To stay safer online, use a unique, strong password for every account, turn on multifactor authentication (MFA), install software updates, and verify unexpected messages before responding. Also know the safe way to use public Wi-Fi and what to do if you follow a malicious prompt. These practical steps reflect guidance from U.S. agencies; they reduce risk but cannot guarantee that an account or device will never be compromised.
Secure your accounts with unique passwords and MFA
Use a different password for every account
Create a long, random, unique password for each account and store them in a password manager rather than reusing or memorizing a small set. Reuse creates a chain risk: if one service is breached, attackers may try the same password elsewhere. CISA recommends this approach in its October 2025 online-safety poster.
Turn on multifactor authentication
MFA adds a second check beyond a password, such as a code or approval on another device. CISA explains: “MFA provides us with extra security by confirming our identities when logging in to our accounts, like entering a code texted to a phone or one generated by an authenticator app.” See CISA’s Turn On MFA guidance.
Enable MFA first on important accounts such as email, financial services, and social accounts, then on other services that offer it. Choose the strongest method the service and your devices support. In its guidance for businesses, CISA identifies physical security keys as the strongest phishing-resistant option among those discussed, places authenticator-app codes ahead of text or email codes, and notes that biometrics are usually device-specific and best used with another method. That comparison is not a guarantee that every service offers each option; check the account’s security settings and compatibility. A compatible physical key is optional—use the strongest available method if a key is not supported or practical. Details are in CISA’s MFA guidance for small and medium businesses.

Updates often include critical fixes and protections against security threats, according to the FTC’s advice on protecting personal information. CISA also includes software updates among its four everyday online-safety essentials: Secure Our World.
Recognize suspicious messages and prompts
Phishing tries to get you to reveal passwords, account or payment information, open an attachment, or install malware. Treat unexpected requests—especially urgent ones—with caution, even if they appear to come from a familiar person or organization.

A CAPTCHA is a check that asks you to complete an image- or text-based task. It should not tell you to open a system tool, run commands, or paste text into your device. In a June 2026 alert, the FTC warned that a deceptive page may instruct visitors to press Windows + R and paste a command, which can install malware. Do not follow those instructions; close the page. Use public Wi-Fi with sensible checks
Public Wi-Fi is usually safe to connect to because encryption is now widespread, according to the FTC. You do not need to treat every café, hotel, or airport network as inherently unsafe. Before entering information on a website, check for HTTPS or the lock symbol in the browser.
HTTPS protects data in transit between your device and the site; it does not prove the site is legitimate. Scammers can operate encrypted fake sites, so verify the address and use your usual account protections. The FTC explains the limits and precautions in Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know.

If you ran a command from a fake CAPTCHA
Act promptly. The FTC recommends these steps if you followed a fake CAPTCHA instruction that may have installed malware:
- Disconnect the affected device from the internet.
- Run a security scan.
- Using a different device, change passwords for accounts that may have been exposed and enable two-factor authentication.
- Report the suspected scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Changing credentials from a different device matters because malware on the affected device may have exposed them. These actions can reduce further risk, but they do not guarantee recovery or prove that no information was accessed.
