Use one VPS per WordPress site when isolation, independent releases, security boundaries, or recovery objectives matter more than infrastructure cost. Put several separate WordPress installations on one VPS when the sites have similar stacks and traffic, are operated by the same team, and can tolerate a shared failure domain. Use WordPress Multisite only when the sites are intentionally governed as one network.
There is no authoritative “sites per VPS” number. Capacity depends on PHP workers, database load, traffic patterns, background jobs, storage, and how much headroom you reserve for spikes and maintenance.

The three ways to host multiple WordPress sites
WordPress supports three broad arrangements. Understanding what is shared—and what is not—is more important than counting domains.
One VPS for each site
Each site receives its own virtual server, operating-system users, web stack, database server or database instance, deployment process, monitoring and backups. A kernel, host machine or provider outage can still affect several VPSs, but a failed WordPress update, runaway query or compromised plugin is normally confined to one site.

Several independent installations on one VPS
You run separate WordPress directories, virtual hosts, databases and database credentials on one server. WordPress documents this as multiple instances, either sharing a database or using separate databases. Its installation guidance describes the separate-database model as the stronger containment option; give every site its own database user rather than sharing an administrator credential. The sites share the VPS’s CPU, memory, disk I/O, network capacity and operating-system failure domain, but each can have its own plugins, themes, PHP settings (within the versions installed on the server), release schedule and restore point.

A Multisite network is a collection of sites that share one WordPress installation’s core files, as WordPress explains in its Create a Network documentation. Network administrators control network-enabled plugins and themes. Individual sites retain separate content tables and media directories, but the code and much of the administration are deliberately centralized.
Multisite is an organizational choice, not merely a cheaper hosting layout. It works for a school, publication group, franchise or internal department where common governance and coordinated updates are requirements. It is a poor fit for unrelated clients, sites that need incompatible plugins or PHP versions, or owners who must deploy and administer independently. WordPress’s network preparation guidance lists additional requirements and cautions that a network may not suit sites whose interconnection, shared data or shared-user needs do not match the network model.

The table describes trade-offs, not guaranteed performance. No source establishes a universal monthly price, minimum VPS size, traffic break-even point or maximum number of sites.

Choose one VPS per site when isolation is the requirement
Unrelated owners or client contracts
Separate VPSs make ownership boundaries clear. A client can receive its own credentials, maintenance window, logs and restore process without exposing neighboring sites. This is especially important when contracts specify different uptime, data-retention or incident-response obligations.

A checkout outage, resource spike or emergency plugin rollback should not take unrelated revenue sites offline. A dedicated VPS reduces the number of components that can create collateral damage, although it does not replace application-level redundancy or provider diversity.
Incompatible software stacks
Choose separate servers when one site requires a different PHP major version, database extension, web-server module, system package or deployment tool. You avoid forcing every site to wait for compatibility testing before upgrading a shared runtime.
Different release and recovery objectives
If one team deploys daily while another freezes changes during a campaign, separate environments prevent shared maintenance from becoming a scheduling negotiation. Independent snapshots also let you restore one site to a known point without overwriting another site’s files or database.
The cost is operational: more operating systems, firewalls, patch cycles, monitoring targets and backup jobs. Standardize images and automation so the isolation benefit does not become unmanaged sprawl.

Choose separate installations on one VPS for efficient shared operations
When consolidation is sensible
Consolidation fits a portfolio of low- to moderate-traffic sites with similar PHP, database and web-server requirements, one operations team and compatible maintenance windows. You can use the server’s spare capacity across sites instead of buying a fixed allocation for each domain.
Build real boundaries, not just separate folders
Create a distinct Unix user and document root for every site. Use a separate database and database user for each installation, with the minimum privileges required. Do not reuse WordPress salts, deployment keys, administrator accounts or writable directories across sites. Configure virtual hosts, TLS certificates, logs and scheduled tasks per domain so an incident can be attributed and contained.
WordPress’s hardening guidance recommends separate databases and users when hosting multiple blogs on one server. Treat that as a baseline, not an optional refinement.
Control noisy neighbors
Set PHP-FPM worker limits, request timeouts, upload limits and queue or cron policies per site. Monitor memory pressure, CPU saturation, disk latency, database connections, slow queries and queue length. A single site running imports, image processing or an uncached query can otherwise consume the shared pool.
Know when to split the server
Move a site to its own VPS when contention is recurring rather than occasional, when its patch schedule conflicts with others, when a security incident requires a separate trust boundary, or when its recovery objective is materially stricter. Splitting after measurement is safer than guessing from page-view counts alone.

Choose Multisite only for intentional network governance
What the network shares
Core files are shared. Network administrators can install and manage plugins and themes for all sites, and a network-level update can change every site at once. Each site has its own content tables and media directory, but the shared codebase means a vulnerable or incompatible network component has a broad blast radius.
Good Multisite examples
- A university with departmental sites under one central web team.
- A publisher operating many sections with the same theme and editorial workflow.
- A franchise or branch network that intentionally standardizes plugins, branding and user administration.
Reasons to avoid it
- Sites belong to unrelated customers who require independent administrators.
- One site needs a plugin, theme or PHP version that the others cannot support.
- Teams require separate release approvals, emergency rollback plans or legal data boundaries.
- You expect to sell or transfer sites individually and want a simple extraction path.
Before enabling Multisite, verify DNS and wildcard-subdomain or subdirectory choices, URL structure, network administrator responsibilities, plugin compatibility and backup tooling. The official preparation page describes these prerequisites; a standard single-site backup procedure is not automatically a complete network recovery plan.
How to estimate how many sites a VPS can handle
Do not start with a provider’s claimed site count. Start with measurements from your sites or a representative staging load.
- Inventory each site. Record peak requests, logged-in traffic, page-cache hit rate, PHP execution time, database size, scheduled jobs, media growth and third-party API calls.
- Measure the bottleneck. Observe CPU saturation, available memory, swap activity, PHP-FPM queue depth, database connections, slow-query logs, disk latency and network throughput during normal peaks and maintenance tasks.
- Reserve headroom. Leave capacity for traffic bursts, search indexing, backups, updates and a temporary spike from one site. A server that is “full” during an ordinary hour is already undersized.
- Load-test representative work. Test anonymous cache misses, logged-in requests, publishing, image generation, imports and cron jobs separately. A page-view average hides the expensive operations that often cause outages.
- Set a split trigger. Define a measurable rule—such as sustained memory pressure, queue growth or a recovery-time objective that the shared server cannot meet—then migrate the affected site before failure.
Because workloads differ, there is no defensible universal answer such as “ten sites per 2 GB VPS.” Capacity is an engineering result from workload measurements and the specific software stack.
Implementation checklist for several independent sites on one VPS
- Provision and patch the host. Apply operating-system updates, restrict SSH, configure a firewall, enable time synchronization and create a documented rollback path.
- Separate identities. Create one Unix account, document root, deployment key and log path per site. Disable unnecessary write access and keep configuration files outside publicly served directories.
- Create databases correctly. Use a separate database and least-privilege database user for every WordPress installation. Store credentials in each site’s protected configuration, never in a shared script.
- Configure web and PHP layers. Give each virtual host its own TLS certificate, PHP-FPM pool, limits and error log. Confirm that the selected PHP version and extensions support every site’s plugins before deployment.
- Deploy and verify. Install WordPress separately, set unique salts, disable file editing in production, apply updates in a staging copy and verify permalinks, cron, uploads and email delivery.
- Back up per site. Capture database, uploads, themes, plugins and configuration on a schedule that matches the site’s recovery-point objective. Keep copies off the VPS and test restoring a single site to an isolated location.
- Monitor both layers. Alert on host saturation and site-specific failures such as HTTP errors, expired certificates, failed cron runs, database growth and unusual authentication activity.
Backup, recovery and failure planning
A shared VPS is one failure domain for its operating system, storage, web server and database service. Maintain tested, off-server backups even if the provider offers snapshots. A snapshot is useful for rapid infrastructure recovery, but it may capture several sites together and can preserve corruption or a compromised state.

For independent installations, document a per-site restore: provision a clean target, install the matching PHP and database versions, restore files and database, update DNS or the load balancer, rotate credentials and test the site. For Multisite, include network configuration, shared plugins and themes, site tables, media directories and super-admin access in the runbook. WordPress recommends regularly timed snapshots of files and databases as part of hardening practice.
A practical migration path as the portfolio grows
- Begin with separate installations on one VPS when the sites are small, compatible and operated together.
- Automate provisioning, patch reporting, backups and monitoring before adding more sites.
- Track resource and incident data by site, not only at the host level.
- Move the busiest, most sensitive or least compatible site to its own VPS first.
- Reassess whether remaining sites still share enough operational assumptions to justify consolidation.
A move from separate installs to individual VPSs is usually straightforward because each site already has its own database and files. A move out of Multisite requires planning for table prefixes, uploads, network-only plugins, user accounts, domain mapping and any code that assumes network context; test the extraction on a copy before changing production DNS.

What “simple” means in practice
Amazon Web Services describes “a single server installation for low traffic websites” as the simplest option in its Best Practices for WordPress on AWS. Simplicity here means fewer infrastructure components, not immunity from outages. More advanced architectures add availability and scalability incrementally; they also add cost and operational complexity.
For most small portfolios, the durable default is several separate WordPress installations on one well-monitored VPS, each with its own database, user, credentials and tested backup. Promote a site to its own VPS when isolation or independent scaling is worth the extra administration. Select Multisite only when shared governance is a feature you actively want, not as a shortcut for unrelated sites.
