Onion over VPN means connecting to a VPN first and then using Tor. It is not required to visit an onion site, and Tor Project generally advises against combining a VPN with Tor unless you are an advanced user who knows how to configure both without compromising privacy. For most people, the straightforward way to reach an onion service is to use Tor Browser and the service’s verified onion address.
What “onion over VPN” means
The phrase describes a sequence: your device connects to a VPN, then traffic from Tor Browser travels through Tor. The VPN is a separate service; Tor routes traffic through a volunteer-operated relay network. They create different paths and trust relationships, not a single all-purpose privacy shield.
For ordinary Tor circuits used to reach public websites, Tor describes a guard (entry) relay, a middle relay, and an exit relay. An onion-service connection stays within Tor rather than using a public exit relay to reach that service. A VPN adds a party that can observe your connection to the VPN; what the provider can learn or retain depends on its implementation and policies. Tor Project does not promise that a VPN makes Tor users untraceable or hides the fact that they are using Tor. Tor Project’s VPN guidance cautions that combining the two can reduce anonymity or undermine Tor protections if misconfigured.
Should you use a VPN with Tor?
For most readers, no. Tor Project says, “Generally speaking, we don’t recommend using a VPN with Tor unless you’re an advanced user who knows how to configure both in a way that doesn’t compromise your privacy.” A VPN may be useful for a separate goal, such as changing apparent location to address a geolocation restriction, but that is not the same as gaining Tor’s privacy properties. The right choice depends on what you need, which observer you are concerned about, and how your traffic is configured.

| Option | What it is suited to | Scope and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Tor Browser alone | Browsing the web over Tor and reaching onion services | Covers traffic sent through Tor Browser. A VPN is not a prerequisite for onion services. |
| VPN alone | A VPN-based network route, which may help with location restrictions | Does not provide Tor’s relay-based privacy properties. |
| VPN followed by Tor | A specialized setup for users who understand the configuration and their threat model | Adds configuration complexity and another party in the connection path; Tor Project does not recommend routine use. |
| Tails | People who need broader system traffic routed through Tor | Tor Project points to Tails for this use; it can be started from USB or DVD. It is a separate operating system, not a Tor Browser setting. |
How to access an onion site safely
- Get Tor Browser from the Tor Project. Use Tor Browser for web browsing over Tor rather than routing an ordinary browser through Tor. Tor Browser includes privacy protections that other browsers may lack.
- Find the service’s current onion address through a trusted channel. Prefer the organization that runs the service or another source you trust, then check the entire address carefully. Current onion addresses have 56 letters and numbers followed by
.onion. Older 16-character v2 addresses no longer work on today’s Tor network. Tor Project’s onion-service guidance explains the address format and connection indicators. - Open the address in Tor Browser. Check the URL bar and onion indicator to confirm the connection is using an onion service. The indicator does not prove that the service is the organization you intended; verifying where you got the address remains important.
An onion-service connection is end-to-end encrypted between the Tor user and the service. That does not make every action anonymous: a service can still identify you if you provide identifying details or sign in to an account tied to you.
What Tor Browser does—and does not—protect
Tor Browser routes the traffic you send through it. It does not automatically route every app on your computer or phone through Tor. Tor Project warns that other browsers can expose information through DNS or WebRTC, browser fingerprinting, cookies, or cache, which is why it recommends Tor Browser for web browsing over Tor. Tor Browser support covers its role and protections.

If your goal is to route broader system traffic through Tor, Tor Project points to Tails, which can be started from a USB drive or DVD. Tails is an option for system-wide routing; Tor Browser by itself is not. Tails’ Tor documentation describes the distinction.

Habits that can undermine privacy
- Do not use torrents over Tor. Torrent applications can make connections outside the browser and expose identifying information.
- Avoid browser plugins. Plugins may make direct connections or reveal details that weaken Tor Browser’s protections.
- Be careful with downloaded documents. Opening them in an external application while online can cause connections outside Tor and reveal information.
- Do not identify yourself if anonymity from the site matters. Logging into a personal account or sharing identifying details can connect your activity to you, regardless of the network route.
- Do not treat the onion indicator as proof of identity. It indicates an onion-service connection, not that the address belongs to the intended organization.
