For a beginner-friendly starting point in Onmyoji Arena, choose a Samurai, Tank, or suitable Ninja for top; a Ninja or Samurai for jungle; a Mage for mid; and a Marksman paired with a Support in bottom. Those are conventions, not hard class restrictions. The live client’s lane prompt, recent adjustment information, and your team’s missing function should decide the final pick.
The lane defaults at a glance
The game presents six broad shikigami classes: Mage, Samurai, Ninja, Marksman, Tank, and Support. A class describes a kit’s general function, while a lane recommendation describes where that particular shikigami is expected to work. Treat the class as a starting clue, not a lane assignment.

This mapping is a practical beginner convention, not a promise that every member of a class belongs in that lane. The game’s underlying data keeps recommended lane and class as separate fields, and the accessible official character directory exposes class filters without displaying a complete character-by-character lane table. Confirm the current recommendation in the selection screen.
Why class and position are different
A class label compresses a shikigami’s combat identity. Mages usually offer ability damage or control; Marksmen generally scale toward repeated ranged attacks; Tanks absorb pressure or create space; Supports protect, enable, or disrupt; Samurais and Ninjas often bring close-range fighting, mobility, or burst. None of those descriptions says where the character must be played.

Lane suitability also depends on clear speed, range, resource use, cooldowns, matchups, and what the rest of the team selected. A Tank with strong wave tools may be useful outside top, while a Mage with safe ranged damage may appear in a duo lane. Such flexibility is character-specific. Do not infer a universal meta rule from one successful off-lane pick or from a class name alone.
The safest selection order is therefore: check the live lane recommendation, identify the team’s missing function, then choose a character you can execute reliably. A theoretically perfect composition is less useful than a familiar pick that can farm, rotate, and survive its lane.
Top lane: a self-sufficient fighter or durable front line
What top usually asks you to do
Top is commonly assigned to a Samurai, Tank, or a Ninja that can fight and farm without constant assistance. The lane is often isolated for long stretches, so the pick needs a plan for trading, recovering from a bad exchange, and remaining useful after the early phase. In practical terms, top rewards durability, dependable engage or dueling tools, and enough wave control to avoid being trapped under your own tower.

Top-lane selection checklist
- Solo-lane safety: Look for defensive tools, dependable escapes, or a way to punish an opponent who overextends.
- Wave control: You need to clear or thin a wave without spending every resource, especially when the jungler is elsewhere.
- Useful later: Decide whether the pick contributes frontline durability, initiation, split pressure, or reliable single-target threat.
- Matchup tolerance: Consider how the shikigami handles ranged harassment, crowd control, and an opponent who can disengage.
Common top mistakes
Choosing a character solely because its class says Tank can leave the team with a pick that clears slowly or cannot threaten the opposing laner. Conversely, selecting a fragile damage character without a safe farming plan can surrender the lane before the team’s strategy starts. If the client recommends another lane for the character, treat that prompt as a warning to verify the matchup rather than as an automatic ban.

Jungle: camps, routes, and pressure across the map
Why jungle is not a fourth lane
The conventional jungle pool is Ninjas and Samurais, but the position is defined more by tasks than by class. A jungler farms neutral camps, chooses a route, watches lane states, and converts an opening into pressure, an objective, or safe information. The role has no permanent opponent standing in front of it, so route quality and timing matter as much as mechanical damage.
Official Season 20 notes from January 2023 discussed reducing the early burden on junglers, changing monster characteristics, and supporting route choices. Those changes illustrate why a character’s class alone cannot establish efficient jungle performance: the map’s camp rules and rewards also shape the role.
Questions to ask before selecting a jungler
- Can the character clear at a practical pace? A slow first clear can cost camps, river access, and the first chance to help a lane.
- Does the route fit the kit? Mobility, sustain, crowd control, and damage to monsters determine which side of the map you can reach first.
- What does a successful visit accomplish? A gank should force a retreat, secure a takedown, burn an escape, or create time for an objective—not merely reveal your location.
- Can you recover? If an invade or failed gank goes badly, the pick needs a safe way to return to camps and remain relevant.
Why a Ninja label is not enough
In the official May 2024 balance notes, Sesshomaru was identified as a Ninja whose jungle speed was considered slow, followed by an adjustment to his monster damage. The example is useful because it separates class identity from clear efficiency. A Ninja may have the mobility and burst associated with jungle while still needing a balance change—or a particular build and route—to perform the job well.
Mid lane: central access, wave control, and timely movement
What the conventional Mage pick provides
Mages are the standard mid choice because the central lane gives ability-focused characters a short route to both sides of the map. A successful mid pick normally needs to control or safely collect the wave, threaten an opponent who steps too far forward, and move toward a river fight or side-lane play without abandoning too much farm.
Damage is only one part of the job. Reliable crowd control, vision-friendly positioning, and the ability to clear a wave before rotating can be more valuable than a higher damage tooltip that is difficult to land.

Mid-lane checklist
- Safe first minutes: Can you collect experience and gold against the expected range and poke?
- Priority potential: After clearing, can you move first to help the jungler or a side lane?
- Fight role: Are you supplying burst, sustained spell damage, zone control, or initiation?
- Positioning demands: What happens when your escape or key control spell is on cooldown?
When a Mage appears elsewhere
Lane and role can be flexible for a specific character. The May 2024 notes describe Dai Shimei as a Mage and discuss changes intended to improve his damage contribution. The same notes mention Aoandon’s prominent burst damage in the bot lane. These are patch-specific descriptions, not a universal instruction to move every Mage into bottom. Use them to understand that the character’s actual kit and the current balance environment can override a class stereotype.
Bottom lane: a partnership, not two independent picks
Marksman’s responsibility
Bottom is normally a duo lane in which a Marksman supplies sustained damage while the Support helps the pair survive, control space, and create opportunities. Marksmen are often more vulnerable early and become more valuable as items, levels, and safe attack time accumulate. The pick therefore needs a farming plan, dependable positioning, and a way to contribute before reaching its strongest point.
The May 2024 notes describe Sakura as a Marksman whose strength was more evident later and discuss raising her mid-to-late-game damage. That is an example of a scaling profile, not a current ranking or a guarantee that every Marksman should play passively.
Support’s responsibility
A Support should make the Marksman’s job possible while adding a function the composition lacks: shielding, healing, crowd control, vision pressure, peel, or initiation. The Support does not need to match the Marksman’s damage. It needs to create safe attack windows and prevent the duo from losing every trade before the carry scales.
The same 2024 notes describe Kaguya’s Support kit as providing substantial shielding. That example shows how protection can be the defining contribution of a Support, even when the character is not the team’s primary damage source.

How to evaluate the pair

A practical method for choosing between two candidates
- Confirm the live lane prompt. Open the current character-selection information and check the recommended position for the shikigami. Do not rely on an old tier list or on class alone.
- Identify the team’s missing job. Ask whether the draft lacks frontline durability, sustained damage, burst, crowd control, protection, or a way to start fights.
- Check the lane’s immediate test. Top must survive and farm alone; jungle must clear and reach useful lanes; mid must control the center and rotate; bottom must coordinate two kits.
- Compare execution difficulty with your comfort. The beginner guidance recommends starting with one role and a small character pool. Familiarity improves farming, cooldown tracking, and decision-making more than a fashionable but unfamiliar pick.
- Review recent adjustments. Look for changes to the shikigami, minions, monsters, or objectives that could alter clear speed, survivability, or timing.
- Lock the pick that performs the job consistently. If both candidates fit, prefer the one whose key abilities you can land and whose failure state you understand.
These comparison axes—position fit, team contribution, execution and comfort, and patch sensitivity—are a decision framework, not an official scoring system. They help you explain a choice without pretending that one number determines the correct pick.
How to verify changes in the live game
The official January 2023 Season 20 update added a beginner lane guide intended to provide suitable lane prompts. It also described an adjustment display showing shikigami and other battle changes released during the preceding 14 days at that time. Because those notes are historical, treat the exact interface wording and time window as version-dependent.
- Read the lane prompt on the current selection screen rather than assuming an older recommendation still applies.
- Open the game’s current adjustment or patch information and look for changes affecting your candidate, the lane’s minions, jungle monsters, or major objectives.
- Compare the stated change with the job you need: monster-damage changes affect clear timing, while shield, damage, or control changes affect team contribution.
- If the prompt and your planned composition disagree, explain the trade-off before locking in and make sure another teammate covers the missing function.
Balance examples that prevent overconfident rules
Official balance notes provide several reminders that labels are not permanent guarantees. Tanuki is a Tank, yet a Tank designation alone does not prove that every patch makes him the best top pick. Kaguya and Hana are Supports, but their value depends on the protection or utility their current kits provide. Sakura’s Marksman profile includes a later power curve, while Aoandon’s burst was discussed in connection with bot-lane use. Dai Shimei’s Mage adjustments focused on damage contribution, and Sesshomaru’s Ninja changes addressed jungle speed.
These examples should be read as evidence of character-specific and patch-specific tuning, not as a replacement for the current client recommendation. No reviewed source establishes a universal role win rate, pick rate, or other broad performance statistic. Numeric values in patch notes are balance adjustments, not population-level statistics.
Beginner practice plan by position
If you are learning top
Play a small pool of durable or fighting-oriented characters. Practice last-hitting while tracking when the opposing jungler could arrive, and learn the point at which you should give up a trade to preserve health and experience. Your first success condition is not a solo kill; it is reaching the next objective or team fight without making the map harder for your allies.

If you are learning jungle
Use one route until you understand its timing. Count your camps, watch which lanes have an opponent pushed forward, and decide what a visit is supposed to achieve before showing on the map. A clear that leaves you healthy and on time for the next decision is more valuable than a risky gank with no follow-up.
If you are learning mid
Focus on wave timing and safe movement. Before leaving lane, ask whether the wave is handled and whether your route exposes you to an avoidable ambush. Record which ability controls the wave and which one must be reserved for an enemy engage.
If you are learning bottom
Coordinate the Marksman and Support as one unit. Agree on when to contest the wave, who starts the trade, and how you retreat. The Support should communicate cooldowns and protection windows; the Marksman should protect its attack space instead of walking forward simply because a target is visible.

Common selection mistakes and fixes
- “The class decides the lane.” Fix: check the character’s current recommended position; class and lane are separate data fields.
- “A strong late-game character can ignore early requirements.” Fix: evaluate whether the pick can farm, clear, or survive long enough to reach that power curve.
- “Jungle is just another damage lane.” Fix: test camp efficiency, route timing, and the quality of pressure your kit creates.
- “Bottom has two damage dealers.” Fix: make sure one pick supplies protection, control, or initiation so the Marksman can attack safely.
- “An old patch note proves the current meta.” Fix: use historical notes to understand why roles can shift, then verify the current prompt and adjustments in game.
- “The highest theoretical pick is always best.” Fix: choose a small, practiced pool and value reliable execution.
The decision in one sentence
Start with top Samurai, Tank, or Ninja; jungle Ninja or Samurai; mid Mage; and bottom Marksman plus Support, then override that default only when the live lane prompt, the current patch, the matchup, your team’s missing function, or your own practiced strengths gives you a clear reason.
