Neither device is a universal Plex winner. The onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box and Chromecast with Google TV (4K) can install Plex through Google Play, but whether a movie plays smoothly depends on the file’s container, video and audio codecs, bitrate, resolution, subtitle requirements, and your Plex Media Server’s ability to transcode. Chromecast has the better-documented display, audio, memory, and wireless specifications. The onn. box may be the better fit when its current price is lower and your library already matches what its Plex app can play, but the available onn. documentation does not establish a technical advantage.

Quick verdict

Choose Chromecast with Google TV (4K) when you want published specifications for 4K HDR output, Dolby Vision, HDR10/10+, HLG, Dolby audio passthrough, 2 GB of memory, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.2. Choose the onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box when you have confirmed the exact model, can accept less-documented hardware details, and its current regional price or availability is more attractive.

For Plex specifically, app availability is not the deciding factor: Plex says official Android TV and Google TV devices run its regular Android app from the Google Play Store. The deciding factor is whether each client can play your files directly and whether your server can convert files that it cannot.

Question What the evidence supports Buying implication
Does Plex work? Yes. Plex identifies Android TV and Google TV as supported platforms, and the onn. manual describes its box as a Google TV device with Play Store app installation. Both are legitimate Plex client candidates.
Will every file Direct Play? No guarantee. Plex evaluates container, bitrate, codecs, resolution, and other client capabilities. Check your library and server, not just the “4K” label.
Which has clearer 4K specifications? Chromecast with Google TV (4K): up to 4K HDR at 60 fps, Dolby Vision, HDR10/10+, HLG, and Dolby audio passthrough. Chromecast is the safer choice when HDR and audio format support matter.
Which has more transparent hardware documentation? Google publishes substantially more detail. The 2024 onn. manual identifies model 110125667 and 4K output but omits enough codec, HDR, memory, and networking detail for a full comparison. Do not assume the onn. box matches Chromecast feature for feature.

Identify the exact devices before comparing them

“Onn 4K Streaming Box” can refer to more than one product generation or package. The located 2024 manual identifies model 110125667. Confirm that model number on the box, product page, or device settings before applying any specification to your purchase. Do not silently substitute an onn. 4K Pro product or another onn. Google TV edition.

#1 Best Overall
onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box
  • Memory storage capacity: 8 GB

Google also sells separate Chromecast with Google TV variants. The relevant comparison here is Chromecast with Google TV (4K), not the HD model. Google’s documentation lists the 4K and HD products separately; an HD device should not be treated as a 4K HDR equivalent.

Model identification matters because resolution, HDR formats, memory, ports, wireless radios, bundled power equipment, and software support can vary by generation and region. Save a screenshot or copy the model number before ordering replacement hardware or troubleshooting Plex.

How Plex decides whether playback is direct

Direct Play

Plex can use Direct Play when the source file matches what the client can decode and display. Plex’s guidance names the file’s container, bitrate, codecs, and resolution as compatibility factors. A 4K television output specification therefore does not prove that a particular 4K file will play without conversion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direct Stream

When the video and audio are usable but the container or another packaging detail is not, Plex may Direct Stream. This changes the stream without fully converting the underlying media. It normally requires less server work than a complete transcode, but it is still different from untouched Direct Play.

Transcoding

If the client cannot decode the video or audio, or cannot meet another playback requirement, the Plex Media Server may transcode. Transcoding consumes server CPU or hardware-accelerator capacity and can become the limiting factor for high-bitrate or multiple simultaneous streams. A powerful server can make an otherwise imperfect client usable; a low-power server makes client compatibility more important.

Why subtitles and resolution still matter

Subtitle handling can alter the playback path, particularly when subtitles must be rendered into the video rather than delivered as a separate text track. Keep subtitle requirements in your compatibility checklist alongside resolution, bitrate, container, and codecs. Test the subtitle formats your household actually uses instead of assuming every subtitle option behaves identically.

Plex’s Smart TV format article is not a specification baseline for these products. Plex explicitly says that article does not apply to Android TV, Fire TV, Roku TV, or similar apps. Do not copy its limits onto Google TV streaming boxes.

These are published specifications, not independent Plex performance tests. No source establishes that either exact model Direct Plays a particular codec set, sustains a particular bitrate, or outperforms the other under load.

Install Plex on either Google TV device

  1. Complete the television setup. Connect the streaming box, select the correct HDMI input, pair the remote, and connect the device to your Google account and network. Exact wording can vary with software version.
  2. Open the app store. From the Google TV home screen, open the Apps area and launch Google Play Store.
  3. Search for Plex. Select the official Plex application and choose Install. Plex identifies its standard Android app as the app for supported Android TV and Google TV devices.
  4. Open Plex and sign in. Use the on-screen sign-in method offered by the current app. If your server is outside the home, confirm that remote access and account permissions are already configured.
  5. Select the server and library. Navigate to a small, representative set of files before attempting a long 4K movie. Note whether the playback screen reports Direct Play, Direct Stream, or a transcode.
  6. Check the server dashboard. While the file plays, inspect Plex Media Server’s activity view. It reveals whether the stream is direct or being converted and helps distinguish a client issue from a server-capacity issue.

If Plex does not appear in the store, verify that the device is signed into Google Play, has internet access, uses the intended model region, and is running current system software. Avoid sideloading an arbitrary APK until normal Play Store installation has been ruled out.

Compare your library before choosing

Create a short inventory of the media you expect to watch on the device. For each representative file, record:

  • Container, such as MKV or MP4.
  • Video codec and profile, including whether the file is HDR.
  • Audio codec, channel layout, and whether an AV receiver or soundbar must receive passthrough audio.
  • Resolution and frame rate.
  • Peak or average bitrate, especially for large 4K remuxes.
  • Subtitle format and whether subtitles are normally enabled.
  • Whether several household members stream at the same time.

Then ask whether your Plex Media Server can transcode those files. A server that can reliably transcode occasional incompatibilities reduces the practical difference between the boxes. If the server is a small, energy-efficient computer with limited processing headroom, prioritize a client that handles your files directly and test the most demanding titles first.

Picture and sound: where Chromecast has documented advantages

HDR output

Google lists Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG for Chromecast with Google TV (4K), with output up to 4K HDR at 60 fps. That is useful if your television supports one or more of those formats and your Plex library contains matching HDR content.

The onn. manual confirms 4K support but does not establish its HDR format list. Do not infer Dolby Vision, HDR10+, or HLG support from the word “4K.” Confirm the exact current product documentation or test the device with your display before relying on a specific HDR workflow.

Audio passthrough

Google lists Dolby audio passthrough for the 4K Chromecast. This is relevant when a receiver or soundbar should decode supported Dolby formats rather than receiving a converted stereo signal. The onn. manual located for this comparison does not provide an equivalent audio-format specification, so treat passthrough capability as unconfirmed for that model.

Display-chain checks

Regardless of the box, verify that the television, HDMI input, receiver, cables, and display settings support the format you intend to use. A client can output 4K while the television is set to an incompatible picture mode, or the receiver can limit the available HDR or audio path. These are system-level issues, not proof that Plex or the streaming box is defective.

Network and server planning

Chromecast with Google TV (4K) uses 802.11ac Wi-Fi according to Google. Ethernet is possible with a separately sold power adapter. Place the device where the Wi-Fi signal is stable, particularly if the Plex server is elsewhere on the network and you stream high-bitrate 4K files.

The located onn. manual does not provide enough networking detail to claim a wired port, Wi-Fi generation, or equivalent throughput. Check the exact package and regional listing if your installation requires Ethernet or if the device will be separated from the access point by walls or floors.

A wired connection does not fix an unsupported codec, and faster Wi-Fi does not guarantee Direct Play. Network reliability solves buffering caused by packet loss or congestion; codec incompatibility still requires Direct Stream or transcoding.

Mobile casting and remote control

Plex supports casting from its Android and iOS mobile apps to video Chromecast devices and Chromecast built-in targets. During playback, the phone acts as a remote for what is playing on the target. This is useful when you want to browse on a larger phone interface and send the selected title to the television.

Volume behavior can vary with the audio format or surround-sound setup. If the phone’s volume buttons do not change the loudness, use the television, receiver, soundbar, or streaming-device remote. Casting also does not bypass Plex compatibility rules: the target still has to play the stream, and the server may still Direct Stream or transcode.

Decision guide by household scenario

You want documented HDR and audio features

Chromecast with Google TV (4K) is the lower-uncertainty option because Google publishes its HDR formats, Dolby passthrough, memory, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth specifications. This is a documentation advantage, not a measured Plex speed advantage.

You require Ethernet

Google documents Ethernet for Chromecast through a separately sold power adapter. The located onn. manual does not establish an Ethernet feature. Confirm the onn. package’s physical ports and networking method before purchase.

You primarily cast from a phone

Both products fit the Google Cast model described by Plex: mobile Plex apps can send playback to Chromecast or Chromecast built-in targets. Choose based on display, audio, network, and support requirements rather than casting alone.

Purchase and setup checklist

  • Confirm the exact model name and model number, especially onn. model 110125667 versus another onn. 4K or Pro product.
  • Confirm that the Chromecast listing is the 4K variant, not the HD model.
  • Check current local price, stock, return terms, and warranty at the time of purchase. Prices and availability are volatile and are not established here.
  • Verify your television’s 4K, HDR, and HDMI capabilities.
  • Verify whether your receiver or soundbar needs Dolby passthrough.
  • Check Wi-Fi coverage at the television and whether you need Chromecast’s separately sold Ethernet-capable power adapter.
  • Review a few demanding Plex files and your server’s transcoding capacity.
  • After setup, test Direct Play, Direct Stream, and a known transcode case while watching the Plex server dashboard.

Troubleshooting Plex playback

The Plex app will not install

  1. Confirm the device is connected to the internet and signed into Google Play.
  2. Restart the device and check for system updates.
  3. Search for Plex from the Google Play Store rather than relying on a home-screen recommendation.
  4. Recheck the model and region if the app is still unavailable.

A movie buffers or stops

  1. Open Plex activity and identify whether the stream is Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding.
  2. If it is transcoding, check server CPU or hardware-acceleration capacity and try a lower-bitrate or better-matched file.
  3. If it is Direct Playing, test the network path, Wi-Fi signal, router load, and server storage.
  4. Repeat with a known smaller file to separate a library-compatibility problem from a general connection problem.

The picture is not HDR or 4K

Confirm that the file itself contains the expected resolution and HDR format, the television input is configured for enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI where required, and the device is connected directly or through equipment that supports the signal. The onn. manual’s 4K statement alone does not confirm a particular HDR format.

Surround sound is missing

Check the Plex audio setting, television or receiver input mode, and HDMI chain. Chromecast’s Dolby passthrough is documented; equivalent onn. audio support is not established by the located manual. Also remember that some mobile-cast volume controls behave differently with surround audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subtitles force a transcode

Try a different subtitle track or subtitle format and observe Plex activity. If the server begins converting the video when subtitles are enabled, the behavior is a compatibility path rather than proof that the device cannot play the video without subtitles.

Final buying advice

For a Plex buyer who values documented capabilities and wants 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10/10+, HLG, Dolby passthrough, 2 GB memory, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and a known Ethernet accessory, Chromecast with Google TV (4K) is the more predictable choice on paper. For a buyer focused on value, the onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box can be reasonable when the exact model is confirmed, its price is favorable, and testing shows that the household library either Direct Plays or can be transcoded by the existing server.

The correct choice is therefore conditional, not a blanket Plex ranking. Compare your files and server first, then use the published Chromecast specifications and the limited onn. model documentation to decide which uncertainty you are comfortable accepting.
