Choose the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro if the box itself must run Plex Media Server, store media on USB, use wired Gigabit Ethernet, or pass through formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS:X. Choose an onn 4K Google TV model when you already run Plex Media Server on a PC or NAS and only need an inexpensive Google TV client. The recommendation depends first on client versus server use, then on which onn generation you are actually buying.
The name “onn 4K” covers several current devices with different storage and memory. The standard 4K model is listed with 8GB storage and 2GB RAM, the 4K Plus with 16GB and 2GB, and the 4K Pro with 32GB and 3GB. Do not apply one model’s specifications to another.
Start with the Plex job you need the device to do
Plex has two separate roles. A client is the app on your television or streaming box that browses and plays a library. A Plex Media Server stores the library, manages users, and supplies files to clients. A household can run the server on a desktop, mini-PC, NAS, or SHIELD while using another device as the client.

- If your server already runs on a computer or NAS, both an onn Google TV device and SHIELD TV are plausible Plex clients.
- If you want the streaming box to be the server, NVIDIA documents that capability on SHIELD TV. The same documentation describes hardware A/V transcoding and access to USB, NAS, and SHIELD storage.
- Official Android TV and Google TV devices can run the regular Android Plex app, which supports the onn platform as a client. That platform evidence does not prove that every onn generation can host a server or play every local audio and video format.
Decide this before comparing prices. A cheaper client cannot replace a server, and a server-capable box may be unnecessary if your existing computer already does that work.
Which onn 4K model are you comparing?
Retail listings use similar names for several devices. The Walmart product descriptions cited for this comparison separate the lineup as follows:
| Device listed | Internal storage | RAM | Other listed details | Plex interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| onn 4K Google TV streaming device | 8GB | 2GB | 4K output, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, dual-band Wi-Fi | Suitable candidate for the Google TV Plex client; server capability is not established. |
| onn 4K Plus | 16GB | 2GB | Additional model-specific details are not stated in the cited listing. | More local app/storage headroom than the 8GB model, but do not infer server or codec support. |
| onn 4K Pro | 32GB | 3GB | Additional model-specific details are not stated in the cited listing. | Largest listed onn storage and RAM; still treat it as a Plex client unless the manufacturer documents otherwise. |
Availability and specifications can change by region and seller. Check the exact model name, storage, RAM, ports, wireless specification, and return terms on the listing you intend to purchase. A cached price is not a reliable comparison because the surfaced onn listings showed changing availability.
What SHIELD TV Pro adds for Plex
NVIDIA lists the SHIELD TV Pro with a Tegra X1+ processor, 3GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, Android TV, Gigabit Ethernet, and two USB 3.0 ports. Its 16GB capacity can be expanded with USB drives. The product page also lists Plex as an included app.
NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV guide says the device includes both the Plex client and Plex Media Server. The client can connect to a server on a PC, a standalone NAS, or the SHIELD itself. For server use, the guide describes real-time hardware A/V transcoding and media access from USB-connected drives, NAS storage, and SHIELD storage. It also describes live-TV and DVR functions when the required account and hardware are present.

When an onn box is the better Plex purchase
You already have a capable server
If Plex Media Server is running on a desktop, mini-PC, or NAS, the streaming box mainly needs a stable network connection, a current Plex app, and output compatible with your television and receiver. An onn Google TV model can fill that client role without duplicating server hardware.
You want the lowest practical client cost
The onn lineup is positioned as a streaming-device family, and the cited listings identify Plex among the available streaming categories. Select the model by the storage and connectivity you need rather than assuming that “4K” identifies one fixed specification. Confirm the live price and stock for your market at checkout.
Your system uses ordinary TV speakers or basic HDMI audio
For a television’s built-in speakers or a receiver that accepts the formats your server already delivers, the documented SHIELD passthrough formats may not matter. Ask whether your library contains lossless Dolby or DTS tracks before paying for SHIELD-specific audio capability.

When SHIELD TV Pro is worth choosing
You want one box to run the server and client
SHIELD is the only device in this comparison for which the manufacturer explicitly documents Plex Media Server. It can serve the library locally while also playing it on the connected television, or provide the server to other Plex clients around your home.
You need USB storage
The Pro has two USB 3.0 ports and supports media on USB drives. That lets you keep a larger library than the internal 16GB storage allows, although the drive, filesystem, power arrangement, and library organization still affect reliability.
You can use Ethernet
Gigabit Ethernet gives the Pro a documented wired option for a server that must deliver high-bitrate files. It is also useful when the television cabinet has weak Wi-Fi or when several clients share the wireless network. An onn buyer should verify whether the exact model has Ethernet or requires an adapter; the cited onn listings do not establish that detail.
Your receiver needs the listed passthrough formats
NVIDIA lists Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and DTS:X passthrough over HDMI for SHIELD TV Pro. That is a documented specification, not a promise that every file will direct play: the Plex client, server, receiver, television, and file profile all participate in the result.
Setting up an onn device as a Plex client
Use this path when the server is elsewhere. Menu wording can change with Google TV updates, but the sequence is consistent.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Connect the onn device to an HDMI input and its supplied power source. Select that HDMI input on the television.
- Complete Google TV setup, connect to the same home network as the Plex server, and install available system updates.
- Open the Google Play Store, search for the official Plex app, and install it. Sign in with the account that has access to your server.
- Choose the server shown in the Plex app and open a library. Start with a file you know the server can play without conversion.
- Check playback information in Plex. If the file is direct playing, the server is sending a compatible stream. If it is transcoding, inspect the reason before assuming the onn hardware is at fault.
- Test the formats you actually watch: a typical 4K HDR file, a file with subtitles, and any audio track routed through your receiver. A platform-level app listing does not guarantee identical handling for every codec or audio combination.
Setting up SHIELD as a Plex client or server
Using SHIELD only as a client
Open the included Plex app, sign in, and select the server running on your PC, NAS, or another SHIELD. This arrangement leaves indexing, storage, and transcoding on the existing server. It is the simplest way to use SHIELD’s TV playback and HDMI audio features without moving your library.
Using SHIELD as the server
- Decide where the media will live: SHIELD internal storage, a USB drive attached to the Pro, or a network share on your NAS.
- Connect SHIELD to your network. Prefer the documented Gigabit Ethernet port for a wired server path when practical.
- Open Plex on SHIELD and complete the account and server setup prompts. Enable Plex Media Server when the setup screen offers that option; labels can vary by software version.
- Add the folders containing your media and allow Plex to scan them. Keep the server’s database and metadata on storage with dependable free space.
- From another Plex client, sign in to the same account and confirm that the SHIELD server appears. Test one direct-play file and one file that requires transcoding.
- If you plan to use live TV or DVR, add a compatible digital tuner and antenna and use an account with Plex Pass, as NVIDIA lists those prerequisites. Mobile photo or movie backup also requires Plex Pass.
SHIELD server mode is convenient and power-efficient, but it is not equivalent to a dedicated NAS or unrestricted desktop server. Plex has a separate support article titled “Limitations When Running Plex Media Server on NVIDIA SHIELD.” Its published search-result text warns that some very large, high-bitrate files may require temporary free space and that transcoding performance can degrade when the transcoder is starved for memory. Check Plex’s current article against your workload before moving a large or heavily shared library to SHIELD.

Identify who will transcode
Direct play uses the client’s ability to decode the file and the television or receiver’s ability to accept the output. Transcoding shifts work to the server. If your existing server already transcodes reliably, an onn client may be sufficient. If SHIELD will be the server, test the number of simultaneous streams and the file types your household actually uses rather than relying on a generic “4K” label.
Check subtitles and audio tracks
Subtitle formats, image-based subtitles, and unsupported audio can trigger a video or audio transcode even when the picture resolution is compatible. Test a representative file with your preferred subtitles and receiver. SHIELD’s listed Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and DTS:X passthrough is an advantage only when the rest of the HDMI chain supports those formats.
Plan storage realistically
An 8GB or 16GB streaming box has limited room for apps and local data; it is not a substitute for a media library disk. SHIELD’s USB expansion helps, but a USB drive remains a separate device that needs stable power and a safe disconnect policy. Keep free space available for Plex metadata, temporary operations, and updates.
Best Value
- Memory storage capacity: 8 GB
Common problems and targeted fixes
The library appears, but playback buffers
- Check whether the session is direct playing or transcoding.
- Use Ethernet for SHIELD when Wi-Fi signal or congestion is the likely bottleneck.
- Reduce simultaneous streams or move transcoding back to a more capable PC or NAS.
- Test a lower-bitrate file to separate network limits from codec or server limits.
There is video but no receiver audio
- Verify the HDMI path and receiver input.
- Compare a standard Dolby Digital track with the lossless or DTS track.
- Confirm that the receiver and television support the selected passthrough mode.
- On onn, do not assume SHIELD’s documented passthrough formats apply; model-specific behavior was not established here.
SHIELD server becomes slow or unavailable
- Check available storage and leave room for Plex’s database and temporary work.
- Reduce concurrent transcoding jobs and test again.
- Review Plex’s current SHIELD limitations guidance, especially for very large, high-bitrate files.
- If the workload routinely exceeds SHIELD’s limits, keep the server on a PC or NAS and use SHIELD only as a client.
The onn model does not match the expected specification
Recheck the product title and storage/RAM figures on the seller’s page. Standard 4K, 4K Plus, and 4K Pro are separate listings; returning the wrong model is easier than trying to compensate for missing ports or memory later.
Price, availability, and model age
Do not treat an old cached price as a permanent advantage. Walmart listings showed changing availability for the onn devices, and the exact model intended by a generic “onn 4K” title is unclear. Compare the current local listing after selecting standard, Plus, or Pro.
NVIDIA’s North America FAQ, updated January 15, 2026, identifies SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV Pro (2019) as the products available at that time. That establishes the current product family context, not guaranteed inventory or pricing in every country. SHIELD is an established, older platform; confirm software support, warranty, and retailer stock before purchase.

A decision guide for typical Plex households
| Your situation | Best starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Plex server already runs on a NAS or PC; television uses normal HDMI audio | onn 4K or 4K Plus | Provides a Google TV Plex client; spend more only for storage or connectivity you actually need. |
| Existing server, but you need documented lossless Dolby/DTS passthrough and wired networking | SHIELD TV Pro | Those HDMI and Gigabit Ethernet capabilities are listed by NVIDIA. |
| You want the streaming box to host Plex Media Server and attach a USB library | SHIELD TV Pro | NVIDIA documents server mode, USB storage, and hardware A/V transcoding. |
| Several users will transcode demanding 4K files simultaneously | Keep the server on a capable PC or NAS; use either device as a client | SHIELD server mode has documented limitations, and no independent comparison benchmark establishes an onn advantage. |
| You are unsure which onn model a listing describes | Pause the purchase and verify the exact model | Storage, RAM, and possibly ports differ across the lineup. |
Final recommendation
For a Plex client connected to a server you already own, buy the exact onn Google TV model that meets your storage, network, and audio requirements; the standard 4K model is the basic candidate, while Plus and Pro provide more listed storage and, for Pro, more RAM. Verify current listing details because platform support alone does not establish server hosting or complete codec compatibility.
Buy SHIELD TV Pro when Plex Media Server must run on the streaming box, when USB storage and Gigabit Ethernet matter, or when your receiver needs NVIDIA’s documented Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and DTS:X passthrough. Treat its server function as a convenient low-power option with Plex-specific limits, not as a universal replacement for a dedicated NAS or desktop server.
