OPay advertises transfers to other Nigerian bank accounts as free, but the waiver is subject to limits and restrictions shown for your account in the OPay app. OPay describes interbank transfers as instant and available anytime, yet its own FAQ says transactions can take time to reflect and that network conditions can delay them. There is no publicly established, universal personal-account fee, transaction ceiling, or guaranteed arrival time that applies to every customer.
Before you confirm a transfer, check the fee, permitted amount, and any warning displayed on your specific account. If your account is debited but the recipient cannot see the funds, use the transaction details to open OPay support rather than sending a second payment.
Does OPay charge for bank transfers?
OPay’s consumer-facing wording is “Transfer to other Nigerian bank accounts for free*.” The asterisk is important: OPay says free-transfer limits and other restrictions may apply and directs customers to the OPay app for the latest applicable terms.
That supports a practical answer, not an unconditional promise. A transfer may be advertised as free while your account, transfer type, or current allowance is subject to an in-app restriction. The amount and terms shown immediately before confirmation are the most relevant information for your account.

What you can safely expect
- Transfers from OPay to another Nigerian bank are marketed as free by OPay.
- The waiver is qualified by limits and restrictions.
- OPay does not publish one fixed personal-account fee schedule in its public consumer information.
- You should verify the fee line in the app before tapping the final confirmation button.
Do merchant charges apply to a personal transfer?
No evidence supports applying OPay’s merchant pricing to an ordinary personal wallet. OPay’s payment-service pricing page lists local processing at 1.5%, capped at ₦2,000; international processing at 4%; OPay-wallet payouts at ₦5 per transaction; and payouts to other banks or mobile-money operators at ₦10 for ₦5,000 and below and ₦25 for the stated ₦5,001–₦50,000 band. Those are merchant service rates, not a verified tariff for a consumer’s interbank transfer.
If you are using a personal account, do not calculate your expected charge from those merchant figures. Use the amount and fee displayed in your own transfer flow.
What is the OPay transfer limit?
No universal personal-account transfer ceiling is published in OPay’s public consumer information. OPay’s consumer page says limits and restrictions may apply and tells customers to consult the app for the latest terms. Personal limits can therefore depend on the account’s current status and the rules displayed in-app.

OPay’s FAQ states: “You can receive and send up to 5 million Naira daily as an OPay merchant.” This is a merchant-account limit. It should not be presented as the limit for an individual wallet, and it does not establish that every personal customer can send or receive ₦5 million per day.

How to check your own available limit
- Open the OPay app and start the bank-transfer flow.
- Choose the recipient bank and enter the account details and amount.
- Review the confirmation screen for any fee, remaining allowance, restriction, or maximum-amount message.
- If the app refuses the amount, reduce it or follow the account-verification instructions shown there instead of relying on a generic figure found elsewhere.
- Save the transaction record after a successful transfer so you can reference the exact amount and status.
The app is the appropriate place to check an account-specific threshold because OPay says its latest applicable terms are presented there. Limits can change, so an old screenshot or a figure quoted for another account is not reliable evidence for yours.
How long does an OPay transfer take?
OPay describes interbank transfers as “instant” and says they are available anytime. That is a service description, not a guaranteed arrival window for every transaction. OPay’s FAQ also says transactions can take time to reflect and that delays may depend on network connection status.
What “instant” means in practice
Many transfers may be credited quickly when the sending and receiving systems are available. However, a recipient might see a delay while a bank or payment network processes the transaction, even if the sender’s OPay screen changes to successful. OPay does not publish a guaranteed number of seconds or minutes, so do not promise a precise completion time.

Funds and alerts are different events
OPay says a transaction alert can take a few days to arrive and advises checking the recipient’s OPay balance. A missing SMS, push notification, or email does not by itself prove that the money is missing. Ask the recipient to check the actual account balance and transaction history, not just the notification inbox.

What can cause a delay?
- Temporary network or connectivity problems affecting the transfer path.
- Processing time before the receiving institution reflects the credit.
- A notification arriving after the funds have already been posted.
- Incorrect recipient details, which can route a payment to another account.
Keep the transaction reference and the exact time and amount available while waiting. Do not repeat the transfer merely because an alert has not appeared.
Why was my OPay account debited but the receiver has not received the money?
First distinguish between a delayed notification and a missing credit. Have the recipient check the balance and transaction history directly. If the balance still does not show the transfer, use OPay’s support path for the specific transaction.
OPay’s recommended support path
- Open the transaction in your OPay transaction history.
- Open the transaction details page.
- Tap Chat with OPay Support.
- Continue in the support chat; OPay says the transaction details are loaded automatically, giving support the relevant record.
Keep screenshots of the debit, the recipient’s account information as entered, and any status message. Never share your password, one-time code, or full authentication credentials in a support conversation.

If the account number was wrong
OPay’s FAQ advises contacting the unintended recipient directly when a transfer was sent to an incorrect account number. Act quickly, keep the payment reference, and also report the situation through the transaction-support route. A completed transfer to a valid but unintended account is different from a technical delay; recovery may depend on cooperation from the recipient and the institutions involved.

A practical status checklist
| What you see | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No debit and no record | The transfer may not have been submitted. | Check transaction history and restart only after confirming that no payment was created. |
| Debited, recipient has not seen funds | The credit may still be processing or reflecting. | Ask the recipient to check balance and history, then open the transaction and use Chat with OPay Support. |
| Recipient has funds, no alert | The notification is late even though the credit posted. | Use the balance and transaction record as the confirmation; alerts can arrive later. |
| Transfer sent to wrong account | The payment may have reached an unintended valid account. | Contact the unintended recipient immediately and report the transaction through OPay support. |
| App displays a restriction or limit | Your account’s current terms prevent that amount or transfer type. | Follow the in-app instruction, reduce the amount if appropriate, or complete any requested verification. |
Personal account versus merchant account
Account type changes which published figures are relevant. Treating a merchant number as a personal allowance is one of the most common ways to get an incorrect answer about OPay limits.
| Question | Personal account | Merchant account |
|---|---|---|
| Public transfer-fee statement | Consumer page advertises free transfers to other Nigerian banks, subject to limits and restrictions shown in the app. | Merchant pricing is a separate payment-service schedule. |
| Published limit in OPay’s official information | No universal personal ceiling stated. | OPay FAQ says up to ₦5 million received and sent daily. |
| Where to verify current terms | OPay app before confirmation. | Merchant terms and the applicable merchant dashboard or agreement. |
| Can the figure be transferred to the other account type? | No. | No; the ₦5 million statement is not evidence of a personal-wallet limit. |
How to avoid failed or duplicated transfers
Check the recipient before sending
Confirm the bank name, account number, and displayed account name. Compare the details with the recipient through a separate channel if the amount is significant. A successful transfer to the wrong account is harder to recover than a transfer that fails before debit.
Review the final confirmation screen
Read the amount, recipient, fee, and any restriction message. Because OPay says free-transfer limits may apply, the confirmation screen is more authoritative for your account than a general statement that transfers are free.

OPay’s app listing describes a transaction-history view. Record the reference, status, amount, and timestamp immediately after sending. This information helps support distinguish a delayed posting, a rejected transfer, and a wrong-account complaint.

Do not send again simply because an alert is late
Alerts may arrive days after the underlying credit. Verify the recipient’s balance and history first. Sending a duplicate can create two valid payments that require recovery.
What OPay’s public descriptions do—and do not—prove
OPay Digital Services Limited operates the service under OPay’s terms. The Central Bank of Nigeria registry lists Opay Digital Services Limited in the Mobile Money Operator licence category. That regulatory listing provides context about the service operator; it does not guarantee that a particular transfer will succeed or arrive within a fixed period.
OPay’s terms page identifies Version 5.0 dated July 26, 2025, and describes transfers between a mobile-money wallet and a bank account or another user’s wallet or account. The app listing describes bank and phone-number transfers and transaction history. Promotional wording such as “100% success rate” in an app listing should be treated as marketing copy, not an independently verified guarantee.

Before you rely on a fee, limit, or timing claim
- Check the OPay app immediately before confirming the transfer.
- Confirm whether the account is personal or merchant.
- Read any free-transfer allowance, restriction, or warning shown for that transaction.
- Use the recipient’s balance and transaction history, not only an alert, to verify receipt.
- If debited and unresolved, open transaction details and tap Chat with OPay Support.
- If the account number was wrong, contact the unintended recipient promptly as well as reporting the transfer.
OPay can change fee waivers, limits, and restrictions. For a transfer you are about to make, the current in-app terms are more useful than a static number quoted for another customer or an earlier date.
