The “one repo, one package” approach gives each package its own Git repository and has consumers install published, versioned releases rather than depend on local paths. Its proponents argue that this makes an agent’s work easier to bound and gives each package a distinct unit for review, release, and rollback. Those are the design’s intended benefits, not outcomes established by comparative testing.

What “one repo, one package” means

In the approach described by crimson206 in a DEV Community article, each package lives in a separate Git repository. Other packages consume it through a published version instead of a local filesystem reference such as file:../. The author’s concise rule is: “One repo = one package.”

The boundary is meant to answer a practical question: what structure makes an agent’s work easy to scope, easy to check, and easy to undo? The article’s rationale is that an agent working in one package has a more clearly bounded workspace, while Git, CI, permissions, and releases already operate at repository boundaries. These are arguments for the design; they do not show that a monorepo cannot provide comparable controls.

How separate repositories are meant to help agent-assisted work

A package repository can serve as the working area for a change focused on that package. Separate repositories also let work proceed in different packages without sharing one working tree. When a package version causes trouble, the intended recovery path is to move consumers back to a previously published version.

That separation creates a useful unit of coordination, but it is not an automatic safety guarantee. A repository boundary does not by itself prevent unwanted edits, make a release safe, or make rollback effortless. The approach depends on teams maintaining package boundaries and managing versions carefully; the article does not provide an independent performance study showing improved agent accuracy, productivity, or safety.

How the authors organize and distribute many packages

Dotted names as a substitute for nested folders

Separate repositories lose the nested-folder view familiar to monorepo users. The article says the authors use dotted names to suggest hierarchy, with examples such as glpkg.cli and glpkg.adapters.npm. It describes gitdot as an organizing layer over Git hosting, not as a separate repository host.

Publishing internal building blocks

Versioned dependencies mean publishing packages, even small internal components that a team may not want in a public registry. The article describes glpkg as a tool for publishing and installing through a GitLab group package registry. Its described workflow is to commit a change, publish a new version, and install that version where needed. It also names git-nested as a command-line tool for viewing nested Git repositories together in a tree. These are the article’s descriptions of its tools, not independent product tests.

The authors say they chose GitLab because they wanted private packages, several package formats—including a generic registry—and Git hosting and CI together. GitLab’s package registry documentation says the registry is available on GitLab.com, Self-Managed, and Dedicated, and on Free, Premium, and Ultimate tiers. It supports multiple package managers and formats, including npm, NuGet, PyPI, Go, Maven, and generic packages. Visibility and anonymous-download behavior depend on package type and endpoint, so access should be checked for the particular registry and package rather than assumed.

The costs of splitting packages across repositories

  • More repository administration: many small packages mean many repositories to organize and maintain.
  • More release work: changes spanning packages require multiple releases, and consumers need to install the new versions.
  • Version coordination: keeping related versions aligned across repositories takes care.
  • Less immediate coordination: unlike a single working tree, the published-version workflow inserts a release boundary between a package change and its use elsewhere.

These costs are central to the decision: a repository boundary can clarify ownership and scope, but it adds coordination overhead when packages change together.

When a monorepo with scoped agent instructions may fit better

A monorepo can retain shared code and coordinated changes while limiting which guidance applies to an agent’s task. A 2026 Pathrule article recommends putting genuinely global rules at the root, package- or service-specific rules beside the relevant code, and inheriting shared rules from parent paths. For example, frontend styling guidance can live with the frontend package while a commit convention remains at the root. This is a vendor-authored recommendation, not independent evidence of improved performance.

The options draw boundaries differently: one uses separate repositories and published package versions; the other keeps a shared repository and scopes the agent’s context by path. The choice is better made against the team’s workflow than by assuming either layout is universally safer or faster.

Decision axis One repository per package Monorepo with path-scoped guidance
Cross-package changes Can require coordinated changes and multiple releases. Can be coordinated in one repository; the Pathrule article describes scoped guidance, not measured change outcomes.
Release and version management Packages are consumed through published versions; related versions require care. The cited Pathrule recommendation addresses instruction placement, not package release policy.
Repository administration Requires organizing and maintaining many repositories. Keeps code in a shared repository; the cited source does not quantify administrative effort.
Agent context The package repository supplies a boundary for the work area, according to the approach’s rationale. Shared rules can remain at the root while local rules live near their package, according to Pathrule’s recommendation.
Best fit depends on Whether package boundaries are stable and independent releases are practical. Whether shared code and cross-package coordination matter more than repository-level separation.

A practical decision check

  • Choose separate repositories when packages have meaningful boundaries, can be released and consumed independently, and the team accepts the extra version and repository coordination.
  • Favor a monorepo with path-scoped instructions when packages change together often or shared code and coordinated updates are important.
  • In either layout, define which instructions apply globally, how package-specific work is scoped, and how changes are reviewed and recovered.

The available sources describe a team’s chosen architecture and a monorepo instruction-scoping alternative; they do not establish a measured winner. The choice should follow the shape of the codebase and its release process.
