A September 2026 ZoomEye query set reported 44,897 results for raw printing on port 9100, 314 for IPP on port 631, and 299 for SNMP on port 161. Those are indexed query results—not a verified count of unique printers, a measure of vulnerable devices, or evidence of compromise. The figures point to a visible internet-facing print-service layer, but the underlying article’s query construction and counting method could not be independently examined.
What the reported numbers mean
World Programming Systems attributed the counts below to a ZoomEye query set collected on 22 September 2026:
| Query | Reported results | What it refers to |
|---|---|---|
port:9100 |
44,897 | Raw printing, commonly associated with JetDirect |
port:631 |
314 | Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) |
port:161 |
299 | Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) |
World Programming Systems reported the figures as search results, not a census. The article page’s query syntax, scan window, deduplication approach, geographic scope, and definition of a “result” were not available for independent inspection. A result therefore does not establish that it represents a unique physical printer, that the service is vulnerable, or that anyone accessed it.

The much larger port 9100 result count is a striking contrast with the IPP and SNMP counts, but it does not show that raw printing is more common among all printers, or that any particular proportion is misconfigured. Search indexes and their coverage change over time.

Why ports 9100 and 631 are different
IPP on port 631
IPP is an application-level printing protocol. RFC 2910 specifies port 631 as the default for an ipp URL and describes TLS and client-authentication support. The standard recommends that IPP printers support TLS for server authentication and operation privacy.
RFC 8011 defines an IPP Printer as a network entity that accepts IPP operations; that entity can be built into a printer or hosted by a print server. IPP support alone does not establish whether a particular service allows anonymous use or encrypts traffic. Authentication and transport security are separate properties that depend on implementation and configuration.

Raw printing on port 9100
Port 9100 is a separate raw-printing path, not another name for IPP. Epson’s security guidebook classifies RAW printing on port 9100 (or a custom port) as unencrypted and warns that third parties could read printed data. It also warns that unencrypted IPP may expose print or scanned data, while IPPS encrypts communication. Device behavior depends on its implementation and settings.

SNMP on port 161
The reported SNMP count is another indication of a service appearing in the query results, not proof that an exposed printer can be managed without authorization. The available figures do not identify device models, SNMP versions, access controls, or what information a responding service disclosed.

When public printer exposure is a security concern
An internet-visible listener is a reason to investigate, not a complete risk assessment. The relevant questions are whether the service needs to be reachable from the public internet, whether users and devices are authenticated, whether traffic is protected, what operations the service permits, and what data the printer handles. The printer’s firmware and connections to other parts of the organization’s network also matter.
RFC 8011 cautions that printing across different security domains calls for strong security measures, including printer authentication and protection against unauthorized use. An unencrypted path can put print jobs or scanned material at risk in transit; a reachable service may also permit unwanted use if its controls are weak. None of that can be inferred from a port count alone.

How to check and reduce exposure
CISA’s guidance on internet-exposed assets recommends identifying what is reachable, deciding what genuinely needs exposure, removing or restricting unnecessary access, and mitigating the rest. For a printer or print server, use an authorized review that combines external visibility with your own network and device configuration records.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Inventory reachable assets. Identify public IP addresses, printers, print servers, and the firewall or NAT rules that expose them. CISA names services such as Shodan, Censys, Thingful, and Shadowserver as possible sources of visibility; it says that listing tools is not government endorsement. Confirm any finding against systems you own or are authorized to assess.
- Decide whether public access is necessary. For each exposed print service, record its business purpose and intended users. If there is no documented need for direct internet access, remove the public path or restrict it at the firewall.
- Provide remote printing through a controlled route. When printing outside the local network is required, consider a VPN or jump host rather than exposing the printer itself. CISA identifies secure, monitored access as a mitigation; the appropriate design depends on the organization’s network and users.
- Harden the device and service. Disable unused protocols, keep supported firmware current, and review available authentication, TLS/IPPS, and job-release controls. Settings vary by model. For covered LaserJet Enterprise and PageWide Enterprise devices, HP’s guidance includes disabling 9100 printing.
- Verify the change and monitor what remains. Recheck firewall and device settings, confirm that only intended networks and users can print, and monitor traffic to any service that must remain available.
Do not assume that disabling one print port secures the whole device. Management interfaces, SNMP, web services, and other services may remain reachable, and disabling a protocol can affect workflows. Epson’s guidebook documents different consequences when services are disabled, so check device dependencies before changing settings.

Choosing a safer way to print remotely
Compare the actual designs your organization can support, rather than treating one protocol or appliance as a universal fix. IPPS can encrypt the printing path when the device and clients support it and it is correctly configured; a VPN or jump-host approach can keep the printer off the public internet while limiting access. Evaluate each option against these operational questions:
- Is the printer itself reachable from the public internet?
- Are traffic encrypted and endpoints authenticated?
- Can access be limited to named users and authorized networks?
- Will the method work with the organization’s printer models and client devices?
- Can administrators monitor and audit use?
- What ongoing work is required to maintain access controls, firmware, and connectivity?
The cited guidance does not establish comparative performance or cost for these approaches. The right choice depends on device support and the organization’s access, monitoring, and maintenance requirements.
