Turn on File name extensions in File Explorer before opening downloaded documents. The setting reveals the complete filename, so a file presented as invoice.pdf can be exposed as invoice.pdf.exe when its real final extension is an executable.
In Windows, the final suffix determines how the system identifies and launches a file. Seeing that suffix is a quick safety check, but it does not prove a PDF is trustworthy by itself. Confirm the source, scan suspicious files, and use a viewer with protections enabled.
How to show the full file extension in Windows
File Explorer can hide familiar extensions by default. Enable the built-in setting before inspecting a download:

- Open File Explorer.
- Select View.
- Open Show and select File name extensions. On releases that use the older ribbon wording, the same checkbox appears under View in the Show/hide group.
- Return to the downloaded file and read the entire name, including the characters after the final period.
Microsoft’s documented instruction is: “In File Explorer under View, in the Show/hide group, select the File name extensions check box.” The feature is included with Windows and does not require a separate purchase or utility.

Why invoice.pdf.exe is not a PDF
A filename can contain several periods. Windows uses the last extension as the decisive one for file type. In invoice.pdf.exe, .pdf is only part of the name; .exe is the final extension and identifies an executable program. If you expected an invoice document, do not double-click it.

What to do when the final extension is suspicious
- Do not open the file. Avoid double-clicking, pressing Enter, or allowing a browser prompt to run it.
- Scan the individual file. Right-click it in File Explorer and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender. Microsoft documents this context-menu action for checking a selected file.
- Check the delivery route. If the message, download page, sender address, or business context is unexpected, contact the supposed sender through a separate, known channel instead of replying to the original message.
- Remove or quarantine it according to policy. On a managed work computer, follow your organization’s reporting process rather than bypassing security controls.
A clean scan is useful evidence, not a guarantee that an unexpected file is legitimate. The filename, source, and purpose should all make sense before you proceed.

If the file really ends in .pdf
A genuine final .pdf extension only tells you what Windows identifies as the file type. It does not establish that the document came from a trusted source or that its contents are harmless. Keep your PDF viewer maintained and leave its defensive mode enabled.

In Acrobat, Adobe says that Protected Mode is enabled by default to help secure the system. Protected View or Protected Mode can limit document actions and system interaction, adding a second layer when a PDF is untrusted. Do not disable those protections merely because a document displays an urgent warning or asks for an unusual action.

Common mistakes that make the check fail
- Reading only the first extension: In a name with multiple periods, inspect the suffix after the final period.
- Trusting the PDF icon: Icons and displayed names are not a substitute for the full extension.
- Assuming “.pdf” means safe: Verify the source and scan the file before opening it.
- Opening first and scanning later: Scan an unexpected download while it is still unopened.
- Disabling viewer protections: Keep Protected View or Protected Mode active unless an administrator has a documented reason to change it.
A quick pre-open checklist
- File Explorer shows File name extensions.
- The expected document ends with
.pdf, not an executable or script suffix. - The sender and download context are familiar and independently verified.
- Microsoft Defender has scanned a suspicious or unexpected file.
- The PDF viewer is maintained and its protected mode is enabled.
