OCP hardware is not one server model. The Open Compute Project publishes interoperable specifications and reference designs for racks, power, cooling, compute, networking, management and facilities. An OCP deployment therefore treats the rack and data center as an integrated system, with defined interfaces that can give operators more supplier choice, faster deployment and easier servicing—provided every component is validated against the particular design.

That distinction matters most for AI. Accelerator racks now demand far more power, tighter thermal control, specialized networking and coordinated facility planning than conventional enterprise servers. OCP supplies a common design language for those decisions, but it does not guarantee that equipment from different vendors will be plug-and-play.

What OCP hardware means

The Open Compute Project (OCP) is a community and standards effort that publishes open specifications, reference designs and implementation guidance for data-center infrastructure. Its scope extends from individual compute trays to rack mechanics, power conversion, cooling distribution, network fabrics, telemetry and site-level systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When people say “OCP server,” they may mean a server built to an OCP specification, a tray designed for an OCP rack, or a vendor product that has earned an OCP program designation. The term does not identify one universal chassis, processor platform or procurement catalog. Compatibility depends on the exact revision, mechanical envelope, electrical interface, firmware, cooling method and vendor implementation.

OCP’s Solution Provider Program recognizes products and facilities that apply OCP contributions with designations including OCP Inspired, OCP Accepted and OCP Ready. Those labels indicate how a product or solution relates to OCP requirements; they are not a substitute for checking the integration details of a proposed deployment.

Open Rack versus a conventional 19-inch rack

The best-known OCP architecture is Open Rack. OCP’s Rack & Power work covers both traditional 19-inch EIA-compatible racks and 21-inch Open Rack architectures. Open Rack defines more than a cabinet width: rack-level power conversion, busbars, shelves, supports, sub-chassis, adapters and service clearances are treated as parts of a coordinated platform.

Design aspect 19-inch EIA-compatible approach 21-inch Open Rack approach
Nominal equipment width 19-inch EIA equipment envelope 21-inch Open Rack equipment envelope
Power architecture Often organized around the server or enclosure; implementation varies by supplier Rack-level power conversion, distribution and control are defined as platform elements
Mechanical integration Standard rails and chassis interfaces are common, but rack-level details differ Shelves, supports, sub-chassis and adapters are specified with the rack ecosystem
Service model Typically service the server as an individual unit Designed for tray-level servicing and coordinated rack interfaces
Interchangeability Physical fit does not guarantee electrical, thermal or management compatibility Open specifications improve the chance of interchangeability, but validation is still required

The wider Open Rack envelope can provide additional room for power components, cabling and airflow or liquid manifolds. The practical benefit is not simply extra width; it is the ability to design the rack, trays and power path together. An organization moving from standard cabinets must account for rack procurement, rails or shelves, busbar interfaces, distribution voltage, blind-mate connectors, grounding, service clearances and the facility’s upstream power equipment.

Why AI changes the rack design center

AI accelerators concentrate compute, electrical load and heat in a small physical area. The Open Compute Project Foundation’s Open Data Center for AI whitepaper, published in April 2026, says rack power densities have increased by more than an order of magnitude and cites roadmaps toward 1 MW racks in the next few years. That figure is a roadmap target discussed by OCP, not a universal specification or a promise that every site can support it.

At these densities, selecting a GPU or other accelerator tray first and asking the facility to accommodate it later creates avoidable redesign. The rack must be evaluated as a power-and-thermal envelope:

  • How much continuous and transient power does each tray draw?
  • Which conversion stages are in the rack, and which remain in the facility?
  • Can the site provide the required voltage, redundancy and ride-through?
  • Will air cooling maintain allowable inlet temperatures at the planned density?
  • If liquid cooling is used, where are the coolant-distribution units (CDUs), manifolds, pumps, leak detection and service isolation points?
  • Do the rack controller and facility-management system expose the telemetry needed to operate safely?

OCP’s facility work addresses power, water, cooling, emissions and supply-chain considerations, while identifying liquid-to-rack distribution systems and next-generation machine-learning infrastructure as active areas. The result is a shift from “server specification” to site-level engineering.

How OCP designs support AI clusters

Networking is part of the compute design

An accelerator tray’s performance depends on communication as well as its local processors. OCP’s Open Cluster Designs for AI initiative is scoped to procurement- and deployment-ready designs covering networking, topology, cabling, air- and liquid-cooled solutions, and power and cooling infrastructure.

For an evaluation, separate the network into two functions:

  • Scale-up: high-bandwidth, low-latency links between accelerators in the same server or rack.
  • Scale-out: the fabric connecting racks so a distributed training or inference job can use a larger cluster.

Check the physical cable paths, bend radius, connector types, transceiver placement, port count, switch locations and service access. A design that fits the accelerators but forces cables across hot aisles or blocks tray removal is not deployment-ready.

Power and thermal synchronization

AI workloads can change load quickly. The rack power system, upstream distribution, cooling controls and workload scheduler should be evaluated together for transient behavior and fault handling. Ask vendors for supported power envelopes, protection settings, allowable inlet or coolant conditions, and the procedure for isolating a failed shelf, pump or tray without taking down the entire cluster.

Pod and facility scale

OCP guidance is intended to be applied beyond a single rack. A pod or cluster design must include row layout, network aggregation, cable trays, chilled-water or other heat-rejection capacity, electrical rooms, battery or energy-storage placement, fire protection and maintenance routes. The site’s utility interconnection and local regulations can constrain the design even when the rack specification is satisfied.

Air cooling, liquid cooling and CDUs

Air cooling remains simpler where rack density and ambient conditions permit it. It uses familiar fans, computer-room air handlers and containment practices, but fan power and airflow requirements rise sharply as accelerator heat output increases. Hot spots, recirculation and limited floor-level airflow can become the limiting factors before the electrical service does.

Liquid cooling moves heat through cold plates, rear-door heat exchangers or other liquid-cooled components. A CDU typically separates the facility loop from the rack loop, controls temperature and flow, and provides monitoring and isolation. Liquid systems can support higher densities, but they add pumps, manifolds, hoses or hard piping, leak detection, coolant treatment, commissioning steps and specialized service procedures.

Question Air-cooled design Liquid-cooled design
Primary heat-transfer path Fans and room or contained airflow Coolant loop through cold plates, rear-door units or similar hardware
Facility dependencies Air-handling capacity, temperature control and airflow distribution Facility water or heat-rejection loop, CDU capacity, pumps and leak controls
Service considerations Fan and filter maintenance; airflow obstruction checks Fluid isolation, draining or quick-disconnect procedures, leak detection and coolant maintenance
Density suitability Constrained by allowable airflow and fan power Better suited to very high densities when the facility is engineered for it

There is no universal OCP mandate to use liquid cooling. The correct choice depends on accelerator power, rack density, climate, available water or heat rejection, maintenance capability and the cost of modifying the facility. Compare the complete cooling chain rather than the server’s advertised thermal design power alone.

Telemetry and operations across IT and facilities

OCP describes telemetry as the automated collection and analysis of power, thermal and mechanical metrics. In the Open Data Center for AI whitepaper, telemetry is described as a way to reduce power and water consumption, support predictive failure analysis and improve reliability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For procurement, request an end-to-end telemetry map. It should show which metrics are available from:

  • compute trays, accelerators, fans and temperature sensors;
  • rack controllers, power shelves, busbars and backup or storage systems;
  • CDUs, pumps, valves, flow meters and leak detectors;
  • switches, optical modules and environmental sensors; and
  • facility-management, electrical-distribution and building-control systems.

Also verify API formats, sampling rates, timestamps, alarm behavior, retention, authentication and ownership of the data. A rack may be mechanically compliant yet difficult to operate if its power and cooling telemetry cannot be integrated with the site’s monitoring and automation tools.

What “open” does—and does not—guarantee

Open specifications can reduce dependence on a single proprietary mechanical or electrical design. They may let an operator qualify more than one supplier for a tray, rack, power shelf or cooling component, and they can make future upgrades easier when interfaces remain stable.

Interchangeability is conditional. Before treating two products as substitutes, verify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The exact OCP specification and revision each product implements.
  2. Mechanical fit, shelf loading, rail position, blind-mate connectors and service clearances.
  3. Input voltage, busbar or power-shelf requirements, protection settings and transient limits.
  4. Airflow direction or liquid-loop pressure, temperature, flow and coolant requirements.
  5. Firmware, management protocols, telemetry APIs and security controls.
  6. Network port placement, cable assemblies, optics and switch compatibility.
  7. Warranty, support boundaries, replacement procedures and regional availability.

Use the OCP designation as one piece of evidence, then require vendor integration documents and a proof-of-concept in the intended rack and facility environment.

How to evaluate an OCP AI rack

  1. Define the workload. Record accelerator count, memory needs, training or inference pattern, expected utilization and scale-up versus scale-out communication.
  2. Choose the rack envelope. Decide whether a 21-inch Open Rack or 19-inch EIA-compatible architecture fits the existing rooms, rows, rails, cable paths and service equipment.
  3. Build the power budget. Include accelerator trays, CPUs, memory, switches, fans, pumps, CDUs, conversion losses, redundancy and startup or transient behavior. Confirm the facility can deliver the resulting load.
  4. Select the cooling architecture. Model airflow for air cooling or loop temperature, flow, pressure, CDU capacity and heat rejection for liquid cooling. Include maintenance isolation and leak response.
  5. Design the network at cluster scale. Map scale-up links, scale-out fabrics, switch tiers, cable lengths, optics, pathways and removal clearances.
  6. Specify telemetry and controls. List required metrics, APIs, alarms, access controls and integration points with IT and operational-technology systems.
  7. Validate serviceability. Time tray replacement, power-shelf isolation, cable access, filter or fan work, coolant servicing and fault recovery using the actual rack layout.
  8. Check commercial and lifecycle terms. Confirm OCP designation, supplier location, lead times, spares, warranty, support response, upgrade paths and the cost of any facility retrofit.
  9. Pilot before broad deployment. Test the complete rack or pod under representative load, including power transients, thermal extremes, network congestion, telemetry alarms and recovery from component failures.

Does OCP reduce power, cooling and total cost?

OCP’s design goals include fewer retrofits, faster time to first token, stronger supply-chain alignment, more fungible facilities and longer facility life. Standardized interfaces can reduce engineering duplication and make repeat deployments easier. Rack-level power and cooling designs may also improve utilization when they are matched to the workload and site.

Those are objectives, not universal measured outcomes. Actual savings depend on geography, utility tariffs, interconnection capacity, workload utilization, cooling method, construction costs, labor, vendor pricing and local regulation. An open rack can cost more to deploy if a site must replace rails, electrical distribution, cooling loops or service tooling. Compare total cost of ownership, not just the purchase price of the compute tray.

Grid-aware AI facilities and the next design priorities

The April 2026 OCP whitepaper treats AI data centers as grid-relevant loads and lists energy and grid solutions, open service-level agreements, telemetry and power-estimation methods among current priorities. A 1 MW rack roadmap makes this planning urgent: a cluster may require staged energization, demand management, on-site generation or storage, and explicit agreements with the utility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Power-estimation methods are especially important for procurement. Ask suppliers to distinguish nameplate, expected, peak and transient values, and to state the assumptions behind each. Align those figures with cooling capacity, network utilization and the service level promised to the workload. The objective is a predictable operating envelope rather than an optimistic single number.

Common mistakes and recovery steps

Buying a compliant-looking tray without the rack system

Problem: the tray fits physically but lacks the required shelf, busbar, airflow or management integration.

Recovery: obtain the complete rack bill of materials and interface control documents before issuing a purchase order; test the tray, power shelf, cooling and controller together.

Assuming air cooling will scale indefinitely

Problem: fan power, hot spots or room airflow become the constraint as accelerator density rises.

Bottom line for AI buyers

OCP hardware is an open, rack-to-facility design approach. Open Rack adds a 21-inch architecture alongside 19-inch EIA-compatible options, with power, shelves, supports and adapters treated as system interfaces. For AI, the decisive questions are cluster topology, high-density power, air or liquid cooling, telemetry, serviceability and the facility’s ability to support the complete operating envelope.

Use OCP specifications and designations to widen the supplier and lifecycle options, but verify every mechanical, electrical, thermal, network and software interface in the exact rack and site you intend to deploy. The value comes from coordinated system engineering—not from assuming that the word “open” makes unrelated hardware interchangeable.
