Open-source projects are taking different routes into AI-powered office software, from suites built around an AI agent to products that let users connect an AI provider. That makes them worth watching as alternatives to Microsoft Office—but it does not show that they have displaced it. The available product statements describe features and intentions, not independent tests of privacy, file compatibility, or market adoption.
What “going after Microsoft Office” means
Here, “going after” describes competition for office-suite users, not proven replacement at scale. The projects differ in how central AI is to the product: GenOffice presents AI as a core feature, Collabora describes AI as optional and off by default, and ONLYOFFICE offers a way to connect an AI provider. LibreOffice takes a different position: its Document Foundation announced version 26.8 on August 26, 2026, and said the release contains no generative AI features.
Those differences matter more than the shared label “open source.” A user seeking AI assistance inside a document editor has a different requirement from someone who wants a conventional office suite without built-in generative AI.

These descriptions do not establish that one suite’s AI is more capable or safer than another’s. They explain the product approaches each project or company says it offers.

Can they handle Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files?
There is evidence of Microsoft-format support, but not enough here to promise perfect fidelity for every file. Collabora’s 2025 desktop launch announcement says its desktop product supports Microsoft OOXML formats and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The announcement also says it uses LibreOffice core technology. ONLYOFFICE describes Microsoft-format compatibility on its desktop product page.
GenOffice’s repository says it can edit DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files. This identifies supported formats; it does not establish how complex documents will render or behave after editing. None of these source descriptions supplies controlled, comparative testing of fidelity across intricate layouts, formulas, macros, animations, or other Microsoft-specific features.

If a particular file is business-critical, test a copy in the target suite and check the result in the application your recipients use. Pay particular attention to formatting, formulas, comments, tracked changes, embedded objects, and any workflows that rely on Microsoft-specific functionality.
Where AI processing happens—and what remains uncertain
AI integration can change where document content is processed. GenOffice’s repository says only AI calls leave the machine and describes user-selected providers, including local model servers. That is the project’s stated data-handling position, not an independently verified privacy assessment. A provider-connected setup also means the provider and configuration matter; the available product descriptions do not establish the data-handling terms for every provider.

Collabora describes its integrated AI as optional and disabled by default. That tells users how the feature is presented, but by itself does not specify data flows when it is enabled. The cited ONLYOFFICE page establishes provider connection as an option, not the privacy terms for every possible connection.
Before using AI with confidential material, identify the configured provider, check its applicable data-handling terms, and confirm whether the feature is enabled. Do not treat “open source,” “local,” or “optional” as a blanket guarantee about every component or configuration.

Which option fits which kind of user?
- You want AI built into the office workflow: GenOffice is the clearest example in these sources of a suite presenting an AI agent as a central feature. Verify its behavior and provider configuration with non-sensitive files before relying on it.
- You want an AI option that is off by default: Collabora Office’s 26.04 announcement describes optional integrated AI disabled by default.
- You want to connect an AI provider to a desktop suite: ONLYOFFICE’s product page describes that option. Check the provider’s terms and the resulting data flow for your setup.
- You want an open-source suite without generative AI features in the cited release: LibreOffice 26.8 is the relevant case; the Foundation’s release announcement explicitly says it contains no generative AI features.
- You depend on complex Microsoft Office files or features: Treat format-support claims as a reason to evaluate a suite, not as proof that every file or workflow will transfer cleanly.
What this competition does—and does not—show
These projects show that open-source office software is exploring several ways to incorporate, connect, or deliberately omit generative AI. They do not establish that open-source suites are replacing Microsoft Office: the cited sources provide no attributable adoption or market-share statistic, and no independent comparative evaluation of these products.

Compare the AI behavior you need, the provider and data handling involved, the platforms you use, and how well your real files work. The official feature descriptions are useful starting points, but they are not substitutes for testing the documents and collaboration workflows your work actually depends on.
