If OneDrive says your storage is full, first check the Microsoft storage page to confirm whether your cloud quota is over its limit. If it is, remove unneeded cloud content and empty the OneDrive Recycle Bin online. If the quota has room, do not delete files blindly: check whether the error is about your computer’s disk, a particular file, or the sync client.
First, identify what is full
Check your account’s usage on OneDrive on the web and read the message next to the OneDrive status icon on your computer. The two common problems need different fixes:
- OneDrive or Microsoft storage is full: the cloud account has run out of quota. Microsoft says that over quota, you cannot upload, edit, or sync new files; existing files remain available but are read-only.
- Your computer’s disk is full: the device does not have enough local space to download or process files. Free space on the computer or reduce what OneDrive downloads to it.
For a personal Microsoft account, the cloud-storage meter can include OneDrive files and photos, items in the OneDrive Recycle Bin, and Outlook.com attachments and inline images. Outlook.com email storage has its own limit, so check which meter is over its cap. Microsoft’s storage FAQ also says over-quota status can affect Outlook.com mail and Teams messages with attachments. Microsoft’s support page for UK users says an account that remains over quota for three months becomes frozen and that after six months Microsoft might delete the OneDrive and its files. Treat those periods as the policy stated on that page, not a guaranteed timeline for every account or region; check the notice for your account. Free OneDrive cloud storage safely
Review what is using the quota
Open the storage view and look for large files and folders, such as archives, ZIP files, videos, screenshots, or camera-roll content you no longer need. Confirm that anything important is backed up before deleting it. If you need to keep a file locally, move it outside the OneDrive folder or to separate storage before removing the cloud copy; deleting a synced file from OneDrive can remove it from the cloud and synced devices.

Empty the online OneDrive Recycle Bin
After deleting files, open the Recycle Bin on OneDrive’s website and permanently delete the items you are sure you do not need. Emptying the Windows Recycle Bin or Mac Trash only affects local files; it does not empty OneDrive’s online Recycle Bin. Emptying the online bin can make deleted files unrecoverable. Microsoft says the available-storage figure can take up to 24 hours to reflect cleanup, so recheck the storage page after allowing time for it to update.

Check the account type and quota
Microsoft’s support FAQ lists 5 GB of free Microsoft cloud storage for a free account and 1 TB included with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family. These are the amounts shown on the reviewed Microsoft pages, which do not state publication years; check the current account page for present plan eligibility, availability, and quota. Microsoft identifies an eligible storage extension or purchase as an option if cleanup is not enough.

Work or school accounts are managed by the organization, and there is no universal tenant quota in the support guidance. On OneDrive on the web, open Storage used to review large files and empty the online Recycle Bin. If you still need more space, contact your IT administrator; organization policies determine whether the quota can be raised. See Microsoft’s work or school storage guidance.
Fix a full computer disk without confusing it with cloud storage
If the error says the computer’s disk is full but the OneDrive cloud quota has room, free local capacity. Microsoft recommends Disk Cleanup or Storage Sense on Windows and Optimize Storage on Mac. Check which OneDrive folders are selected to sync as well.

After OneDrive has finished syncing, use Clear space on files you want to keep in OneDrive but do not need stored in full on the device. Files On-Demand and selective folder sync reduce local disk use; they do not remove files from the cloud or reduce the cloud quota. Emptying the computer’s Recycle Bin or Trash may free device space, but it is separate from emptying OneDrive’s online Recycle Bin. Follow Microsoft’s steps for OneDrive disk-full errors.
If uploads fail while cloud storage is available
Having some free quota does not guarantee that every file can upload. Check the file’s size against the remaining account space, then check restrictions and the file’s location.

- File size: Microsoft says the OneDrive app supports uploads up to 250 GB per file. That is an app-specific maximum, not a promise that a file will upload when the account lacks enough remaining quota or other restrictions apply.
- Path length: Microsoft says the complete path must contain fewer than 442 characters. Shorten deeply nested folder names or move the file closer to the OneDrive root if its path is too long.
- File name or type: Check Microsoft’s current list of restricted names, characters, and file types in its OneDrive and SharePoint restrictions.
- File in use or access denied: Close the file in any other application, save changes, and check that OneDrive has permission to read and write it. For business sync, Microsoft notes an open file cannot sync until it is saved and closed; permission problems require correcting access. See Microsoft’s work or school sync troubleshooting.
For a folder or large transfer, use the OneDrive app when appropriate, while keeping the account’s remaining quota and the path and file restrictions in mind. Microsoft’s upload guidance is available at fix problems uploading files to OneDrive.
If OneDrive sync is still stuck
Check the OneDrive icon for its exact status or error, then use the matching Windows or macOS troubleshooting steps in Microsoft’s OneDrive sync troubleshooting guide. A large workload may take time to process after you add many files, add a very large file, sign in, or update the computer. A slow internet connection can also delay large uploads. Microsoft warns that sync may be slow with more than 300,000 files; shortcut folders and synced SharePoint libraries can contribute to the workload.
Before resetting or reinstalling OneDrive, verify that you are signed into the intended account, that cloud storage is available, that the network is working, and that no file-level restriction, permission issue, or open-file conflict is blocking progress. These checks help distinguish a stalled client from a file the service cannot sync.
