Yes—one VPN account can usually protect several of your own devices, but the number that can connect at the same time depends on the provider and sometimes the subscription tier. Installing the VPN on multiple phones, computers, or tablets does not necessarily let them all connect concurrently.

What counts toward a VPN device limit?

Providers generally set a limit on simultaneous connections, not on how many devices you can install the app on. The exact counting rules can differ: a provider may set one account-wide cap, vary the cap by plan, or apply additional rules when several devices use the same server. Check the current policy for your subscription before depending on a particular number.

These official provider examples illustrate how policies differ; they are not a ranking of VPN quality.

Provider Published simultaneous allowance Relevant policy detail
NordVPN Up to 10 devices at once, according to its support page Its support page describes a separate same-server qualification: devices connecting to the same server need different protocols, with a maximum of five devices on one server under the listed protocol options. Router use counts as one device slot while protecting devices connected to the network. NordVPN’s device-limit details
ExpressVPN Basic: 10; Advanced: 12; Express Pro: 14, according to its support page last updated August 12, 2026 Its support page lists disconnecting a device, additional subscriptions, Windows sharing, and router setup as options when you need more coverage. Its terms of service describe a license per paid subscription, a cap that depends on service tier, and the subscriber’s responsibility to secure account information. Proton VPN 10 connections by default per user for Proton Family or Duo members and organization users, according to its support page Administrators can disable VPN connections for individual users. The cited allowance is for those account types, not a general limit for every Proton VPN subscription. Proton VPN’s connection settings

Can a family use one VPN account?

Do not assume that a multi-device allowance means you may share login details with other people. Account-sharing permissions are provider-specific, and a connection limit alone does not establish permission to share credentials. Check both the provider’s account-sharing policy and the rules for your plan. For example, ExpressVPN’s terms place responsibility for keeping account information secure on the subscriber.

What happens when you reach the connection limit?

A new device may be unable to connect until an existing VPN session is ended. The available remedy depends on the provider and subscription.

  • Disconnect a device that is no longer using the VPN, then connect the new one.
  • If offered by your provider, add another subscription or move to a tier with a higher simultaneous-connection allowance.
  • Consider a compatible VPN router if you need to cover devices beyond the app connection cap or a device cannot run the VPN app.

Can a VPN router cover more devices?

A VPN-compatible router can route traffic from devices on its network through a VPN connection. This can help with devices that lack a supported VPN app or when your household needs coverage beyond the provider’s app limit. Router compatibility and setup are not universal: verify that your exact router model supports VPN client configuration and follow the provider’s instructions for that setup. NordVPN says its router setup uses one device slot while protecting connected devices; ExpressVPN also lists router setup as an option for covering more devices than its subscription tier allows.

How to choose the right connection allowance

Count the devices you expect to use at the same time, not just the total number you own. Then check the provider’s current simultaneous-connection cap, whether it changes by plan, whether household sharing is permitted, and whether apps or router setup support your devices. Device count alone does not establish a VPN’s privacy, speed, or overall quality.
