Neither design wins every situation. Bone-conduction headphones are a strong fit for runners and other workouts when a secure, sports-oriented frame and an unobstructed ear canal are priorities. Air-conduction open-ear earbuds can be preferable when you want sound delivered through the air near the ear, particularly if their fit and microphone system suit you better. For calls, the specific headset matters more than the category: microphone placement, noise processing, wind protection and software all vary by model. For exercise, choose according to your movement, comfort, weather exposure, controls and real-world surroundings. No open-ear design guarantees safety or reliable awareness of hazards.

Quick verdict

What matters most Usually the better starting point Why
Running, cycling or outdoor movement with a sports frame Bone-conduction sports headphones A model such as Shokz OpenRun is built around an open-ear, bone-conduction arrangement and a movement-oriented frame.
Sound delivered through the air near the ear Air-conduction open-ear earbuds These use a speaker positioned near the ear rather than a transducer transmitting vibration through the skull.
Clear calls in wind or traffic Whichever exact model has the better microphone system in testing “Open ear” and “bone conduction” do not predict voice pickup by themselves.
Glasses, helmets or hats The design that avoids pressure and stays stable on your head Contact points and frame geometry differ substantially between models.
Hearing your surroundings Either category, at a sensible volume and in the actual setting An open ear leaves the canal unsealed, but it does not ensure that you will detect every vehicle, cyclist or warning sound.

The available evidence does not establish a controlled, head-to-head winner for call quality or exercise performance across the two categories. Treat product claims as specifications and positioning, then verify the model under the conditions in which you will use it.

How the two technologies deliver sound

Air-conduction open-ear headphones

Air-conduction open-ear headphones place a speaker near the ear and send sound through the air. They do not seal the ear canal with an in-ear tip. Bose describes its open-ear products in this way, including the Ultra Open Earbuds line and the Sport Open Earbuds announced on September 17, 2026. Because the speaker is outside the canal, you can still receive environmental sound through your ears, subject to volume, fit and the noise around you.

“Open ear” describes the listening arrangement, not one single engineering method. An air-conduction product can use different shapes, drivers, microphones and attachment systems from another product carrying the same label. Two open-ear models may therefore sound and handle calls very differently.

Bone-conduction headphones

Bone-conduction headphones use transducers that contact the head and transmit vibration through bone to the inner ear while leaving the ear canal open. Shokz markets OpenRun as an open-ear bone-conduction sports headphone. A U.S. government technical publication also describes bone-conduction transmission and the fact that the ear canal can remain open.

The open canal can be useful during outdoor activity, but it does not make the audio identical to air-conduction listening. Music, speech intelligibility, bass perception and maximum comfortable volume depend on the particular transducer, fit and environment. Do not assume that one technology will automatically sound better for every listener.

Which is better for calls?

Judge the microphone system, not the product label

Call quality depends on how well the headset captures your voice and suppresses competing sound. Relevant details include the number and location of microphones, wind filtering, voice-processing software, Bluetooth implementation and how the headset handles background noise. A bone-conduction headset can support calls, and Shokz says many of its models use microphones intended to reduce background noise. Those are manufacturer statements, not independent proof that the headset will sound clear beside traffic or in a gusty park.

Air-conduction products have the same issue. The September 17, 2026 Bose announcement describes a microphone arrangement for its then-announced Sport Open Earbuds and Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen), but a component description still does not tell you how a caller will hear you in every environment. Look for an independent recording or call test made in wind, on a street and indoors with other people speaking. If no such evidence exists, treat call performance as unverified rather than assuming the category will compensate.

Conditions that expose weak call performance

Situation What to listen for Why it matters
Quiet room Natural voice, consistent level and no pumping or clipping Establishes a baseline before adding noise.
Wind while walking or running Whether gusts overwhelm your speech or trigger aggressive filtering Open placements leave microphones exposed to airflow; results vary by design.
Traffic or public-space noise Words remaining intelligible rather than merely audible Noise suppression can remove voice detail as well as background sound.
Indoor conversation nearby Whether another speaker dominates the call Many microphone systems behave differently with voices than with steady noise.
Head movement Changes in volume, rubbing sounds or intermittent voice pickup Frames and microphones can shift as you move.

A practical call test

  1. Pair the headset with the phone or computer you actually use. Confirm that the operating system has selected its headset microphone rather than the device’s built-in microphone.
  2. Record a short message in a quiet room. Have a friend or colleague judge clarity on another device; listening through your own headset is not a valid microphone test.
  3. Repeat while walking at normal speed, then in the wind you expect during exercise. Ask the listener to identify every word, not just rate the sound as “loud.”
  4. Test beside the type of road, gym or group setting where you take calls. Keep volume and position consistent between products if you are comparing them.
  5. Check whether the headset’s controls let you answer, mute and end a call without reaching for the phone. A theoretically clear microphone is less useful if movement makes call control awkward.

If a headset passes only the quiet-room test, describe it as suitable for quiet calls rather than as a strong all-purpose calling headset. The evidence available for this comparison does not support naming either technology the universal call winner.

Which is better for exercise?

Start with the activity and movement pattern

A headset that is stable on a steady run may move during sprint intervals, strength training or technical cycling. Decide whether you need a band around the back of the head, ear hooks, a clip-like attachment or another retention method. For running and similar outdoor movement, OpenRun is a relevant bone-conduction example because it is positioned as a sports headphone. Air-conduction open-ear products are a genuine alternative when their attachment remains secure during your workout.

  • Running: Check bounce, frame pressure and whether sweat makes the contact surfaces slip.
  • Cycling: Check stability with your helmet, the visibility of controls and whether the audio remains understandable without raising volume excessively.
  • Gym training: Test movements that involve lying down, shoulder contact, jumping or repeated head turns. A frame that is comfortable while standing may press into equipment or the floor.
  • Walking and commuting: Check whether speech and environmental sounds remain distinguishable at the volume you need, while still following local traffic and cycling rules.
  • Long sessions: Look for pressure, skin contact and heat after the full duration, not just during a five-minute fitting.

Fit with glasses, hats and helmets

Try the headset with every item you normally wear. Arms of glasses can compete for the same space as an ear hook or frame. A hat can press a band toward the head, while a helmet can interfere with routing or retention. Comfort is individual: some listeners prefer the absence of an ear-canal seal, while others dislike pressure at the temples, cheekbones or behind the ears.

Weather, sweat and water exposure

Do not infer a water rating from the words “sports,” “open ear” or “bone conduction.” Verify the exact model’s stated rating and care instructions. A rating may cover sweat or rain but not swimming, showering or submersion. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and charging guidance, and remember that salt, sunscreen and grit can affect contact surfaces and controls even when a product is marketed for exercise.

Controls and handling while moving

Physical buttons can be easier to operate with wet fingers or gloves, while touch controls may be convenient but harder to use accurately during motion. Check play/pause, track changes, volume, call answer and mute functions. Make sure accidental presses are unlikely when you adjust glasses, a helmet or clothing. If you must take out your phone to perform basic actions, that may outweigh a small difference in sound quality.

Environmental audio is not a safety guarantee

Both designs can leave the ear canal open, but hearing the environment depends on the volume, the fit, the direction and level of outside sound, and your own hearing. Wind, road noise and crowds can mask warnings. Keep volume moderate, stay alert and follow local rules for cycling, running and road use. Never treat an open-ear label as permission to ignore traffic or other hazards.

Comparison checklist for two specific models

Category Questions to answer before buying Evidence to prefer
Call performance Where are the microphones? Is there independent testing in wind and background voices? Can you mute and answer from the headset? Recorded samples or controlled reviews that identify the test conditions.
Exercise fit Does it stay put during your exact activity? Does it clash with glasses, hats or helmets? Are pressure points acceptable after a full session? A return period that lets you perform the real workout, plus reviews using similar gear.
Environmental audio Can you hear speech and nearby sound at your normal listening level? Does louder music make that impossible? Practical use in your route or facility, not a blanket safety claim.
Sound How do music, podcasts and spoken calls sound to you? Is maximum comfortable volume enough outdoors? Your own listening test with familiar recordings.
Weather What exact water rating applies? Is it suitable for sweat, rain or submersion? What care is required? The model’s current specifications and care documentation.
Controls Can you operate volume, playback and calls with gloves or wet fingers? Are controls easy to find without looking? Hands-on testing during movement.
Compatibility Does it pair reliably with your phone, computer and preferred calling apps? Are firmware updates required? Current device requirements and user reports for your operating system.

How to choose step by step

  1. Name the primary use. Choose one main scenario—outdoor running, commuting, gym work, office calls or mixed use. A product optimized for one may not excel at all of them.
  2. Choose the sound route you prefer. Select air-conduction open ear if you want a speaker near the ear and prefer that presentation. Select bone conduction if a transducer contacting the head and a sports-oriented open-ear frame suit you.
  3. Set a call requirement. If calls occur in wind, traffic or shared rooms, make independent microphone evidence a buying requirement. Do not substitute a manufacturer’s microphone count or noise-reduction description for a real test.
  4. Check physical compatibility. Try the model with glasses, hats, helmets, masks and any other equipment you wear. Reject a model that creates pain or instability before considering its sound.
  5. Verify weather and controls. Read the exact model’s water rating, care instructions and control layout. Category-level assumptions are not enough.
  6. Test in the real environment. Walk or exercise at your normal pace, make a call, and listen at the volume you would actually use. If a return window applies, use it before exposing the headset to conditions that could invalidate a return.
  7. Decide whether the trade-off is acceptable. If the headset is stable and comfortable but calls fail in your normal wind, it is not the right all-purpose choice. If calls are excellent but the frame interferes with your helmet, it is not the right exercise choice.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming open ear means identical products

Open ear refers to the fact that the canal is not sealed. It does not identify whether the product uses air conduction or bone conduction, how it is held in place, or how its microphones process sound. Read the technical description for the exact model.

Using a manufacturer claim as a comparative result

Statements that a headset supports calls, reduces background noise or helps you hear surroundings are useful product information. They are not a controlled comparison against another category. Look for test conditions and independent recordings before making a call-quality judgment.

Testing only indoors

A quiet room hides the problems most likely to affect outdoor users: wind, traffic, clothing movement and inconsistent fit. Include those conditions in your trial.

Buying by water rating alone

A water-resistance label does not tell you whether the headset stays comfortable, whether buttons work with sweat or gloves, or whether the design survives the specific exposure you have in mind. Confirm the exact permitted use.

Raising volume to overcome noise

More volume may make music easier to hear but can reduce your ability to notice environmental sounds and may be uncomfortable. If you regularly need excessive volume outdoors, choose a better-fitting model or a quieter route rather than assuming the open design solves the problem.

Shokz OpenRun

OpenRun is presented by Shokz as an open-ear bone-conduction sports headphone, making it a relevant example for runners and other activities where a sports-oriented frame is important. Shokz also says its headphones support calls and that many models use microphones intended to reduce background noise. Confirm the current model’s fit, water rating, controls and call behavior for your use; those statements do not establish performance in your particular wind or traffic conditions.

Bose open-ear products

Bose positions its open-ear range for situations in which the listener wants to remain aware of the environment. Its September 17, 2026 announcement describes microphone hardware for the then-announced Sport Open Earbuds and Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen). These products represent the air-conduction alternative, but the announcement alone does not prove better call clarity, stronger exercise stability or safer awareness than a bone-conduction headset.

Product lineups, availability and features can change. Compare the exact generation and regional version you can buy, not a similarly named predecessor or an announcement summary.

What the evidence can—and cannot—answer

Air-conduction open-ear and bone-conduction headphones clearly use different sound-delivery routes. The available manufacturer and government descriptions support that distinction, but they do not establish that one route always sounds better, keeps a better fit or produces clearer calls. No controlled independent head-to-head test of current models was established for this comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That limitation changes the buying decision: use category descriptions to narrow the field, then use model-level evidence and your own call and exercise trials to choose. For outdoor workouts, a secure bone-conduction sports model is a sensible place to start when that frame suits your gear. For calls, select the headset with verified microphone performance in the environments where you actually speak, regardless of whether it uses air conduction or bone conduction.
