There is no universal winner. Traditional RAN is usually the safer first choice for a dense brownfield network that needs a fast, predictable rollout through an established supplier and operations model. Open RAN is compelling for greenfield or expansion deployments where supplier diversity, programmable automation and software-led innovation justify the integration work. For many carriers, a staged hybrid—traditional RAN in proven macro layers and Open RAN in selected new or small-cell zones—offers the most practical balance.
The decision should be made from measured performance, five-year total cost of ownership (TCO), transport and cloud readiness, security capability and supplier strategy, not from a claim that one architecture is always cheaper or faster.
What traditional RAN and Open RAN actually mean
Traditional RAN: an integrated stack
Traditional radio access networks package the radio unit, baseband processing and software as a tightly integrated system, normally supplied and supported by one vendor. The historical model used a common public radio interface inside a largely proprietary, vertically integrated product. Integration boundaries are limited because the supplier controls the interfaces, software releases and much of the performance tuning.
This model has a long operational track record. A carrier can reuse established network-management procedures, field skills, acceptance criteria and vendor support contracts. The trade-off is dependence on one supplier for hardware road maps, software features, replacement parts and often the pace at which new capabilities become available.

Open RAN: disaggregated functions and open interfaces
Open RAN separates functions that were traditionally bundled. Radio units, distributed units (DUs), centralized units (CUs), commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers and software can come from different suppliers when they meet the applicable O-RAN specifications and pass interoperability testing. Open, standardized interfaces connect those components.
The architecture also introduces software-defined control and management elements. The Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) layer coordinates lifecycle and policy functions, while RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs) provide control and optimization functions through software. Disaggregation creates more choice, but it also makes the carrier responsible for proving that the complete system behaves correctly across suppliers and releases.
Hybrid RAN is a valid architecture, not a compromise by default
A hybrid network keeps traditional RAN where it is operationally efficient while adding Open RAN in greenfield sites, expansion zones or targeted small-cell programs. The radio layer, transport design, spectrum and operating model can differ by deployment zone. A hybrid plan is often the least disruptive way to gain Open RAN experience without putting nationwide coverage or established service levels at risk.
Decision summary: where each architecture fits
| Decision factor | Traditional RAN | Open RAN |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier model | Integrated stack from one primary supplier | Multiple suppliers connected through open interfaces |
| Integration effort | Fewer integration boundaries; established vendor responsibility | Conformance, interoperability and lifecycle testing across components |
| Best initial context | Dense brownfield estate, urgent rollout and a strong incumbent support model | Greenfield or expansion zones, selected small cells and supplier-diversity programs |
| Operational profile | Maps more directly to existing NOC processes and skills | Requires cloud-native operations, observability, automation and cross-vendor troubleshooting |
| Strategic strength | Predictable integration and mature operations | Vendor choice, supply-chain diversity and programmable innovation |
| Primary risk | Long-term supplier lock-in | System complexity and responsibility for end-to-end integration |
Is Open RAN cheaper than traditional RAN?
Not as a universal rule. A credible comparison must include the entire life cycle rather than the radio purchase price.
Build the TCO model around the whole system
For each architecture, model the same traffic and coverage target over the same period. Include:
- Radios, antennas and site equipment.
- DU and CU servers, hardware acceleration and software licenses.
- Transport capacity, synchronization and associated equipment.
- Site acquisition, power, cooling and physical maintenance.
- Cloud or edge-compute capacity where virtualized functions are used.
- System integration, interoperability labs and acceptance testing.
- Field support, spares, software upgrades and release management.
- Training, new engineering roles and ongoing observability tooling.
- Energy consumption under the carrier’s actual traffic profile.
Open RAN may lower some component or supplier costs while adding integration, testing and operational costs. Traditional RAN may have higher dependence on a single supplier but lower internal integration overhead. A five-year model should show both recurring and one-time costs, with assumptions for traffic growth, software releases and site changes.
What the published evidence says
GSMA’s 5G-era Mobile Network Cost Evolution analysis states that virtualised RAN infrastructure can deliver substantial like-for-like savings against traditional distributed RAN infrastructure. That finding concerns virtualisation and a like-for-like infrastructure comparison; it does not guarantee that every multi-vendor Open RAN deployment will cost less.

In its 2024 analysis, GSMA also reported that many operators expected Open RAN deployment costs might not differ significantly from traditional solutions. The potential value, according to that analysis, could instead come from supply-chain diversity and product innovation. These findings point to a scenario-specific business case rather than a standard discount.
When savings are most plausible
Savings are more credible when the carrier already operates the cloud, transport and automation capabilities that Open RAN needs; can reuse COTS capacity efficiently; and has enough scale to amortize integration and testing. They are less certain when the carrier must build those capabilities from scratch, run several parallel stacks or maintain extensive custom integration.
Performance and maturity: what must be proven
Traditional RAN has the longer operating record
Traditional platforms have accumulated years of field tuning, mobility optimization, timing validation and troubleshooting practice. That maturity reduces uncertainty for a carrier under strict coverage or launch deadlines. It does not remove the need for capacity planning, software qualification or security testing.
Open RAN performance is improving, but validation is mandatory
Open RAN performance depends on the exact radio, DU, CU, acceleration technology, transport design and software releases selected. Require both laboratory and field evidence for the intended deployment, including:
- Every target spectrum band and carrier aggregation combination.
- Massive MIMO throughput, beam management and power behavior.
- Mobility, handovers and edge-of-cell performance.
- Timing and synchronization under normal and degraded transport conditions.
- Realistic subscriber mixes, traffic bursts and concurrent sessions.
- Failure recovery, software upgrades and rollback behavior.
Do not treat a successful interface demonstration as proof of commercial performance. The acceptance baseline should compare the candidate Open RAN system with the carrier’s existing service-level targets at equivalent sites and traffic loads.
What operator sentiment indicates
| Mobile World Live industry survey (2024) | Share of respondents |
|---|---|
| Open RAN performed as expected | 53% |
| Open RAN performed worse than expected | 35% |
| Open RAN performed better than expected | 12% |
| Technology flexibility selected as a perceived benefit | 56% |
| Cost and energy savings selected as a perceived benefit | 35% |
| Speed of deployment selected as a perceived benefit | 8% |
The survey shows mixed confidence. Flexibility is recognized more often than immediate cost, energy or deployment-speed benefits, so a carrier should fund a proof program with measurable gates rather than assume that marketing claims will translate directly to field results.
Interoperability and the risks of a multi-vendor RAN
Open interfaces do not eliminate integration work
Interoperability requires more than connecting compliant ports. The carrier and its integration partners must test protocol behavior, timing, performance under load, fault handling, software upgrades and the interactions among releases. A component can conform to a specification and still expose a defect or performance limitation when combined with another supplier’s implementation.

Lifecycle governance is equally important. Every proposed hardware or software change should be assessed for interface compatibility, capacity impact, security implications and rollback options. Maintain a version matrix that records which radio, DU, CU, SMO and RIC releases have been tested together.

Typical multi-vendor failure modes
- A handover or mobility problem that appears only at a particular band combination or software release.
- Timing degradation caused by transport behavior rather than by the radio or DU alone.
- Performance loss when a general-purpose server reaches a CPU, accelerator or memory limit.
- Faults that cross organizational boundaries, leaving each supplier’s support team with only part of the evidence.
- An upgrade that passes component tests but changes behavior in the end-to-end service.
Reduce these risks with a neutral interoperability laboratory, shared telemetry, clearly assigned end-to-end ownership and acceptance tests that reproduce live traffic and failure conditions.
Deployment speed and migration choices
Why traditional RAN can launch faster in a brownfield network
When the incumbent stack already covers the target area, a traditional expansion can reuse existing transport, synchronization, site procedures, NOC workflows and support contracts. The carrier avoids creating a second integration domain while meeting a tight coverage deadline.
Why Open RAN can accelerate later change
After the initial integration is complete, software-defined functions and multi-vendor options can make it easier to introduce features or change components without replacing the entire stack. That benefit arrives only after the carrier has built release-management, testing and automation capabilities.
Three migration patterns
- Traditional-first: extend the proven stack for urgent coverage and use a separate lab or limited field zone to develop Open RAN capability.
- Open RAN-first: use Open RAN in a greenfield or expansion area where spectrum, transport and site economics are favorable, with explicit rollback criteria.
- Staged hybrid: retain traditional RAN in hard-to-change macro layers while introducing Open RAN in selected sites, small cells or new bands.
A carrier should choose the pattern that matches its service commitments and organizational readiness, not the pattern that sounds most disruptive.
Operations, skills and accountability
Capabilities Open RAN adds
Open RAN shifts part of the carrier’s work from a single product supplier to an end-to-end systems role. Teams need cloud-native operations, infrastructure automation, observability, software release management and the ability to correlate radio, transport, compute and application telemetry. Engineers must be able to isolate whether a fault originates in a radio, an interface, a workload scheduler, a server accelerator or a transport path.
What traditional operations can reuse
Traditional RAN generally fits existing NOC escalation paths, field-maintenance procedures and vendor support agreements. That reuse is valuable when staffing or training budgets are constrained. It should still be balanced against the risk that internal teams become dependent on one supplier’s tools and expertise.

Define end-to-end ownership before launch
Contracts should state who owns service restoration when several components are involved, who supplies the shared telemetry, how evidence is exchanged and how a release is rolled back. Without those rules, a multi-vendor fault can consume more time than the architecture’s theoretical flexibility saves.
Security and resiliency considerations
Open RAN exposes more interfaces and introduces more software and component suppliers. That expands the number of elements that must be authenticated, patched, monitored and coordinated. Traditional RAN still requires rigorous security; a simpler integration boundary does not make it inherently safe.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Controls to apply in either architecture
- Use defense in depth and zero-trust access controls for management, orchestration and transport paths.
- Authenticate every interface and restrict privileges to the minimum required function.
- Require signed software, protected key management and verified update procedures.
- Continuously test component combinations, upgrade paths and failure recovery.
- Segment management traffic from user and control traffic, and monitor for unexpected behavior.
- Maintain an inventory of software versions, dependencies, suppliers and support status.
Open RAN security should be assessed at the system level. A secure individual component does not guarantee a secure chain of interfaces, orchestration policies and operating practices.
Energy and sustainability: measure the site, not the slogan
Energy results depend on workload placement, hardware acceleration, sleep modes, cooling, transport and traffic patterns. A virtualized or disaggregated design can improve utilization in some deployments, while general-purpose processing and additional equipment can offset that benefit in others.
Run a controlled comparison using measured power at representative sites and traffic levels. Record radio power, server and accelerator consumption, cooling overhead, transport equipment and the effect of sleep or capacity-management features. Separate peak power from average daily energy so that a short laboratory result is not presented as a network-wide annual saving.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Supply-chain resilience and strategic control
Open RAN can reduce dependence on a single supplier and give the carrier more options when a component reaches end of life or a geopolitical constraint affects availability. It also gives the carrier more responsibility for compatibility, security updates, spare planning and long-term lifecycle governance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTraditional RAN simplifies procurement and support through a primary supplier, but concentration can limit negotiating leverage and make a supplier’s roadmap strategically important. Include that lock-in exposure in the business case even when the initial traditional deployment is cheaper or faster.

Carrier playbooks by deployment context
Choose traditional RAN first when:
- The estate is dense and brownfield, with a tight rollout deadline.
- Existing sites, transport and NOC processes are optimized for the incumbent stack.
- The carrier has limited cloud-native and systems-integration capability.
- Coverage reliability and rapid fault resolution outweigh near-term supplier diversification.
Before committing long term, document software portability, exit costs, feature-delivery commitments and the practical ability to introduce another supplier later.
Choose Open RAN first when:
- The deployment is greenfield or an expansion zone with few legacy constraints.
- Supplier diversity and programmable automation are strategic priorities.
- The carrier can fund an interoperability lab, cloud and transport upgrades, security engineering and new operational skills.
- Target bands, Massive MIMO, mobility and timing can be validated before commercial launch.
Start with a bounded scope, publish acceptance thresholds and keep a rollback path to protect service commitments.
Use a staged hybrid when:
- Immediate coverage and reliability are non-negotiable.
- The carrier wants Open RAN capability but cannot change every macro site at once.
- Some sites have favorable transport, spectrum and power economics while others do not.
- The organization needs time to train staff and establish multi-vendor governance.
A practical decision process
- Map the deployment context. Classify sites as dense brownfield, greenfield, expansion, rural or small-cell, and record spectrum, transport, synchronization and power constraints.
- Set service baselines. Define coverage, throughput, latency, mobility, availability, recovery and energy targets using the existing network or approved design as the reference.
- Define the supplier strategy. Decide whether flexibility, bargaining leverage or supply-chain diversity justifies the added integration responsibility.
- Build a full-life TCO model. Include radios, servers, licenses, transport, sites, energy, cloud, integration, support, updates and staff for the same traffic and coverage outcome.
- Assess organizational readiness. Measure cloud operations, automation, observability, security, lab capacity and cross-vendor troubleshooting skills.
- Run interoperability and field trials. Test target bands, Massive MIMO, mobility, timing, traffic profiles, upgrades, failure recovery and degraded transport before approving a rollout.
- Gate the rollout. Require objective pass/fail thresholds, named end-to-end ownership and a tested rollback procedure for each stage.
- Review the architecture periodically. Revisit cost, performance, energy, supplier health and operational workload as traffic and software releases change.
Questions carriers should answer before signing off
Is Open RAN ready for nationwide deployment?
There is no blanket yes or no. The 2024 industry survey shows that 53% of respondents found performance as expected, 35% found it worse and 12% better. That spread indicates that readiness varies by product combination, spectrum, transport, operating model and deployment conditions. Nationwide adoption should follow successful validation in the carrier’s own representative sites, not a generic maturity label.
Recommended Free Tools
Can Open RAN match the performance of an incumbent integrated platform?
It can only be established through like-for-like testing. Require evidence for the exact radio, DU, CU, accelerator, transport and software versions that will serve customers. Compare mobility, Massive MIMO, timing, traffic and failure recovery against the carrier’s existing targets. A standards-compliant interface alone is not a performance guarantee.
Should migration be gradual or begin with a greenfield network?
Use a greenfield or expansion zone when the carrier can isolate integration risk and has the skills to operate the new stack. Use gradual hybrid migration when the network must preserve existing coverage and the organization is still building cloud, automation and multi-vendor capabilities. Keep traditional RAN in layers that are expensive or risky to change until the Open RAN system has demonstrated the required service levels.
Final recommendation
Choose traditional RAN when mature integration, predictable operations and rapid brownfield rollout are the dominant requirements. Choose Open RAN when supplier choice, supply-chain resilience and programmable innovation are worth the cost of integration, testing and new operational capabilities. For most carriers evaluating both today, a staged hybrid with explicit lab and field gates is the most defensible path: it protects current service while creating evidence for where Open RAN delivers measurable strategic value.
