For one phone that also handles everyday tasks, the OnePlus 15 Series is the more balanced choice. For the lowest-risk competitive setup, long gaming sessions, physical controls and active cooling, the ASUS ROG Phone 9 is the better fit. Neither manufacturer has published an independent, head-to-head end-to-end latency test, so specifications such as 3,200Hz or 720Hz touch sampling cannot prove a universal winner.
What “low latency” actually means on a phone
Latency is the time between your finger movement and the game showing the resulting action. It is an end-to-end chain, not a single specification:
- Touch capture: the digitizer detects a tap, swipe or hold.
- Input delivery: the operating system and game receive that event.
- Game processing: the CPU and GPU calculate the next state.
- Frame submission: the finished frame is sent to the display pipeline.
- Display scan-out: the panel refreshes and your eyes see the change.
- Network response: in online games, server and connection delay can add more time.
Qualcomm gaming engineer Dave Durnil notes that touch latency depends on factors including display-vsync timing and frame submission, not just the touch sensor’s sampling figure. See the historical Snapdragon 888 explanation at Qualcomm’s gaming latency article.

Why polling numbers are easy to misread
A touch-sampling rate describes how often a panel can check for input under stated conditions. “Instantaneous sampling” can describe a burst or special mode rather than the sustained rate used in every game. Refresh rate describes how often the display can present a new image; it does not guarantee that a game renders at that rate. A phone can therefore advertise a very high touch figure while still having additional delay in game processing, frame pacing, software scheduling or the network.

Use the figures below to understand each company’s design priorities, not to calculate a precise millisecond advantage.
OnePlus 15 Series versus ASUS ROG Phone 9
| Area | OnePlus 15 Series | ASUS ROG Phone 9 | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display and gaming refresh | OnePlus reports a 165Hz display with native 165fps support. | ASUS lists up to 185Hz through Game Genie while playing mobile games. | These maximum modes have different conditions. A game must support the selected frame rate. |
| Touch figures | 330Hz touch sampling and 3,200Hz instantaneous sampling, according to OnePlus. | 720Hz touch sampling, according to ASUS. | The vendors do not publish matching definitions or test methods, so the numbers are not directly comparable. |
| Gaming software | OP Gaming Core and OP FPS Max are part of OnePlus’s announced gaming architecture. | Game Genie provides in-game controls and performance options. | Actual benefits depend on the game, software build and region. |
| Thermal design | OnePlus claims improved thermal management and stability through its gaming stack. | GameCool 9, a larger graphite sheet and an optional AeroActive Cooler X Pro are documented. | OnePlus’s statements are design claims; ASUS’s percentages are ASUS lab results, not independent comparisons. |
| Physical controls | No comparable physical trigger accessory is established in the cited OnePlus material. | AirTrigger controls are built in. The optional cooler adds two physical buttons; the ROG Tessen is a separate controller. | ROG is the stronger fit if shoulder-style inputs matter. |
| Independent latency evidence | No independent comparison with ROG Phone 9 is provided. | No independent comparison with OnePlus 15 is provided. | There is no defensible universal latency winner from these sources. |
What OnePlus brings to gaming
In its November 10, 2025 announcement, OnePlus describes the OnePlus 15 Series gaming architecture as a combination of display, touch and software features. The company says the phone can run a 165Hz display with native 165fps support. That gives compatible games a high ceiling for animation smoothness, but it does not force every title to render at 165 frames per second.
Touch and frame-processing claims
OnePlus reports 330Hz touch sampling and 3,200Hz instantaneous sampling. Treat the latter as a company-defined peak or burst figure, not as a rate that can be compared directly with ASUS’s 720Hz figure. OnePlus also reports up to a 22.74% reduction in CPU instructions for key tasks and an 80% improvement in per-frame rendering efficiency. Both are OnePlus’s internal performance figures; the announcement does not provide the independent test conditions needed to rank the phone against ROG Phone 9.
OP Gaming Core and OP FPS Max
OP Gaming Core is intended to coordinate resources for games, while OP FPS Max targets frame-rate stability. Those features may matter more in a long match than a headline touch number because uneven frame delivery can make controls feel inconsistent. The available announcement does not establish a standardized, independent sustained-load result, so consider these as architecture claims rather than measured proof.
Software and regional limits
An older OnePlus Android 13 system guide describes gaming-performance modes and touch-sensitivity controls, and warns that some Games features vary by country or area. It predates the OnePlus 15 Series and should not be treated as a menu map for every current OxygenOS release. Confirm the controls shown on your specific phone and software version before relying on them in competition.

What makes the ROG Phone 9 a dedicated gaming phone
The ASUS ROG Phone 9 product page documents a gaming-first package built around the Snapdragon 8 Elite platform, GameCool 9 thermal design, AirTrigger controls and Game Genie software.
Game Genie and 185Hz mode
ASUS lists a refresh rate of up to 185Hz through Game Genie while playing mobile games, with 720Hz touch sampling. The 185Hz figure is explicitly conditioned on Game Genie use during mobile gameplay. It is therefore not an always-on desktop or system-wide refresh mode, and the game itself must support a useful frame rate.
Cooling for sustained sessions
ASUS says the ROG Phone 9’s graphite-sheet volume is 57% larger and cooling performance is 12% better than its stated prior design. It also claims that the AeroActive Cooler X Pro can provide up to 29% more effective cooling than the AeroActive Cooler X. ASUS labels these as laboratory results whose real-world performance depends on conditions. They indicate cooling emphasis, not an independently measured advantage over OnePlus.
AirTrigger and accessories
AirTrigger gives the phone integrated touch-sensitive controls that can be mapped to game actions. ASUS lists the AeroActive Cooler X Pro as optional for standard ROG Phone 9 and 9 Pro models; it is included only with the Phone 9 Edition. The cooler adds two physical buttons. The ROG Tessen is another optional controller, and you should check device fit and case clearance before buying it. Package contents and accessory availability vary by market.
Which phone fits your type of player?
Choose OnePlus when you need one balanced phone
- You want a flagship-style daily phone with a serious gaming mode rather than a visibly gaming-focused design.
- Your games benefit from high refresh and stable frame pacing, but you do not need shoulder controls.
- You prefer not to carry a cooler or controller for ordinary sessions.
- The OnePlus 15 Series is officially available through your carrier or region and supports your required bands.
The evidence supports OnePlus as the balanced proposition, not as a proven latency champion. Its 165Hz, 330Hz and 3,200Hz claims describe the announced hardware; they do not establish an end-to-end result against ROG Phone 9.

Choose ROG Phone 9 when controls and endurance dominate
- You play shooters, battle-royale games or racing titles where mapped shoulder inputs are valuable.
- You regularly play long sessions and want a documented cooling ecosystem.
- You are comfortable with a gaming-oriented phone and potentially buying an external cooler or controller.
- You will use Game Genie and games that can take advantage of high refresh rates.
ROG is the more purpose-built choice because AirTrigger, GameCool 9 and the cooler ecosystem address gaming ergonomics and sustained operation directly. That still does not amount to a measured latency victory over OnePlus.

If your main problem is high ping, unstable Wi-Fi or a game server far from your location, changing phones may not solve it. If your title is capped at 60 or 90fps, a 165Hz or 185Hz panel cannot create additional game frames. Check the game’s frame-rate options, account region and device compatibility before paying for a higher specification.
How to configure either phone for the lowest practical latency
- Update the phone and game. Install the latest stable system and game versions available for your region. Reboot after major updates so background optimization can finish.
- Select the game’s highest supported frame-rate mode. Do this inside the game first; the phone cannot render frames the title does not request.
- Use the phone’s gaming panel. On ROG Phone 9, open Game Genie during a match and select the available performance and refresh options. On OnePlus, open the built-in Games feature and use the performance or touch-sensitivity controls shown by your current OxygenOS build; menu names vary by version and region.
- Reduce background work. Close downloads, cloud backups, screen recording and overlays that compete for CPU, GPU or network time. Keep notifications from interrupting a match.
- Keep the display in a fixed high-refresh mode when appropriate. Adaptive switching can save battery, but a fixed mode may provide more predictable behavior in a supported game. Check battery and temperature after changing it.
- Use a strong local connection. Prefer a nearby 5GHz or 6GHz Wi-Fi access point with a clear signal, or a reliable 5G connection. Avoid playing beside a congested router or while another device is saturating the upload.
- Control heat. Remove a thick case if it traps heat, keep vents unobstructed and lower graphics quality before the phone begins throttling. A cooler can help on compatible ROG models; it is an accessory, not a guarantee of lower input latency.
- Test the exact game and settings. Record frame-rate stability, touch behavior and network ping in a repeatable training area before changing several settings at once.
How to test your own phone without overclaiming
A useful comparison keeps the game, account, network and graphics settings constant. Test both phones at the same brightness, resolution mode, frame-rate target and temperature. Play the same repeatable sequence for several minutes after the phones reach a similar starting temperature.
- Record the game’s displayed frame rate and note drops, stutter or uneven frame pacing.
- Check whether the game actually offers 120fps, 144fps, 165fps or another mode on each device.
- Compare the consistency of a repeated swipe, aim movement or button press rather than relying on how a single tap feels.
- Measure online ping separately from touch response; a fast local input path cannot remove server delay.
- Repeat after a long session. A phone that feels fast for five minutes but throttles later may be worse for your use than one with a lower peak.
Do not turn an informal phone-to-phone impression into a millisecond claim. A proper end-to-end measurement requires synchronized high-speed capture and controlled software and network conditions, none of which are supplied by the manufacturers’ headline specifications.

Mistake: treating 3,200Hz and 720Hz as directly comparable
Fix: keep the vendor definitions attached to the figures. OnePlus calls its number “instantaneous sampling”; ASUS lists touch sampling. Without identical test methods, the values cannot produce a ranking.

Mistake: assuming the highest refresh mode works everywhere
Fix: verify the game’s own frame-rate menu. OnePlus describes support as something it intends to expand, while ASUS limits its 185Hz statement to Game Genie during mobile games.
Mistake: using an old OnePlus menu guide as a current universal manual
Fix: treat the Android 13 guide as historical reference only. Current OxygenOS labels, available modes and regional features may differ.
Mistake: comparing laboratory percentages as if they were common benchmarks
Fix: retain the publisher and conditions. OnePlus’s 22.74% and 80% figures and ASUS’s 57%, 12% and 29% cooling figures are company-reported results, not independent cross-device measurements.
Mistake: ignoring accessory and package differences
Fix: confirm whether an AeroActive Cooler X Pro is included with the exact ROG Phone 9 edition you are buying. Standard Phone 9 and 9 Pro packages do not include it according to ASUS; the Phone 9 Edition does. Check local stock, price, carrier compatibility and return terms before ordering any phone or accessory.

The cited manufacturer pages do not establish live regional prices, inventory, carrier compatibility or software-support duration. Bottom line for low-latency gaming
Pick the OnePlus 15 Series if you want high-refresh gaming in a phone that remains a balanced everyday device. Pick the ASUS ROG Phone 9 if integrated AirTrigger controls, Game Genie tuning, sustained cooling and optional gaming accessories are worth prioritizing. The available evidence cannot prove that either phone has lower end-to-end latency in every game. Your game’s frame-rate support, thermal behavior, network quality and comfort over a full session matter more than choosing the largest sampling number.
