Yes, you can report online sexual harassment without always revealing your identity, but anonymity depends on the reporting route. Platform reports may ask for details needed to locate or verify the content. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner accepts anonymous image-based-abuse and illegal-content reports, while its cyberbullying and adult-cyber-abuse reports require contact details. In the United States, covered platforms must remove qualifying nonconsensual intimate images—including digitally altered or AI-generated images—and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request under Section 3 of the Take It Down Act.
Start by reporting the post, account, message, or image through the service that hosts it. Before anything disappears, preserve the URL, account information, timestamps, context, and the platform’s confirmation or case number. If there are threats, stalking, extortion, or immediate danger, contact local emergency or law-enforcement services and specialist victim support while preserving evidence safely.
What counts as online sexual harassment?
Online sexual harassment includes unwanted sexual messages, sexualized insults, repeated requests for sexual contact or images, threats to publish intimate material, nonconsensual sharing of intimate images, impersonation, and campaigns that encourage others to target someone sexually. It can occur in social-media posts, direct messages, gaming chats, forums, dating services, email, group chats, or image-sharing sites.
The correct reporting route depends on what happened. A platform’s community-rules report may be the fastest way to stop an account or remove a post. A regulator or safety authority may be appropriate when the service does not respond, the reporting tool is broken, or the conduct falls under a specific legal scheme. Threats, extortion, stalking, and risks to a minor require urgent help beyond an ordinary content report.

Can you report anonymously?
“Anonymous” is not a universal setting. It describes what a particular agency or platform collects, who can see it, and whether investigators can contact you later.
Platform reports
Most services let you report a post or message from its menu without publicly identifying yourself to the harasser. The service may still request an email address, phone number, age, location, or a description of how you are affected. It may need those details to find the content, confirm that you are the person depicted, or prevent fraudulent removal requests. Read the service’s privacy explanation before submitting and provide only information that is necessary and safe.
Australia’s eSafety reporting routes
The eSafety Commissioner says image-based-abuse reports can be made anonymously. Its guidance also says illegal-content reports can be anonymous and that reports are confidential. However, cyberbullying and adult-cyber-abuse reports require your name and contact details. If you omit contact details from an image-based-abuse report, eSafety warns that it cannot ask follow-up questions or tell you the outcome.
Recommended Free Tools
eSafety can investigate serious abuse even when you do not know who is behind the account. An unknown username is therefore not a reason to abandon a report; include every identifying detail you do have, such as profile links, handles, message URLs, and dates.

U.S. intimate-image requests
The Federal Trade Commission’s TakeItDown.ftc.gov workflow lets you share as much or as little information as you choose about yourself or the person you are reporting. The covered platform may nevertheless request information needed to identify the image or validate that the request meets the law’s requirements. An anonymous submission can also make follow-up impossible, so save the confirmation before closing the report.
What evidence should you save?
Preserve evidence before blocking an account or deleting a conversation, provided doing so is lawful and does not put you at further risk. Keep an original copy in a secure location and avoid editing screenshots. Record the following:
- Exact location: the full post, message, image, video, or profile URL. Copy the URL rather than relying on a search result.
- Account details: username, display name, profile URL, user ID if visible, and any linked account names.
- Date and time: when the content was posted, received, viewed, or threatened, including your time zone.
- Conduct and wording: the exact words, threats, sexual requests, slurs, or promises to publish material. Note whether the sender contacted you directly, tagged you, or recruited others.
- Context: enough surrounding conversation to show what came before and after the offending material, without collecting unnecessary private information about bystanders.
- Reach and impact: whether the content was public, sent to a group, reposted, or used to identify your workplace, school, home, or family.
- Report records: confirmation email, receipt, reference number, case ID, screenshots of the submitted form, and any response or deadline.
Capture screenshots that show the account name, timestamp, and surrounding context. If the service displays a changing or disappearing message, photograph the screen only when lawful and safe. Keep a simple incident log with one line per event; repeated conduct is easier for a reviewer to understand when dates and links are organized chronologically.

How to report harassment through a platform
- Secure yourself first. If the sender is threatening immediate harm, knows your location, is extorting you, or is stalking you, move to a safer place and contact local emergency or law-enforcement services. Consider changing passwords and enabling multifactor authentication from a device the harasser cannot access.
- Preserve the record. Save the URL, profile details, timestamp, context, and lawful screenshots. Do this before blocking if blocking would hide the material or prevent you from copying its link.
- Use the report control attached to the content. Open the post, message, account, or image menu and choose the category closest to sexual harassment, nonconsensual intimate imagery, threats, exploitation, or impersonation. Reporting the specific item gives the service a direct location.
- Describe the violation precisely. State what happened, when it happened, whether you are depicted, whether the image is real or digitally altered, whether the sender is demanding money or more images, and whether the conduct is repeated. Avoid speculation about the person’s identity.
- Attach only necessary evidence. Follow the service’s upload instructions. Do not upload illegal child-sexual-abuse material or create additional copies of intimate content just to satisfy a form.
- Save the receipt. Record the confirmation page, email, reference number, and submission time. A receipt may be required for escalation and shows when the platform received the request.
- Use safety controls. Block or restrict the account, limit replies and direct messages, remove location information, and ask trusted people not to engage with or repost the material. Do not negotiate with an extortionist or pay to obtain deletion.
How to get a nonconsensual intimate image removed in the United States
Section 3 of the Take It Down Act covers qualifying nonconsensual intimate images on covered platforms. The FTC says this includes real images and digitally altered or AI-generated images. A covered platform must provide a clear notice-and-removal process and remove the reported image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request.
Report from the post itself when possible, or use the platform’s support page. Explain that the image was shared without your consent, identify every known location, and state whether copies or altered versions are appearing. Keep the platform’s receipt and the exact time of submission; the 48-hour period concerns a valid request received by the covered service, not the moment you first discovered the image.
If the platform has no working reporting process or does not remove qualifying material within the required period, submit a complaint at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The FTC states that violations may result in a civil penalty of $53,088 per violation (Federal Trade Commission, 2026). That penalty is an enforcement consequence for the platform, not compensation automatically paid to the person depicted.

Can StopNCII.org prevent resharing?
StopNCII.org can create a digital fingerprint, or hash, of an intimate image on your device. Participating platforms receive the fingerprint rather than the image and can use it to detect and block matching uploads. The image remains on your device during the hashing process.
This tool is useful for reducing future resharing, but it is not a substitute for reporting the original post. It cannot remove material from every website, identify the harasser, investigate threats, or guarantee that a cropped, altered, or re-recorded version will match. Use it alongside platform reports, evidence preservation, and urgent support for extortion, stalking, or danger.
Which reporting route should you choose?
| Route | Anonymity and identity | Best suited to | Response or escalation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform report | You may avoid public identification, but the service can request contact or verification details. | Removing a post, message, account, or image and stopping further contact. | Timing and outcome depend on the service; save the case number. |
| eSafety image-based-abuse report | Anonymous reports are allowed; without contact details, eSafety cannot ask questions or provide an outcome. | Image-based abuse in Australia, including cases where the perpetrator is unknown. | Confidential investigation and possible action under the Australian scheme. |
| eSafety cyberbullying or adult-cyber-abuse report | Name and contact details are required. | Relevant cyberbullying or adult-cyber-abuse complaints in Australia. | Provide proof that the service was reported, such as a receipt or reference number. |
| FTC Take It Down route | You can choose how much personal information to share, but the platform may need details to validate the request. | U.S. qualifying nonconsensual intimate images, including fake or AI-generated images. | Covered platforms must remove valid requests and known identical copies within 48 hours; report noncompliance to the FTC. |
| Police or emergency services | Identity requirements and confidentiality rules vary by jurisdiction. | Threats, stalking, extortion, immediate danger, or a minor’s safety. | Contact local services promptly; preserve evidence and follow instructions. |
Choose based on six questions: Do you need anonymity? Is the route platform-first or an escalation? What country and legal threshold apply? Does it cover text, threats, or intimate imagery? Is there a stated response time? Will you receive a case number or outcome notice?
What if you do not know who is harassing you?
Report the account and content anyway. An unknown identity does not prevent a platform from examining account records or removing material. Include the exact profile URL, handle, user ID, messages, timestamps, linked accounts, and any clues such as repeated phrases, payment details, phone numbers, or reused profile photographs. Do not attempt to hack, dox, impersonate, or publicly confront the suspected person; those actions can endanger you and compromise an investigation.

If the person is creating new accounts, maintain one incident log and add each new URL and date. Tell the platform that the behavior is coordinated or repeated and ask whether it can link the accounts. For threats, stalking, extortion, or a minor’s safety, give the same organized record to law enforcement or a specialist support organization.
What happens after you report?
A platform may remove the content, restrict the account, request more information, or decide that the material does not violate its rules. A rejection does not erase your evidence. Save the decision, appeal through the service’s stated process, and explain any missing context or repeat offenses without sending unnecessary intimate material.
Keep checking the original URLs and your confirmation inbox, but do not repeatedly open harmful content. If a qualifying U.S. intimate-image request remains unresolved after 48 hours, document the elapsed time and escalate through TakeItDown.ftc.gov. If an Australian eSafety report requires follow-up, provide the requested contact details and proof of the platform report.
Safety and privacy steps while a report is pending
- Change passwords from a trusted device and enable multifactor authentication.
- Review active sessions, connected apps, recovery email addresses, and phone numbers.
- Set accounts to private, restrict message requests, hide location data, and remove public workplace or school details.
- Tell a trusted person what is happening and agree on a check-in plan if threats are involved.
- Do not pay an extortion demand or send additional intimate material; payment rarely guarantees deletion.
- Use a separate, secure place to store evidence and avoid syncing sensitive screenshots to a shared family or work account.
Geography, deadlines, and legal limits
The FTC guidance describes U.S. federal requirements, while eSafety guidance describes Australian reporting schemes. Other countries and U.S. states may define intimate imagery, harassment, consent, intermediary duties, and evidence differently. A platform’s internal deadline may also differ from a statutory deadline. State your country when seeking legal advice and ask which law applies before relying on a 48-hour rule.
For immediate danger, threats of violence, stalking, extortion, or a child’s safety, do not wait for a platform review. Contact local emergency or law-enforcement services and a specialist victim-support organization, and preserve evidence in a way that does not expose you or anyone else to additional harm.
