The best online backup for a student depends on what must be protected. For one Windows or Mac computer with a large drive, Backblaze is the straightforward option: its personal plan advertises unlimited computer backup, a listed price of $9 per month, annual and two-year billing choices, and a 15-day trial. For a student with several computers, phones, a NAS, or a need for a student discount, IDrive is the more flexible candidate: its education page advertises a limited-period 50% discount after eligibility verification and coverage for PCs, Macs, Linux servers, NAS devices, and mobile devices.

Neither service should be treated as a universal winner, and cloud storage or file sync is not automatically a backup. A dependable student plan keeps the working copy on the computer, a versioned copy in the cloud, and—when the coursework matters—a separate external drive. That combination gives you a way back after a lost laptop, accidental deletion, ransomware, or a school-account change.

Use the decision process below to match coverage, storage, recovery speed, account ownership, and renewal terms to your actual college setup.

Start with a map of your college data

Before comparing providers, list where your files actually live. A backup that covers only a laptop will not protect photos on a phone, a design project on an external SSD, or files inside a school-managed account.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Devices: record every Windows PC, Mac, Linux system, phone, tablet, NAS, and external drive that contains irreplaceable work. Check the operating-system version before installing any client.
  • Accounts: separate personal accounts from Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace accounts issued by your school. An administrator may control retention, access, and whether a third-party backup is permitted.
  • Data volume: estimate the size of documents, source code, media, virtual machines, and research datasets. Unlimited computer backup and a fixed storage allowance solve different problems.
  • Recovery needs: decide whether you need one deleted file, an older version from before a ransomware change, or a complete replacement computer. Also consider whether your campus connection can download the whole backup.
  • Ownership and renewal: identify who owns the account and what happens when you graduate, lose a student email address, or stop paying for a plan.

This inventory prevents the most common mistake: paying for “cloud storage” while leaving a second device or an important account outside the protection boundary.

Cloud storage and sync are not the same as backup

File-sync services are designed to make a current file available on several devices. If a folder is synchronized, an accidental deletion or an encrypted file can propagate to the other copies. A backup service instead sends copies to an off-site repository and, when version retention is available, lets you return to an earlier state. IDrive describes this distinction in its support documentation; its service advertises up to 30 prior versions and point-in-time snapshots, but those are IDrive-specific features, not a universal property of cloud storage.

Google Drive, OneDrive, and a school file portal can still be useful for collaboration and convenience. Treat them as a backup only after you verify the account’s retention, version history, recovery window, administrator controls, and the ability to export files independently of the school. A synchronized folder with no usable historical versions is not a substitute for a separate backup.

“Cloud backup copies the data on your computers, phones, servers, and NAS devices to secure off-site data centers over the internet, so a second copy exists somewhere your own hardware can’t take down with it.” — IDrive’s official explanation in its support materials

Build a student-friendly 3-2-1 plan

The 3-2-1 rule is a practical structure rather than a product requirement: keep three copies of important data, on two types of media, with one copy off-site. For a student, the layers can be:

  1. Working copy: the files on your laptop or desktop.
  2. Cloud copy: a versioned online backup that can be reached after theft, hardware failure, or a campus outage.
  3. Local copy: an external USB hard drive or SSD stored separately from the computer.

The external drive is a companion, not a replacement for off-site backup. Match its capacity to the data you intend to copy and confirm that your computer has a compatible port or adapter. Keep it in a different location when it is not being updated so a single theft or accident does not remove every copy.

Student backup options compared

Option Best fit and device scope Storage model Recovery features Published price or offer
IDrive Students needing coverage beyond one computer; the education page lists PC, Mac, Linux server, NAS, and mobile backup. Fixed storage allowance selected with the plan; the exact allowance is not stated on the cited education page. Point-in-time recovery; the support material describes up to 30 prior versions. AES 256-bit encryption and an optional private key are vendor claims. Limited-period 50% education discount for eligible students, educational institutions, and people with a valid education-domain email address. Eligibility verification is required; offer duration and renewal pricing are not established.
Backblaze Personal One or more personal computers where simple computer backup is the priority; the cited page describes computer backup rather than a broad school-account service. Unlimited storage for computer backup. Download through the web, access through iOS and Android apps, or request a mailed hard drive for a fee that is refunded when the drive is returned. $9 per month listed on the personal page, with annual and two-year billing choices and a 15-day trial. The page was checked on October 13, 2026; verify current terms.
External USB hard drive or SSD A local companion copy for a laptop or desktop; capacity and port compatibility must match your equipment. Capacity is limited by the drive you buy. Fast local access when the drive is available; it does not provide off-site protection by itself. Price varies by capacity and model; the cited source establishes the category but no model or price.

TechRadar Pro’s 2026 comparison places IDrive first overall and characterizes OneDrive as more cloud storage than comprehensive backup. That is editorial judgment, not a student-specific test or a universal ranking. Use the table’s coverage and recovery differences rather than a single “best” label.

IDrive: broad coverage and an education offer

What the student offer includes

IDrive advertises a limited-period 50% discount for students, educational institutions, and users with a valid education-domain email address on its education offer page. You must verify eligibility. The page does not establish how long the discount lasts or what the price becomes at renewal, so record the renewal amount and cancellation conditions before committing.

Why multi-device students may prefer it

The education page lists backup for PCs, Macs, Linux servers, NAS devices, and mobile devices. That breadth is useful when a student spreads work across a laptop, phone photos, a home desktop, and an external storage device. The same page advertises point-in-time recovery, AES 256-bit encryption, and an optional private key. These are vendor claims; they do not constitute an independent security audit or hands-on student testing.

School Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace accounts

IDrive lists separate cloud-application backup options for Microsoft Office 365 and Google Workspace. A student should confirm three things before relying on them: whether the school account can be backed up independently, whether institutional policy permits it, and whether the product is sold to an individual rather than only to an organization. The cited pages do not resolve those conditions. Keep a personal export of work you are allowed to retain, and do not copy restricted institutional data to a personal account without permission.

Backblaze: simple unlimited computer backup

Plan and billing

Backblaze’s personal page lists Computer Backup at $9 monthly, with annual and two-year billing choices, unlimited storage, and a 15-day trial. Those figures are time-sensitive vendor-page claims checked on October 13, 2026. Confirm the current price, what each billing term includes, renewal pricing, and cancellation rules before starting the trial.

Recovery paths

The service describes downloading files from the web and accessing them through iOS and Android apps. It also describes mailing a hard drive for a fee that is refunded when the drive is returned. A physical restore can be useful when a laptop was lost or a large media library would take too long to download over campus internet. The current fee, shipping conditions, and actual delivery time should be checked when you request a restore.

Where it may not be enough

Unlimited computer backup does not automatically mean unlimited protection for every phone, NAS, school account, or external drive. Confirm the exact devices and folders covered by the personal product. If your coursework is distributed across several device types, compare the resulting gaps with a broader service or add a separate local copy.

How to set up a college backup plan

  1. Inventory and classify. Make a list of devices and accounts, then mark files as essential coursework, personal records, replaceable media, or restricted school data. This determines what must be backed up and what cannot be moved to a personal service.
  2. Measure the first backup. Check the size of the folders you intend to protect and the free space on any local drive. Include large video, photo, engineering, architecture, or virtual-machine folders rather than assuming documents are the whole workload.
  3. Choose the coverage model. Select an unlimited-computer plan when one or more computers are the main target and the data volume is unpredictable. Select a fixed-capacity, multi-device plan when phones, NAS storage, or several operating systems matter and the allowance is sufficient.
  4. Verify eligibility and renewal terms. For the IDrive education offer, complete the education-domain verification and capture the displayed renewal price. For Backblaze, compare monthly, annual, and two-year billing and note the trial end date.
  5. Install the official client and select folders deliberately. Use the provider’s current application for your operating system. Confirm that coursework, project repositories, photos, and any external-drive folders are included; do not assume every mounted volume is selected automatically.
  6. Configure version retention or snapshots. Keep historical versions where the service offers them. A current copy alone cannot repair a file that was silently corrupted or encrypted days earlier.
  7. Protect the account. Use a unique password, enable any available multi-factor authentication, and store recovery codes somewhere other than the laptop being backed up. If you choose a private encryption key, preserve it in a secure offline location; losing it can make recovery impossible.
  8. Create the local layer. Copy the same irreplaceable folders to a separate USB hard drive or SSD. Match capacity to the data set and disconnect or relocate the drive when the copy is complete.
  9. Run a restore test. Restore one recent document, one older version, and a representative photo or project folder to a different location. Open each file and confirm that names, dates, and folder structure are usable.
  10. Schedule maintenance. Review the device list each term, after changing laptops, and before graduation. Remove retired devices only after confirming that their files exist in another copy.

Recovery playbooks for common student emergencies

Laptop lost or stolen

Use a replacement computer, sign in to the backup account, and restore the most important coursework first. Prioritize current assignments, source code, identity documents, and application configuration. If the dataset is too large for a reliable campus download, ask whether the service’s physical-drive recovery is available; Backblaze describes this option, including a refundable return fee, on its personal page.

Accidental deletion

Stop editing the affected folder so a synchronization service does not propagate further changes. Open the backup’s historical-version or point-in-time recovery view, select a copy dated before the deletion, and restore it to a new folder. Compare the restored file with any local draft before replacing the working copy.

Ransomware or mass file changes

Disconnect the affected computer from the network, then use a clean device to access an older backup version or snapshot. Do not overwrite the only remaining copy with files from the compromised machine. After restoring, update the operating system and applications and change account credentials from the clean device.

Slow or unreliable internet

Start the initial upload on a stable connection and leave the computer powered and connected according to the service’s client requirements. For a full restore, prioritize essential folders or use a physical-drive recovery option where available. Test a small restore before an emergency so you know how long a typical download takes.

School account disabled or graduation approaching

Ask the institution what export and retention rights you have before your account ends. Move permitted personal work to an account you control and include it in your normal backup set. Do not copy material classified as institutional, confidential, or restricted without written authorization.

Security and privacy checks

  • Encryption claim: IDrive’s education page advertises AES 256-bit encryption and an optional private key. Treat that as a vendor statement, not proof of an independent audit.
  • Key custody: A private key improves control only if you can preserve it. Store a recovery copy separately from the computer and label it clearly.
  • Account separation: Keep personal and school identities distinct. A school administrator may be able to suspend, reset, or access an institution-managed account.
  • Least-data principle: Back up what you are allowed to retain. Exclude caches, build artifacts, and duplicate downloads when they add cost or restore time without protecting original work.
  • Restore privacy: A restored archive may contain tax forms, health records, or other sensitive files. Use a private device and remove temporary copies when the recovery is complete.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • “My synced folder is my backup.” Check for independent version history and retention. If a deletion appears everywhere immediately, add a real backup with historical copies.
  • Backing up only the laptop. Add phones, NAS storage, and external drives that contain unique work, or document why they are intentionally excluded.
  • Choosing by discount alone. Compare the post-discount renewal price, storage model, supported devices, and restore method. A cheap plan that omits your main device is not economical.
  • Never testing recovery. Restore sample files each term. A successful upload does not prove that permissions, versions, or folder structure will be usable when you need them.
  • Leaving the external drive permanently attached. Keep the local copy separate when practical so a single malware event or accident cannot affect both the computer and the drive.
  • Assuming a school email guarantees a benefit. IDrive requires eligibility verification, and the education page does not establish offer duration or renewal pricing. Confirm those details at checkout.
  • Ignoring account boundaries. A school-managed Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace account may not be independently backup-able, and policy may prohibit personal copies. Ask the institution first.

Which setup fits your situation?

One laptop, lots of media, and a preference for simple billing

Start with the Backblaze personal computer-backup plan if its supported operating system and folder scope match your needs. Its listed unlimited storage removes the need to predict the size of a growing photo or video library. Add an external drive for a local recovery copy.

Several devices and a verified education-domain email

Evaluate IDrive’s education offer. Its listed PC, Mac, Linux server, NAS, and mobile coverage can reduce the number of separate services you maintain. Confirm the allowance, the discounted term, renewal price, and whether every device you own is included.

School files are the main concern

First determine what the institution already retains and what you are allowed to export. Do not assume that a school Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 account can be placed into an individual backup plan. Keep an authorized personal copy of coursework and back it up under your own account before access changes.

Internet access is limited

Use cloud backup for off-site protection, but plan a local external-drive copy and identify the physical-restore process before you need it. Backblaze describes a mailed-drive option; confirm its current fee and return requirements.

Final checklist before the semester gets busy

  • Every device containing unique data appears in your inventory.
  • The backup client is running and the intended folders are selected.
  • Historical versions or snapshots are enabled where offered.
  • Your account password, multi-factor method, and any private key are recoverable.
  • A separate external drive contains a recent copy.
  • You have restored and opened representative files.
  • You know the plan’s trial end, renewal price, cancellation rule, and school-account limits.

For most students, the practical answer is a layered plan rather than a single brand: choose IDrive when verified education pricing and multi-device coverage fit, choose Backblaze when unlimited computer backup is the priority, and add a separate external drive either way. Recheck prices, eligibility, and product scope before paying because the cited vendor terms can change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google Drive or OneDrive enough to protect my coursework?

Only if you have verified independent version history, retention, recovery access, and account ownership. A synchronized folder can propagate deletions or ransomware changes, so keep a separate versioned backup.

Does a school email automatically qualify me for a backup discount?

No. IDrive’s education offer requires eligibility verification and does not establish how long the discount lasts or what renewal will cost. Confirm both before purchase.

Can I back up my school’s Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace account as an individual?

The available pages do not establish that every student can do so. Check institutional policy, administrator permissions, and whether the product accepts individual accounts before backing up school data.

What should I do if downloading my entire backup would take too long?

Restore the most important folders first, and check whether a physical-drive recovery option is available. Backblaze describes mailing a drive for a fee refunded when it is returned; verify the current fee and delivery terms.
