The Straw Hat Pirates have ten members on the official ONE PIECE crew roster: Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Tony Tony Chopper, Nico Robin, Franky, Brook and Jinbe. Each has a defined job aboard the ship, a personal ambition and a specialty that keeps the crew alive. Some rely on Devil Fruits, while others contribute through navigation, swordsmanship, marksmanship, cooking, engineering or fish-man martial arts.
This guide explains what each Straw Hat does, how their defining abilities work and why that specialty matters to the crew. It stays focused on stable, spoiler-light information. Official character profiles accessed on October 13, 2026, can be revised as the manga continues, so later story developments may add to these descriptions.
The Straw Hat roster at a glance
The crew’s jobs divide into practical shipboard duties, leadership, combat and specialist work. The following summary uses the official roster and character profiles rather than ranking anyone’s strength.

Monkey D. Luffy: captain
Role in the crew
Luffy is the Straw Hats’ captain and the person who gathers the crew around a shared voyage. His stated ambition is to become the Pirate King. In practice, captaincy means deciding when the crew will take a risk, choosing whom to help and committing everyone to a course when the situation is uncertain. He is not the navigator, engineer or doctor; his job is to give the crew a purpose and make the final leadership decision.
Defining abilities
The official profile identifies both the Gomu Gomu no Mi and the Hito Hito no Mi, Mythical Zoan, Model Nika. Luffy’s body has rubber-like properties that let him stretch, rebound and absorb or redirect force in ways an ordinary fighter cannot. He turns those properties into unconventional punches, kicks and movement techniques rather than relying on a conventional weapon.
The Nika designation describes the deeper form of his fruit power. At a spoiler-light level, it allows a much broader, highly flexible style of combat in which his body and surroundings can be used with cartoon-like freedom. The important point for a crew guide is that Luffy’s fruit is a tool for unpredictable offense and endurance, while his captaincy determines how the whole crew is deployed.
Roronoa Zoro: combatant and swordsman
Role in the crew
Zoro is the crew’s principal swordsman and combatant. He aims to become the world’s greatest swordsman, so his personal goal aligns with a life built around training, duels and protecting his comrades. When the crew needs a powerful close-range fighter, Zoro is usually the member assigned to meet that threat directly.
Defining abilities
Zoro’s contribution does not depend on a Devil Fruit. His strength comes from disciplined swordsmanship, physical conditioning and the ability to fight with multiple blades. His techniques demand exceptional coordination and stamina, allowing him to attack from unusual angles and continue fighting after sustaining serious punishment.
Because he is a dedicated combatant rather than a ship specialist, Zoro can remain available when Nami is navigating, Sanji is cooking or Franky is repairing the Sunny. His role is therefore both offensive and defensive: he removes major obstacles and acts as a deterrent when the crew is threatened.
Nami: navigator
Role in the crew
Nami is responsible for navigation, route planning and reading the conditions that determine whether the ship can survive a journey. Seas in the One Piece world can change rapidly, so reaching an island is not simply a matter of pointing the bow toward a destination. Nami interprets weather, currents and other environmental clues to keep the crew on a viable course.
Defining abilities
Her meteorological knowledge is applied through the Clima-Tact, a staff-like weapon that produces localized weather effects. Depending on the setup, it can create conditions such as clouds, wind and lightning. Lightning attacks give Nami a way to fight at range, but the same weather control is useful defensively: she can obscure an area, alter visibility or exploit an opponent’s position.

Nami demonstrates why a Devil Fruit is not required to be one of the crew’s most important specialists. Her navigation decisions affect every member before a battle begins, and her Clima-Tact turns technical weather knowledge into a flexible combat system.
Usopp: sniper
Role in the crew
Usopp is the Straw Hats’ sniper. His job is to influence a fight from a distance, hit targets that other members cannot reach and use specialized ammunition to solve problems without a direct confrontation. He is also an inventor, so his equipment changes as he develops new tools and ammunition.
Defining abilities
Precision marksmanship is Usopp’s core power. He can fire across long distances and select ammunition for a particular target or environment. His inventive approach means that the shot itself is only part of the tactic: the projectile may distract, restrain, ignite, obscure or otherwise change the battlefield.

These seeds grow into fast-acting plants with different practical or offensive effects, giving Usopp alternatives to ordinary projectiles. His value is not measured only by physical strength. Planning, timing and the ability to exploit an opening let him support stronger fighters while staying outside the most dangerous range.
Sanji: cook
Role in the crew
Sanji is the crew’s cook, and that responsibility is essential on a voyage where supplies, stamina and recovery determine whether anyone can continue. He plans and prepares meals, protects the food stores and makes sure the crew can function after exhausting battles or long stretches at sea. His dream is to find the All Blue, a legendary sea said to contain fish from every ocean.
Defining abilities
Sanji fights almost exclusively with his legs. Preserving his hands for cooking, he has developed powerful kicks, rapid footwork and acrobatic movement. This style lets him attack while keeping his hands free for balance or rescue work and allows him to move quickly across a ship or battlefield.
His role combines support and combat more directly than any simple job title suggests. A crew without a cook cannot maintain its strength, while Sanji’s mobility makes him an effective protector of less combat-focused teammates. The All Blue also gives his work a personal purpose: cooking is not merely a chore but part of his long-term ambition.
Tony Tony Chopper: doctor
Role in the crew
Tony Tony Chopper is the Straw Hats’ doctor. He diagnoses illness and injury, treats wounds and decides what medical care is possible with the supplies available aboard ship. His medical role becomes especially important because the crew frequently enters unfamiliar environments where ordinary treatment may not be enough.

- Set Sail with your favorite pirates - Brook, also known as "Soul King" is one of the two swordsmen of the Straw Hat Pirates and the crew musician. He ate the Yomi Yomi no Mi devil fruit which gave him the power to return to life after his death, and he now has devloped powers to control the souls of others, and himself. Brook was originally part of the Rumbar Pirates but died, and since his soul took so long to return he came back as a skeleton with his iconic afro

Defining abilities
Chopper is a reindeer who ate the Hito Hito no Mi. The fruit gives him human traits and enables transformations into forms suited to different situations. Each form changes his balance of strength, speed, size or medical usefulness, allowing him to examine a patient, carry someone, defend the crew or confront a powerful opponent.
His transformations are best understood as a toolkit rather than a single attack. Chopper can shift from caring physician to front-line defender when circumstances demand it, but the underlying reason for his versatility is still his medical duty: he needs enough physical adaptability to keep his patients and crewmates alive.
Nico Robin: archaeologist
Role in the crew
Nico Robin is the crew’s archaeologist. She studies the Poneglyphs and seeks the true history, giving the Straw Hats access to knowledge that cannot be obtained through ordinary navigation or combat. Her work involves interpreting ancient records and recognizing the significance of information that other people might overlook.

Robin ate the Hana Hana no Mi. It allows her to sprout copies of her body parts in multiple locations, including on surfaces or around an opponent. She can use those limbs to grapple, strike, restrain or manipulate objects at a distance. By combining many sprouted limbs, she can create larger constructs that extend the reach and force of her attacks.
The fruit’s utility mirrors her archaeological specialty: Robin can affect several places at once and work through details that are inaccessible to a normal person. In the crew, she supplies both irreplaceable historical expertise and precise control when a fight calls for immobilization rather than brute force.
Franky: shipwright
Role in the crew
Franky is the shipwright who built the Thousand Sunny. He maintains the vessel, repairs damage and modifies its systems so the crew can continue traveling after storms, collisions and battles. A pirate crew may win a fight and still be stranded if its ship cannot move, which makes Franky’s work a survival function as much as an engineering one.
Defining abilities
Franky’s body is a cyborg construction containing weapons and mechanical features. Those modifications give him integrated tools for combat and practical work without requiring a separate weapon kit. His engineering knowledge also lets him understand the Sunny as a complete system: hull, propulsion, defenses and special mechanisms must work together.
His greatest contribution is therefore infrastructure. Franky turns the crew’s ship into a dependable platform for exploration and battle, then keeps that platform operating when ordinary repairs would not be enough.

Brook: musician and swordsman
Role in the crew
Brook is the Straw Hats’ musician and also a swordsman. Music gives the crew morale, entertainment and a distinctive cultural identity during long voyages. His fencing skill provides a second function: he can protect the crew while moving with the speed and precision expected of a trained blade user.
Defining abilities
The Yomi Yomi no Mi brought Brook back to life. His profile also describes soul-related abilities, which support techniques that go beyond ordinary swordplay. He can use music as part of his combat approach, pairing performance and rhythm with movement or effects that unsettle an opponent.
Brook’s unusual existence affects the way he serves the crew. He can operate in situations that would be dangerous for a living human, while his musical role keeps the voyage from becoming only a sequence of battles. The combination of musician, swordsman and soul-based powers is unique within the roster.

Jinbe: helmsman
Role in the crew
Jinbe is the Straw Hats’ helmsman. He steers the ship through difficult waters, makes rapid course corrections and uses his maritime experience to help the crew handle conditions that cannot be solved by a map alone. The official roster includes him among the ten current members.
Defining abilities
Jinbe is a fish-man karate master. Fish-man Karate uses water and the practitioner’s physical power to deliver attacks, making it especially suited to a seafaring fighter. His experience in the ocean also means that he can contribute where a land-based specialist might be limited, whether the crew is maneuvering in rough water or fighting near a ship.
Jinbe’s combination of helmsmanship and maritime combat fills a practical gap. Nami determines the route and reads the weather; Jinbe handles the immediate control of the vessel when precise steering is the deciding factor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the roles fit together
The Straw Hats are effective because their specialties cover different stages of an adventure rather than duplicating one another.
- Before departure: Nami evaluates the route and weather, Franky checks the Thousand Sunny, Sanji manages food and Chopper prepares medical supplies.
- During the voyage: Nami navigates, Jinbe handles the helm and Franky keeps the ship functioning. Brook provides music while the crew travels, and Robin studies clues connected to the world’s history.
- When a threat appears: Luffy leads, Zoro handles direct sword combat, Sanji uses speed and kicks, Usopp attacks from range, Robin restrains targets, Nami manipulates weather and Chopper changes forms to meet the medical or physical problem.
- After a confrontation: Chopper treats injuries, Sanji restores the crew with food, Franky repairs the vessel and Nami plots the next safe course.
This division explains why the crew cannot be understood as ten interchangeable fighters. A navigator, doctor or shipwright may be less visible in a particular battle but can determine whether the crew reaches the next island at all.
Best Value
- Set Sail with your favorite pirates - Usopp is the third member to join the crew after he received help from Luffy, Nami, and Zoro to defend his friend Kaya from Kuro, and the Black Cat Pirates. He is the crew sniper and although he isnt as physically tough as the rest of the crew, he makes up for it in heart and dreams of becoming a brave warrior of the sea like his father

Which Straw Hats have Devil Fruits?
Several members’ signature abilities come from Devil Fruits: Luffy, Chopper, Robin and Brook are the clearest examples in the official profiles, and their powers change their bodies or the way they interact with the world. Franky’s abilities instead come from cybernetic engineering, Nami’s weather effects come from meteorological skill and the Clima-Tact, Usopp relies on marksmanship and inventions, Zoro on swordsmanship, Sanji on leg techniques and Jinbe on fish-man karate.
This distinction matters because the crew’s strength is deliberately distributed. Losing access to a fruit power would not erase the importance of navigation, medical knowledge, engineering or martial training. The Straw Hats work as a team because different kinds of expertise cover different risks.
Common points of confusion
Is Jinbe part of the official Straw Hat crew?
Yes. The official crew roster lists Jinbe alongside Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky and Brook, making ten members in total.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are the Going Merry and Thousand Sunny crew members?
No. Both ships appear in the crew record, but they are vessels rather than additional members. The Thousand Sunny is Franky’s major shipbuilding project and the crew’s principal ship in the current roster.
Does every Straw Hat have a Devil Fruit?
No. Swordsmanship, navigation, cooking, sniping, shipbuilding and fish-man karate are all non-fruit foundations of the crew’s abilities. Devil Fruits are only one part of the team’s overall skill set.
Is there an official ranking of the Straw Hats’ strength?
The role and character profiles establish jobs and defining abilities, not a single objective ranking. Comparing members by “strongest” can also ignore the fact that navigation, medicine and engineering solve problems that combat power cannot.
What to remember
The Straw Hat crew is a ten-member team organized around complementary responsibilities. Luffy supplies leadership, Zoro and Sanji provide major close-range combat, Usopp covers long range, Nami navigates and controls weather, Chopper handles medicine, Robin preserves archaeological knowledge, Franky keeps the ship working, Brook combines music with swordplay and Jinbe controls the helm while bringing fish-man karate. Their powers matter most when understood beside those jobs: each ability exists within a larger system that lets the crew travel, survive and pursue its individual dreams together.
