Short answer: If this is your first, manga-faithful watch of One Piece, skip most anime-only detours and keep the main story moving. The safest filler exception is G-8 (episodes 196–206), which is widely praised for its comedy and writing. Post-Arabasta (131–135) is also worth watching if you enjoy crew downtime, while the Boss Luffy historical-comedy specials (291–292, 303, and 406–407) are charming optional extras. Movie-tie-in arcs are needed only when you want setup or character material for the associated film.

Use episode numbers rather than deleting whole stretches automatically. Some episodes labeled “mixed” contain manga material, and a few slow-looking installments are important to the story.

The fastest reliable way to skip filler

For a first run, follow the manga story and use the table below as an episode-level filter. Skip the clearly anime-original blocks, keep the core story, and add back the exceptions that match your tastes. This approach avoids two common mistakes: watching every detour because it is labeled One Piece, or skipping a mixed canon/filler episode that contains material from Eiichiro Oda’s manga.

  • Always keep the main-story episodes. A slow canon episode is still part of the narrative and may introduce information used later.
  • Skip long anime-original arcs when momentum matters. The 326–336 block is the clearest example: it has entertaining moments but runs too long for a canon-first watch.
  • Make room for G-8. Episodes 196–206 are the most consistently recommended anime-original exception.
  • Treat movie tie-ins as optional. They add context for a film, not requirements for understanding the television storyline.

How much filler does One Piece have?

The percentage is smaller than many viewers expect for an anime that has passed 1,100 episodes. GamesRadar estimated about 95 filler episodes, or roughly 9% of the series, in its 2026 coverage. Grand Line Guide counts 94 filler episodes, dividing them into 75 standalone episodes and 19 inline episodes. Those figures differ because each guide uses its own classification rules and episode cutoff.

“Filler” is therefore not a single universal list. One guide may classify a recap, crossover, or episode with a few original scenes differently from another. The practical consequence is more important than the exact total: check the individual episode range before skipping, especially when an anime-original scene is embedded in a canon storyline.

Episode-by-episode skip and watch guide

Episodes Arc or block Recommendation Why
54–60 Warship Island Skip on a first run Early anime-original detour; the guide describes it as slower and less essential. Watch only if you want completion.
98–99, 102 Desert side episodes Skip for momentum Small filler detours inside the Alabasta story.
131–135 Post-Arabasta Worth watching if you like downtime Character-focused cooldown after Alabasta. GamesRadar specifically recommends this subset.
136–143 Goat Island and Ruluka Island material Skip for a manga-faithful pace Standalone anime-original stories that follow the stronger Post-Arabasta episodes.
196–206 G-8 Watch The safest filler recommendation: funny, clever, and broadly praised by GamesRadar and Grand Line Guide.
220–225 Ocean’s Dream Optional; skip on a speed run Short anime-original arc built around a memory-themed premise.
279–283 Straw Hat backstory and recap block Skip unless you need a refresher Primarily recap with limited additions.
291–292, 303, 406–407 Boss Luffy historical specials Optional watch Standalone alternate-era comedy. GamesRadar calls these charming extras rather than story requirements.
317–319 Post-Enies Lobby side stories Optional Character-focused material that is not needed for the plot.
326–336 Long anime-original detour Skip for momentum It has fun moments but is long enough to interrupt the main story.
426–429 Little East Blue Skip unless watching Strong World-related material Four-episode movie tie-in.
457–458 Marineford retrospective Skip on a first watch Recap and side-perspective episodes placed before the climax.
575–578 Z’s Ambition Skip unless watching Film: Z Four-episode movie setup arc.
780–782 Marine Rookie Optional short detour Anime-only infiltration story; not needed for the main plot.
895–896 Cidre Guild Skip unless watching Stampede-related extras Two-episode movie tie-in.
907 Romance Dawn anniversary special Optional bonus Alternate retelling outside the main continuity.
1029–1030 Uta’s Past Optional; watch with a Film: Red plan Two-episode tie-in exploring Uta’s backstory.

Filler arcs that are actually worth watching

G-8 (episodes 196–206)

G-8 is the default answer when a new viewer asks for one filler arc not to miss. The Straw Hats land in a heavily defended Marine base and must escape through a sustained, character-driven pursuit. GamesRadar describes the arc as funny and smart, while Grand Line Guide lists it as broadly recommended. Its appeal comes from using the crew’s established personalities and abilities rather than pausing the series for an unrelated premise.

Watch all of episodes 196–206 if you choose it; the arc works as a continuous story, and skipping individual installments removes the setup and payoff that make the exception effective.

Post-Arabasta (episodes 131–135)

These episodes are a cooldown after the intensity of Alabasta. They focus on the crew’s relationships, habits, and smaller conflicts instead of advancing the central plot. GamesRadar specifically recommends this five-episode subset. It is a good choice when you value character texture more than a strictly canon-only runtime.

Do not confuse this recommendation with the entire 131–143 stretch. Episodes 136–143, commonly grouped with Goat Island and Ruluka Island material, are easier to remove when you want to move directly to the next manga storyline.

Boss Luffy specials (291–292, 303, 406–407)

These episodes relocate the Straw Hats to an alternate historical setting for self-contained comedy. They do not advance the main continuity, but GamesRadar highlights them as charming specials. Watch them between major arcs when you want a light change of pace; skip them without concern if you are following only the manga plot.

Arcs that are safe to skip on a first watch

Warship Island and the desert side episodes

Warship Island (54–60) is an early anime-original detour. It can be enjoyable as completionist material, but the guide characterizes it as slower and less essential. Episodes 98–99 and 102 are smaller desert diversions within the Alabasta period. Removing these episodes preserves the larger arc while avoiding side stories that do not affect its resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Goat Island and Ruluka Island (136–143)

After the more worthwhile Post-Arabasta cooldown, this material returns to standalone adventures. The stories are not required for later plot comprehension, so a first-time viewer who wants momentum can skip the entire 136–143 range.

Ocean’s Dream (220–225)

Ocean’s Dream is a compact, memory-centered anime-original arc. Its premise gives the crew a different kind of problem, but it is not a prerequisite for later canon events. Keep it for a completionist or character-focused run; remove it on a speed run.

The 326–336 detour

This is the longest clearly identified anime-original interruption in the table. It has fun moments, but its length makes the pacing cost obvious. If your priority is reaching the next manga storyline, skip 326–336 as a block rather than sampling it randomly.

Recaps and side-perspective episodes

Episodes 279–283

This block revisits Straw Hat backstories and adds only small amounts of new material. Viewers who have just watched the earlier arcs usually gain little from it. Use it as a refresher after a long break, not as required first-run viewing.

These Marineford retrospective episodes provide recap and an alternate perspective before the climax. They can help if you have forgotten the players and stakes, but they are safe to skip when watching the surrounding canon episodes in order.

Do you need the movie-tie-in episodes?

No. Movie tie-ins are optional because the films and their setup arcs sit outside the requirements of the main television plot. Watch them when you intend to view the associated movie and want extra context; otherwise, continue with the core episodes.

Tie-in episodes Associated viewing plan Decision
426–429 Strong World-related material Skip unless you are preparing for the film.
575–578 Film: Z Skip unless you want its four-episode setup.
895–896 Stampede-related extras Skip during a television-only run.
907 Romance Dawn anniversary special Watch as an alternate retelling, not as continuity.
1029–1030 Film: Red and Uta’s backstory Optional; pair it with the film if that is your plan.

The tie-in label does not mean an episode is bad. It tells you what problem the episode solves: adding promotional or character context for a film rather than advancing the manga adaptation.

Choose a watch path

How to skip without losing canon information

  1. Identify the exact episode range. Use an episode guide that distinguishes standalone anime-original episodes from mixed canon/filler entries.
  2. Check the first and last episode around a block. Long arcs may begin immediately after a canon cliffhanger and resume before the next manga storyline; confirm where the canon plot continues.
  3. Do not skip by mood alone. An episode that feels slow can still contain manga material, foreshadowing, or a transition needed for the next arc.
  4. Record your stopping point. Streaming services sometimes label specials, recaps, and tie-ins inconsistently. Write down the episode number rather than relying only on a thumbnail or season name.
  5. Return to the main sequence after the detour. When you skip a block, resume at the first episode outside that range and watch for a change in opening recap or setting.

Anime or manga: the canon-first alternative

If your primary goal is the original story with no anime pacing decisions, the physical manga is the most direct route. VIZ’s catalog lists One Piece Box Set 1 covering volumes 1–23, along with later box sets covering subsequent portions of the series. Box-set availability, pricing, and regional stock change, so check the current VIZ catalog and your local retailer before buying.

The manga does not include the anime’s filler arcs, recaps, or film setup episodes. That makes it useful for readers who want a complete canon foundation and plan to return to selected anime material—especially G-8 or the character-focused Post-Arabasta episodes—afterward.

Bottom line for a first-time viewer

Follow the canon episodes, skip most anime-only detours, and add G-8 (196–206) as the one near-universal exception. Add Post-Arabasta (131–135) if you enjoy crew-centered downtime, and save the Boss Luffy specials for optional comedy. Treat every movie-tie-in block as conditional: watch it only when you are also watching the related film. That gives you the manga’s story without sacrificing the few filler stories that viewers and episode guides consistently single out as worthwhile.
