The Samsung Galaxy S25 series has the longer published support commitment in this comparison: seven generations of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. The OnePlus 13 has a six-year security-support period, ending 7 January 2031, and a reported clarification of four Android version upgrades beyond the Android 15 version installed at launch.

That answer applies to these specific flagship generations, not to Samsung and OnePlus phones as undifferentiated brands. Support terms vary substantially by model, region, carrier and product tier, so separate the major Android-upgrade promise from the security-update period before deciding which phone will age better.

What “longer software support” actually measures

A phone can remain usable after its last major Android release, but the type and duration of support matter. Compare two separate clocks:

Major Android and interface upgrades

An OS upgrade changes the Android version and usually brings new system features, permission controls, compatibility behavior and manufacturer interface changes. Samsung describes its S25 commitment as seven generations of OS upgrades. OnePlus’ detailed count is different: a clarification reported by Droid Life says the OnePlus 13 receives four Android version upgrades beyond the Android 15 build that ships on the phone.

  • MORE POWER TO YOU: Reimagine what’s possible with the Galaxy S25+, featuring our most powerful processor yet. Effortlessly translate your calls, slow down a video, or edit your photos without skipping a beat.

Those numbers are not directly interchangeable unless you establish the starting version. A phone that launches with Android 15 has already received its first installed build; “four upgrades beyond Android 15” means four later Android-version changes, not four upgrades including Android 15.

Security updates

Security updates patch newly discovered vulnerabilities and can continue after major Android upgrades stop. They are essential for a phone used for banking, authentication, work accounts and private communications. A published security period is an eligibility window, not a promise that every device receives every patch on the same day or at the same frequency worldwide.

When the support clock starts

Neither policy starts when you personally buy the phone. Samsung states the S25 period runs from global launch. OnePlus’ UK product declaration gives the OnePlus 13 a defined security-support period ending on 7 January 2031. Check the stated launch or support date for the exact model instead of calculating from your receipt date.

Galaxy S25 and OnePlus 13 support commitments compared

Phone Major OS-upgrade commitment Security-support commitment Starting point or end date Important qualification
Samsung Galaxy S25 series Seven generations of OS upgrades Seven years of security updates From global launch Samsung says timing can vary by model, network provider and market.
OnePlus 13 Four Android version upgrades beyond the preinstalled Android 15 version, according to a reported OnePlus clarification Six-year defined security-support period Support period listed through 7 January 2031 on the UK product-security page OnePlus says actual delivery can vary by country, region and model; the OS count is reported secondary-source policy clarification rather than wording from the security table.

Samsung’s published S25 announcement is the primary source for the seven/seven promise: Samsung Global Newsroom. OnePlus lists the OnePlus 13 security period on its UK product-security page: OnePlus Product Security. The two commitments therefore differ on both dimensions: Samsung promises more major OS generations and one additional year of stated security coverage for the compared flagships.

Why the Galaxy S25 wins this comparison

It leads on major Android versions

Seven OS-upgrade generations give the Galaxy S25 a longer stated path for new Android releases than the OnePlus 13’s four upgrades beyond Android 15. That difference affects how long the phone can officially move to new platform behavior rather than remaining on an older Android base with only patches.

  • US Model - Compatible with Most GSM Carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, MetroPCS, etc. Will Also work with CDMA Carriers Such as Verizon, Straight Talk.

It also leads on security duration

The S25’s seven-year security commitment exceeds the OnePlus 13’s six-year period. OnePlus’ UK declaration provides a concrete endpoint—7 January 2031—while Samsung expresses the S25 term as seven years from global launch. Because the start points are expressed differently, compare the published dates and launch information for the exact regional model when planning a replacement.

The advantage is policy length, not a guarantee of faster delivery

A longer eligibility period does not mean Samsung updates arrive sooner in every country. Samsung says timing may vary by model, network provider and market. Carrier approval can add another step: Samsung Canada explains that carrier-locked devices may be delayed while a carrier reviews an update on its network at its One UI support page. OnePlus likewise cautions that delivery timing varies by country or region and model on its product-security page.

Model generation matters more than the logo on the back

Do not turn this comparison into “Samsung always supports phones longer.” The company’s own policies have changed by generation and differ across product tiers. Samsung’s Gulf support page says the Galaxy S24 series receives four years of OS updates and five years of security patches; that page was last updated 30 June 2026 and is specific to the Gulf-region support information: Samsung Gulf S24 support.

That S24 policy is shorter than the S25’s seven/seven commitment. If you are comparing a discounted S24 with a OnePlus 13, the answer may differ from the S25-versus-OnePlus-13 result because the remaining support time depends on each model’s launch and policy window.

Older Samsung announcements show the same evolution. In 2022, Samsung said selected devices could receive up to four generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades in its US newsroom announcement. That historical “up to four” statement should not be substituted for the S25’s later seven-generation commitment.

OnePlus also publishes model-specific security end dates rather than one blanket term for every phone. The company’s product-security table is the appropriate place to verify a different OnePlus model, and its dates should not be assumed to match the OnePlus 13.

How to read the OnePlus 13 OS-upgrade count correctly

The OnePlus 13 launched with Android 15. A report from Droid Life describes a OnePlus clarification that counts four Android version upgrades after that out-of-box version. In practical terms, the installed Android 15 build is the starting state; the promised upgrades are the next four Android versions.

This is a different counting convention from a promise stated as “seven generations” without listing a starting build. When comparing phones, write down:

  • The Android version installed at launch.
  • Whether the manufacturer counts that launch version as one generation.
  • The number of later Android-version upgrades.
  • Whether the figure comes from an official policy table or a reported clarification.

The official OnePlus product-security page directly establishes the six-year security period. The four-upgrade OS figure should therefore be presented as reported policy clarification, not as language copied from that security table.

What “seven years” does—and does not—promise

It does not guarantee a patch on a particular day

Samsung’s seven-year term defines how long the S25 is covered by the published policy. Samsung separately warns that rollout timing varies by model, carrier and market. A phone purchased unlocked in one country may see an update before a carrier-locked variant elsewhere.

It does not make every regional variant identical

Regional firmware, network certification and carrier testing can affect both timing and availability. OnePlus includes country, region and model in its own timing caveat. Confirm the exact model number and sales region before relying on a date shown for another market.

It does not mean every feature reaches every device

An Android or interface upgrade can be available while an individual feature is restricted by hardware, regulatory requirements, language or market. The support promise concerns software-version eligibility, not identical feature behavior on every S25 or OnePlus 13 variant.

A practical method for comparing any two Android phones

  1. Identify the exact generation and tier. Record the complete model name, storage or regional variant when relevant, and launch market. “Samsung flagship” or “OnePlus phone” is too broad for a support decision.
  2. Find the manufacturer’s policy page. Look for a product-security table, support declaration or launch announcement. Prefer a page that names the model rather than a general marketing statement.
  3. Separate OS upgrades from security updates. Put each number in its own column. Do not combine “seven years” with “seven generations” as though they describe the same thing.
  4. Record the starting point. Note whether the clock begins at global launch, regional launch or another date. A purchase made years later does not reset the manufacturer’s clock.
  5. Check the launch Android version. Determine whether the promised OS count includes the preinstalled release. This is essential for interpreting the OnePlus 13’s four-upgrade figure.
  6. Read delivery caveats. Check references to carrier approval, country, region, model and update frequency. Treat an end date as a coverage boundary, not a delivery schedule.
  7. Calculate remaining support at your planned purchase date. If a phone launched earlier, subtract the elapsed policy period. Compare the remaining years, not only the original headline promise.
  8. Save the source and date. Policies can be revised, and support pages can change. Keep the manufacturer URL and the date you checked it with your purchase records.

Which phone should you choose?

Choose the Galaxy S25 if maximum policy longevity is your priority

  • You want the longest published OS-upgrade commitment among these two models.
  • You expect to keep the phone for many years and want the longer stated security window.
  • You prefer a policy expressed directly by Samsung as seven OS generations and seven years of security updates from global launch.
  • You are willing to account for possible carrier or regional rollout delays rather than treating the headline term as a delivery guarantee.

Choose the OnePlus 13 if its other priorities outweigh the shorter support term

  • You are comfortable with four reported Android upgrades beyond its Android 15 launch build.
  • A six-year security period ending 7 January 2031 meets your planned ownership horizon.
  • You have verified that the UK product-security date and model-specific terms apply to the region and variant you intend to buy.
  • You value the OnePlus 13 for reasons unrelated to support length and accept that its major-version window is shorter than the S25’s.

Be cautious with discounted older models

A lower purchase price can be offset by fewer years remaining. For example, Samsung’s Gulf-region S24 support information lists four OS-update years and five security-patch years, not the S25’s seven/seven policy. Compare the remaining coverage of the discounted phone with the remaining coverage of the newer model before treating the discount as a bargain.

How long-term support affects ownership

App and service compatibility

New Android releases can provide the platform versions that developers target for current applications. Security support also helps a phone remain acceptable for services that require recent patch levels. The policy numbers do not guarantee that every third-party app will support a device for the entire period, but a longer official window gives you more time before the operating system itself becomes the limiting factor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security-sensitive use

If the phone handles financial accounts, workplace credentials or two-factor authentication, the security-update period deserves at least as much weight as the OS-upgrade count. A device can still function after major upgrades end, but an expired security window increases the need to evaluate replacement timing and risk.

Resale and hand-me-down value

Buyers of used phones often ask how much official support remains. A clearly documented end date, such as the OnePlus 13’s 7 January 2031 security endpoint, is easier to communicate than an estimate based on age alone. For the Galaxy S25, calculate from its global-launch support start and document the specific regional model.

Repairs and physical longevity

Software support cannot repair a worn battery, damaged display or failing charging port. If you plan to keep either phone through most of its policy period, budget for normal hardware maintenance and protect the device from damage. Accessories may preserve usability, but they do not extend the manufacturer’s software-support clock.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing brands instead of models: support varies between generations, tiers and regions.
  • Counting the launch build twice: establish whether the out-of-box Android version is included in the manufacturer’s wording.
  • Confusing security years with OS generations: they measure different kinds of support.
  • Assuming the purchase date starts the clock: Samsung’s S25 term starts at global launch, while OnePlus publishes a fixed security endpoint for the OnePlus 13.
  • Reading an end date as a guaranteed patch schedule: rollout timing can vary by carrier, market, region and model.
  • Generalizing a regional support page: Samsung’s S24 figure comes from Gulf-region support information and should be labeled that way.
  • Treating secondary reporting as an official table: identify the OnePlus 13 OS count as a reported clarification and use OnePlus’ own page for the security period.
  • Assuming every promised feature is universal: hardware and regional differences can affect feature availability even when the OS upgrade arrives.

Bottom line for this specific comparison

For the Samsung Galaxy S25 series versus the OnePlus 13, Samsung offers the longer published software-support commitment: seven Android OS-upgrade generations and seven years of security updates from global launch. The OnePlus 13 provides a six-year security period through 7 January 2031 and, according to reported OnePlus clarification, four Android upgrades beyond its Android 15 launch version.
