The highest-impact Galaxy changes are in Settings → Display → Navigation bar, the Quick panel editor, Advanced features → Motions and gestures, and the Home and Lock-screen controls. Before changing anything, check Settings → About phone/tablet → Software information. One UI 7 changed panel navigation, and menu names and supported features vary by model, carrier, region and software release.
Use the checklist below to choose faster navigation, a less distracting notification flow, useful at-a-glance information and stronger security without installing anything. Add Good Lock only when Samsung’s built-in controls do not go far enough.
1. Check your One UI version first
Open Settings → About phone/tablet → Software information and note the One UI version before following a path. One UI 7 debuted with the Galaxy S25 family and is rolling out to additional Galaxy phones and tablets, but the date and exact feature set depend on the device and carrier. Samsung also changes screens between models and software releases, so a setting described here may be absent, renamed or located in a different section on your Galaxy.

Take a screenshot of important settings before experimenting, especially if you are changing navigation or a panel layout you may need to restore.

2. Choose buttons or gestures for the way you hold your phone
Go to Settings → Display → Navigation bar. Samsung offers Buttons and Swipe gestures, with additional controls that can include button order, gesture sensitivity and keyboard-hiding behavior.
Buttons: maximum discoverability
On-screen Back, Home and Recents buttons remain visible and are easy to explain to another person. They are also useful if you frequently use a case, have limited reach or switch between phones. In the same menu, choose the button order that matches your muscle memory. Buttons consume a small strip of display space, but they make the available actions obvious.
Swipe gestures: more content and faster reach
Swipe gestures remove the navigation buttons. On One UI 6.1 and later, swipe inward from either side for Back, swipe up from the bottom for Home, and swipe up from the bottom and hold for Recents. Gestures usually feel faster once learned and free the lower edge of the screen, but they are less discoverable and can conflict with an app’s edge-swipe controls.
Adjust Gesture sensitivity if Back is triggered accidentally or fails when you use a thick case. Samsung documents gesture hints on some releases; however, hints are unavailable on One UI 6.1 and later. If your version shows a keyboard-hiding control, enable or disable it according to whether you want the navigation area to disappear while typing.

3. Rebuild the Quick panel around real habits
Quick settings should contain the controls you actually use, not every switch Samsung exposes. On One UI 7, swipe down from the top-right for Quick settings. Tap the panel’s pencil Edit control to reorder, add or hide buttons. Open Panel settings for layout choices offered by your release.

Restore a combined panel when separate swipes slow you down
If you prefer the older arrangement, look for Notification and quick settings view → Together. This option is shown only on releases and models that support it. When enabled, a single pull-down presents notifications and controls together; the trade-off is that a crowded panel can require more scrolling.
Build a useful first page
- Place your most frequent switches in the first visible group: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, flashlight, sound, rotation and hotspot are common examples.
- Move rarely used controls to later pages or hide them so a quick swipe does not become a search task.
- Test the panel from the lock screen and inside a full-screen app. If an edge or corner swipe is unreliable, adjust your grip or keep the control on the first page.
The right choice balances speed with discoverability: a compact panel is quicker for an experienced owner, while a fuller panel is easier to scan when you cannot remember a control’s location.

4. Turn on motions that remove repeated taps
Open Settings → Advanced features → Motions and gestures. Enable only behaviors that match your routine; every automatic action is another possible trigger to understand.
Screen and wake controls
- Double tap to turn on/off screen: wake or lock the display with two taps instead of reaching for the side key.
- Lift to wake: wakes the phone when you pick it up, useful when the device is on a desk or in a pocket.
- Keep screen on while viewing: uses the front camera to prevent the display timing out while you are looking at it; it can affect battery use and may not suit every environment.
Alerts, capture and notification access
- Alert when phone picked up: can tell you that an unread alert arrived when you lift the device.
- Mute with gestures: silence calls and alarms with a gesture rather than a button press.
- Palm swipe to capture: takes a screenshot by swiping the edge of your hand across the display.
Some supported models let you use the fingerprint sensor to open or close the notification panel. Samsung lists exclusions, including phones with under-display fingerprint sensors and several recent Fold and Flip devices. If the switch is missing, your hardware or software is not eligible; it is not a configuration error.
5. Make the Home screen a useful dashboard
Long-press an empty area of the Home screen to open wallpaper, widgets, layout and related customization controls. Keep the first page focused on actions and information you need without opening an app.

Widgets and page layout
Add widgets such as Calendar or Messages for glanceable information, then resize them so they do not crowd touch targets. Use additional pages for less frequent categories instead of filling the first page with every app. Review the grid and app-screen options available on your model before moving icons; changing the grid can shift the entire layout.
App icon badges
Choose whether badges appear and whether they use numbers or dots. Number badges communicate an unread count but can create pressure to clear every alert; dots are quieter. Set the policy globally, then disable badges for apps whose alerts do not require action.
Edge panels
Edge panels can provide app shortcuts, contacts or tools from a swipe at the side of the display. Keep only panels you can identify quickly. If a panel opens accidentally, move its handle or reduce the number of enabled panels rather than disabling the feature blindly.
Samsung states that One UI Home cannot be removed from a Galaxy phone or tablet. You can change its layout and appearance, but it remains the system Home app.
6. Tune the Lock screen and Always On Display
Long-press the Lock screen to edit it, or use the Lock-screen and Always On Display settings available on your release. One UI 6 adds Lock-screen and Always On Display widgets including Weather, Samsung Health, Battery, Reminder, Calendar and Clock. Select only information that is safe and useful to see before unlocking.

Reposition the clock and choose glanceable information
One UI 6 allows clock repositioning. Put the clock where your wallpaper does not obscure it and where your hand does not cover it when you pick up the phone. A Battery or Calendar widget can eliminate repeated unlocks, while sensitive reminders may be better left off the Lock screen.
Balance information with privacy
Widgets and notification previews can expose appointments, message subjects or health information to anyone who can see the display. If the phone is used in a shared workplace or household, show minimal details and require unlocking for the full notification.
7. Sort notifications by how you read them
One UI 6 lets you sort notifications by Time instead of Priority, keeping the newest alert at the top. This is useful when chronological order matters more than Samsung’s grouping. In the notification settings, enable only app alerts that lead to an action.
- Keep calls, direct messages, calendar changes and security alerts enabled.
- Turn off marketing, routine status and duplicate alerts at the app level.
- Choose a consistent badge policy so the Home screen reflects real work rather than every background event.
- After changing the sort order, use the phone for a day and remove any category you still ignore.
One UI 6 also supports full-color app icons in notifications. They can make scanning faster, but a colorful stream is visually louder; use the setting that helps you recognize the source without increasing distraction.
8. Add Good Lock only when built-in settings stop short
Good Lock is Samsung’s Galaxy customization platform for deeper controls. It is optional: start with the system settings above, then check the current Good Lock catalog on the target device. Samsung’s April 11, 2025 overview notes that module names, availability and behavior can vary by region and One UI release, so do not assume a tutorial for another Galaxy will match yours.

Sound Assistant for per-app audio
Samsung documents Sound Assistant features that can set volume independently for each app, make the volume buttons control media volume and prevent media volume from dropping during navigation. These controls are useful when turn-by-turn directions should not overpower music or when one app is consistently quieter than another. Test each app after enabling a rule; per-app levels can make a device appear silent if you forget that a single app has been lowered.
Gesture and S Pen customization
Good Lock gesture controls can adjust the touch-recognition range and vibration intensity, exclude selected apps and configure S Pen behavior. Excluding a drawing or game app can prevent an intentional gesture from being interpreted as navigation. As with every module, verify that the control exists on your model before planning around it.
When not to use a module
- Skip a module if its behavior duplicates a built-in switch you already understand.
- After a One UI update, recheck modules that affect navigation, touch input or audio; an update can change labels or supported functions.
- If another person uses the phone, document unusual per-app rules so troubleshooting does not begin with a factory reset.
9. Review Auto Blocker while you are customizing
Customization is also a good time to check security. One UI 6 documents Auto Blocker, which can prevent unknown app installations, check for malware and block malicious USB commands. Find it in the security and privacy area of Settings on supported releases, read the available controls and leave protections enabled unless you have a specific, trusted reason to change them.
Auto Blocker does not replace careful app permissions or safe charging habits, but it establishes a useful baseline while you are changing other system behavior. If a legitimate sideload or USB workflow stops working, identify the exact blocked action and change the narrowest control necessary rather than disabling every protection.
10. A practical order for changing your Galaxy
- Record the version: check Software information and note the model and carrier.
- Set navigation: choose Buttons or Swipe gestures, then adjust sensitivity and test Back, Home and Recents.
- Edit the Quick panel: put frequent controls first; choose Together if your release offers the combined view.
- Enable selected motions: start with double-tap screen control and Lift to wake, then add capture or mute gestures only if you will remember them.
- Clean the Home and Lock screens: add one or two useful widgets, choose badge style and remove visual noise.
- Sort and prune notifications: use Time sorting when newest-first scanning suits you and disable irrelevant app categories.
- Check Auto Blocker: keep unknown-install and malicious-USB protections on where supported.
- Evaluate Good Lock last: install only modules that solve a concrete problem, and recheck regional and version support.
This sequence gives you a stable baseline before optional modules introduce additional behavior. If a control is missing at any step, treat the device’s current Settings screen as authoritative: Samsung varies menus and support by provider, software version and phone model.
