Open ports 111 and 2049 are clues that RPC or NFS-related services may be reachable from the internet—not proof that an NFS share is public, mountable, or vulnerable. Port 2049 is NFS’s registered port; port 111 is commonly used by rpcbind, which helps RPC clients locate services. The pattern depends on configuration, so neither port alone identifies the NFS version or security of a system. There is no defensible, dated Internet-wide count of exposed endpoints established by the sources cited here.

What do ports 111 and 2049 indicate?

RPC (Remote Procedure Call) lets a client request a service from another system. In traditional RPC setups, rpcbind helps clients find which network endpoint provides a particular RPC program. NFS (Network File System) uses RPC to provide remote file access.

Port Common association What an internet-visible listener can suggest What it does not establish
111 rpcbind / RPC binding service An RPC-related service may be answering on the scanned transport. That NFS is running, that a particular export is available, or that data can be read.
2049 NFS’s registered port An NFS service may be reachable. RFC 7530 says NFSv2 and NFSv3 historically used this port and recommends it as the default. The NFS version, the presence of accessible exports, or the strength of access controls.

Port 2049 can allow clients to reach NFS without using the RPC binding protocols, which means an NFS service can be reachable on 2049 even when 111 is not exposed. Conversely, seeing 111 does not by itself confirm that NFS is available. Port patterns are not a reliable way to infer a host’s NFS version or complete configuration. RFC 7530 describes protocol standards and recommendations, not the behavior of every deployed system.

Does an open NFS port mean the server is dangerous?

No. An open port is an observation that a network probe received a response; it is not proof that an unauthenticated user can mount a share or access files. A listener might be restricted to trusted networks, require authentication, or have no export available to the probing address. A scan result can also reflect a service other than the one presumed from the port number.

To determine the actual risk, establish what service answered, which NFS version and security flavor are in use, which exports are reachable from the internet, and what client and network restrictions apply. Confirm these details from the system configuration and a controlled test from an appropriate external vantage point. A port scan alone cannot answer whether information is exposed.

What does NFS version tell you about security?

Version matters, but it is not a verdict. RFC 7530 specifies that NFSv4 implementations must support RPCSEC_GSS and Kerberos V5 for interoperability. Those mechanisms provide stronger security options, but protocol support does not show that an organization has enabled or correctly configured them. The RFC also notes that NFSv4 security strength depends on the Kerberos V5 infrastructure in use. Check the configured security flavor and the deployment’s authentication and authorization controls rather than assuming a version number guarantees a secure setup. RFC 7530

How many NFS servers are exposed online?

A defensible total is not established by the sources available for this article. The RFC explains protocol behavior; it is not a census. A count without a dated scan population and a clear validation method could confuse responsive ports with confirmed NFS services or count the same system more than once.

  • When and where: scan date or observation window, address-space scope, geography, and exclusions.
  • What was tested: port 111 or 2049, TCP or UDP, and how filtering or rate limits affected observations.
  • What was counted: unique IP addresses, responsive listeners, protocol-validated NFS services, or confirmed accessible exports. These are different measures.
  • How results were checked: service-identification method, validation procedure, deduplication approach, and handling of false positives, dynamic addresses, and incomplete scans.

When comparing two scan results, use the same transport, ports, address scope, observation window, and validation criteria. A change in scan method or coverage can look like a change in exposure even when the underlying systems have not changed.

How should an organization reduce exposure?

Start by confirming that public access is necessary. For an NFS service used only by staff or systems on private networks, remove its public route rather than relying on obscurity or an unusual port. Where external access is genuinely required, constrain it to approved sources or private connectivity and verify the controls from outside the network.

  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  1. Inventory reachable assets. Identify internet-facing systems and verify which ones actually run RPC or NFS. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance, published June 4, 2025, recommends discovering exposed assets and repeating assessments routinely. Asset-discovery platforms can help with visibility, but a listing or scan result is not an authoritative census or confirmation of an accessible NFS export.
  2. Decide what must remain reachable. Record the business need and intended clients for each service. Remove public reachability when it is not required; otherwise, limit network access with appropriate access-control lists and segmentation.
  3. Harden what remains exposed. Disable unused services, maintain current patches, replace unsupported software or devices, and use monitored jump-host access where appropriate. CISA’s enhanced visibility and hardening guidance recommends default-deny access controls, segmentation, disabling unnecessary services, and protecting required exposed services with ACLs and current patches.
  4. Recheck from the internet. Scan known internet-facing infrastructure on a regular schedule and after network or firewall changes. Confirm that only intended services and sources are reachable. The #StopRansomware Guide, from CISA, MS-ISAC, NSA, and FBI, also advises disabling unused applications and protocols, performing regular vulnerability scans, and applying software updates promptly.

Exposure reduction is a cycle: inventory, decide, mitigate, and reassess. CISA’s guidance also recommends measures such as changing default passwords, monitoring network ingress and egress, and enabling MFA where possible; apply these according to the asset and access path rather than treating them as a substitute for restricting unnecessary NFS reachability.

How should an operator interpret a scan result?

  • Only 2049 responds: Treat it as a possible reachable NFS service and validate it. The absence of a response on 111 does not rule out NFS, because registered port 2049 can avoid RPC binding protocols.
  • Only 111 responds: Investigate the RPC service and determine whether it reveals or supports access to other RPC services. Do not label it a confirmed public NFS share without validation.
  • Both respond: This increases the reason to investigate RPC/NFS exposure, but still does not prove an export is mountable or public.
  • Neither responds: This only describes the scan vantage point and time. Filtering, routing, transport differences, or temporary service state can affect visibility; it does not prove the host has no NFS service on a private network.
