For layered Photoshop-style editing in a browser, Photopea is the closest fit among these options: its official site describes PSD opening and saving, layers, masks, and broad format support. For turning a photo into a designed graphic, Canva or Adobe Express may fit better; for an Adobe cloud-document workflow, consider Photoshop on the web. These tools serve different jobs, and vendor feature descriptions do not establish a universal ranking or guarantee that every file feature will transfer intact.
Choose an editor based on the job
| Tool | Best fit | What its official documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Photopea | Layered image editing and PSD work in a browser | Browser-based editing, layers, masks, PSD opening and saving, and a broad list of raster and vector formats. Photopea |
| Canva | Quick photo edits that become a template-led graphic | PSD upload, a photo editor, and exports including JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and SVG. Canva |
| Photoshop on the web | Editing within Adobe’s cloud-document workflow | Commonly used image-editing features, cloud documents, and a stated gap from desktop feature coverage. Adobe’s FAQ |
| Adobe Express | Creating and editing designs, photos, and videos within Adobe’s app ecosystem | Adobe describes design and media editing capabilities and integrations with Adobe apps. Its comparison with Canva is vendor-produced and reflects publicly available information as of January 2026. Adobe Express comparison |
What each option can do
Photopea: closest to a layered Photoshop-style workflow
Photopea’s official page describes cropping, resizing, layers, masks, and blending in a browser. It says the editor supports opening and saving PSD files and lists formats such as PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, WebP, SVG, PDF, AI, AVIF, HEIC, and TIFF. This makes it a practical candidate when the working file itself matters, but a format list is not a guarantee that every effect or layer in a particular PSD will behave identically.
Canva: photo editing that leads into a design
Canva says its browser photo editor accepts JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, SVG, and PSD files. Its stated export choices are JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and SVG. Canva describes the photo editor as free; Background Remover and Magic Eraser are restricted to Canva Pro, Teams, and Education. Choose it when the image is part of a broader graphic or template, rather than assuming PSD upload means a full layered-editing substitute.
Photoshop on the web: Adobe cloud documents, with limits
Adobe describes the web version as supporting commonly used image-editing features, while explicitly noting that not all desktop features are available on the web. Web documents save as cloud documents. Adobe says a Photoshop plan is required to upload and edit your own photos.

Adobe’s current FAQ lists desktop Chrome and Edge version 102 or later (64-bit), and Firefox version 111 or later, as supported browsers. Editing is available in non-mobile web browsers; mobile browsers can view and comment. Browser support and feature availability can change, so confirm the current requirements in Adobe’s Photoshop on the web FAQ before adopting it.
Adobe Express: design-led work in Adobe’s ecosystem
Adobe presents Express as a way to create and edit designs, photos, and videos, with integrations across Adobe apps. Its feature comparison with Canva is Adobe’s own comparison, not an independent evaluation; Adobe labels the information as reflecting publicly available details from January 2026 and says features may change.

A practical image workflow for web developers
- Define the task. Decide whether you need layered image correction, format conversion, or a designed graphic. Start with the workflow, not the broad label “Photoshop alternative.”
- Check the real input file. Confirm that the editor opens it and that the layers or effects you need remain usable. Photopea says it supports PSD opening and saving; Canva says PSD upload is supported. Test the actual file before depending on a feature list.
- Keep an editable source when future changes matter. Preserve the working file separately from the image intended for delivery.
- Export to a format your project accepts. Canva lists JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and SVG exports; Photopea lists JPG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and other formats. Neither source establishes one best format or compression setting for every web project.
- Validate the exported asset in the destination. Check that the file works in the project and meets its implementation requirements. This is a practical workflow check, not a vendor-tested result.
What to verify before committing
- File compatibility: A stated PSD import or export capability does not promise perfect preservation of every editable feature.
- Required tools: Canva identifies Background Remover and Magic Eraser as plan-restricted features; confirm access before building a workflow around them.
- Adobe access: Photoshop on the web requires a Photoshop plan to edit personal photos, according to Adobe.
- Device and browser: Adobe’s stated desktop browser versions and mobile limitations apply to Photoshop on the web, not to every browser editor.
- Desktop feature needs: If a task depends on a specific Photoshop desktop capability, confirm that it exists in the web version instead of assuming parity.
How to choose
- Choose Photopea when the priority is browser-based, layered editing and PSD work.
- Choose Canva when photo edits are part of a template-led design workflow and its stated formats meet the project need.
- Choose Photoshop on the web when Adobe cloud documents are central and the plan, browser, and feature limits work for you.
- Consider Adobe Express for design and media work connected to Adobe apps; treat Adobe’s comparison claims as vendor-reported.
