas. Capture approved tool names, descriptions and schemas. Alert or block when a server changes a descriptor unexpectedly, then review legitimate upgrades through change control.
  8. Test hostile and malformed traffic. Exercise poisoned descriptions, unknown tools, oversized arguments, shell metacharacters, path traversal, XSS payloads, replayed tokens, expired credentials and attempts to place secrets in outputs.
  9. Verify evidence. Ensure logs contain identity, server, tool, decision, timestamp, approval state and outcome while redacting arguments and secrets. Export a sample to the intended SIEM or telemetry system and test incident reconstruction.
  10. Measure operational behavior. Observe latency, rate-limit responses, quota exhaustion, server restarts, gateway restarts and identity-provider outages. Document rollback and recovery before enabling write-capable tools.
  11. Expand gradually. Move one low-risk workflow to enforced mode, review denied calls and false positives, then add higher-impact tools only after the controls and evidence meet your acceptance criteria.

Common failure modes and fixes

Authentication exists, but every authenticated identity can call every tool

Authentication proves who connected; it does not establish what that identity may do. Add per-client or per-role tool policies and test a valid identity against a deliberately forbidden tool. If argument-level rules are unavailable, isolate the tool behind a narrower server or separate gateway policy.

Logs create a second data-leak channel

Raw arguments and outputs can contain credentials, personal data or proprietary prompts. Enable redaction, limit retention, restrict log readers and test nested JSON, error messages and approval comments. Signed records are useful only if signing keys and access to the evidence store are protected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A descriptor changes without an obvious software release

Tool descriptions and schemas influence agent behavior. Use descriptor hashes or schema pinning where available, alert on drift and require an explicit review for changes. Do not automatically accept a new description merely because the server remains reachable.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Rate limits stop bursts but not expensive sessions

A token bucket controls request frequency; it does not necessarily cap a long-running session or total spend. Combine per-tool and global limits with daily quotas or session budgets, and alert on unusual call chains.

The gateway becomes a single point of failure

Document whether the proxy fails open or closed, then choose deliberately for each tool class. Keep a tested recovery path, but do not leave an unmonitored direct route that bypasses policy. For Kubernetes deployments, test rolling upgrades and identity-provider outages; for local proxies, test process restarts and corrupted local state.

Protocol or transport assumptions break an otherwise sound deployment

Confirm MCP versions and transports end to end. The Microsoft project has a stated breaking requirement for MCP 2026-07-28 clients and adapters, while Niraven identifies SSE and HTTP support as roadmap work. A gateway that works for stdio may not protect an HTTP or SSE deployment without additional adapters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Licensing, maintenance and security review

Open-source availability does not guarantee a permissive license, prompt patches or a completed security review. Record the license and dependency obligations for the exact commit or release you deploy. Review release cadence, open issues, maintainer responses, vulnerability disclosure instructions, test coverage and upgrade notes.

Separate three statements in your approval record: what the documentation says the project can do, what your own tests demonstrated, and what remains unverified. This prevents a README feature list from becoming an unsupported production-readiness claim.

Which option should you choose?

  • Choose EdgeF-4 mcp-gateway when you need a relatively small, self-hosted service with OAuth2 or API-key identity, local JWT checks, per-tool rules, quotas, routing and a simple audit store.
  • Choose Microsoft MCP Gateway when your operating model is Kubernetes-first and you need server lifecycle management, RBAC, telemetry and platform integration. Resolve the MCP 2026-07-28 compatibility requirement before committing.
  • Choose Niraven mcp-gateway when local inspection, descriptor drift detection, approval gates and run reports matter more than a broad cluster control plane. Treat roadmap integrations as unavailable until the deployed release proves otherwise.
  • Investigate Lasso MCP Gateway as an additional proxy and orchestration candidate, but verify current maintenance and licensing beyond its April 15, 2025 announcement.
  • Investigate the catalog projects when you need a specialized control such as signed evidence, taint tracking, exfiltration detection or argument-bound approval tokens. Require stronger validation for entries marked early-stage.
  • Use MCP Zero-Trust Proxy for a basic boundary only after confirming that its implementation covers your transports, authorization granularity, logging and failure behavior.

No single project documented here proves every control an enterprise may need. A practical architecture may combine a gateway for identity and routing, a local inspection proxy for developer workflows, and centralized telemetry for evidence. Keep the policy model consistent, avoid duplicated token handling and test the complete chain rather than each component in isolation.
