Short answer: Some onn televisions have an analog/digital tuner, a coaxial cable input and a cable-channel scan, but the available official specifications do not confirm clear-QAM support across the onn range. A coax connector or a listing that says “digital tuner” is not the same as an explicit QAM specification. To know whether your set can receive unencrypted cable channels directly, identify its full model number and check that model’s manual or specification sheet for “QAM” or “clear QAM.”
Why the QAM question matters
QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) is one of the modulation systems used to carry digital cable television. A television can have a digital tuner and still lack the particular cable-demodulation capability needed for clear-QAM channels. “Clear” means the channel is not encrypted; it does not mean every digital cable signal is automatically compatible.
When a cable company supplies a set-top box, the box performs the tuning and any required decryption. The TV then displays the box’s output through HDMI, composite video or another available input. In that arrangement, the TV’s built-in QAM capability is not what determines whether you can watch your subscribed channels.

What the published onn information actually establishes
Official onn material documents several relevant features, but it does not provide a brand-wide clear-QAM compatibility list. The evidence is model-specific and should be read that way.

That distinction explains why a simple “yes” or “no” for the entire onn brand would be misleading. The documented features show that some sets can scan a cable feed, while the reviewed specifications stop short of naming the QAM standard.
How to verify your particular onn TV
1. Find the complete model number
Look at the label on the back of the television, the original carton or the TV’s information/settings screen. Record every digit and suffix. A screen size alone is not enough: onn sells multiple products in the same size class, and regional suffixes can identify different hardware or documentation.
2. Open the documentation for that exact model
Use onn’s model-indexed manual collection and the specification page associated with the number you recorded. Do not substitute a manual for a similarly named set. Older and newer software can also use different menu names.

3. Search for an explicit QAM statement
Strong confirmation uses wording such as “QAM,” “clear QAM” or a detailed tuner specification that clearly identifies digital cable demodulation. Statements limited to “analog/digital tuner,” “cable,” “coaxial” or “coax input” describe a connection or a broad tuner category; they do not settle the QAM question.
4. Check the channel’s protection status
Ask the cable provider whether the channels you want are unencrypted. A TV that supports clear QAM still cannot independently decode encrypted services. Many provider lineups also place subscribed channels behind a box even when some local channels may be unencrypted.
5. Ask onn when the paperwork is silent
Give support the complete model number and ask specifically whether the internal tuner supports clear-QAM channels from a direct cable-wall connection. Request a model-specific answer rather than relying on a general statement that the TV has a digital tuner.

- Connect the source: Attach the cable line from the wall (or another unencrypted cable feed) to the television’s coaxial/cable connector. Push the connector on firmly so the center conductor makes contact.
- Open live television: From the home screen, open the Antenna TV or Live TV tile, depending on the interface shown on your set.
- Choose input setup: Select the option for setting up or configuring the TV input, then choose the cable source rather than an antenna source if the menu distinguishes them.
- Start finding channels: Start the automatic channel search. Keep the cable connected and do not power off the TV while the scan is running.
- Allow time for completion: The documented workflow says scanning may take up to 30 minutes. The duration is a procedure estimate, not a measurement of how many channels your provider carries.
- Review the results: Test the channels that appear. A partial list can mean that only some services are unencrypted, that the signal level is poor, or that the TV does not support the modulation used by the missing channels.
If your menus do not contain these labels, consult the manual for your recorded model number. A different interface does not by itself prove that the tuner lacks QAM.
How to interpret a failed or incomplete scan
No channels found
- Confirm that the coaxial lead is connected to the TV’s cable input, not an output or an unrelated connector.
- Verify with the provider that an active signal is present at that outlet.
- Run the scan with the source set to cable when the TV offers an Air/Cable choice.
- Check the exact model documentation for an explicit QAM reference. If the documentation only says digital tuner or coaxial, compatibility remains unconfirmed.
Only a few channels appear
This can occur when a provider leaves only certain services unencrypted. It can also indicate that the TV receives some digital services but not the modulation, symbol rate or protection method used by the rest of the lineup. Ask the provider which channels are clear and whether a box is required.
The scan finds channels but they are unwatchable
Pixelation, audio dropouts and intermittent loss point first to signal quality, splitters, damaged coaxial cable or loose connectors. If the physical connection checks out, compare the result with the provider’s channel information and the model’s documented tuner capabilities.
A provider box works, but the direct scan does not
That result is consistent with encrypted or otherwise unsupported services. Connect the provider box to an available HDMI or other compatible input and use the box’s remote to change channels. The television becomes the display; the box handles tuning.

Built-in tuner versus a provider box
A direct coax connection is convenient only when three conditions align: the TV’s exact tuner supports the signal, the channels are unencrypted and the provider delivers that signal at the outlet. A set-top box removes the first two uncertainties for subscribed services because it is supplied to handle the provider’s format and encryption.
Do not assume that buying an external “digital” or ATSC tuner will solve a QAM problem. ATSC devices are generally marketed for over-the-air antenna reception, and the ATSC label does not establish clear-QAM cable support. An external device is worth considering only after its own specifications explicitly list clear QAM, its outputs match the TV and the provider confirms that the desired channels are available without encryption.
A practical comparison checklist for onn models
When comparing two candidate televisions, use the same questions for each model instead of comparing screen size or a generic tuner label:

- Documentation match: Use the manual and specification sheet for that exact model, since legacy instructions are not proof about newer sets.
If one model has an explicit clear-QAM statement and another lists only an analog/digital tuner, the first has documented support while the second remains unresolved. If neither document names QAM, contact onn before treating either television as a direct cable solution.
What you can conclude about onn TVs
onn televisions are not covered by a single published QAM rule. The official material confirms that some models include both television tuning and coaxial cable connectivity, and it documents a cable-scan workflow. It does not confirm clear-QAM reception for the entire product line, nor does it establish that model 100069454-CA supports QAM merely because its specification says “Analog/Digital TV Tuner YES” and “Coaxial/Cable YES.”
For a reliable answer, use the full model number, locate an explicit QAM statement or obtain confirmation from onn support, and verify that the provider’s channels are unencrypted. When a provider box is supplied, use that box rather than depending on the TV’s internal scan.
