Before you post, pause long enough to answer five questions: Is this allowed by the community’s current rules? Is it relevant to the people reading it? Is it accurate or clearly labeled as an opinion or personal experience? Does it expose anyone’s private information? Am I being transparent about any personal or commercial interest?
If any answer is unclear, check the local rules, verify the claim, remove identifying details, disclose your connection, or wait. Good online participation is not about sounding formal; it is about making a useful contribution without creating avoidable harm.
Read the local rules before you post
Platform-wide policies are only the outer boundary. Individual communities can impose stricter rules about topics, formatting, spoilers, links, professional conduct, or promotion. Reddit’s Reddiquette puts the sequence plainly: read a community’s rules before making a submission. Stack Overflow also applies network-wide conduct expectations to everyone, while individual spaces may have additional norms.

- Confirm that your topic belongs in the community and in the selected channel or category.
- Check required tags, titles, flair, formatting, spoiler controls, and content warnings.
- Look for limits on links, surveys, recruiting, fundraising, affiliate activity, or repeated posts.
- Notice whether moderators expect sources, a minimal level of detail, or a specific question format.
- Read recent moderator decisions if the subject is sensitive or frequently disputed.
Rules and moderation practices change. Recheck them when you return to a community after a long absence or when you are posting about a high-risk subject.
What belongs in a good community post
On-topic questions with enough context
A useful question tells readers what you are trying to do, what you expected, what happened instead, and what you have already tried. Include the relevant version, device, error text, or conditions when they affect the answer, but remove secrets and personal identifiers. Put the actual question in the title rather than using a vague opener such as “Help!”
For example, “After updating the desktop app, exported files are blank; has anyone seen this with version 4.2?” gives readers a subject, symptom, and useful starting point. It is more actionable than “The app is broken.”

Clear answers and explanations
Answer the question that was asked, show the reasoning that supports your recommendation, and distinguish verified information from a guess. Link or name authoritative documentation when a claim depends on a policy, safety instruction, technical version, or changing fact. If you are unsure, say so and explain what would confirm it.
Durable communities benefit from answers that remain understandable to someone who finds them later. Define specialized terms, include relevant limitations, and identify when a solution applies only to a particular operating system, edition, region, or release.
Firsthand experience, labeled honestly
Your experience can be valuable, but it is not automatically universal evidence. Say “In my setup…” or “I encountered this on…” and provide the conditions that shaped the result. Do not present one anecdote as proof that a product, treatment, policy, or event always behaves that way.

Polite corrections and useful summaries
When a post contains an error, identify the specific claim, provide the correction, and explain the evidence without attacking the person. A later summary can help readers by recording the confirmed answer, the relevant steps, and any unresolved uncertainty. Summaries are especially useful in long discussions where the accepted solution is easy to miss.
A practical pre-publish check
Use this sequence whenever a post could affect another person’s privacy, safety, reputation, or decision-making.
- Check the destination. Open the community rules and confirm the category, channel, or tag is appropriate.
- State your purpose. Decide whether you are asking for help, sharing information, documenting an experience, correcting a claim, or inviting discussion.
- Trim the post to what readers need. Keep relevant context; remove unrelated personal history, private correspondence, access tokens, account details, and identifying information.
- Verify factual claims. Check the original announcement, official documentation, or another reliable primary source. If verification is incomplete, label the claim as unconfirmed instead of writing it as fact.
- Inspect media and links. Make sure a screenshot, recording, quotation, or headline has not been cropped or edited in a way that changes its meaning. Describe what a link contains before asking people to open it.
- Check your interests. If you benefit from a recommendation, referral, sale, affiliate relationship, employer connection, or traffic, disclose that relationship clearly.
- Read the final version as a stranger. Remove insults, sarcasm that could be misread, baiting language, and absolute claims that the evidence does not support.
Preview the post where the platform provides that option. Formatting, quoted text, attached files, and privacy settings can change what other people see.
Sharing screenshots, names, and other people’s information
A screenshot is still a publication. It can reveal a real name, username, profile photo, email address, phone number, location, workplace, private message, account identifier, or other personally identifying information. Reddit’s privacy guidance says it is not acceptable to post someone’s personal information or links to it, and its etiquette guidance specifically recommends editing screenshots to remove personally identifiable information.
Before sharing a screenshot
- Ask whether the screenshot is necessary to make your point. A text description may be enough.
- Remove names, handles, profile images, avatars, notifications, message previews, and identifiers that are not essential.
- Check every corner, browser tab, attachment, filename, and visible conversation for information outside the intended subject.
- Do not repost private messages merely because they are interesting or support your argument. Obtain consent from the people involved when their communication is not already intended for public distribution.
- Be especially cautious with health information, workplace details, children’s information, home or travel locations, and documents.
Do not assume that a public profile makes every detail fair to redistribute in a different context. Combining scattered details can make a person easier to identify or target. If you are reporting abuse or a safety issue, preserve evidence privately for the relevant moderators or authorities rather than publishing a detailed profile about the alleged offender.
Verify information and avoid deceptive media
Online communities can spread an inaccurate claim faster than a careful correction can catch up. Discord’s safety guidance says not to post or share misinformation as a whole, even as a joke, and recommends checking official resources when you are unsure. Reddit prohibits manipulated content presented to mislead and deceptive attribution.

Use a verification ladder
- Find the original source rather than relying on a repost, screenshot, clipped video, or headline.
- Check the date, location, author, and context. Old material is often recirculated as if it were current.
- Compare the claim with an official notice or primary document when one exists.
- Separate what the source says from your interpretation of it.
- If important details remain unverified, say that plainly and avoid urging others to act on the claim.
Do not use a joke label as cover for a claim that readers could reasonably take as real. Do not crop or edit a recording to imply a statement, event, or endorsement that the full material does not support. If you share altered media for analysis, label the alteration and explain what was changed.
High-risk topics require extra restraint
Unverified health advice, emergency information, civic claims, accusations, and reports that could trigger harassment deserve a higher standard. State the uncertainty, point readers toward the appropriate official resource, and avoid turning a rumor into a call for action. A confident tone is not evidence.
How to disagree without being rude
Disagreement is normal; personal attacks are not. Reddit’s short rule, “Remember the human,” is a useful test for every reply. Stack Overflow’s code of conduct similarly aims to keep participation welcoming regardless of expertise or identity.
Challenge the claim, not the person
Quote or paraphrase the exact point you are addressing, then explain the evidence or reasoning that leads you to a different conclusion. Ask a clarifying question when the wording could support more than one interpretation. “Which version and source are you using?” is more productive than “You clearly do not understand this.”
Keep the temperature down
- Replace labels and insults with specific observations.
- Do not speculate about another participant’s motives, intelligence, identity, or mental state.
- Acknowledge the part you agree with before explaining the limitation or disagreement.
- Do not pile onto a person after the point has been answered.
- Stop replying when the exchange has become circular, threatening, or abusive.
Hate speech, harassment, baiting, and coordinated dogpiling do not become acceptable because they occur during an argument. If a dispute cannot be resolved through evidence and clarification, disengagement is often the safest contribution.
Spam, self-promotion, and disclosure
A post can be technically on topic and still be unwelcome if its main purpose is to drive traffic, collect leads, sell something, or obtain referrals. Stack Overflow behavior guidance warns against overt self-promotion, and its acceptable-use policy prohibits unsolicited or undisclosed affiliate marketing and deceptive traffic generation.

When a link benefits you, disclose the relationship in plain language. Explain why the resource is relevant, summarize the useful part, and make the post worthwhile even for someone who never clicks. Do not hide promotional intent behind a fake question, repeated recommendations, or a series of nearly identical replies.
- Follow the community’s specific promotion and link rules.
- Post only when the resource directly answers the discussion.
- Disclose ownership, employment, sponsorship, affiliate status, or another material connection.
- Do not use multiple accounts or repetitive cross-posting to manufacture attention.
- Avoid clickbait titles and claims that the destination cannot support.
How expectations differ by platform and community
The same content can need a different treatment depending on the space. Evaluate five dimensions before posting.

This is a set of decision axes, not a ranking. The local rules and moderation culture control the final decision.

- Doxxing: publishing someone’s private or identifying information, or linking to it.
- Private-message reposts without consent: exposing a conversation to win an argument or entertain an audience.
- Fabricated or deceptively altered media: presenting edited material as an authentic record.
- Unverified health or civic claims: urging action on information you have not confirmed.
- Hate and harassment: attacks aimed at a person or protected group, including threats and sustained targeting.
- Repetitive cross-posting: copying the same promotion or request across communities without adapting it or checking permission.
- Clickbait: titles or previews that deliberately create a false impression.
- Hidden promotion: commercial or affiliate links whose purpose or relationship is concealed.
Deleting a post later does not guarantee that copies, notifications, quotes, or screenshots disappear. Treat publication as a deliberate disclosure, not a temporary conversation.
What to do when a conversation becomes unsafe
Do not try to win a harassment campaign through more public replies. Use the platform’s reporting tool for threats, hate, doxxing, non-consensual private information, deceptive media, or other safety violations. Discord explicitly describes reporting as important to community safety.

- Save only the evidence needed for a report, while protecting bystanders’ information.
- Report the specific message or account through the platform’s current safety or moderation flow.
- Mute, block, or leave the space if continued exposure is harming you or escalating the conflict.
- Follow up privately with moderators when additional context is necessary.
- For immediate danger, contact the appropriate local emergency or support service rather than relying on a public thread.
Reporting is not a substitute for careful posting, but it is the right response when the problem has moved beyond ordinary disagreement.

Examples of better wording
From accusation to checkable claim
Avoid: “This company is scamming everyone.”
Use: “My invoice included a charge I did not expect. Here is the relevant line with account details removed; has anyone found the published explanation for this fee?”
From rumor to transparent uncertainty
Avoid: “The new rule bans this everywhere.”
Use: “I have seen claims that the rule changed. The official notice I found applies to one jurisdiction and is dated [date shown in the source]. Can anyone confirm whether another region is covered?”
From personal attack to evidence-based disagreement
Avoid: “Only an idiot would recommend that.”
Use: “That recommendation may work for older versions, but the current documentation lists a different setting. Which version are you using?”

Avoid: a repeated product link with no explanation.
Use: “I work for the service mentioned below, so I have a financial connection. The relevant feature is documented here; if links from employees are not allowed in this community, please remove this reply.”
A compact decision rule
Post when the contribution is relevant, accurate enough for the stakes, safe to disclose, and respectful in tone. Share another person’s material only when you have permission or a legitimate public-interest reason, and remove identifying details that are not necessary. If the claim is uncertain, the relationship is undisclosed, or the likely harm outweighs the value, do not publish it yet.
Finally, check the current rules of the exact platform, community, channel, or tag before posting. Policies and moderation practices change, and etiquette that was acceptable in one space may violate another space’s expectations.
