For a straightforward beginner setup in Onmyoji Arena, use five positions: one solo top laner, one mid laner, one jungler, and a two-player bottom lane made up of a marksman and a support. The official roster lists six shikigami role labels—Mage, Samurai, Ninja, Marksman, Tank, and Support—but those labels are not the same thing as lane assignments. Check each shikigami’s recommended lane, then build a lineup that covers all five positions. Treat this as a starting framework, not a mandatory formation or proof of the current ranked meta.

The short answer: roles and lanes are different

The official Onmyoji Arena character roster describes the game as “Real Time 5v5 Battles” and provides six role filters: Mage, Samurai, Ninja, Marksman, Tank, and Support. Those are shikigami categories. They do not, by themselves, tell you where a character must be played.

Lane information is a separate classification. Community API documentation lists top, mid, jungle, support, and marksman as lane categories, with support and marksman occupying the two bottom-lane positions. A third-party beginner guide describes a common distribution of characters across those positions. Taken together, the practical rule is simple: use the role label to understand how a shikigami is categorized, but use its recommended lane when deciding where to place it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters because a shikigami can have a role tag that does not match the position a particular lineup needs. A Ninja may commonly appear in the jungle, for example, while the general lane guide also allows ninjas in top. A Samurai may be a top choice in one lineup but not fill every top-lane situation. The label is a starting point for comparison, not a fixed assignment.

What the six official role labels mean

The official roster confirms the following six labels. It does not, on the retrieved page, define detailed combat duties for each class or identify a current ranked composition.

Official role label What the roster establishes What it does not establish
Mage The shikigami is tagged as a Mage. A mandatory lane, build, matchup, or current tier.
Samurai The shikigami is tagged as a Samurai. That every Samurai belongs in top lane.
Ninja The shikigami is tagged as a Ninja. That every Ninja must jungle or that no Ninja can flex elsewhere.
Marksman The shikigami is tagged as a Marksman. That the character is automatically the best bottom-lane pick.
Tank The shikigami is tagged as a Tank. A guaranteed top-lane assignment or a required team slot.
Support The shikigami is tagged as a Support. That the character can only be played beside a Marksman.

Use this table as a vocabulary guide. If you are comparing two shikigami, first note each official role label, then separately inspect each one’s lane recommendation. The roster supports the first step; the community lane documentation supports the second.

The conventional five-position beginner formation

A common beginner arrangement divides a five-player team into four map areas, with two players sharing the bottom lane:

Position Players Common starting choices Important qualification
Top One solo player Tank, Samurai, or sometimes Ninja This is a general guide’s distribution, not a rule enforced by the roster.
Mid One solo player A strong Mage is the usual example The guide mentions alternatives; it does not define a current ranked standard.
Jungle One player Often a Ninja Other class exceptions are possible.
Bottom Two players Marksman and Support The two bottom positions are separate lane categories in the community API.

This arrangement gives a new team a clear way to avoid five players selecting the same kind of position. It is best understood as a coordination template: one player takes top, one takes mid, one takes jungle, and two players agree to share bottom as Marksman and Support.

How to assemble a team step by step

1. Start with the five positions, not five favorite characters

Before selecting specific shikigami, write down top, mid, jungle, bottom Marksman, and bottom Support. This prevents a common beginner error: choosing five characters independently and discovering at loading time that nobody planned for one of the positions.

The five-position list is a lane plan, not a demand that every character have a unique official role label. Two members can share a broad label while still filling different positions if their recommended lanes and the team’s plan support it.

2. Check each shikigami’s role label

Use the official roster filters to identify whether a candidate is listed as Mage, Samurai, Ninja, Marksman, Tank, or Support. Record the label exactly as shown. This gives your team a consistent description of its choices and makes accidental duplication easier to spot.

Do not infer more than the roster says. A role filter is not a promise about damage, durability, matchup strength, item path, or patch performance. The retrieved official page supplies categories, not a tactical handbook.

3. Check the recommended lane separately

Next, look at the shikigami’s lane recommendation. The community API documentation treats “Shikigami Roles” and “Lane” as separate data fields, which is the clearest reason not to use class labels as lane instructions.

If a character’s recommended lane is top, that is evidence for considering the character in the top slot; it is not evidence that the character must always go there. If the recommendation lists more than one lane, regard that as a potential flex option and discuss it with the team before the match.

4. Fill the bottom duo deliberately

Assign two players to bottom and decide which one is the Marksman and which one is the Support. The community lane categories name these as distinct positions even though they share a lane. A bottom pair should therefore be planned as two complementary slots, not as two interchangeable picks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a player selects a Support-tagged shikigami, confirm that the team still has a Marksman for the other bottom position. Likewise, selecting a Marksman does not fill the Support slot simply because both characters are in bottom lane.

5. Review overlaps before locking in

Count the planned positions again. You should be able to point to exactly one top player, one mid player, one jungler, one bottom Marksman, and one bottom Support. If two players are both planning the same slot, resolve that conflict before the match starts.

An overlap is not automatically wrong. It can be a deliberate flex choice when a shikigami is recommended for more than one lane and everyone agrees on the assignment. It becomes a problem when nobody has explicitly taken the missing position.

How to evaluate each position without overclaiming the meta

Top lane

The general lane guide places tanks, ninjas, or samurai in top with the solo player. That makes those labels sensible starting points when you are learning the map. It does not mean every Tank, Ninja, or Samurai is equally suitable, and it does not prove that this is the strongest arrangement on a particular patch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a beginner draft, choose one top candidate whose recommended lane includes top, then verify that moving the character there does not leave another position empty. If the character has a second recommended lane, announce the choice so the player who prefers that other lane can select something else.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Mid lane

The same guide describes a strong Mage as the usual mid example and notes that alternatives exist. The official roster’s Mage tag alone is not enough to establish a mid assignment, so check the lane recommendation as well.

When two candidates are both tagged Mage, compare their recommended lanes rather than assuming either one must be mid. One may be intended for a different position, or both may be viable flex choices. The available sources do not provide patch-specific statistics for choosing between them.

Jungle

The beginner distribution frequently uses a Ninja in the jungle, while allowing other class exceptions. Treat “often a Ninja” as a convention that helps a new team coordinate, not as a requirement.

If your selected jungler is not tagged Ninja, make the choice explicit during planning. The key check is whether the character’s lane recommendation supports jungle and whether another player has already selected that slot. There is no evidence here for a universal class restriction.

Bottom Marksman and Support

Bottom is the only position in this template that is intentionally shared. One player takes the Marksman slot and one takes Support. The official roster confirms both labels, while the community lane documentation distinguishes the two bottom categories.

Do not call the pair complete until both slots are covered. Two Marksmen leave Support unassigned; two Supports leave Marksman unassigned. If a shikigami has a flexible recommendation, decide which of the two bottom jobs it is actually filling before the match begins.

Flex picks: when an unusual assignment is reasonable

The sources support exceptions, but they do not identify which flexible picks are strongest in current ranked play. That means a flex choice should be justified by lane information and team coverage, not by claiming that it is part of the current meta.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this three-part test:

  1. Role and lane evidence: confirm the shikigami’s official role label and recommended lane.
  2. Position coverage: verify that the pick fills one of the five planned slots without deleting another.
  3. Team agreement: tell the team which lane the flexible pick will occupy before anyone locks a duplicate.

For example, a Ninja in top can be a valid variation of the conventional distribution because the general guide names Ninja among possible top choices. A non-Ninja jungler can also be considered because the guide allows class exceptions. Neither example should be presented as a guaranteed optimal strategy.

Common beginner mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake: treating role and lane as synonyms

Symptom: a player says “this is a Mage, so it must go mid,” or “this is a Ninja, so it must jungle.”

Correction: check the lane recommendation separately. The community API’s separate Role and Lane fields are specifically useful for avoiding this assumption.

Mistake: assuming every role has one fixed lane

Symptom: the team rejects a top Samurai, a top Ninja, or a non-Ninja jungler automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: use the conventional distribution as a starting point while remembering that the general guide lists alternatives and exceptions. Confirm the individual shikigami’s recommendation and communicate the plan.

Mistake: forgetting that bottom has two positions

Symptom: five players have selected characters, but nobody has agreed who is Support.

Correction: label the bottom picks separately as Marksman and Support. Sharing a lane does not mean sharing one job slot in the draft.

Mistake: calling the template the current ranked meta

Symptom: a guide or teammate presents the five-position arrangement as mandatory for every patch and mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: describe it as a common beginner template. The retrieved official roster does not establish a ranked composition, and the third-party guide is general rather than a current competitive analysis.

Mistake: selecting by class name alone

Symptom: the team chooses a character because its label sounds appropriate without checking its lane recommendation.

Correction: compare both data points. Start with the official role label, then verify the lane field and the position your team still needs.

A practical pre-match checklist

  • Have we assigned one player to top?
  • Have we assigned one player to mid?
  • Have we assigned one player to jungle?
  • Does bottom have one Marksman and one Support?
  • For every pick, have we checked the recommended lane separately from the role label?
  • Is any unusual assignment a deliberate flex choice rather than an accidental overlap?
  • Are we describing this lineup as a beginner convention rather than claiming it is the current ranked meta?

What the available sources can—and cannot—tell you

The official character page is the strongest source for the six role labels and the game’s five-versus-five format. It does not, on the retrieved page, explain tactical duties or publish a current team-composition rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The community API documentation is useful for distinguishing role fields from lane fields and for identifying top, mid, jungle, support, and marksman categories. It is community documentation rather than an official current manual.

The BlueStacks beginner guide supports the conventional distribution of top, mid, jungle, and bottom duo, including its common class examples and exceptions. It is a general guide, so it should not be read as a patch-by-patch ranked analysis.

Because these sources do not provide current pick rates, win rates, matchup charts, or patch-specific tier data, a responsible team guide should stop at the framework: identify the role, verify the lane, cover the five positions, and communicate any flex choice.

Bottom line for new players

Build your first Onmyoji Arena lineup around five positions—top, mid, jungle, bottom Marksman, and bottom Support—while treating the official six role labels as categories rather than fixed lanes. The familiar beginner arrangement uses a Tank, Samurai, or Ninja top; a Mage mid; often a Ninja in jungle; and a Marksman-Support pair bottom. Check each shikigami’s recommended lane, count the positions before locking in, and call unusual assignments deliberate flex picks. That approach gives beginners a clear structure without confusing a general template with an unverified current meta.
