To start an online thrift store, choose a focused category and sourcing method, create a consistent process for inspecting and pricing each item, then select a sales channel that permits your inventory. Before launch, set up storage and shipping, make accurate listings, and check the legal, tax, labeling, and product-safety rules that apply where you operate. This guide is primarily for U.S. sellers; state, local, and international requirements vary.
Choose what to sell and how to source it
A thrift business resells goods it has acquired, often from individual sellers, retailers, or liquidators. Its inventory might be carefully selected vintage clothing, a narrow category of secondhand goods, or a broader mix. A defined focus makes it easier to decide what to buy, how to describe items, where to store them, and how to fulfill orders.
Pick a sourcing approach that matches the kind of shop you want to run:

This can support a distinctive, curated selection, but each item needs its own inspection, photos, description, and inventory record.
- Wholesale or liquidated goods: Buying groups of items can change how consistently you acquire stock and how much sorting is required. Inspect what you buy and account for items that may not be suitable to list.
- Discounted or dead-stock retail goods: These are not necessarily used, so do not describe them as secondhand unless that is accurate. Check the destination platform’s eligibility rules before acquiring inventory for resale.
These are different operating models, not guaranteed routes to a particular profit. No universal margin applies: acquisition costs, sale prices, fees, shipping, labor, and unsold stock all affect the result.

Build an intake and inventory routine
Use the same steps for each item before it goes live. A repeatable routine catches condition problems early and helps prevent a sold item from being misplaced.
- Inspect it. Check for wear, damage, missing parts, stains, odors, and other issues relevant to the item. Decide whether cleaning or repair is practical before spending more time or money.
- Check safety and recalls where relevant. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says its laws apply to people who sell or distribute consumer products, including thrift and consignment stores. Screen applicable goods for hazards and recalls as part of intake; the need is especially important for categories with specific safety risks.
- Record condition and identifying details. Note the item’s size, distinguishing features, flaws, and any label information you can verify. Assign it a unique stock identifier and record where it is stored.
- Decide whether to list it. Skip items that are unsafe, materially misrepresented, prohibited by your chosen channel, or not worth the preparation and fulfillment effort.
A simple inventory record can include the stock identifier, acquisition cost, condition, listing location, asking price, storage location, and order status. The format can be a spreadsheet or another system you can keep current; the important part is that each live listing maps to the exact item on hand.
Choose a channel that fits your inventory
A marketplace and a standalone online store solve different problems. A marketplace provides a listing environment and access to its shoppers, while a standalone storefront gives you a separate shop to shape but leaves you responsible for attracting customers. Shopify’s guide discusses building an online store; Etsy provides a shop setup path. Neither channel removes the need to check its current rules and fees.

When Etsy may fit
Etsy says its marketplace is for items made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller; mass-produced resale is not allowed except for limited exceptions. That makes it a possible channel for qualifying vintage or curated inventory, not a blanket option for everything found secondhand. Check current eligibility, prohibited-item rules, fees, and seller policies before buying stock specifically for an Etsy shop.
When a standalone store may fit
An independent storefront can suit a seller who wants a shop identity and is prepared to bring in visitors. Plan how people will find the store as well as how you will manage listings, payments, shipping, and returns. Compare the current terms and costs of any service before committing; do not assume a storefront automatically provides marketplace-level discovery.
Price each item with the whole transaction in mind
Start with what a comparable item can reasonably sell for, then account for the costs and work involved in completing the sale. Include the item’s acquisition cost, platform and payment charges, packaging, shipping, time spent sourcing and preparing it, and the possibility that some inventory will remain unsold. Current platform fees depend on the channel and its terms, so verify them directly before setting prices.

Do not set a price by looking only at the purchase cost or the displayed sale price. A sale that appears profitable before shipping, fees, and preparation may not be worthwhile once those costs are included. Track actual costs and completed sales so you can adjust what you source and how you price it.

Create listings buyers can assess
For a used item, the listing should help a buyer judge both what it is and what condition it is in. Photograph the actual item, including details and visible flaws, and describe size, condition, material, and brand only to the extent you can verify them. Do not use a generic image or conceal damage that could affect a purchase decision.
- Use clear photographs of the item you will ship, with close-ups of flaws or distinctive details.
- Give measurements where they help clarify fit or dimensions, and state how they were taken if that affects interpretation.
- Describe wear, repairs, missing parts, or other limitations plainly.
- Distinguish a verified label detail from an estimate; do not guess fiber content, origin, or other factual claims.
- State shipping and return terms clearly and make sure they match the rules of your channel and applicable law.
Etsy requires listing images to comply with its rules and sellers to follow its policies. Review the current requirements for whichever channel you use. The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance also advises marketplace shoppers to examine actual-item photos, descriptions, return terms, and shipping information—details that make a listing more useful to buyers.

Set up storage, packing, and shipping
Keep listed stock organized so you can retrieve the right item after a sale. Store the stock identifier with the item or its bin location, and update the record when an order is placed. Decide in advance who will pack and ship orders, what packaging is suitable, and how you will handle dispatch and returns.
If you ship orders yourself, a digital shipping scale can help you weigh parcels for shipping. It is optional: choose tools to match your order volume and workflow rather than buying equipment before you know you need it. Check the carrier and channel requirements you use for package weights, labels, and dispatch.

Check U.S. legal, tax, labeling, and safety obligations
Opening a shop on a platform does not establish that your business meets every legal requirement. Etsy says its platform does not require a business license, while also placing responsibility on sellers to comply with laws applicable to their small businesses. Your obligations depend on your location, business structure, products, and sales activity.

Business registration, permits, and taxes
There is no single permit checklist that applies to every seller. Check current state and local government guidance for business registration, licensing, sales tax, resale permits, and other requirements relevant to your circumstances. If you sell across jurisdictions or are unsure how a rule applies, consult a qualified professional.
Textile and wool labels
FTC guidance says most textile and wool products must have a label stating fiber content, country of origin, and the identity of the manufacturer or another business responsible for marketing or handling the item. FTC materials also address care labeling and truthful “Made in the USA” claims. Requirements can depend on the particular product and your role as a seller. Do not infer fiber content or origin from appearance; check the relevant FTC guidance and the product’s existing information before making a claim.
Product safety and recalls
The CPSC’s reseller resources direct sellers to screen products for hazards and recalls. Include the check in intake when it applies to the category. If you cannot establish that an item is safe and permitted to sell, do not list it while treating uncertainty as proof that it is acceptable.
Marketplace seller verification
The INFORM Consumers Act describes marketplace collection and verification duties for high-volume third-party sellers. It is not a rule that applies identically to every small seller: definitions and thresholds matter. Check the current FTC guidance and the marketplace’s seller-verification process against your own circumstances.
