Use Open Graph as your site-wide baseline, then add twitter:card whenever you care about the card layout shown on X. Every page should expose the four Open Graph properties required by the protocol—og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Add og:description for the share summary, and include site, locale, image-dimension, and image-alt fields when they improve the preview. On X, choose summary_large_image for a large-image card or summary for a compact card. X-specific title, description, and image fields are optional when the Open Graph values are suitable, but they are useful when X needs different copy or artwork.
Open Graph and Twitter Cards solve different parts of the same problem
When someone pastes a page link into a social network, the platform fetches metadata from the page and builds a preview. Without deliberate metadata, the platform may select an unsuitable title, an arbitrary image, or no image at all. The result can be a truncated headline, the wrong branding, or a preview that does not explain the link.
Open Graph (OG) is the general-purpose metadata layer used by many social consumers. The Open Graph Protocol defines four required properties for every page: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Its specification is available at ogp.me.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Twitter Card tags (now displayed by X) add a platform-specific control that Open Graph does not provide: the card format. The twitter:card value tells X whether to render a large-image treatment or a compact summary card. In practice, the most maintainable setup is one shared Open Graph set plus a small number of X tags only where they add control.

The practical answer: which tags should you implement?
| Situation | What to publish | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Any indexable page shared on social networks | og:title, og:type, og:image, og:url |
These are the protocol’s required properties and provide a dependable shared baseline. |
| You want descriptive text under the headline | Add og:description |
The description is optional in the protocol but supplies a useful share summary. |
| You care about the layout on X | Add twitter:card with summary_large_image or summary |
Open Graph does not express which X card format to use. |
| X needs different wording or artwork | Add the matching twitter:title, twitter:description, or twitter:image |
These fields override the shared values for X when the presentation needs to diverge. |
| The same image and copy work everywhere | Keep the Open Graph fields and add only twitter:card |
Implementation guidance documents X fallback to the corresponding Open Graph values when X-specific fields are absent; fewer duplicated values mean less maintenance. |
Open Graph: the required baseline
The four required properties
The protocol’s required set is explicit:
og:title— the title associated with the shared page.og:type— the kind of object, such aswebsitefor a normal site page.og:image— the image URL to use in the preview.og:url— the page’s canonical URL for sharing.
Use the page’s canonical, absolute URL in og:url, not a tracking URL, session URL, or a different version of the page. If several URLs can reach the same content, selecting one canonical value helps consumers associate the preview with the right page.
The useful optional properties
og:description is optional but normally worth adding. It gives a social preview a concise explanation instead of relying on a platform to extract arbitrary body text. og:site_name can identify the publication or product separately from the page title. Locale metadata can describe the page’s language and regional setting when your site serves multiple locales.
The protocol also defines optional audio and video properties. Use those only when the page genuinely has a corresponding media asset and the consuming platform supports it; they are not substitutes for the required four properties.

For an image, the protocol supports og:image:url, og:image:secure_url, og:image:type, og:image:width, og:image:height, and og:image:alt. The alternative text should describe what the shared image conveys, so a person who cannot see the image still gets meaningful context. Supply dimensions and MIME type when your publishing system knows them; they can help a consumer process the asset before downloading it.
If you publish more than one og:image, the first value is preferred when a consumer has to resolve a conflict. Put the image you want most platforms to choose first, and make the ordering deterministic in your template.
Twitter Card tags: the X-specific layer
twitter:card is the essential X tag
Add this tag when the card format matters:
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
summary_large_image requests a prominent image treatment. summary requests a more compact card. Open Graph can identify an image, but it cannot select between these X layouts, so twitter:card remains useful even when every other value is shared.

Implementation guidance for X describes fallback to og:title, og:description, and og:image when the corresponding twitter: fields are absent. Treat that as implementation guidance, not a permanent guarantee for every future X renderer. The card selector is the exception you should not omit when a specific layout is required.
Open Graph versus Twitter Cards: a decision framework
| Option | Platform coverage | Control over X layout | Maintenance cost | Platform-specific copy or images |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open Graph only | Broad baseline for social consumers that read OG | None; no X card format is selected | Lowest | None |
Open Graph plus twitter:card |
Broad OG coverage plus an explicit X layout | Choose large-image or compact summary | Low | Not by itself |
| Open Graph plus all matching X fields | Broad coverage with explicit X values | Choose the layout and define every X value | Highest; values can drift apart | Full control |
| Open Graph plus only selected X overrides | Broad coverage and targeted X customization | Explicit layout plus only the overrides you need | Moderate | Control where it has a clear benefit |
For most sites, the last option is the best balance: publish a complete Open Graph baseline, set twitter:card, and add X-specific title, description, or image tags only for pages where the shared values are unsuitable.
Implement the tags step by step
1. Decide the canonical page values
For each page template, define the title, description, canonical URL, content type, and share image before writing markup. The values should describe that page, not a site-wide default. Use an absolute, publicly fetchable image URL; a private, blocked, or relative path cannot be retrieved reliably by a social crawler.
2. Add the Open Graph baseline in the document head
Place the properties in the page’s <head>. A normal website page can start with:
<meta property="og:title" content="Page title">
<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/share.jpg">
<meta property="og:description" content="Short description for the shared page">
<meta property="og:site_name" content="Example Site">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Description of the share image">
The protocol identifies the four required properties; the remaining lines are practical additions. Keep the title and description concise enough for a preview, and escape quotation marks correctly in HTML attributes.

3. Select the X card format
Add one card selector to every template whose links may be posted to X:
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
Use summary instead when a compact presentation is intentional. Do not add both values; a page should declare one desired format.
4. Add only necessary X overrides
If X should use the same title, description, and image, stop after twitter:card. If it needs different values, add the corresponding fields:
<meta name="twitter:title" content="Page title for X">
<meta name="twitter:description" content="Description for X">
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://example.com/images/x-share.jpg">
<meta name="twitter:image:alt" content="Description of the X share image">
Override one field at a time when possible. For example, retain the shared image but change only the X headline if the platform’s audience needs a different emphasis.
5. Add structured image information when available
If your CMS stores image dimensions, MIME type, or a more secure URL, publish the corresponding structured properties:
<meta property="og:image:url" content="https://example.com/images/share.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:secure_url" content="https://example.com/images/share.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:type" content="image/jpeg">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
Only emit values your system actually knows. Do not copy dimensions from a different rendition or claim a MIME type that does not match the served file.

6. Validate the rendered result
- View the final HTML source or server-rendered response and confirm that the tags are present in the
<head>, not only injected after a crawler has already fetched the page. - Open every image URL directly in an unauthenticated browser session. Confirm that it is absolute, publicly fetchable, and returns the intended image.
- Check that
og:urlmatches the canonical page URL and that the title, description, and alternative text belong to the same page. - Share the published URL through the target platform and inspect the rendered preview. Preview behavior is platform-dependent and can change, so validate after publishing rather than assuming the HTML guarantees a particular appearance.

<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://example.com/images/article-x-share.jpg">
<meta name="twitter:image:alt" content="Description of the X-specific image">
</head>
Use article when the page is an article and your consuming systems benefit from that distinction. Keep the canonical URL in og:url; add other article-specific metadata only when your platform or CMS requires it.
Image and accessibility details that prevent common failures
Use fetchable, absolute URLs
Social crawlers need to retrieve the image independently of the page visitor’s browser session. A URL beginning with https:// and pointing to a publicly reachable asset is the safest choice. Relative paths, localhost addresses, login-protected files, and URLs blocked to crawlers can produce a missing-image card even when the HTML is otherwise correct.
Describe the image with alternative text
og:image:alt and twitter:image:alt should state the useful visual information, not repeat a filename. If the image is decorative, describe the context it supplies or identify it as decorative according to your accessibility policy. Keep the X alternative text aligned with the X-specific image when that image differs from the Open Graph image.
Keep image selection deterministic
When multiple og:image values are present, the first is preferred during conflict resolution. Do not let plug-ins, layout components, and page templates emit competing first images in an unpredictable order. Define one primary image per page and append alternatives only deliberately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon mistakes and how to fix them
Adding only og:image and expecting a large X card
og:image identifies artwork but does not select X’s layout. Add twitter:card and choose summary_large_image or summary.

Duplicating every value in both namespaces
Repeated values create two sources of truth. If the X presentation can use the Open Graph title, description, and image, omit the duplicate twitter:title, twitter:description, and twitter:image. Keep those fields only where a real X-specific difference exists.
Using a non-canonical URL
Tracking parameters and alternate URL forms can split previews between several addresses. Set og:url to the canonical page URL and keep it consistent with the URL you expect people to share.
Publishing relative or private image paths
A browser may resolve a relative path while a social crawler cannot. Convert the image to an absolute public URL and verify that it can be fetched without cookies or an account.
Assuming a preview is permanent
Each platform controls its own crawler, cache, and rendering rules. A valid tag set is necessary but does not guarantee an identical preview forever. Recheck a representative URL after changing the title, image, canonical URL, or card type.
Leaving stale values in a CMS cache
If the source contains the new metadata but a platform still shows the old preview, inspect the actual response served to unauthenticated requests and then allow for platform-side caching. The rendered result, not a template file alone, is what matters.
A maintenance checklist for page templates
- Every shareable page emits
og:title,og:type,og:image, andog:url. og:urlis the canonical, absolute URL for that page.og:descriptionexplains the page rather than repeating navigation or boilerplate.- The primary
og:imageis first when multiple images are declared. - Image URLs are absolute and publicly fetchable.
og:image:altdescribes the shared image; the X alternative text matches any X-specific image.twitter:cardis present wherever an X card layout matters.- X-specific title, description, and image fields exist only when they intentionally differ from Open Graph.
- Values are generated in the server-rendered HTML or otherwise available to the crawler at fetch time.
- A published URL has been checked on the target platform after metadata changes.
What you need for different publishing setups
Static HTML
Put the tags directly in each page’s <head> or in the shared layout used to generate pages. Make the title, URL, description, and image variables page-specific rather than hard-coding one set for the whole site.
Server-rendered applications
Generate the metadata from the same record that supplies the page title and canonical URL. Confirm the initial HTTP response contains the tags; do not rely exclusively on client-side code that runs after load.
Content-management systems
Map the CMS fields to one canonical Open Graph set, then expose optional X override fields only when editors have a concrete reason to change the X presentation. Add validation that prevents an empty required property or a relative image URL from being published.
Bottom line for site owners
Implement Open Graph first: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url, plus a useful og:description. Add twitter:card to choose how X displays the link. Rely on the shared Open Graph title, description, and image unless X genuinely needs different values; then add only the relevant overrides. This gives broad coverage, explicit X layout control, and fewer duplicated fields to keep synchronized.
