Sun God Nika is the true identity hidden behind the fruit publicly known as the Gum-Gum Fruit. Its canonical name is the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, a Mythical Zoan. Monkey D. Luffy is the confirmed modern user, and his Gear 5 transformation is the fruit’s awakening. Joy Boy, a figure from roughly 900 years ago, is the earliest named person officially linked to a Nika-like stretching body, although the complete extent of his abilities is unknown.
Nika’s power begins with a rubber-like body, then expands at awakening into freer body manipulation and the ability to give rubber-like properties to surroundings and other targets. That freedom is not unlimited: water and Sea-Prism Stone still weaken the user, and sustained Gear 5 use consumes considerable energy.
What Sun God Nika means in One Piece
Nika is described as a legendary Sun God and warrior associated with liberation and joy. For most of the story, the fruit’s public name concealed that identity. The World Government presented it as the Gum-Gum Fruit, while its true name is the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika.
That naming matters because Nika is not simply a costume or a nickname for one of Luffy’s techniques. It identifies the mythical power inside the fruit. The fruit is classified as a Mythical Zoan, but its awakened expression still preserves the rubber-like qualities readers associate with the Gum-Gum Fruit.

Nika also should not be treated as a fully documented historical person whose entire biography is already known. The canon establishes a legend, a fruit, and a historical figure connected to that legend. It does not yet provide a complete account of Nika’s original life or a definitive catalogue of every power attributed to the figure.
Who has used Nika-linked power?
Joy Boy: the earliest named historical connection
The official Joy Boy description places him approximately 900 years in the past and says that he fought with a body that stretched like Elbaf’s Sun God Nika. This is strong evidence of a historical Nika-like bearer or user, but it is not a complete combat record.
Nothing in that description safely establishes a list of named attacks, a confirmed transformation, or the exact limits of Joy Boy’s abilities. Claims that assign every Gear 5 feat directly to Joy Boy go beyond what the official entry confirms.

Luffy is the present-era user of the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. Before awakening, the fruit gave him a rubber-like body and enabled elastic attacks. After awakening, the transformation is called Gear 5 and presents the Nika power in its most expansive known form.
Gear 5 is therefore not a separate fruit or an unrelated power acquired late in the story. It is Luffy’s awakened state. His Haki, physical conditioning, creativity, and previously learned techniques remain separate parts of his overall fighting ability.

Are there other confirmed users?
No additional full users of the Nika fruit are established by the cited official material. Other characters may evoke Nika imagery or imitate aspects of Luffy’s style, but visual resemblance is not proof of fruit ownership. A character should be counted as another user only when the manga or an official source explicitly confirms it.

How Nika’s abilities work
Elasticity is the foundation
The fruit’s baseline effect is a rubber-like body. Luffy can stretch his limbs, rebound from impacts or surfaces, and turn elastic movement into attacks and mobility. This foundation exists before awakening, so not every stretching feat is evidence of Gear 5.
The rubber quality is more than a visual joke. It changes how force, distance, and momentum behave for the user. Luffy’s fighting style depends on converting that elasticity into angles and trajectories an ordinary body could not produce.
Awakening changes the boundary between body and environment
Gear 5 expands the rubber effect beyond Luffy’s normal body. The cited guide describes him applying rubber-like properties to the environment and to other targets. That lets him interact with battlefields as if they were flexible surfaces rather than fixed terrain.
This environmental interaction is the clearest practical difference between the pre-awakening fruit and Nika’s awakened power. Luffy can create rebounds, distort surfaces, and improvise attacks around the setting instead of relying only on the reach of his own limbs.

Freedom is the combat principle
Nika’s awakened style is deliberately unconstrained in appearance. Luffy can exaggerate his shape, react in cartoon-like ways, and combine movement with the surroundings. The result looks playful, but the underlying advantage is tactical freedom: he can change the expected relationship between a body, an attack, and the battlefield.

That freedom does not guarantee victory or make every action possible. The story still depicts exertion, recovery, and vulnerability. Gear 5 broadens the range of options; it does not remove the need to choose well or withstand the consequences.
Haki is a separate system
Luffy can combine Haki with his Devil Fruit techniques, but Haki does not come from Nika. Treating every powerful strike in Gear 5 as a fruit-only ability obscures the difference between the fruit’s properties and Luffy’s learned combat systems.
Gear 5 compared with Luffy’s earlier Gears
Before awakening
Luffy’s earlier combat forms operate from the ordinary fruit state: a rubber-like body, elastic attacks, and techniques developed through training and experimentation. Their defining resource is Luffy’s ability to exploit his own body’s stretch and rebound.
After awakening
Gear 5 adds a much wider field of interaction. Luffy can manipulate his body more freely and extend rubber-like behavior to environmental surfaces and other targets. The form is therefore a qualitative change, not merely a stronger version of one previous punch.

What the comparison does not prove
The existence of Gear 5 does not mean every earlier technique was secretly Nika power, nor does it prove that Joy Boy used every form Luffy developed. Luffy’s personal inventions, physical training, Haki, and the awakened fruit are overlapping elements rather than interchangeable labels.

Water still weakens the user
The official Devil Fruit explanation states that users lose strength in seawater and other water-filled places. Awakening does not cancel that foundational weakness. A Nika user who is submerged or otherwise exposed to the relevant water conditions remains vulnerable.
Sea-Prism Stone remains an effective countermeasure
Sea-Prism Stone can drain a Devil Fruit user’s strength and mobility on contact. Gear 5 does not make Luffy immune to that effect, so restraints or weapons made from the material remain meaningful threats.
Gear 5 is not infinite stamina
The form’s visual freedom can make it appear limitless, but advanced use is physically demanding. Sustaining the awakened state consumes energy, and Luffy may need recovery after pushing it too far. A spectacular transformation should therefore be read as a high-cost option, not a permanent upgrade with no downside.
The original Nika moveset is not fully known
The available official Joy Boy description confirms the stretching-body connection but does not enumerate his techniques. Likewise, a complete account of Nika’s original abilities has not been supplied. Fan explanations about an unseen “true” moveset should be labeled speculation rather than canon.

Is Joy Boy the same as Nika?
The safest answer is no confirmed identity equivalence has been established by the cited evidence. Joy Boy is a historical figure from roughly 900 years ago whose body is officially described as stretching like the Sun God Nika. Nika is the legendary figure and the identity concealed within the fruit’s true name.
That wording creates a deliberate connection without proving that Joy Boy literally was the deity Nika, that he invented the legend, or that he possessed every ability Luffy displays. The evidence supports “Joy Boy was Nika-like” more securely than any stronger claim.
Which chapter reveals that Luffy is Nika?
The canonical material identifies the reveal through Luffy’s awakening and Gear 5, but the official summaries used here do not state a chapter number. Exact chapter references can also vary between serialized, collected, and translated editions. The reliable takeaway is the event itself: the awakening reveals that the fruit publicly called the Gum-Gum Fruit is actually the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika.

- Separate the fruit from the legend. Nika is the legendary identity; the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, is the Devil Fruit power.
- Separate awakening from baseline elasticity. Stretching and rubber-like attacks predate Gear 5, while environmental rubberization belongs to the awakened expression described in the guide.
- Separate Luffy’s systems. Haki, training, physical strength, and learned techniques can be layered onto fruit abilities but are not automatically Nika powers.
- Check the evidence level for historical claims. Joy Boy’s stretching body is confirmed; his complete moveset and transformation details are not.
- Keep the weaknesses in view. Water, Sea-Prism Stone, exertion, and recovery costs remain part of the power’s rules.
