The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County reports that six yellow-bellied sea snakes (Hydrophis platurus) have been collected in California, and five washed ashore during El Niño years. That is a small historical record—not proof that El Niño caused each appearance or that the species has a resident California population.
How many yellow-bellied sea snakes have been found in California?
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) reports six California collections in total, with five of the snakes washing ashore during El Niño years. NHM curator Greg Pauly describes one record during the 1972–73 El Niño, three strandings during the strong 2015–16 El Niño, and two additional snakes since then. Those are reported milestones, not a complete specimen-by-specimen chronology. NHM’s account does not establish a systematic statistical study or a complete census of every sighting.
The distinction between a collected specimen and a sighting matters: the six figure is NHM’s reported collection count, not a claim that only six people have ever seen one in California. A 1983 paper in California Fish and Game discusses four specimens from Southern California and the outer Baja California coast; because that record set includes Baja, its count should not be folded into the museum’s California total. The paper also offered a possible current-related explanation for some northern occurrences.
Why might El Niño be linked to strandings?
Yellow-bellied sea snakes are open-ocean animals. NHM says their usual range in the eastern Pacific extends from Baja California to Peru, with the species typically found near Southern California around the tip of Baja. The museum proposes that changing currents during El Niño can carry open-water species beyond their usual range. Later, cooling water, tides, and strong onshore winds may contribute to a snake becoming lethargic and washing ashore. NHM presents this as a possible explanation, not a demonstrated cause for each California record.

El Niño can alter marine conditions more broadly: the California Department of Fish and Wildlife explains that it reduces cold-water upwelling off the Americas, while emphasizing that effects are not guaranteed. That general context does not show that El Niño caused any particular sea-snake stranding.
The older 1983 paper likewise discussed possible northward transport by a warm countercurrent during warm periods, including 1972–73 and 1976–77. It is historical interpretation, and its specimen scope includes outer Baja California rather than California alone. It supports a proposed mechanism, not a definitive explanation for every record.

Where and when have they been reported?
The San Diego Natural History Museum’s atlas reports that 2015–16 sightings reached as far north as Ventura County, with additional reports in Orange and San Diego counties. The atlas entry identifies the species and labels it venomous.

NHM says California strandings are most likely from October through January, when cooling waters, lunar tides, and/or strong onshore winds may be relevant. This is the museum’s seasonal guidance, not a quantified forecast or a prediction that a stranding will occur in a given year. NHM’s account provides no probability estimate for future appearances.

Are yellow-bellied sea snakes venomous?
Yes. The San Diego Natural History Museum atlas describes Hydrophis platurus as venomous. A stranded snake may be weak or motionless, but it should not be treated as harmless.

What should you do if you find one on a California beach?
- Keep your distance; do not touch, move, or attempt to collect the snake.
- From a safe distance, take a photo if you can do so without approaching it.
- NHM asks people who encounter unusual animals to send a photo and contact information to nature@nhm.org.
